    I bought a Cosori because it was cheaper than Excalibur, rated at lower decibels, and had a hinged door. I love it and am really happy with my decision. I cut old white sheet into squares to fit trays. When finished dehydrating I wash squares in vinegar and air dry. That eliminates heated plastic mesh.

    This was a very good practical test and review. You've helped me validate what I had already decided on. I loved your approach to consumer testing. The Excalibur is my selection because I need that additional space for drying honey samples :) Non-Digital and no timer is fine with me. Size is everything, along with drying efficiency. You did a fantastic job reviewing the value of the many features. Very much appreciated!

    When I got my Nesco, 10+ years ago, I didn’t even know there were others. I got an amazing deal, 12 trays, 12 fruit trays, and 12 mesh trays for less than the 4-tray units. I’ve used it happily, until I watched your video. Now I feel like I want the latest and bestest. But then I look at my old faithful slow poke and guess I’m pretty happy. It’s worked this long. I’ll keep it.
    Thank you for a very interesting video. It was fun to learn.

    After doing a ton of research, I decided on a Cosori last year and absolutely LOVE it. There is more than adequate space between trays, is unbelievably quiet and dehydrates very well. Yes, I do wish the mesh trays extended to the sides for more coverage but that is not a show-stopper. I highly recommend the Cosori to anyone thinking of getting a dehydrator.

      Thank you. I was about to get the Excalibur but opted for the cosori. It was half the price of the Excalibur I was looking at. I think the area for dehydrating is less, but I think its a good trade off for lower price and quieter machine. I think a loud machine would drive me nuts.

      I love my Cosori. My old Excalibur completely failed at dehydrating delicate herbs and teas. Actually, the Excalibur failed at everything. It wanted to cook everything I tried to dehydrate. So I just finished another season of dehydrating mint, echinacia, chamomile, white pine needles, basil, cilantro, oregano, parsley, garlic, onion, lemongrass, celery, tomatoes, peppers, spinach, kale, mushrooms, squash, and other vegetables. I even bought a second Cosori because it saves so much money over canning.
      Now I'm going to try dehydrating stock and vegetable stock veggies, as well as fully prepared foods for backpacking trips. Like spaghetti, chili, curries, and stews. No more Mountain House!

    Years ago I bought my used Nesco at a garage sale and it looked almost new. Worked great but again limited surface area. As the years have gone on I have picked up additional trays where ever I can fund them..I think I am up to 13...which is too many to dry at once. I have hung on to them because over time the plastic does become some what brittle and that way I have spares. Last year I found an almost new set with 4 trays and bought it. Now I have 2 setups with extra trays.
    I have heard good things about Excaliber and thought I had to have one, but just had not spent the money.
    I had begun thinking maybe I didn't want to spend the exta money for it and here are my reasons I have decided to stick with what I have:
    1. I don't feel that inconvenienced about having to remove dried product and rotate the trays.
    2. My son has become a vegetarian so I don't need to make as big batches of jerky ( I used to give him between 2-4 lbs, dried, for holidays and birthdays, plus gift it to my daughters and their husband and boyfriend. Now I only need to make enough for my 2 girls and us.
    3. Yes it is noisy..and they do put out heat and moisture into the room. If any of these issues bother me, I just put it out in the attached garage.
    4. Length of time to dry- now that I am retired, I have more time to work with it and it is easier to plan dry time.
    5. I do purchase produce to dry as well as using vegetables and herbs from my small garden and so far it works fine for that.
    5. I already own the 2 Nescos and i can live with #1-4. If I were to have to replace these, I would likely go with a Cosiri due to price, size, and noise level. Also, since we don't hunt, drying massive amounts of any thing (such as game), the Excalibur seems unnecessary for me at this point in time.
    6. Space- storage of the Excalibur would be a problem as well as having a place to use it when drying. I would have to carry it up and down the stairs to store. I store the 2 Nescos with the trays in 13 gallon trash bags with the pull closure. Easy to store and keep clean, store, and carry up and down the stairs.
    Hope these reasons help you with your decision.

    I love my nesco it might take a bit more attention but I usually just run mine over night or in the garage I’ve even had on back patio doing onions. It’s light weight and gets the job done. Perfect for people without a dedicated space. I store mine on my appliance shelf in the garage

    That was a great comparison. I had considered an Excalibur or Cosori but due to expandibility and 1000 watts,and price, I chose a Nesco Gardenmaster. I am not saying it is better than any of the others. It is just a better fit for me. I now have 2 units and 24 trays.

    I got my Cosori in June 2020. Debated between the Excalibur and the Cosori. Cosori had a lot of good reviews and I liked that people commented how quiet it is. I'm still learning but don't regret my decision in the least. Like others mentioned, I purchased mesh and cut to fit the shelves. I haven't made leathers yet but that's next on the agenda.

    We bought a Cosori 18 months ago. Love it. I use parchment paper on the stainless steel trays plus just bought the silicone trays and cut to fit flexible silicone mesh mats. Being able to set the timer and temp is a real advantage. It is quiet and doesn't put out much heat. Huge pluses since it's currently set up in a one room studio while we build a house.

    I have had an old one-speed round, stacking dehydrator for years. I would get it out in the summer to attempt dehydrating my garden's overabundance. Alas, that one speed - high - did not yield a successful product most of the time unless I was willing to endlessly rearrange and rotate contents. I started researching newer dehydrators and narrowed it down to the three you just compared in your great video. I ended up choosing the Excalibur, not because I have a big budget, but because I felt its capacity would help me cope with abundant produce from the garden. Though I have used it exactly once, it beautifully dehydrated a full load of mixed brassica greens that had to be harvested during the recent Arctic cold snap. I am so pleased!

    I had a round one, can't remember the brand, and just never enough luck with it to justify the work it required. I bought the Cosori from Amazon Treasure Truck Feb, 2020 and absolutely love it. I especially love it now that I've found your site and get all kinds of great advice and information from it! It's very quiet and efficient and small enough to tuck out of the way. The stainless is super easy to keep clean but I do use silicon mats or parchment often on the trays. As a side note, first experience with dehydrating was a 18"Wx24"Tx24"D (huge) wood box with lightbulbs, a fan and screens as shelves. Homemade and worked so well!

It is really hard to go on Amazon reviews because you are never quite sure if they got a bad one or if they just don't know what they are doing when they leave a bad review. Most of the reviews were good and there were thousands of them so on a wing and a prayer I just got it the other day. It has been wiped down and a dry run. I just need to figure out the temp and timer thing. It definately runs quiet. I was doing the dry run and forgot I put it on. Several hours later I went to the kitchen and realized it was still going. I grabbed some apples and oranges and such for my first run.I hope to start it tonight if I can get off my bum.

Although I almost did not get it because it was made in China, I am new to this and the thought of the expense in buying the Excalibur to just let it sit was not sitting well with me. Aside from where manufactured, I do love the Cosori. I love to powder stuff. Amazing to see the end result from what it started. Now many are. I really perked up my ears when you said that. I'm in it for the big one, but I'm in the 'can't afford it' group, thus your recommend of the Corsi, after your no-nonsense experiment just sold me. I was looking at that along with the Nesco when I paused and went looking for reviews. Yours popped up and angel that you are it was perfect for my purposes. Times being normal I'd just stick with the one lunger, but times aren't normal. (Grrr!) The garden waits on no dehydrator.

    I own a Cosori, and thrilled with it….came with a 2 year bonus warranty, extra 6 plastic screens and trays…. I prefer the timer because it automatically turns OFF the dehydrator:)
    Love making jerky and it’s important that the dehydrator reaches a temperature of 165 degrees….I have run mine with a thermometer inside…and the Cosori reaches 165 degrees every time making jerky.

      Turning off the dehydrator doesn't mean anything is finished, though, which is a trap that a lot of beginners fall into. Never rely on that timer to tell you anything more than the machine is off.

    I have a Nesco and the bottom tray does not dry slower than the top tray. I happened to run two batches of food yesterday and today. One was mushrooms and one was jerky. I checked every couple of hours, and I never felt the need to rotate the trays. I paid 39 dollars on amazon and paid 15 dollars for a two pack of extra trays. I didn't need anything elaborate since I use it mostly for jerky from time to time. The trays have a fine mesh, so nothing drops through, and it was very easy to clean. There is no adjustment for time or temp, only an on off switch. From what I gather it dries at 160 degrees and the fan certainly doesn't lack air flow. I don't need the unit to dry faster and I am not sure it's better to dry faster. It took about 6 hours for the jerky to dry and a bit longer for the mushrooms I believe. I am happy with my purchase as it is much easier than using my convection toaster oven or my commercial electric smoker.

    I liked your view on all the dehydrators, alas for whatever reason I purchased 2 Nesco's, one with the heat element on the bottom and the other on the top. I marinated some jerky and tried them both after smoking the meat in the offset for 4 hours at 150 temp. One was placed in the home kitchen and the other in the garage, however both seemed relatively quiet. I did notice that the lower grates closer to the heat was drying quicker, but that was easily remedied by simply switching the trays and the other with the top element was also rotated. When your cooking meats for long periods of time a careful watch is required to maintain quality in any cooker, the finish in a dehydrator is even more so to bring to texture. When it requires a bit more work and attention it's something that is consistent with a good bbq. If you can get past all the parts such as trays to move and understand the process, the added work isn't all that much and even could be considered an after thought. Now knowing what you mentioned and the results of the others I'd certainly of course would like to take a peek or give one a try, but who's got all that room. From what people say about the Nesco, I may never get the chance.

    Great test! With the Nesco, it could be based on if your Nesco is older. I know because I had one that was older, and then bought a new one. That's when I realized that the old one ran cool compared to the new one. I'm finding my new Nesco and the Cosori get it done roughly in the same time, however it does help if I rotate the trays on the Nesco. I think you had the trays in the Cosori and Excalibur in the optimal position, (skipping the top and bottom), and the Nesco in the "okay" position. Switching the positions may have made the difference. But I think the biggest difference with the Nesco is an older one may be running cooler. And I know what you mean with the stainless steel trays getting hot. It's kind of surprising, but makes sense.

    • @ThePurposefulPantry
      @ThePurposefulPantry  3 роки тому +2

      This is a year old Nesco, and while they may not have been in your optimum position, it was another three and a half hours before they were done. Even if I had them a tray up, it wouldn't have made that much difference. There's always the chance this one is slower in general, but it's not about the age.

      @StockingMyPantry 3 роки тому

      @@ThePurposefulPantry thanks for the additional info. Interesting, though, because my results were really different in terms of the time difference between the Cosori and Nesco. Bottom line is that I'm happy to have both types of dehydrators. I really like the Cosori, but find it very limiting in terms of how much I can dehydrate at one time. This is especially true with something like kale, since I just can't fit much on each tray, or have to use every other tray. But I do like it a lot for smaller batches. It's definitely not uncommon for me to have both going at the same time. I've never used an Excalibur, and with the high price point would probably just buy additional Cosori or Nesco. I've thought about buying the 1000 wat Nesco, but am not sure I have room for another dehydrator, lol.

      A tip I use on my Excalibur that I just tested out this week is using an extra mesh sheet or fruit leather sheet, putting it on top of the kale, put the tray in, and then load your next tray. I don't have to take out every other tray, then! You could use parchment paper in the same way on the Cosori.

      @@ThePurposefulPantry Great tip! Thank you! Lately I've been keeping my Cosori busy with dehydrating kumquats. I live in an area with a ton of citrus trees, and finally asked someone with a loaded kumquat tree (with fruit rotting on the ground) if they minded if I picked some kumquats. She said, "PLEASE!" and then asked if I'd like a bag. :) So I've been running one load of kumquats after another. But I will get back to kale soon, because I use kale and spinach powder in my smoothies. I'll give your tip a try the next time I dehydrate kale.

  • @JohnRodriguesPhotographer

    Stackable, in my experience, is extremely in inconsistent from tray to tray. If you restack the trays you prolong the dry time each time you restack. If you don't you end up with wet on the bottom and overly dried at the top depending on where the heat source is. One of my sackles had the heat source on the bottom. So it was really dry on the bottom and really wet at the top. I just never could find a happy place in the middle for using that system. I have the Cosori dehydrator and I have gotten much more consistent results from it. I would guess for us to say I am extremely pleased with it. I primarily do beef jerky and my son really loves that. 38 years old you still has trouble control on himself and I make Korean barbecue beef jerky! A hint on beef jerky if you want to get a really lean cut of meat that isn't too expensive but still has some flavor and tenderness, I recommend using eye of round roast. I have food slicer so I can slice the meat precisely as thick as I want. I mean you can use other cuts of beef that are lean but it's kind of fun to have round pieces of meat that are beef jerky. Matter of fact I plan on making some for my new English Bull Mastiff. Anyone have any ideas on what I should season the meat with for him? Be happy to listen! I think it'll be great for him compared to the stuff in the stores.

    I wonder if it's the different in the machines, or if each machine is running under a different temperature regardless of the setting.
    EXAMPLE; set it at say 1200 each machine will go above the 1200- & turn off its heat coil. It will also go lower before it turns on its heat.
    Each machine has its own amount of unknown info they don’t tell us. They all seem to run high & low. To me & maybe only me: the faster it will dry, tells me it might be running higher in temp or turning on sooner when the temp drops. The temperature drops in all of them at some point, until its build in setting tells it to heat up again. It’s a hard run all these tests & it’s amazing on the test she did run. It’s still good info. We all love any & all info we can get. I want mine to run & not wait 2 hrs to turn it back on again. That info is something I learned on here. I can’t seem to find that info without contacting the company. Thanks for all your time & info. Great job!

    • @ThePurposefulPantry
      @ThePurposefulPantry  Рік тому

      The difference in these machines is less the temp and more the design. Cabinet-style are just a more efficient drying than stackables. And with even larger stacks you have to rotate more often. Most of mine don't need to rest. The Cosori recommends every 48 hour solid run to give it a 2 hr rest before going. The Excalibur or Nesco don't need it at all. But I've found that I have few projects that run a straight 48 hours (except blueberries and citrus), and generally in the time it takes me to pull shelves, remove product, get it ready for conditioning, wipe liners before loading something else on, it's sufficient rest time.

      Do you mean parchment? Yes - but the silicone sheets are my preference as they work much better. You just can't use any kind of fiberglass embedded baking sheet and cut it down.

    I love my Excalibur….workhorse. Look at where these items are made and the warranty.

    This was very helpful. Thank you. I have a Cosori but need a second one and am on the fence between another Cosori or an Excalibur.

      Why do you want a second one? I like the Cosori, but with gardening the Excalibur is somewhat bigger. I'm looking at buying my first.

    My air fryer has a dehydrating button. I have used it for herbs and veggies. I does it in 6 hours

    First time here, really enjoyed it and it is most helpful to my current search for a good dehydrator. Do you have a program on vaccum sealing? Looking for one of those also, especially one that seals jars.
