Is all the green stuff on the metal connections corrosion ? If it is then you should clean it off and put grease on them to prevent corrosion ! Electrical current will pass through the grease ! Just saying ! Won't the 12 volt get messed up because of the 24 volt batteries connected together ?
Long Hair..lol..James is smart as hell...super cool...my favorite channel now..I cant wait to see his boat out on the water..He inspires me to try and do it..
Yeaaay! Don’t know what I love more, those batteries (we’ve had them for 3 years now, they are 😘👌🏻) or the haircut. Duuuuude!!! Hope to see you in 2022! 🥰
Hey you two! I know, right?? These Dakotas are my absolute favorite upgrade on the boat. Zingaro's batteries were always so shit. Have fun in Bermuda! Fair winds to the Azores - it's on the bucket list for me (but it's a looooong list ;)
Could you make a battery box that was waterproof, so to flood the batteries the water would have to be as high as the floor boards or cabin sole. Great video 👍👍
I would approach the battery placement and installation keeping in mind the original boat designers plan: WATER should be kept on the exterior of the boat. A simple but logical approach to boat design and construction.
Plus it's useful to have one cockpit accessible with jumper cables and designed to be easily removed for off the boat emergencies without crippling the house bank.
I noticed all that green corrosion on your yellow cable end. Dip it in bakingsoda and vinegar to clean those terminals. Let it sit in the solution for a few minutes to give it time to creep up into the wires.
Wey Hey!! go for it Zingers. As a lifelong electrician, I would now double check the tightness of all the terminals as changes in ambient temperature and lots of other stuff can mean looseness. I have seen so many burn outs caused by looseness, I have had tore tighten my own jobs too. In fact on a vibrating boat I would check monthly man. My words come from sad experiences, fair winds and happy days to you both
Saw you had a couple of pairs of vice grips in the battery box. A suggestion. Get a couple of spanners of the correct size for your terminals. Insulate one so the ring end is exposed, the other so the jaws are exposed. Eliminates any possibility of you dropping one and causing a short. Store them in a plastic bag in the box so you never have to look for them. Works for me, but insanely jealous as only got gels.
That Suzuki Alto is a surprisingly capable little car, there is quite a bit of space with the back seats down, I used to drive one as a work car, it took some effort but I could fit a photocopier in the back of an Alto, city parking was their real strength.
Weight placement and specifically altering weight placement is critical and should never be underestimated. Keeping it consistent with original design specs is a good call in my opinion. Nice install James, although "pretty" is somewhat of a secondary focus you have a neat and tidy battery locker after completion. Battery technology has come and continues to come such a long way recently. The power that can be generated from a relatively small cell is truly approaching amazing.
Mmm I would have put fishpond liner under that tray and around them... that way if the bilge does fill they might be safe longer or be able to be 6in deeper before water gets to them... just incase
Awesome brother! Hope you get cruising soon. Something still scares me about having my battery system below the water line but all those redundancies you have in place are reassuring.
I agree Justin, but you have to be careful with all that weight and how you impact the boats original design and intentions. I think James has dealt with the situation as effectively as he could.
I would still put an emergency battery up high and wire in a switch that will alow you to switch from the main bank to the emergency battery just in case cause you have learned just how dangerous having all your battery's below the water line
Weight has always been a consideration for battery placement, however, one of the primary reasons to change to Lithium is the huge weight reduction. That should open lots of new opportunities for battery placement, especially for a displacement hull of your size.
Yes positivity I would imagine (?) is so important when locked up in a small boat on the sea for endless hour after hour. James I think has a good one hopefully her skillset is either there or can be trained fairly quickly with her.
When marking a line with a tape measure. Turn it upside down so the edges lay flat against the work. That way it won’t fold and twist so you get a straighter line. Just an easy trick.
Is it just me that thinks you look even more like Kevin Sorbo now you cut your hair? ha! nice job on the batteries James, you deserve some good luck now.
Both hair styles work for you. So I think that you should go with: what works for you. I do however think that the short hair is the best of the two. But feeling like I know you, I also feel confident, that you will do what ever suit you the best 👍
Do you plan to secure the batteries some how so they can't shift around or come flying out of the battery compartment if you get knocked down in heavy seas? Those are excellent batteries and very powerfull, I wouldn't want them to short out. It would look like a miniature version of the movie "China Syndrome" in your bilge. Good luck.
I'd buy 2 more 50Ah 24V Batteries, and place one on each side of the boat under the settees in a waterproof case as hot spares. And this isn't the 1st Oyster I've seen take on water like that. There have been dozens of boats that blew their front-facing transducers out like this. To much slamming up there for anything but hull. Those forward through-hulls should just be sealed off and transducers moved to a less stressed part of the hull.
Dakota are a nice battery . Good to see some footage bro. Can't wait to see you sailing this big old girl , very nice boat. Hey have you checked out the ( Mast R )virtical wind turbine there is a video on UA-cam I will send the link .
Rooting for you man, & great job. But don't forget a battery to make sure that pump will work if mains are submerged, I'd rather see you sailing those oceans again after the last battle than leaving things to chance. CYA. Cover those assets! Plus you have a knack for motivating me when things go horribly wrong to just bounce back stronger, smarter, & hitting faster & harder than ever before where it counts, to get back on top.
You and I have the same long hair. I don’t know what looks better because I don’t care what others think. I pull it back and use a rubber band to keep it out of my face. If you don’t have one boil down some seal blubber and slick it back. This is as close to being a pirate as us ol A gangers will ever get. Love your vids.
James....Love the hair Doo! I had a long 'mane' for years in the late 90's and was fortunate to rock it for 'Tommy Hilfiger, RLauren, BBlass, Armani and many many others in print and on the runway. Got it cut, its Sooo much cooler...and haven't gone back!!. ***Now, for Everyones pleasure watching the video. Mark the edge of your flat-screen with a piece of tape...and Watch the back end of that Red Mini Car SINK as JAMES puts the batteries in....its Ha-Larious!! Btw, My friends have been using DAKOTA Lithium batts for a few years now and Love them!! Thanks for helpn James out Dakota!!
Looks like Jimmie has been hanging around the docks and those sailor boys got ahold of him again, too pretty for his own good, nice new batteries though...
are you thinking of making the battery area waterproof when you get to the US? why didn't you introduce us to miss gorgeous? p.s. short hair makes you look not a 'grotty yachty'. i like the short hair look :-)
I have to ask, just by power output alone, how does lithium perform vs lead acid? I have 4 golfcart batteries as my "bank" in serial and parallel...I'd love to do lithium(size and weight would be wonderful), but I wonder if they give any more power. Especially when considering the money part of it.
Gotta say James , and this is one guy ( WAY older than you ) who thinks you look way more handsome with shorter hair . I would guess that the girls will think so too :) you lucky bastard :)
I thought cell balancing was a more active step than "...connecting them and letting them even up...", tho, I don't have any facts to back up my belief. Also I liked the idea someone suggested - mount a separate battery up high for a failsafe bilge pump power source.
so sure, you need to charge them all to be within as close as possible resting voltage of each other so when you hook the together there is not too much current exchange. new batteries like this it seems are already at that point and more an issue with used batteries, but still it must be checked.
its a bit different since these aren't really bare lithium cells - inside the box each one has its own BMS (battery management system) managing the cells inside each battery, they're not the 'dumb' lead acid batteries, or even the bare lithium batteries for an R/C plane.

Hey James, did you rent the car from Dennis? Good value?
Short hair makes you look more business like. ...long hair gives you a "living off the grid" look. Both look good. Personally I like the short hair♡
Long Hair..lol..James is smart as hell...super cool...my favorite channel now..I cant wait to see his boat out on the water..He inspires me to try and do it..
Gotta add some “no corrode” goop on each exposed connection. Yes - pain. Pays dividends on the other side.
YUP, especially at sea with such an aggressive environment that everything is exposed to.
Silicone spray is a cleaner alternative and works great .
Tea with a splash of milk is perfection!
Damn son. It’s been awhile. I was starting to get worried lol
same

You need to replace all those cables on that bus board and the board itself.
Looking forward to seeing you back out on the high seas Captain James!
That's a real happy ending. Way to go.
Did I miss the "happy ending", shoot I didn't even see the massage portion?
James...! You still drinking tea out of jam jars, please.. don’t change! Hope your doing well, love from Clevedon, UK
I don't normally comment on guys looks..... but the new hair style looks pretty dang good. Even makes you look smarter. Lol.
I was happy you drilled all of those holes without drilling your leg! Not even once...
Great cut. Very aerodynamic. Glad you got some trim 😁
Could you make a battery box that was waterproof, so to flood the batteries the water would have to be as high as the floor boards or cabin sole. Great video 👍👍
that would be tricky with all the heavy gauge power cables... future goals?
and more aggressive and redundant bilge system also helps!
I would approach the battery placement and installation keeping in mind the original boat designers plan: WATER should be kept on the exterior of the boat. A simple but logical approach to boat design and construction.
You could just have one battery mounted high dedicated to one or two bilge pumps for an emergency.
and your start battery
Plus it's useful to have one cockpit accessible with jumper cables and designed to be easily removed for off the boat emergencies without crippling the house bank.

Good advice, thanks 👍. Will check mine more regularly
Yes! Some progress without something going wrong .... congratulations!

That is one hell of a battery bank
Mmm I would have put fishpond liner under that tray and around them... that way if the bilge does fill they might be safe longer or be able to be 6in deeper before water gets to them... just incase
Got that David Lee Roth goin on..
Sacrificing safety for performance is for racing not cruising sailboats...best luck as always man. Hope those new nails do it..:)
Hey bro, use dielectric grease on all electric connections to avoid corrosion and sulphate.
First-time I see a battery bank done proprely by taking the negative from the last and positive the first battery's or vise versa great job james
Awesome brother! Hope you get cruising soon. Something still scares me about having my battery system below the water line but all those redundancies you have in place are reassuring.

"And look guys nothing is on fire" yet :)
Thanks for the instructive tutorial on linking Lithium batteries together into one bank.

Excellent, thanks
ARGH soon capt J will be ruling the 7 seas where we need him taking us sailing. So excited to know you'll be out in the drink 🚢 ⛵
That was funny at the end! Your crew is very cute in body, attitude and voice. You can see that she is bubbly and I love that.

Is that captain Ron's car!!! The one that rolled off the dock.....lol.....Oh and your new look is just great!!
you didn't put those two lead acid batteries in parallel with the rest of your lithium batteries did you?
Great too see you back on track! Good info about Li batteries. Also, love the background music.
Ah, feel the power James. Electrons flowing, ions roaring. Man the shower must have been electrifying.
Is it just me that thinks you look even more like Kevin Sorbo now you cut your hair? ha!
nice job on the batteries James, you deserve some good luck now.
Yay my man! Good to see you happy and electrified! Stoked to see you sail again dewd! 💙
Nice battery setup. I would have them in a rubber lined tray and a good quality rubber seal with heavy duty toggle catches. Hair looking good mate 👍
Great video. I equally enjoy the high seas adventures and repair and upgrade videos.
More to come!
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼Great progress!! Happy to hear that things are going well!!
Yea is good, black, green, ginger, mango, green tea with lemon etc

MY NIGGA CLEANED HIMSELF UP!! LOOKS GOOD!! SHORT LOOKS BETTA!

I LOVE your new haircut!

You are a funny guy but she was funny with her bit about the shower. So glad to see you working things out.
Great to see you back James, looking very sharp :)
Some of your cabling is showing pretty nasty corrosion. High resistance connections will be the result, that creates heat and current losses.
Enjoy your cooler summer cut but now grow it out again for winter. Once you start losing your hair then you can go short. Growers gotta grow!
Nice hypress...
Great enthusiasm from your crew.
Go with the Short hair in the hot weather.!👍
Great install James ! As for the hair, my humble opinion would be that short suits you 😊👍
Hahaha, almost sank the boat episode! Scariest thing ever, but you made it sound very nonchalant.
Good choice on the multi plus that's the exact same one I have
reminds be of the battery bank on the sub
Keep working dude it is almost ready to sail.

What a cool comment. Thanks Rob. Much love bro
Can't believe it's been 9 months! Cheers to 9 years of sailing!
NICE Job James!
Looking soft bud, get that low T fixed bruh, love the little chocolate bunny ya got,
The summer haircut works best on You!

Hahaha. A gang would use the hair out of the drains to make the band.
No man bun ! ! !
Definately a fan of the short hair.

FemBoy Fridays? thats when i paint my nails
I wish there was a little space between each battery. Idk for safety I guess. Yes/No?
I think that weight is a problem but lifepo are much lighter than other types
thats what i was thinking, expressed opinions more from lead installs
Looks like Jimmie has been hanging around the docks and those sailor boys got ahold of him again, too pretty for his own good, nice new batteries though...
Battery jinga!
Figured he's been in rehab. Just amazing.
Longhair!!!
Be careful not to drill through your knee!
Batteries are nice, but she’s Gorgeous!
Love your videos
Thanks, Mike! Appreciate that
Do you prefer monohull vs cat if you were going round the world again??
are you thinking of making the battery area waterproof when you get to the US? why didn't you introduce us to miss gorgeous?
p.s. short hair makes you look not a 'grotty yachty'. i like the short hair look :-)
Major league upgrade brother!
Holaa! ⛵
Let it grow again Bro
Nice haircut!

Looks like a great spot for a fire extinguisher. lol
A lithium runaway fire? Nothing is going to put that out
James Looking Fresh...
I prefer the long caveman hair but does look smart short
Hair looks great. 10 years younger. Hope the solar is enough to drive all those batteries.
Gotta say James , and this is one guy ( WAY older than you ) who thinks you look way more handsome with shorter hair . I would guess that the girls will think so too :) you lucky bastard :)
