    It's always nice to see someone who completes this model "with" the sails. I don't know why so many people spend so much time building this only to puss out when it's time to finish it and "put the sails on!!" The sails are 50% of the allure of this type of model and really makes it an exceptional looking model. I built this model 10 years ago. It took me about 400 hours.

    i bought this Revell kit back in '91 in Houston .. and got it built a year later back home in Asia! hahaa.. not as finely crafted as yours, and i took a lot of liberty in doing things my way.. but that was a lot of fun as i love model craft and these tall sailing ships were a great mystery since i was a kid ala "Unicorn"
    that old model was pretty much busted after more than two decades.. and it finally broke apart in a thundrstorm, falling off the shelve.
    i never thought i'd do it again.. but i had just "finished" rebuilding the ship after dismantling everything and putting it all back again . a few parts were missing or beyond repair.. i decided not to put on the sails.
    Rediscovered that love of model making! cant stop for the past week.. incredible.
    What a beauty!

    Many thanks for posting - this is a fantastic build of arguably the finest (and certainly the biggest and most complicated!) model of a wooden ship ever made available to model enthusiasts. I love your use of authentic canvas sails; also, your choice of Smetana's 'Ma Vlast'. Bravo!!!

      You can also use tissue paper for sails - spray wet it after installation (not soaking wet) and when it drys, what an amazing look.

    Awesome build. Had this very same model in the early 70s, and again in the mid 90s. I miss this model. Burglars stole the unbuilt 90s kit from me in the late 90s. Never got to even start it. Thanks for sharing this. Nicely done!

    Perfect posting of video with incorporated stills as steps in build! Keeps it all in great perspective with such an easily overwhelming project. A few off the path things I plan. Never see these Great sailing ships in the water, plan to go with decent wave action. Also using the Vac. form kit sails as templates, laying glue soaked fine cloth over them. To cut down on tedium, will make one each cannon cleaned, sanded, then cast in resin. Great job!

    I built this kit as a teenager...and hang rigged deadeye s n shrouds....however ship was damaged in a move ..was do discouraged vessel was deep fixed!
    I'm now in middle of another revell 1/96 clipper note..easyer to start rigging inside out... down hauls first ...all sail gear on yards before placing them.
    I can sail and know all nomiclature.i went down to the sea at 14 yrs.
    I miss the tall ships...

      Jerome: it is all in the tools that you accumulate over the years to make it easier to do these, and , most important, when it comes to the rigging, learning to do it in the order that makes more sense, rather than just following the order in the instructions.

    • @robhill8894
      @robhill8894 9 місяців тому

      @@DrGargani YES! The instructions should be changed. Assemble everything on the mast before installing them. Attach extra long lines to the tie downs on the interior pegs first so you only have to route them up through the block and tackles and then down to the outer pegs. That would save a lot of time and frustration trying to reach in between the ever populating rigging.

    Joshua, thank you *very much* for taking the time to put this video together - I'm all 'Captain Aubrey'ing' right now and am weirdly obsessed with the period and hardware at the moment. I understand the splinter-netting now too! The little winglet shroud enclosures on either side of the captain's cabin are a mystery to me though.

    I built this model 45 years ago. It was a Christmas present. I still have it. It's had its share of repairs over the years....including the time our then pet iguana decided to jump to the top of our hutch and continued to climb over the stern, damaging the rigging and breaking the mast. The repairs were successful thanks to patience and Super Glue. The initial build took several months to complete. I love this video..... Did you pull the rigging cord through beeswax to stiffen it?

    I seldom criticize another modeler's work but there is so much more that could have been done to make this a much better model. Just because a plastic model is molded in different colors doesn't mean paint isn't needed. A block of beeswax or even a candle to pull the rigging line through would reduce the fuzzies. Stays and shrouds are much heavier line and the higher up the masts the lighter the line. Standing rigging is taut, I have built this model several times and I know the plastic spars can be pulled out of place but there is usually a line that will allow you to pull it the other way. Very touchy process. Running rigging is never heavier than standing rigging and the ratlines are much smaller than the shrouds. I never used the plastic shrouds and ratlines provided. If you use different size threads you will have much better looking results. Takes a little longer but it's worth it. Finally, the glue issue, use good thin glue and use it sparingly. Thin Tamiya is one of the best. One of the biggest flaws in this kit is the three piece spar deck. almost impossible to get rid of the seams. My solution was to join the ends of the deck together and then reinforce with plastic strips under the deck. Carefully fill the seams and with fine sandpaper or a file, clean up the seam. Paint the deck and the seams will virtually disappear. It will be a little more difficult to install but there will be enough bend in the deck that it can be accomplished. I know, I did it. I didn't write this critique to slam this model, I wrote it for the guys who are thinking about building it. I built the model for my brother and my two sisters were unhappy about it so I built one for each of them. Good way to start a family feud.

      I have just started working on this model. What do you think about building it with sails (running) or without sails (standing). I already don't like the plastic sails, and thinking about using silkspan instead. Even if I don't make sails unfurled, I'd like to roll them and still attached to the yards. What do you think. Also, I was thinking of making it floating it on sea, instead of using the pedastals (look kind of cheezy). But that means I can't use the name plate, or may be I can have a engraved brass plate made and attach it to the outside of the plexi case with a wood base. Too fancy fpr comparetively cheep plastic model? I'd appreciate any suggestions, recommendations. This is my first attempt. I think I can handle it. We'll see.

      Are you on Facebook ? A week ago I published a series of photos on the site 'Ship Models'. About 45 years ago I made the USS Constitution in 1/96 scale without sails. I came across the photos when I was digitizing my photo collection. I would also like to hear your opinion about the result of my efforts in those days. Here on UA-cam, or else in the topic on Facebook.

    • @robhill8894

      I used on big piece of balsa wood for the upper deck. I used the provided plastic pieces as a template. I glued them together and added duck tape to both sides for strength and then traced the outline and cut outs on the wood. Tensions were high when I was trying to fit it in without breaking it, but it worked. No seams and the real wood grain looked so much better. If I do one again, I think I'll leave off a bit of glue on the hull near the top couple of inches to allow more flex a little bit while using clamps below the non glue line, then glue it after the top deck is installed.

    Thanks for posting!! Will be a great help in my second attempt to do the ship. I got as far as the cannons on the top deck the first time but couldnt get the thread from the rudder to stay tight around the wheel. I know half of this stuff I dont even know how to do and the rigging will confuse me left and right. If I can get mine to turn out half as good as yours did I will be very pleased! Hopefully I can have it done by next July. Any idea on a time table?

      I'm actually kinda far into it buddy. But I'm at a stopping point because I guess when I glued the hulls together it wasn't perfect lol so now I'm at the point where I have to mouth the top deck and the hulls are kinda spread open a little bit so it's not really a tight fit. It looks as if the decks are too small for it so I'm kind of stuck.

    What a shame about the paint work, to say nothing of some of the window detailing. If someone is going to spend that amount of cash it is worth taking a lot more time rather than throwing it together to get it done quickly. I am about to start this particular model, and envisage at least 18 months of regular work, a lot of it with a magnifying glass to get the details correct.

    • @robhill8894
      @robhill8894 9 місяців тому

      I agree. I see so many people build this model and they cut corners and most don't install the sails. If you are going to start a difficult project like this, why not take you r time and do it with pride? It's not a race. If you get discouraged or frustrated, just walk away, think of a solution, and come back to it. I wanted to smash mine a number of times but took breaks, made small projects out of it, (removing flash, sanding, painting etc) then came back to it with a fresh perspective.
