    Credit has to be given to Vinci. Imagine her nerves, nearing the end of her career and reaching the semis of the US Open against Serena! This match would have been a major achievement for her even if she hadn't won.

      Let's be real: Serena's prime was from 2012-2014 with her peak being in 2013. This is nowhere near prime Serena. This loss was big, but Serena went on to win 2 more majors while Roberta lost in the final and retired. Plus, the women's field around this time finally figured out how to handle Serena's power: variety and all-court presence. To say Vinci was the person who changed her career invalidates what Serena has done since.

    What has been underestimated about Vinci's performance in this match is the way she consistently put Serena in positions where she had to hit the ball back to where Vinci was at the net waiting for it. Another factor which has been overlooked is that after winning the career grand slam in doubles Vinci and Errani split up their doubles partnership to concentrate on singles. Vinci had been working on her singles game for most of 2015. After defeating Williams she rose to number 7 in the world by defeating Belinda Bencic (a former Olympic gold medal winner in siingles) in a WTA tournament in St Petersburg. She became the oldest woman to debut in the top ten with that victory. So Vinci was a much better player than she gets credit for.

    This match changed Serena and her aura of invincibility.
    At this stage Serena had won 21 out of 25 Grand Slam finals in singles. She would play a further 8 finals and only win two more.
    I was devastated for her - I really wanted to see her accomplish the calendar Grand Slam.
    If memory serves me right, this was the first year the women's final at the US Open sold out before the men's - that was how convinced people were that Serena was goung to be in the final.

    I wasn't actually surprised that Serena lost. I remember hearing Steffi Graf talk about just how absolutely exhausting the pressure was when she won the grand slam in 1988. When she eventually won the US Open final, she was so mentally exhausted that she didn't want to leave her hotel room. With that kind of pressure, I thought the odds were that Serena wouldn't get through.

      @@trippytrellis7033 Right. A non-calendar Grand Slam is still extremely impressive but not quite as impressive as the calendar slam is. The level of pressure in the latter is significantly greater. Navratilova also came up just short in the semifinal of the 1984 Australian Open (the last major at the time), and only Steffi has done it in the Open Era. Actually, Navratilova's loss is eerily similar to Serena's, as she also fell to a great doubles player who never won a singles major.

    Is Serena the women's GOAT? Winning percentage (in order from best to relative worst): Court, Evert, Graf, Martinaa, Serena. Most slam finals: Court, Evert, Martina, Graf, Serena. Early round losses at slams: Serena by far. Most wins: Martina, Evert, Court, Graf, Serena Most tournaments won: Martina, Evert, Court, Graf, Serena. Most slam wins: Court, Serena, Graf, MArtina-Evert (but those two skipped ten slams each at the height of their careers to play different tournaments, which were more important to women' professional tennis at the time.) Most weeks at number one: Graf (by far), Martina, Serena, Evert,(no official ranking system....Evert would have been a virtual tie with Serena if you cont the year before the computer was used. Serena is the fifth greatest women's player ever.

    • @joemarshall4226
      @joemarshall4226 2 роки тому

      @Max E It's not an important number to me when judging relative merit. The total number of slams is much more important...whether you won them all in the same year is just an anecdotal thing. Serena and Martina each won a slam, but they were not "calendar year" slams...but it's really the same accomplishemnt. Serena skipped the Australian Open due to injury, then won the next four slams in a row. Martina did an amazing thing...she reached 14 straight slam finals (she skipped one due to injury). That's much more impressive than a a grand slam, to me. And Margaret Connelly, in the early 50s, won the first nine slams she entered, all as a teenager.....She skipped some due to travel, etc.
