This is a great message, the more experience I have with yarn, the more I learn what I like, and don't like. This is a huge factor in how I purchase yarns for projects now as well, thank you Bonnie !! 💖💖💖
Very good advice, thank you! I've also realized that the some of the lovely colors I'm attracted to buy are not always the colors I end up wearing.
Jolene Larson so true! Same here. Makes shopping easier and saves a lot of money in the long run!
Thank you so much for this video! I’ve pressed the like button before having watched it as I was excited to see it published.
Thanks for your advice!
Thank you Lourdes!
I struggle with the right yarn to pick for the project . I've often bougt yarn "on spec" then never used it because it isn't good for anything. Thanks for the video!
It makes sense. We put a lot of time and energy into our projects. Choosing a good yarn is my biggest decision. If doesn't look and feel good it won't be used.
Thank you for this! I recently crocheted a top but hated how stiff it was. This is great advice! :)
Great video, Bonnie! You have given me a lot to think about.
I can't wait for the sweater video series! 😊
This is good information thank you. I believe I like cotton to wear too.
Just checked the label of my go-to cardigan. Cashmere. I'm doomed to financial destitution. LOL
Ha ha! I understand that! 😂😂😂
I like yarn that's a 4 weight in the winter time. I also like yarn that is soft and easy to crochet with. I don't make sweaters but I do make blankets. I would like to learn to make a sweater and I can't wait for your sweater series
Thank you Karen! I hope to film this sometime this fall/winter. Sorry I can't be more exact on the timing! Thanks for your kind reminder.
@@BonnieBayCrochet your welcome
Thanks for the great suggestions. I'll go through my closets first to set aside what I never wear, then check the fiber of the remaining sweaters. Lots of time and love go into a sweater. Might as well make it to last!
Thankyou for this great advice ❤️😊
Good information! Thanks for Sharing.
Can 100% cotton and a cotton blend both be used in the same project that you are crocheting ( granny squares)
I don't have a problem wearing or working with acrylic but I do think higher end quality yarns are better and are more likely to sell if that if is your desired result. Big, bulky 80's style sweaters, regardless of what Vogue magazine says, will never go out of style or comfort. I've sold to 80+ year old customers and my daughter (now 23) has worn out two of them. But that is, as you mentioned, because of pilling. I give a full demonstration and gift of a sweater shaver (I buy in lots from China) with every sweater I sell. A lot of women think that pilling is the end-all of a knitted or crocheted fabric. It isn't. Now, personally, I refuse to pay the price of luxury yarns. Not to say that I still don't spend A LOT on enough to make a sweater...I do. But some acrylic yarns work up beautifully and are incredibly soft and snuggly. My favorite go-to yarn for almost any project (unless specified or needed) is Caron Simply Soft or it's matching Hobby Lobby equivalent. Loosely woven is still warm and comfortable and tightly woven is not bulky. I love this stuff!! Gimme' a yarn bowl full of that and a hook and I'm happy for days on end!! LoL...
Thanks for the great input, Bonnie. Always a pleasure to hear our favorite vloggers speak to us directly. God bless!!
Thank you Cat Chick (great name)! I would love to learn more of those sweater shavers. And yes, there are some amazing acrylics on the market now - and I use a lot of them. Would love to see some of your amazing sweaters!
Thanks Bonnie, always good advice! Plus, if you’re going to take the time to handcraft something, it’s always nice to use yarn that will last.
Amen to that Rosie!
Awesome!!
I just finished crocheting my first summer top with a caron cotton cake, which is 60% cotton and 40% acrylic. So far it feels nice and soft and doesn't make me feel overheated which makes me happy because this yarn is affordable for me at the moment:)
AnishNorge that’s great! I’m all for affordability! Yes the blends are great options.
@@BonnieBayCrochetcan I use 80%wool 20%acrylic yarn for sweater
me - i love acrylic fibre , i can`t wear wool and i dont like 100 % cotton
Hi Bonnie, thank you so very much for this information. I have my own quirks with acrylic, it's the piling, and the stiffness that it makes the project turn into. I have no idea what's ideal in choosing the right yarn for a sweater, I've never done one before. But, when your video becomes available I plan to use whatever you are using. For me, I consider this a learning experience. Others may already know these things. But when I said I'm here to learn from you I meant A through Z. Thank you.
I’ve never thought about it, Bonnie but I will check out my sweaters. Great tip! Thanks!
That really makes sense! I have a few sweater patterns i'm just getting a start on and i'm now going to rethink what i'm going to use :) I just wish there were more cotton options in my area stores as I too wear breathable cottons because i'm "that certain age ". Will have to look for online sales!
Thank You great point
Always wondered why I didn't like many sweaters, shirts etc. I have always loved cotton, cotton sweaters, socks etc. Now I know, lol. Thought it was just me. Thanks Bonnie! Be blessed!
Renee Mellace thank you!
Alpaca.... Uhmm... I've never used that. I really want to make a sweater so this was really helpful! Thanks
Do you have any suggestions on brands for alpaca yarn? I'm not sure what is best for a sweater 🤔
Hi Bonnie, thank you for this video. Lori Schreiner
I am making my granddaughter a sweater, and because I live in FL I choose cotton blend for my yarn, figuring it’ll be plenty warm for our winters and breathable also. Thank you for this. It was good to see a sweater after it aged... helps with the yarn decision making for sure.
Thanks Tammie! Enjoy that Florida sunshine for me today. I would love to move back someday.
Thanks Bonnie! Looking forward to the sweater tutorial.
Hi Bonnie, thank you for the information, It helped .
Cotton Cotton Cotton!❤❤
Ty
How many balls of yarn did you use for a sweater? 3-5?
It's hard to say since it really depends upon the yarn being used, as well as the size & design of the sweater.
@@BonnieBayCrochet thank you so much! Well I am really nervous and worried about the yarns not being enough for a sweater. You see I'm a beginner and I want to make a special crochet sweater for my boyfriend for his 18th bday🙂
@@reginenaisa1711 I do have a My First Crochet Sweater video on my channel you should check out! It uses a lighter DK (#3) weight yarn and can be for a guy or gal!

I hadn't given it much thought but looking at old project notes I seem to mostly go for wool/acrylic blends for winter wear and cotton/nylon blends for summer. I avoid polyester all together as it gives me a rash
Oh dear! That's a good reason to avoid a particular fiber Tammy!
This was very helpful. Would you consider doing a video on best types of cotton and cotton blends for sweaters? I am allergic to wool and wool blends. So I am left with cotton and acrylic or cotton blends. I do live in a cold area, but also acrylic causes me to be hot when it is too much fiber content.
Thanks for the suggestion Lisa. Have you ever tried alpaca? This is said to be non-allergenic for folks allergic to wool. Just be sure you get pure alpaca because this can often be found as a blend with sheep wool.
I choose a cotton yarn sweater. I live in Southern California.
Love it Jacki! There are so many wonderful, thinner cottons available these days too. Also looking forward to visiting your area in a few weeks. Will be my first real trip to CA!
Thanks for this video great information. I am allergic to wool so that can not be a. Fiber I can choose for a sweater. So what cotton would you recommend for a sweater project? Jan
There are many options on the market, but I guess it all depends on what you will be doing with the cotton, whether a summer or a winter sweater. I just made a summer sweater out of this yarn and it came out very nice: www.berroco.com/yarns/berroco-modern-cotton-dk. If you use a heavier weight yarn (worsted), it might be good to get a blend with acrylic because a winter cotton sweater can be on the heavy side. If you are crocheting, I wouldn't go any heavier than DK (#3), and lean towards sport weight (#2).
BonnieBayCrochet thanks for the information, now I know what to shop for. You are great! Jan
Hi Bonnie, thank you for this information. I’m allergic to wool; is baby alpaca a type of wool? Thank you.
It is very different from sheep wool, and is considered non-allergenic. Alpaca are part of the camelid family, which are very different from sheep. I would definitely take a look at this! Just be sure you get pure alpaca, and not a blend with sheep wool.
BonnieBayCrochet: Thank you so much for your quick reply. I will get 100% baby alpaca. Have a nice day Bonnie 🌷
You are so right, what a good way to make choices
Ha ha! I'm just sorry it took me so long to realize this!
