I have a gift tote. It sits in the bottom of my closet. My parents are on a fixed income so my gifts to them are largely practical things like vitamins, razors, body wash, shampoo, etc for the year. So while I shop I look for clearance deals, I coupon, and find BOGO deals and I put them in there so that Christmas is not so costly.

Oh my goodness, now I have to clean out my fridge tomorrow, my last day off of a 5 day reprieve from work. But you're so right, no procrastinating, I must get to it! And I've had a gift stash for years, always finding clearance items: candles, chocolate, etc...and more specific items for specific people.

Cutting up the watermelon to store in the fridge is something we do at our house, too. It makes it so much easier when you want to eat it. However, we drain the liquid at least once per day. If you don't do that it tends to get a sour taste after a day or two and it ruins the fruit.

Another tip for watermelon, and this applies to cantaloupe too, put a paper towel on the bottom to collect the access juices. I find the watermelon lasts alot longer and doesn’t get slimy.

I use lazy Susan’s in my fridge for small jars of stuff that tend to get lost for easier access. You could also slice the bagels in half then slice, season and toast in the oven for bagel chips.

When I was a kid, one of my aunts gave my grandma (her mother) a very practical box every Christmas filled with a can of coffee, sugar, canned evaporated milk, flour, etc. Grandma loved her daily coffee with milk and sugar, and she loved to bake. Even as a kid, I knew that was a great Christmas gift for my grandma, who was on a very fixed income.

I am going to a little girls 3rd birthday birthday picnic on the weekend. This little girl has recently came to live with her Grandparents and they have had to buy her a complete new wardrobe and toys so doesn’t need a lot. I am making her play doh in 5 different colours and good sized amounts, and will buy the play doh tools from K Mart to go with it. I can make the 5 play doh colours for less than one small pot from the store. I have beautiful gift bags I bought at a Garage sale for a few cents that I will put the gift in.
The maple syrup bottle makes a cute vase for a small posy.

Beautiful ideas for Christmas gifts and great decor idea from Paul. I made up some gift baskets last year to give to households. I wanted to support local and bought this and that from around town. It ended up being quite expensive although everyone enjoyed them and it was all useful or consumable goods. I love the idea of including some thrifted items. These gifts you are planning with be very heartfelt. Also.. my community has a ReUse centre and everything is free this year. I go often to look for craft supplies for my junk journals that I make. In my travels I have found beautiful Christmas cards, tags and tissue paper. I think I'm set for a few years now and all for free. Thank you both for all of your great ideas and encouragement during these crazy times.

Hi Emmy! I use those glass maple syrup bottles to make vanilla extract which also makes a beautiful gift. So easy to do and economical esp if you find vanilla beans on sale. I also use the vanilla beans twice to make extract and then I use the beans to either make vanilla sugar or coffee creamer. I really get my money's worth!

Another great video. I thought it was funny that I was sautéing some spinach when I started watching your video. The spinach was forgotten about and I needed to do something with it before it went bad. You made a good point about cleaning out the fridge. I also bought a watermelon over the weekend that I sliced in chunks to take to work. When I saw your corn pudding and ham, I thought that would make a delicious corn and ham chowder. Great haul at the church tag sale. I would love any of those gifts. I tend to buy things on sale after the holiday and put them in the attic with my Christmas decorations. It's always a surprise to me when I find them the following year.

I watched this while cleaning out the fridge! You are always a perfect work partner, ha! I also started Christmas shopping today. My mother in law has a strawberry themed kitchen. Not quite as good of a deal as you got, but all of Bath and Body works strawberry scented things are on major sale. Those summer sales are great! There were also some winter soaps and candles I picked up for the mailman, teachers gifts and hostess gifts. Great ideas as always! Love and hugs from Chicago. P.s. we are melting today, I know you will be happy in a few days when it gets to you. I'm ready for fall, haha.

I mainly gift consumable items. No one needs more clutter. I have a box in my closet with candles, scented hand soap or lotions, and maybe small kitchen tools like rubber spatulas or wooden spoons which often wear out. At Christmas time I make cookies, candies, breads, etc. to give to my friends. I also regift or give away most items which are given to me if I can't use them. Now is a good time to make jam for gifts.

What a fun Christmas haul. I love all the items you picked up. I used to have a gift box, but haven't added to it in a while. Not as much gift giving anymore. I had some glass syrup bottles that I saved and now use as vases on my shelf. I buy dollar store flowers to put in them and change them out with the seasons/holidays. Of course I save my flowers and reuse them each year. Time to go check the fridge. I know it's overflowing.

Heck YES! I have a gift closet. I like to pick up a bunch of little travel/trial lotions, soaps, lip balm, etc. during one- of the two- times I shop during the year at Bath & Body Works... their semi-annual sale, which is going on right NOW! I head for the 75% off section and I'll try to get sets of like scents (ex: get lotion, bubble bath, etc. of the Twisted Peppermint scent after Christmas if I know a friend or family member likes that particular scent) and I'll gift those sets on their birthday, or for the next Christmas, depending. I always get lots of the mini hand creams from the 75% off bin as well to put in things like care packages for college students, or a "spa day" set for a frazzled friend, or even a "hospital care package" for someone going in for surgery (the air is so dry in hospitals!). I pretty much know the interests and humor of my family and friends, so if I see something like, say a Cleveland Browns t-shirt that is on clearance when spring rolls around, I'll grab that because I know my dad will like it, and I can give him official NFL gear for 90% off on Father's Day! It's like a year long scavenger hunt, seriously, but so much fun!

I LOVE the cookie plate idea! I will be looking for some for next year. I always do gift baskets for family. Its cheaper and more practical. I shop for the nieces/nephews/my kids during christmas in July. I bought for 10 kids for $55. My kids have a limit for how much we spend ($100 each). We buy clothes, and needs mostly. Everyone else likes to buy the toys, and that is fine. This year, I am organizing a toy swap with our church. You bring in your nice used toys, books, clothes, etc. And you pay a small fee to come shop. The money goes towards a church ministry. It will be a huge blessing for so many of us struggling! I'm so very excited.

I have to be creative as to where I put gifts as my granddaughters are very “observant”😉. An old cardboard bankers box in my closet looks boring enough not to be interesting. My biggest problem is not wanting to wait until their birthday or Christmas to give it to them but I’m getting better. They love to do crafts so now I buy the little holiday craft kits after the holidays are over at a greatly reduced price and stash them away until the next time that holiday comes around.

    Care About You!
Oh, I must tell you. My husband also freezed leftover pig steak and he made pig muffins out of the leftovers!☺️ He's a long distance truck driver, so we don't have to smell the cow and the pig since we don't eat them. We do eat all dairy products, but we make our own cheese and homemade baked goods. We pretend we're at the beach everyday and open all the windows and bought extra fans and don't use the AC whatsoever. So that's another $1,000 a year we're saving. Hope you had a good laugh about the pig muffins, as we did with my husband!

      Care About You!
You're not the only one that's hahaha! We literally fell off the couch when we saw your husband literally put the flesh of the pig in the freezer! I tell my husband the same thing, that he's eating dead animals including the cow that called steak and sirloin, but he doesn't believe it's dead animals, he said it's called meat!
This year is first time we cut off the air conditioning like the Amish people, the strict ones that don't believe in electricity. That's why I think they have hundreds of acres of property. So that's our next goal like the Amish people!

Love the intro so much! Use the syrup bottle for homemade salad dressing or vinaigrette if you make those. I wish we had been more frugal gift givers years ago. I think if we had been brave enough to, other family and friends would have jumped at the chance to do it too. We are older now and don't exchange gifts so much now, but it still applies. Great candle finial ideas! Wonderful ceramic pieces. A lot of thrift store items are new or gently used at most. My gift closet contains (or will contain soon) pieces of jewelry and nice decor pieces that I will start gifting family and friends whenever they stop by. I don't decorate as much for the seasons or holidays as I used to and since retired I don't wear jewelry as much. Time to declutter and bless others with items they like now and not wait for holidays. Thank you for all of the ideas and motivation. Blessings to all of your family.

You gave me a great idea to gift someone with something I have laying around the house. Instead of giving it to them now I will give it to them for Christmas! Also I bought a bottle of rum and have a big bag of pecans, white corn syrup and vanilla wafers to make rum balls during Christmas.😀

Another great episode! I save syrup jars and other jars for many different uses. I soak off the labels and they become flower vases for fresh flowers from the garden to send home with guests or to take to hostesses. Tie a pretty (saved) ribbon or even some jute into a bow to make it more special. Larger ones I send leftovers home when my kids come for a visit. Recently I for quart sized spaghetti jars, my granddaughter and I had a fun time filling with layers of flour, sugar, baking powder, cocoa powder, etc. for brownies. We put directions and what to add (eggs, oil, water) on the outside or onto a card and tied it on. She took them home so she can make some fast brownies for her family and feel good about her new baking skills. The jars are being reused and no need for anyone to keep track of something that has to be returned to the owner.

Hello Emmy & Paul. Another really helpful video, thank you. I use my empty maple 🍁 syrup bottles (200ml) to gift my home-infused blackberry gin and limocello to friends at Christmas.
Yes, I have a gift storage area in my home. It's two rolling storage crates under my bed that years ago I purchased to keep shoes in. One crate is for Christmas gifts and the other for birthday gifts. I keep a spreadsheet where I log my purchases so that I don't get muddled.

Tip to make your cut watermelon last longer….put the cut pieces in a colander before setting in your food storage container. Letting your watermelon pieces sit in the juices makes them spoil much faster. Love this ideas for Christmas! I am blessed with three wonderful granddaughters ages four, five, and six years old. Fortunately they are still too young to be brand name aware! Throughout the year I pick up new and like new small toys, books, games and art supplies at thrift stores and yard sales and add them to my stash. I also shop the sales racks at the end of the season for clothes for them, buying a size or two larger than they are presently wearing. For Easter I gave them sand buckets -$1.25 each from Dollar Tree-filled with individually wrapped tiny treasures and a few pieces of candy. And a few weeks ago I gave them their new bathing suits purchased last fall or just three dollars apiece! My granddaughters agree that Grandma gives the best presents!

I had to pause the video after the Great Fridge Cleanout of 2022 segment. Love the music you added, it fit perfectly. We have a counter depth fridge so it’s not as deep which is a good and bad thing. Not as much room inside but then we don’t walk into it either as we pass through the kitchen. I am always annoyed that most food storage containers are round because so much space gets lost in the fridge. I use canning jars to store our leftovers as much as possible as it’s easy to see what’s in them and they are easy to clean, or square or rectangular containers. No lost space in the corners. For all the tortillas you have, consider pinwheel/roll up sandwiches which are great on a hot day. Ok, on with the rest of the video. 😊

Gift ideas I have made that were a hit. 1. cheese platter set with knives in square box with a smaller box of black magic chocolates, a smaller round tin of biscuits, and a smaller box of brie cheese stacked and wrapped in 3 different gold paper, wrapped in cellophane and tied with a gold ribbon.(total cost $12 CAD $9.26USD. 2. Clear ice bucket stuffed with tissue paper with a bottle of prosecco (classy blue label) and 2 fluted wine glasses, stuffed with baby blue tissue paper and wrapped in white snowflake cellophane and tied with a blue ribbon (cost under $10 USD). 3. Mini coffees & small package of homemade biscotti in a coffee mug, wrapped with tissue and cellophane and tied with ribbon. 4.Wrapped and stacked Laura Secord tea set with chocolates($4 dollar stores), blackberry jam ($2) and box of Turkish delights ($3) top with bow. Yes I have a gift closet and I just need a couple of small gifts left to pick up for Christmas and I am done. Most things I have gotten for 60% or more less than the original price and have stayed on budget. I am so proud of myself. Great video as always.

Our Quilting Guild in Fl. had a Quilt Show every two years and we had a venue with gift baskets. Any theme the member wanted to make and donate. The people attending bought tickets and would drop the tickets a little box in front of the basket. At the end of the show the numbers were drawn. We raised lots of money for the guild this way. I had a gift basket business back in the 90's and people loved my baskets. What made the basket was the bows I put on them. I learned to make them by working for free for a local florist to learn how to work with flowers and arranging. I also had a sales tax # and got into many places and could buy wholesale. Another secret is to fill the bottom of the vessel with balled up paper to raise all the items at eye level and fill the spaces in-between with wrapped hard candy or kisses. Yes everything is in presentation.
I went to trade shows to learn the tricks of the trade. The shows were free to anyone in business.

I have a gift room lol. I shop year round for Christmas. I do big “stockings” for all the kids, full of random things I find all year. I watch for clearance items, especially at Costco. The kids tell me they love the stockings, which are actually things like laundry baskets, wastebaskets, wicker baskets etc-just whatever I think of that year that is not only suitable to load with stuff, but something they can use.

I make quilted table runners for gifts lately. They charge big bucks for them at the Quilt Show boutiques. Sometimes the recipient wants one made in another theme. I don't like to sell things and usually say no You don't have to pay for it, but if the person is really close to me I will make it. They usually send a gift card and thank you note. I have been making my DIL a theme for every holiday. That is her Christmas Gift or Birthday Gift from me. So far I have made her the Christmas season, Valentine's Day, Thanksgiving/Fall, Down on the Farm and Easter/Spring theme. I have St.Pat, Baseball, Football, summer beach, & Fourth of July/Patriotic theme Fabric waiting to get whipped up. The themes are endless.

Hi Emmy and Paul! Thanks for another great video. I need to go through and give my refrigerator a good clean out as it has been a bit since I've done that. I've stayed on top of keeping things cleaned out of there but it needs a good scrubbing. I always appreciate saying Paul demoing how he utilizes the food saver to package up meals for future use. In answer to your question do I have a gift closet? Yes!! What do I keep in it? Admittedly it leans toward the girly kind of stuff. If I find a good buy on Yankee candles, cute kitchen towels, coffee mugs, anything dachshund related for my rescue friends or to donate for fundraisers, winter throws, coffee pods and other cute kitchen things like oil and vinegar cruets. Although I'm not able to get out to tag sales or similar events, because of my physical limitations, I am very good at scouring online sites for savings and bargains. If I find nice items for a bargain price, I will pick it up and put it away for a hostess gift or a Christmas gift basket. For Christmas 2020, for my two close girlfriends that are neighbors, I put together what I called a pandemic survival gift box. It had a glass microwave popcorn popper, a large bag of popcorn, a pair of fleece lined knit cabin socks, a pair of heavy boot socks, a tube of Burt's Bees lip balm and a candle. Since at the time none of us were going out and doing anything and we were all pretty well stuck at home, they worked well since we were all watching a lot of movies and it was pretty darn cold so we needed to keep warm. I have to admit I'm not very good at physically assembling gift baskets but I've seen at the Dollar Tree where you can get the large plastic bags that are the cellophane that you can use to actually put the gift basket in to keep everything together. You did such a wonderful job of finding things at your tag sale Emmy. That vintage tablecloth you got for yourself is absolutely beautiful! Poor Dixie Belle wanted some ham so badly!

I have an area in my craft room that is out-of-the way from peeping eyes lol that I use to store all my deals I purchased throughout the year to use at Christmas time.
