    Ok, the pen trick did the job. I didn't sharpen all the way to the edge. Not enough angle. With the marker I can see what I'm doing. Thanks.

    I have a long story if you have the time. So I'm getting close to retirement age and I like knives. So I started a sharpening business part time hoping to get enough customers so I could afford to stop working my regular job, retire and still sharpen to afford life. Then I started seeing your videos and learning about shears. I couldn't afford a flat hone machine so I bought a TAS. I practiced , got them sharp enough to cut single ply wet or dry. No pulling, no folding. So I started taking business cards to salons. A coworker brought me 3 pair from his mom. I did them for free for feedback. She was really pleased. So today I was visiting salons handing out cards. Came across a stylist that wanted sharpening. She had a pair of Olivia Garden shears. She said she sent them to the company, and they came back worse. So I tried them on tissue , tips not cutting. Nothing appeared wrong in my inexperienced opinion. So I disassembled them inspected and cleaned. Edge was really slight, so I figured convex. I sharpened them, put them together and still not cutting every time at the tips. Used the pink stone a little, still no good. So now I'm starting to worry, my first paying customer and I can't complete the job. So I disassembled again and sharpened again. Still not cutting at the tips. So I tucked my tail and went back in to tell her that I could not get them to cut all the way to the tips. And told her that I could not accept payment. We'll She wouldn't take no for an answer so she gave me the payment and that made me feel even more defeated. So I came straight home ordered her a new pair and came to your videos. The reason I bought her a new pair, was because in trying to fix them I made a few mistakes, so I thought it was only right. So I'm not so confident right now and wondering if maybe I should stick to knife sharpening. But like they say if the horse throws you off, get back on. I know what mistakes I made, but still cannot figure out why the tips would not cut. I'm gonna ask if I can have them when the new ones are here. So I guess even at sixty couple you learn from your mistakes and keep moving forward. Love your videos and I've learned a lot from watching. Thanks.

      I'm 69 and still learning. If she gives them back to you, send them to me and I'll shoot a video on how I would fix them. I'm thinking it has to do with the inside rideline. How are you sharpening the inside?

    • @jefferydellinger7422

      After sitting and thinking, I'm pretty sure it was the ride line. I wasn't getting it all the way to the tips. I have been using the sanding cloth that came with the TAS. I just ordered awater stone .

      And it was my first time convexing so I was too worried about that and not paying attention to every other step. Thanks for responding.

    I sharpen lots of OG shears. They are easy,45 degrees and I have never had any alignment issues with this brand. I figured they were not sharp after they did not cut the dry tissue well. Thanks, that sharpener needs to go back to school!

    Why didn't you check the set and add a little to the tip if the ride was weak?

    • @BonikaShears
      @BonikaShears  2 роки тому

      I normally don't check the set if I know I'm not going to bend or hammer the shears and I know I'm not going to try to bend the shears if the customer is not there to ask permission. Working the ride on a flat stone will tell me pretty much what the set problem is.

    I tend to re-flatten my stone(s) a lot. However, since the inside face of the blades are always hollow ground, when I do the ride line, it always seems to remove metal on the spine edge as well. What am I doing wrong?

    • @BonikaShears
      @BonikaShears  Рік тому

      YES! The shears must be taken apart and the pressure placed over the pivot! If metal comes off the back you are creating a relaxed rideline and no amount of flattening your stone will fix it. After a few sharpenings these shears will not cut.

      Ok, thanks. I do take them apart and work from the pivot. I’m thinking about one pair that was adjusted way too tight and the “J” area seemed to be worn unevenly to where it wouldn’t lay flat on the stone.
      Being careful to relieve some pressure on the spine side, the ride line wouldn’t come even and ended up not making it to the tip.
      I’m wondering if it was dropped, bent, and wouldn’t cut till it was over-tightened.

    I dropped my shears and now the tip goes over the other what do I do? I can’t replace them I literally have no money and my teacher said I can’t continue the program without the sizzors and I can only use the ones purchased through the school so I need to fix them

      You will either need to replace the bumper (Do they clack when they close?) or you will need to bend the handle. I’ll try to shoot a short video on this today.

    I sharpened my home chineese shears with lighter and ceramic plate, yet the tip was not cutting, while watching u I also decided to bend just a bit of the tip with pliers and oh boy it works perfect now. it is not needed to be a sharpener or a pro. you guys just have to catch the right angle.

    Found the issue, Bonnie! They’re cheap $39 shears that shouldn’t even be worked on that extensively- I charge for a sharpening almost the same as just buying a new pair through their website!

    Where I come from that tool she has in her hand are called "SCISSORS" not GARDEN SHEARS-
    Nothing more frustrating than watching a video that does not relate to the title.
    Rec: Back to Basics- Learn the name of your tools first....

      In the USA all professional stylists are taught to call their hair cutting scissors “shears.” In other countries this may not be true. This is why our company is called Bonika Shears not Bonika Scissors because we sell tools that cut hair, not paper. I am aware in Britain and Australia shears are for sheep, hedges and goats. If I refer to a hairstylist tools as scissors here in the USA or Canada it implies she or he is using cheap scissors used for cutting paper not hair. They will be insulted. However, many of my videos and even my book on Amazon call them hair cutting scissors since so much of the world uses that term.
