This truck is as green as you can get. Repurposing or refurbishing old iron like this is environmentally responsible since it returns to service as 100% recycled. This one is far from crap it's a jewel.
i have owned many of these trucks and never had any troubles with them. very reliable and not bad on fuel either. like you say....just not fast. they should slogan these as the safest engine to have in your truck because it will keep you slow and steady.
I been I been flàtbeds n NYC n these r one of the first truck. I learned to do road side towing was was one of best trucks I ever have driven by far. Then the since I yellow in early years. Great trucks to have in the fleet.
That's a clean old truck. I'm looking forward to seeing what you do to it. I'm with you on the 2 speed rears. I have had several get stuck between gears. In the worst danged times and places too. Terry from South Carolina
You and me both, simple reliability. I drive a 1988 Chevrolet 6.2 4 speed c30 and a 1983 Mercedes 300D for that very reason. Old stuff is just more fun. Looking forward to following this truck build.
We're very happy with our 1985 van with 93 7.3 IDI, cross country, towing, for many years, with a 94 turbo version engine waiting in the wings. Can run vegetable oil too. C6 with traction lock and gear vendors.
Dear J.C. Smith 👍👌👏 Congrats! That's a great purchase for sure (and not only because I absolutely love nearly everything that is green). I guess too that the right/best thing to do is to lower the truck with the 19.5" wheels. But then it even runs less than 65mls per hour. But I guess you will use another rear axle/rear differential too. Wouldn't it be easier, less time consuming and more durable to put steel plates on the bed instead of wooden boards? As always: Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing. Best regards luck and health to all of you.
HINO IS BADASS! Ive been watching for a while now and just picked up 2000, 4700 with t444e. AND IM SO JELOUS OF THE IDI WE HAVE A 1 ton f350 with an Idi i actually just got a injection pump for. I hope some day i can do what you do with trucks.
Old is simple and most time cheaper too work on but also old means less money but usually better vehicle.... she's a butte and a little lipstick and she will do just fine....👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
It's always great listening to ya talk about being able to switch stuff around and your happier whith older stuff lol I'm the same way I love older stuff that needs work lol but I enjoyed the vid bud and I really like how the bed has only 2 hamdles to run it and I like how wen it gets to a certain point the thing locks and then it goes out lol it's cool but anyways great vid godbless and stay safe
Awesome man, I love the idi, had one in my 91 F350 and if it had been a stick I wouldn't of ever gotten rid of it. That thing should work great for you.
You've done it again. Another International has been brought into the fold. I rode in a Hino once. Roomy cab, good visibility, decent headroom, but I hated the ergonomics and the dash layout. I'll take the International any day. The engine sounds like the 6.9 litre that I have seen in older Fords before the T444E was introduced. Can't wait until you get it prettied up and put to work.
Nice truck..i personally think dayton wheels are the beat set up...i hate budd wheels..inner nuts often brake or come off with the outers..just a pita . I know this truck wont be loaded excessive...but daytons take more weight..most loggers prefer them . But hey..it's your toy not mine..so you do the voodoo that you do lol . Nice lil truck J.C. 👍
i agree with the heavy haul and daytons. however, everything i own is an investment and will likely be sold one day. my focus is on what works well and what is most desirable / profitable.
If it has the old Stanadyne water separator in it, they’re trouble. They have the spring plunger you pull up to open the valve pin off the seat. For some reason, they make the pin out of regular mild steel and since it is immersed in water - it rusts. Great design, guys. So the valve leaks, air gets in the fuel system and you ain’t going anywhere. Replace it with something newer if you have one of these turds in there. And definitely get some oak cut for the bed. See if you can get it kiln-dried too. That’s what I’d do. 👍
Just can't leave anything as is can you... But that is what makes it fun. Bet you were thinking about all the changes you would make on the drive home.
Inhad a 98 with a powerstroke in it that was a dog outta the hole with a auto trans but would run 70mph all day long on the highway amd then a had a 2001 with a 225 hp 466 with a auto trans and it would roll out and had plenty of pulling power. Very nice loaded out truck. And then i drove two different ones with 466's and standards transmissions and they were power houese but would only run about 62 mph. All were great trucks and the only major problem they all had in common was the kingpins went bad on every one of em. They are very hard on the kingpins.
This is only the second time I've ever seen one of them slide back rollbacks. The first was the other one you built lol. We had a Hino with a cargo king bed by Miller Industries. It's basically a hook lift equipment bed.
I like it. If it's safe and gets the job done and you're in it for a quarter of what the Hino costs it's a home run. I have a 79 L600 with a Jerr Dan 21ft roll off for farm use. Slow but sure it gets the job done.
it would slide on steel better but if i gouge the steel it is much more difficult to repair than a pice of rough sawn oak. plus, if i use steel, i will have to add as steel spacer to every crossmember to get it up to the height of the outside rails.
id almost take a 7.3 idi with a turbo over a 7.3 powerstroke. id pull that wood decking off and put some Dimond plate steel on it. probably wouldn't cost much more than good hardwood these days. id love to have a rollback like that.
I have a almost identical truck I was wondering what holmes winch was on it was trying to figure out what oil I should use couldn't find alot of info an only saw a fill plug an a Allen plug on bottom I believe is the drain but I was wondering how much oil it should have also I dough I should fill to the top
The bed looks older than the truck ? Looks like a Grove bed I had one very similar on a 7500 1975 gmc the IDI won’t win any races but reliable I have a 94 ford f450 360,000 very good truck
You should’ve just bought a rollback from Zane, he has about a hundred of them🤣. Seriously though it looks like a cool truck. The 7.3 idi is one of my favorite engines of all time. Looking forward to seeing what you’re gonna do to it.
i currently own 5. i just wanted a small one as opposed to the larger heavier ones. i do have a 19' bed sitting beside the shop. just no time to build it.
@@j.c.smithprojects Thankfully I have not. Really every one I’ve ever drove was trouble free. When I was very young and drove for my dad I sometimes hurried L to H and got in between but that was on me. Thanks for your response. Enjoy your videos
Ole 7.3 idi pretty good ole engine had a ton of them in buses ... those Hino trucks look pretty nice I haven’t looked under the hood tho. Do they have there own engines?
It’s crap!👎
its crap? i assume your rollback is better? lets see yours.

Pretty nice looking truck@@j.c.smithprojects
Good truck
That truck should be serviceable and last you a long time. Thanks JC!
Thats a nice bed! Much better design than the budget bed.
i think those locks are a fantastic design. i bought a bundle of trucks last night and it might change the plans for this one.....if it is still here.
Nice truck, that thing be on the road running while the newer trucks are being towed.
Nice truck, I've always preferred the older ones. Alot easier to work on and I think they are better built.
I have an 88 international wrecker with the 7.3 idi. Love the truck. Simple, reliable, will pull anything, just not in any hurry.
i have owned many of these trucks and never had any troubles with them. very reliable and not bad on fuel either. like you say....just not fast. they should slogan these as the safest engine to have in your truck because it will keep you slow and steady.

Mr JC I love the old Internationals. Thanks for sharing and stay safe
i am looking for another rollback. if you know of any, could you let me know?
Yes sir I will.
The reason you gravitate towards them is because in the end they are the most reliable and easy to work on.
That's a clean old truck. I'm looking forward to seeing what you do to it. I'm with you on the 2 speed rears. I have had several get stuck between gears. In the worst danged times and places too.

Looks like a fun truck to have!
Looks like a cool truck! Honest old truck. IDI and a 5 speed. My brother and I have a soft spot for the old idi's.
Great truck find bro
*What an absolute beauty of a binder J.C!* 😍👍 Talk about something all mechanical and reliable as can be! Can't wait to see what changes you make 🙂👍🔧
That looks like a good, solid old truck that has clearly been looked after...

Nice old school truck! JW would be proud! Ya won't have to worry about speeding tickets in it ! It will serve you well!
only thing missing is a uhaul air ride rear suspension! no, i sure wont be getting any tickets. 64 is about as far as i want to push it.
The good thing is you know what you are looking at and what it is worth. Have a good vision as to what a truck may be used for. $$$ Tom
Thanks for the lesson on Budd vs Daton wheels . I was checking out the stud pilot wheel nuts as I recently had an issue with an old F600.
Great video, love the old IDI 7.3...Banks and ATS make turbo kits for that engine. With you on the old Cornbinders!
Good old truck, it will work for your needs

Great looking truck, J.C. You know I like those Daytons, but it’ll look almost as good and be more useful on 19.5’s or lo-pro’s
Kool truck good luck

I have always liked Hino trucks. The older international with steel bed is much better for what you do
I love the truck looks good 🙂😎👌👍Michael U.K.

Oak decking would be solid. When dragging stuff on with the winch wouldn’t metal be a better option so it slides easier and doesn’t dig in.
it would slide on steel better but if i gouge the steel it is much more difficult to repair than a pice of rough sawn oak. plus, if i use steel, i will have to add as steel spacer to every crossmember to get it up to the height of the outside rails.
Hinos are great live good visibility great turning radius and almost all of them come with an exhaust brake
Looks a good unit. Hi Mrs JC.
Nice work truck!
Nice older truck.
Old iron just likes to work. All the wizardry on the new trucks seems to keep them hooked to a laptop.
Looking forward to seeing what you do to it to make it work for you.
well. maybe we should forget about that.
Ok
Nice find. I’ve been kinda thinking about one. But my buddy has one and is always available so maybe I’ll wait a bit
now my buddy has one.......
It fits you well
id almost take a 7.3 idi with a turbo over a 7.3 powerstroke. id pull that wood decking off and put some Dimond plate steel on it. probably wouldn't cost much more than good hardwood these days. id love to have a rollback like that.
hardwood is pretty reasonable for me. i have amish logging friends.
Apiton is what we use on our trailer and flatbed trucks for our fleet here in NYC and Brooklyn ,Queens and westchester
would love apitong.....just cant afford it!
If you replace the rear axle, go to air ride so that you can dump the bags.
its like you have seen me do that on another rollback build before...
@@j.c.smithprojects I only steal from the best.
I think you made a good deal here

If you ever change the fuel to give it more highway speed, I'd like to buy it, mine tops out at 57 not 64
Those 7.3 idi are tough old engines, I have 375,000 on the one in my Ford dually and it doesn't use any oil.
Kewl video

Use white oak if you can get it, its more rot resistant 👍
with a few coats of used 15w40 oil....white or red wont matter.
J.C. could you please post a link to the project where you converted the ford super duty 2wd to 4wd with the rail road donor truck? Thanks so much.
you can go to my home page and use the search box to find any videos you want to see.
That dt360 😍
That's just like my 3700, 7.3idi, 144,000. And Mines a 5 speed. Mine tops out at 57
Some low pro 19.5 tires at 32" tall.
Like it
I dunno about you on the state side but in Canada that wood deck would cost you about $15000 to replace these days 😩
Replace the wood deck, today that’s probably 10x what the truck cost new 😂
rough sawn from the amish crew i know wont be very much at all.
I'd love to change mine from daytons to bus wheels
Never heard anyone say they were not a fan of 2 speed rear end with a 5 speed transmission. I can’t think of a disadvantage.
you must not have experienced them getting stuck between high and low on a hill in traffic.....

Wood for bed 6X as much as rest of repairs/modifications combined... :)
Not when you are friends with an amish logging crew.
That “rollback” design is pretty wild. Is this bed commercially made? Seems like a really simple solution.
yes it appeared to be. i have seen similar beds but not owned one until this one.

yes....toyota.
can you put a remote control for the winch
Wassup JC
Nice truck. Are those lucas girling brakes?
no. i have only ever seen those on ford medium duty. these are just a hydra-boost with an electric motor as backup
Don't think of what you buy as junk. It's just " past prime pre-owned ".
I know where there is a 1957 needle nose Pete if you are interested, it needs completely redon
possibly. where is it located?
And the 4 horseman came .
You will soon have to find a replacement for this, it will easily find a buyer.
huh.......................................................know of any?
its not junk, its when they made stuff to be functional, to last, to work and not have a ton of electrical and nonsense.
There is absolutely nothing with old equipment I'm pretty old myself.
Jonathan W style!
White oak last longer
That's right Oak wood it's more reliable!
with several coats of used 15w40 engine oil.....white or red wont matter.
@@j.c.smithprojects that’s probably true, USS Constitution comes to mind when I think about white oak.
