I would like to relate my experience in buying this watch from Dan Henry. It was dead on arrival. I contacted the company at the weekend, knowing I would have to wait until Monday for a response. I got a reply same day, and was given a choice of taking the watch to a repair shop myself and being refunded the cost of the new battery, or sending it back to be repaired. I sent it back and they refunded the shipping and replaced the case because of an issue, as well as the battery. I was very impressed with this outstanding customer service.
The people commenting "oh, but it's just a quartz" don't belong within the watch community. It is this exact mentality that adds toxicity and feeds fuel to the watch snobs around the world. I spent $7K CAD on a brand new Rolex 116000 four weeks ago; just a a few days ago I spent $340 CAD to buy the Dan Henry 1964. To say that a watch is somehow not worth looking at because it's quartz is such nonsense. I buy watches that bring joy when on the wrist. I decide which brands to support based on their history, their vision, sometimes marketing, and overall what they represent in the community. Dan Henry is doing an incredible thing for watch collectors everywhere. Just wait until the company grows and capital continues to come through the door, he's got some big plans up his sleeve I bet. I'm willing to give him my money now to support his efforts.
I generally don't like quartz watches in general unless they put forth the effort to get a nice smooth sweep for their seconds hands, or forego a seconds hand entirely so that they don't immediately give away their nature. Otherwise, I don't bother and refuse to buy them; because, as another watch enthusiast is infamous for saying, "quartz watches dont have souls", but at the same time I won't diss anyone who legitimately enjoys them. On the bright side, at least they aren't digital watches... blech! But in regards to this watch, I feel like it's a bit inauthentic to make a line of vintage watches, especially chronographs, and then install them with a modern battery powered circuit movement that wouldn't have been used in the eras they are trying to invoke. At the very least, a hand wound movement would make more sense from that standpoint.
@@IaMaPh1991 Your theory of putting a hand wound movement goes against everything Dan Henry is trying to accomplish here though. The watch is, what, $300 USD? Install a hand wound movement and you're likely closer to $800-1000. I asked Dan about mechanical movements on his Instagram, if you think he'd use something like the ST1901, think twice. And sorry, "quartz watches don't have souls" makes you sound even more like a fool. Just because one person said it doesn't make it accurate.
@@mikec3454 If you like this watch and wish to buy it to enjoy it for yourself, then go ahead; I wholeheartedly encourage you to do so, as I would for anyone else who wishes to do the same. All collectors and collections are different and not everyone is going to go for the same things for various differing reasons. I simply will not buy this particular example, because it doesn't appeal to my personal sensibilities as a collector. Like they say, "don't like it, don't buy it", right? However, if another model is released that checks enough boxes for me, I'll consider throwing money at it.
I love the 1939. I’ve got the 1968 and I think it looks incredible (my friend said it looked like something out of Star Wars), and I’m saving for the 1964 Gran Turismo chrono in the future. Great to see one of my favorite watch UA-camrs do a video on the new version of the 1939!
I agree and would pay an extra $20 for a sapphire crystal. As for quartz, my preference. I am a stickler for accuracy. My collection consists of various quartz models, atomic, satellite, solar, etc. I am particularly fond of my Certina Chronometer and my Bulova Precisionist
As far as I can tell based on looking at the dial, I think this version of the 1939 offers only a telemeter and (spiral) tachymeter; the other version (first black dial, more recently a chocolate dial) does feature a pulsometer in addition to tel/tach
Was on vacation in the Philippines and I saw Dan Henry watch collection . I almost bought one . They are so beautiful . The dome glass on those watches .
Finally! a something unique and interesting watch that can really capture my attention all the way thru the review! It is a brilliant idea that Dan Henry came out with! Making a special watch thru the history of our lives, specially making them limited edition to the year in which the watch represents. In this 1939 watch, there are so many things are going on and surprisingly everything was put together quite well and even more amazingly they look retro & quite modern & hip!!! What a great job that Dan did. I understand that all of his watches are using Seiko or Miyota quarts movements which are not the luxury quarts brands, but proven and reliable ones. Also, it seems like he is not using sapphire glasses for his watches (probably to cut some cost for consumers) and that is also okay looking at the MSRP pricing. I am very impressed with the concept and how everything came out perfectly, mixing the history of the time yet making it relevant.... Great job Dan and great review Jody
Enjoyed your review! I actually ordered the 1939 black dial last week...stupid post office strike is holding up delivery, but I am very excited. The choice between the two was razor thin
These types of watches usually aren’t my thing but this is the first chronograph that I could see actually using. It a very attractive package too. I hadn’t really looked at Dan Henry for some time. Thanks for reminding me that they’re out there. I like their design aesthetic. Well done Jody.
Nice one Jody, 9 minutes, you must be near maximum fact-cramming-factor, all delivered without any sense of panic 👍. I've ordered the 1970 40mm orange, got spooked when I heard they were nearly sold out, maybe don't hang about, especially now that you've properly woken up your audience to the brand ;)
One of my Sekonda's is very very similar, having the blue hands and silvered dial and a 3 subdial Seiko quartz chrono movement which surprised the heck out of me seeing a Seiko movement in a lowly Sekonda. Does lack all the little ondial meters except the tachy on the outer ring. Even the case was kinda similar except the buttons which are bar type but the shape and slope of the case says to me someone at Sekonda HQ was quite impressed with the DH offering.
Hello great review as always. Nice to see you showing interest in the Dan Henry products line. One small mistake however, the pulsometer is on the black dial variant not on the silver. Dan is going to release a new model in NYC on November 2 : the 1972. This time they are going for a sapphire crystal. Your wish is granted. That was fast ! Best regards.
Mr. Musgrove, even after 2 years, you convinced me to buy this version (1939). I was actually considering the 1964 version (Gran Turismo Chronograph - "Panda") and changed my mind after this review. Love the dial and most of all how the blue hands pop out. Great review! Thanks again. and BTW, @Mike C - I'm with you; we should all buy a watch that brings us joy when we wear it 👊🏼🙂
I've been going back and forth between the black and white dials. The pulsometer is only on the black dial. Unique, if not particularly useful, complications. I already own the larger size orange 1970. What a cool and interesting watch. Pull the trigger, you won't be disappointed.
Nice review! A few weeks ago I bought a DH 1964 Gran Turismo Chronograph and it looks great. My second choice anyway was this interesting 1939 model. Honestly all DH's models are very beautiful pieces.
Hallo Jody, i did find a good and cheaper quartz Chrono from Guanqin. See for yourself model GQ001-GQ006. This has a real Sapphire crystal for no more than 17 Euro's. It is great! It is in my collection now. Loved the review by the way!
Hmmm quite nice if a little too busy for me. At least it won't cost chrono money for a service and you could argue that when the crystal has a few scratches and dings it will look even more vintage? Cracking review as ever sir.
Just one note of correction...take a closer look mate. That pouch is REAL leather and canvas, NOT faux pleather. I think the leather and canvas pouch is the perfect vintage feel to match the Dan Henry line. And it's quick and easier to use than the nicely buckled (faux leather) ones I have from Zelos. I actually have a Kirovskie military watch made in 1939 at the 1st Moscow watch factory. Pie pan dial 44mm round dial tiny 14mm lugs. Big Onion crown. I have it on an old Bund strap from West Germany! 18000bph movement which still keeps great time. I paid £70 for it. I didn't think they had mecaquartz in 1939. I pass on this.

***Man's watch on a lady's strap*** I just recv'd my Dan Henry 1964 and although it is a somewhat decent watch, it is small. The area exposed inside the lugs look not finished and is the hallmark of a cheaply made case. Then there's the strap! Appalling to the point I can't wear it without feeling I am wearing my wife's watch. The strap tappers too much to the point that it feels like a child's toy watch and looks very small. Not a great feeling wearing it on the wrist. Too expensive to ship back so...

It'll do mostly the same as sapphire crystal would. So unless you're fond of scratching diamonds across your watch you should be fine.

Hey man, another great review. Hope you are having a great holoday and are suitably blootered back here in glasgow.

Great video and review.
The hands look like they are chemically blued and not painted, you usually see this on the junction between the hands, if they were painted they wouldn't be able to make them even enough where they are fastened to the movement. The two most used processes today is blued by heat and chemically blued, and chemically blued the cheaper option as it doesn't take as much precision as heat treating. I have never been a fan on DH and even though the watch looks fine and runs a well know Miyota movement, with such a domed mineral crystal it is a scratch magnet. I think I would rather go for a Graf Zeppelin a brand with more heritage , fabulous fit and finish, on the 8674-4 I think it is, a two eye chrono, you have one of the coolest lume jobs on the market and you can choose between auto and quartz, of course quartz much cheaper than the auto. They use mineral crystal as well, but it can easily be swapped out for a sapphire crystal as it is compatible with some Seiko aftermarket sapphire crystals.

Great or not , Dude’s names on watches always reek of a 20$ fashion watch to me. Dan Henry , Jack Mason , Michael Kors, Donna Karan....see what I mean ?

The "party of 1939" cost my country 6 million people (20% of total population). Please, reconsider your titles; this one shows nothing more but bad taste.
