Millennial using period VHS equipment to make her films here, great video! I totally agree with your points on the digital "VHS" nonsense. Im guilty of it too, but im moving away from it as i acquire more period equipment. Ive got editing VCRs on the way right now actually. I love this stuff!

Finally! Someone who understands VHS recreation, I didn't want to spend hundreds of dollars to make a fake VHS video in professional software. I went out and bought an original camcorder from 1988 and 4 blank tapes for a total of 70 dollars.

Great video. I love the ease of use of vhs. I can just put it in an record tv and I physically own it. Also kids can't scratch it as easy like a dvd. Your right about the modern quality. To me its plenty good enough at dvd quality or 720p. I dont need to see the nose hairs of the local newscaster. It look so real it looks fake and kind of makes me dizzy.

Also VCR scan lines at 59.94Hz which you can get 59.94fps. The best way to capture VHS quality is at 480 vertical lines and 333 horizontal scan (480x333 resolution) at 29.97fps.
And after that you can convert it to 240p with or without scan-lines at 59.94fps for anything Live, Sports, and Video Games recordings.

4:10 Full sized VHS camcorders sold in absolutely tiny numbers here in the UK. Most people used Video8 or Hi8, a few people used VHSC, often because they were hoodwinked into it by a smooth talking salesperson. I've made VHS recordings for customers who wanted an authentic VHS look for some project. I even made a recording onto U-matic, one with a crease in it, to give a real tape crease look on the image which worked a treat.

My primary VHS player is a Panasonic AG 7650 SVHS player which works great with its built in TBC. I have that deck's video connected to a Sony DSR-40 DVCAM deck and the audio runs thru a sound mixer and then to the Sony deck. That deck acts as a pass thru connected via firewire to my iMac. I then use Adobe Premiere Pro's capture function to record the input. I've tried professional capture hardware, but I was never completely satisfied with the results - The video seemed pixelated and didn't look as good as the original tapes. It's a bit of a complex setup, but I think it best preserves the integrity of the original recordings.

I am digitizing a bunch of old VHS tapes right now, family recordings is the main reason, but on a lot of these tapes are television broadcasts dating from the late 80s to satellite tv to the early 00s. The tv broadcasts are very interesting, even just seeing simple things like navigating the guide on direct tv in the late 90s is really cool to see, so much nostalgia.
As for VHS in general, the more I learn about the technology the more I appreciate it, I appreciate it more now than I did as a kid. I have gotten into cassette tapes which are cool and underappreciated in their own right, but VHS is the king of magnetic tape, far more impressive than even open reel tape, even in their ability to produce sound (on hi-fi vhs). Sound wise hi-fi VHS player can basically produce a perfect duplicate of a digital source, I've tested it. Why weren't music tapes ever marketed? Not talking about live music, but just studio quality music. Anyone with a hi-fi vhs player had a hi-fidelity machine that even sounded better than the super expensive open reel machines, cd players didn't get that popular until the early to mid 90s when the cost went down. What a missed opportunity. And it goes without saying that producing a video signal on magnetic tape was a huge feat, and to make these sophisticated machines cheap enough for most people to afford one was another feat. I buy every blank VHS tape I can, they are treasures. Even been buying good VCRs when I come across them.

Not *entirely* true...about 16:9. Had a client's tape recently (in the US), VHS-C, that was shot in 16:9 letterbox. Obviously just black bars, not anamorphic or anything like that, but still...the camcorder did have a widescreen option. In Europe, towards the end of VHS's life (1990s), higher-end home VCRs did support true (anamorphic) widescreen, with a widescreen flag to trigger compatible TVs to switch to Wide mode.

I still use VHS Hi-Fi, recording no picture, only music. On top Panasonic machines, you had that function.
I still use it to record long FM radio music programes. Like weekly jazz shows. Surely they are also available as podcasts, but a fine tuned classic Sony ES rig, delivers more sound quality and I record that on VHS Hi-Fi.

What about outputting a 16:9 video from a digital camcorder directly into a VCR with composite cable? Will this cut the edges off, or will the image be squished into a 4:3 video. It can be "unsqueezed" afterwards so you have a true VHS recording in 16:9 widescreen, correct?

One of my main concerns about VHS is the possibility of the value of Tapes, VCRs, and Camcorders increasing in the future. I have been running my own channel shooting BMX videos on VHS for almost a year now, and have already gone through multiple tapes. If those things start to appreciate in value, well, things could start to get quite difficult for me.

While I agree it looks dumb to fake the VHS look with widescreen video, it's not completely unheard of. Once in a while I still record tv onto VHS, and when I do I record it in anamorphic widescreen (similar to a widescreen DVD, or the way widescreen analog video works on game councils). It's surprising how "VHS" it looks while watching it, even though the aspect ratio is more modern

I still do it in 2020. I had more than one opportunity to get a DVR free when I had satellite but never wanted one because I just always liked the VCR. After I got rid of the satellite and went to free OTA TV I thought those days were gone but I recently learned how I can do it using a converter box. I hope with the new 3.0 digital TV coming it won't ruin that but I will do it as long as I can. I don't do it a lot any more but I like to have the option if I want to watch something that is not on at a convenient time for me. It is especially nice if you want to keep a physical recording of something for a long time. I still have recordings I made back in the 90's. This just isn't an option with a DVR.

Hi, Using a TV-Top Antenna I can't use my VCR, to record a Digital TV signal. I can't get

Yes, you can. I did this with my dad's computer back in 2001. I used to run a composite cable and audio cables from the computer directly to a VCR and sell porno tapes comprised of 30 second video clips I downloaded off the internet at the time. I'd sell these tapes very subtly for $10 a piece in the lineup in the cafeteria at the Catholic high school I attended. Oh, those were the days! Oh yeah, I'd also mix in 80's music that I thought would fit the tone of the videos, mostly tracks from The Cars' Heartbeat City album.

Very interesting video! but Im not quite in agreement with the sentiment that analog devices will outlive digital ones, sure a lot of digital formats will become obsolete and be difficult to read in the future but also some digital formats and due the nature of such data sure will be recoverable many years later in the exact same quality as was when it was created. I have a 16 year old USB, it has been washed on a washing machine (forgot on one of my pants) and also exposed to magnetic fields and spent many months on the dashboard of hot car in the sun and still works, still has pictures and songs i stored there when i got it! so they can be very rugged also had other memories fail and get corrupted data but like anything some lasts others die.
