I really like Barrett’s take on this because I like origins more than odyssey even though I wasn’t a huge fan of origins I liked it a lot. I wanted a better origins not a bigger origins and that’s what odyssey got wrong for me. So now I’m actually excited to check out Valhalla at some point, thank you!
felt exactly the same. Odyssey was such a drag but Origins was refreshing at the time. But I really wish ubi hired some better writers because I haven't had a really good ubi story since AC2 or far cry 3 and its the reason i will continue picking up AC games on sale
I never had the levelling problem in odyssey, i felt like the world and side missions etc were so interesting I kinda just organically levelled enough as I did them alongside the story missions
Me neither, I wonder whether it's a problem reviewers came across while trying to mainline the game for their coverage. Just think that could have set the narrative from the get go!
@@boochtron I didn't say it was great, just that I never had a levelling problem. I enjoy pretty much all the AC games, but I'm not a huge fan of the direction since Origins - doesn't feel AC enough for me. Don't know why you felt the need to come out swinging...
This was a deep, excellent discussion! Barrett was especially insightful and helpful. As someone who liked Origins more than Odyssey too, I was persuaded to play this immediately.
Love Barretts takes in here and I'm not really a big assassins creed fan anymore, but he's so passionate about the shit he loves, its kinda convincing me to give this game a try.
The aspect they mentioned that each kingdom feels like it's own series kinda reminds me of how Dragon Quest games work. It makes me even more excited to play it.
I loved Odyssey! The combat and the 300 style battles were my jam! The side stories in Odyssey were amazing, I really enjoyed the legendary hunts and the Greek myths. I never felt it was a grind or slugged at any time.
I’m glad you brought Barrett on for this. I haven’t played every Assassin’s Creed game, I bought the last 3 and haven’t finished any of them because I’m sorta Ubisoft-fatigued, but Valhalla piqued my interest. I don’t think I’ll get it straight away as I’ll already have Miles Morales, Sackboy and Bugsnax when I get my PS5 next week (UK), but you’ve all sold me with your excitement so far.
Barrett's perspectives and opinions are always well thought out and genuine. Although I might not always agree, you can tell he legitimately thinks about his critiques and comes in prepared to avoid knee jerk reactions. He should definitely be on these shows more. Production aside, always value his contributions to the team.
I like the dark souls style loot system where it’s less weapons but they’re all individual and you level those up. I def prefer it because of how special it makes everything feel. It’s much more preferable to me than endless similar loot with different stats.
To Emrons point of not know if something will pay off, this was something I LOVED in Odyssey. There was lots of things that didn't pay off aside from a side quest ending a bit different or just nothing, but then there was things you didn't expect to matter. I had a decision I made effect me literally 70 hours later and it was amazing. I would have to spoil it to explain but it was my favorite moment of the game.
Turning on insta kill assassinations was the best way to play this game for me, stabbing someone in the head with my hidden blade should always kill them
I really liked odyssey but I feel like I’m going to side more with Barret on this one. All of the changes he mentions sound like the changes that I wished for. Very excited to jump into this game. Thanks guys! Keep effin that chicken
For the most part the changes are nice, but I agree with the sense that in some ways they went a little too far in the other direction. As mentioned, power level is still a big thing even if it's not called levels, and there are a few instances I've run into already where it would have been nice to have something of a heads up. Try not to spoil here but there's a mini-boss near a certain very early area that seems like you'll just get absolutely wrecked every single time unless you come back later.
I have no idea how he played through Odyssey and didn't fall behind in level. I had to go find optional stuff to do all the time to catch up to the main story levels.
I fell behind like once or twice, but in general I liked the side quests enough that I just did them anyway? I can see how some people wouldn't be into that though.
I've played through Odyssey three times with no boosts and always went up wayyy above level. After that second area where you are supposed to sail to the island where the vault is I just stop and do 1-2 of the areas you sail by (or do the full island you sail south of if you follow the natural path) and that is like 6-7 levels worth of content that keeps you above the curve pretty much the rest of the way. Its smooth brain Pepegas wanting to power through and skip all side content whining about level gating and the 'side content' in ACOD was never meant to be skipped.. it can just be done in any order instead.
Who else thinks it would be cool to have an AC game based on Al Muslim the Assassin Grand Master of the Assassins from the first game. It would be cool to see him come up and get more backstory about how and why he became who he was in the first game
I'm glad that they acknowledged the fact that Valhalla is made by the same team who made Origins. I like to think of this as more of a successor to Origins than Odyssey, which was made by a different team
So question: If the PS5 and then the series X picking up the same save across the 2 systems. How does it handle achievement vs trophy progress? If you unlock a trophy on PS5 when you load the save on Xbox does it then also unlock the corresponding achievement?
I think I agree with all of you on about 90% here. I really love Valhalla, bugs and crashes aside, of course, but there are things I miss about Odyssey, and I think you guys nailed just about every one. I like that you guys are one of the first to point out the whole "It'S nOt AsSaSsIn'S cReEd BeCaUsE tHeRe ArEn'T aSsAsSiNs" argument being dumb. Also, most people that have made that comparison say they like ACV as much or more than Black Flag, so I'm really hyped.

My main complaint is that I want more customisation with outfits and weapons like in odyssey, it makes the character feel more personalised. I cleared everything in the odyssey to the point I put in 200 hours into it and exploration felt worth it while in this I don't feel like I'm getting enough out of it in Valhalla.
