This guide is on point. I'm a newer Gengar main and I really appreciate the shared wisdom.

some things worth noting in part two:
his back A, shadow punch is handy in field phase against people who like to dash sideways or side y
latios/yveltal can be a good support for him since the latios can provide the extra pressure that gengar lacks with his projectiles
gengar's burst attack is unblockable, but avoidable in the air, so catch them as their landing, or sometimes right after you enter mega if theyre in reach
in dual phase, if you use hypnosis, it can lead to another grab or combos
playing as gengar, you'll want to keep constantly getting phase shifts to gain that synergy gague, another support could also be jirachi
i didnt want this to go for too much longer, hoped this helped. good luck to you with your playing and video making

+Andy mee thanks for the insight Andy. i didnt think about the phase shifting to gain synergy but I have noticed that Gengar excels when mega evolved and so Jirachi does give him the boost needed to get there early

With Gengar, it's super important to go for a lot of grabs. His grab leeches HP and Synergy, so it's good for denying your opponent their Burst. Hypnosis (forward A) true combos into grab. Also, his charged X move (when he flashes red) leeches HP and Synergy - and also comes out very fast which can catch out your opponent, and the final hit also phase shifts for bonus synergy. Additionally, your Curse (down A in duel phase) reduces your HP slightly - but boosts your Synergy regardless of whether you hit your opponent or not. So, if you're close to maxing your Synergy gauge, you can just use Curse a few times while your opponent isn't near you and max out your Synergy gauge (when you activate your Mega you will heal back the HP you just lost.)
Also, it's good to throw out a lot of Sludge Bombs from a safe distance - since it decreases your opponents attack power (increases your defense in turn.) You can even start charging up A while you're opponent is comboing you or during a support animation. Sludge bomb is also a counter move, you can jump and sludge bomb while in the air, and it's great tool for controlling the field.

I started playing Pokemon Tournament today, and as I was experimenting with the roster, I gave Gengar a shot. Oh my goodness, he's so awesome. He's a ghost. He's licking everything. He's CONSTANTLY laughing like a mad man at his opponent and mocking them basically all the time. And the way he reacts to the end-of-battle overlay is just hillarious :D
... but, as we see in the video, I once again managed to pick one of the weaker/situational characters on the roster as my favorite, as pretty much in any fighting game ever :(

Yep, we like the hard to play, awesome to those who seek potential, and underwhelming to the eyes of power or speedy characters. right?

There's one combo that Gengar can pull off, which is actually stated in his short list of basic combos. You have to land Hypnosis (Forward A) and then follow up with Y combination. The opponent is actually in a short vulnerable period right after Hypnosis, so any follow up can work, given that it doesn't take long for them to come out. This can actually work in Burst Mode where you go for Hypnosis first and then follow up with his Burst Attack, which guarantees a successful Burst Attack.

Just wanna leave a note here: Using Burst after Hypnosis will cause the Burst to deal less damage, but idk how the end damage compares to raw Burst. I know Zard's Seismic Toss into Burst Attack does more than raw Burst, but that is because Seismic Toss does a fuckton.

I'm a Genger main and I only use my synergy if I'm in a bad situation. I usually just spam Will-O-Wisp and Shadow Ball then i just combo off of it

Okay, I'm gonna be brief cuz there's a lot you said to soak in here and I can ramble on forever. I main Gengar and have since Day 0, before the game was out when I played it last year. I feel like although I know this is based on your personal subjective opinion, you didn't really make Gengar sound too appealing at all when he's the exact opposite of that. I know this is Part 1 but he is NOT solely reliant on his Mega though is surely is one of the top 3 in the game for multiple reasons. The main thing you mentioned was synergy gain dilemmas. Yes, this is half true because Gengar gets free synergy gain off 3 moves. The standard grab which phase shifts like every other character, his charged X attack (for a small amount) and when using Curse whether or not you hit the opponent for a lot while sacrificing some health. I came away from this personally feeling a very negative tone towards Gengar and it just is not the case. He is very fun to play and has a wide variety of combos/set ups.

I say this in the most positive way possible. I AM being a slight bit defensive because this is my main and I love him very much but I hope you get where I'm coming from. At the end of the day, I'm just trying to broaden the knowledge and expand the community. Go to www.pokkenarena.boards.net to sign up for free and get learning! If you've used SmashBoards, it's like the distant relative.

+icemagev2 Ah sorry for sounding negative. I personally enjoy this guy but I guess the way I said stuff had a negative tone so forgive me. As well im not the best gengar NA as Im having to learn everyone super quickly so I may at times over or under exaggerate things because my knowledge isnt that full at the time when I make a video on a character. Sorry for the negative vibes but truthfully I do like this guy and feel he is good, I watched the video and realized did make him sound too reliant on his mega, sorry bout that. I guess its because I love the mega so much that it makes me not appreciate regular gengar as much. Anyways thanks for your time :D

Your opinions match with mine. Gengar is my favorite Pokémon but in this game, he is really hard to play compared to the main series games. Like you said, he relies way too much on his Mega to win certain matchups and without it, it's really hard to win against Mewtwo, Pikachu, Lucario and Charizard who are good at long range as well as close range.

  • @CreativityMatters1

Do you know you can land Hypnosis into grab ?
Or even Hypnosis into his Burst ? Thats so easy and does too much demage ^^

    • @deltasage8228
      @deltasage8228 8 років тому +1

Even though Hypnosis into burst does lots of damage and is guaranteed, you'll have to land the hypnosis first, which is risky, especially against rush down characters who don't let you grab.
