there is actually a big thing in japan about getting "free houses". akiya or 空き家 are homes that have been abandon, and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) have been pushing renovation and reoccupation projects over demolishing and rebuilding as a cheaper solution for people to get into home ownership. 'Akiya Bank' holds a list of properties for sale at the national level, many of which are for 0 dollars. BUT just because you don't pay anything to BUY the land doesn't mean you won't pay anything. Pink Beetles will always leave a bad taste in my mind. I was on my way home one Sunday afternoon when traffic on the highway nearly stopped about 12 miles from home. Most folks patiently waited and we eventually found we were being routed off to a side road through a small town because of a horrific accident on the highway near home where 2 grandparents and their 2 small grandchildren were killed by an impaired driver who crosses through the median. There were distraught family members waiting with the Sheriff on the highway. As we patiently waited our turn (as we had been for over an hour), here comes a pink Beetle with 2 college girls in it thinking they were going to cut the line and get off the highway before the dozens of cars they had zipped past. But then the hero of the day, the Deputy who had been carefully helping merge 2 lanes of traffic and redirecting us as fairly as possible off the highway, stepped onto the shoulder and put his arm up to tell her to stop. She pulled right up to him, expecting to be put through. Instead, the Deputy put a foot up on her front bumper and kept directing the rest of us off the highway. She was still there when I lost view of that spot in my rear view mirror a few minutes later as the patient line was making its way into the small town for our turns at the 2 4-way stops we had to navigate before we could get back to highway speeds. My wish for that day is that the Deputy held her there until traffic cleared or until the accident was cleaned up on the highway, always with his boot on her stinking pink bumper. That's what pink Beetles will always be to me.

Disney content is best
