I remember having these occasionally when I was much younger (well over 50 years ago) and at that time I recall them being quite tasty & meaty. A few years ago I noticed them in the supermarket & they seemed amazingly cheap, I thought of my youthful good memories, and wondered if they could possibly taste any good for such a low price. It was tasty for sure, but mainly gravy with very little meat - being realistic that’s about all one can expect at such a price now. My trip down that particular memory lane is highly likely to remain a one time thing & I doubt I’d do a repeat, but I suppose if you’re on a very tight budget it might fit the bill.

I had several of these over the years.Surprisingly good. Last month I found one in a supermarket whilst in a self catering cottage so tried it for old times sake. It was just as I remembered them. Delicious. But do take the whole pie out of the tin, Use a fish slice or very broad bladed knife. So much nicer on a plate with some vegs.
I grew up on Fray Bentos Pies. Being a latch key kid, because both my parents worked, I had to learn some kitchen skills or starve and Fray Bentos Pies were a great place to start. I loved them. Quick, tasty and extremely good. I used to boil some frozen peas and have those with the pies. Next time I'm back in the UK, I shall make sure I run out and buy one.
I loved the Steak and Kidney as a younger person, and had them frequently. The taste was marvellous, the puff pastry crisp, and gravy tasty, and a very good amount of meat. I haven't seen them in years, but at a reasonable price I would buy them all the time.
I often resort to a Fray Bentos pie when I’m in a hurry or when I’m pushed for time. I’ve eaten these pies for years but only the meat ones. I have always enjoyed them, I’m glad you liked them too. Thanks for the review.
the clever thing about these is how easy and consistent it is to get the pasty cooked right - you really have to go out of your way to under or over cook the pastry

I used to have the minced beef and onion and the curry ones 😊. Would love to see your views on Pukka Pies - are they overpriced and overrated? Great channel btw. Interesting review. I’ve never heard of these but I live in the United States. I’ll have to check out Aldi to see if they carry them. The pastry crust seemed crunchy and nicely browned on top.
its very hard to get the pastry big and crispy without the under layers all snotty and wet.... ive taken the crust off.. scraped the gunky snotty layer out... then put crust back on... they are quite tasty and ok when you are in mood for them... handy in cupboard for emergency food back up...
I used to remove the pastry and cook it separately so that all the pastry had a chance to crisp otherwise sometimes the underneath was a bit too soggy. The filling I warmed in a saucepan and served both with instant mash and beans! Shame there isn't so much meat now but it's still tasty and excellent in the emergency store.
Hey, new subscriber. Really enjoyed this upload and have scrolled through your content and it seems I have a lot I would like to watch. Looking forward to more. 👍👍
One of the best "prepper foods" you can buy! Fray Bentos is actually a sea port in South America, where the majority of corned beef comes from. "Fray Bentos" means 'Friar Benedict' in English. Don't worry, you're unfamiliarity to these pies is strictly down to your age, I was bought up in the 1970s where these were a dinner time staple!! I've eaten one that's Been 3 years out of date and it was fine. I'll usually throw a baked potato in with one as the cook time is the same!
I'm stunned to see anybody praise the meat content in these pies. I had one last year - I was craving that nostalgia kick of my childhood and skint unemployed days - and I was absolutely disgusted by how few solid pieces there were: 2 tiny pieces of kidney and only 4 or 5 small pieces of chewy 'steak'. I swear they must include gravy as 'meat content'. Forget the photo on the tin: no product realistically represents the contents on the packaging, but the amount of meat in the photo is about the total I got inside the whole pie. Fortunately for me, I love the undercooked pastry, so it was saved from being a written complaint by that alone. Utterly deceptive & overpriced. For the same money you could buy the raw ingredients and make several better pies.
Cooked as recommended the pastry is soggy under the crisp surface but this can be solved by leaving them in the oven on a low setting (so as not to burn the crust) for another 20 minutes.
Not bad are they really?! I bought the beef and onion one today and its currently cooking away. On a BigClive video someone suggested when getting close to cooked take the crust off and let that finish separately on an oven proof dish. Apparently the pastry puffs up even more and the layers separate out more and get even crunchier. No idea if it works but I'm definitely trying that today 😁
We only get the steak & kidney one in Australia through ALDI, it was pretty ordinary, once you found the filling it was more a mince gravy than steak & I struggled to find any kidney, but as you said, it's a pie in a tin, good for rainy days.
My dad, much to mum's disgust( she was an excellent cook) loved these pies. He wrote to Fray Bentos to complain though. He said they weren't big enough .They sent him a box full of them .He chomped his way through them ,enjoying them all more for getting them free. The reason why the cheese and onion is rank is because of the flour they'll add to make the filling stretch.I wouldn't touch any of them .
I love pies, and have my own little pie making machine. Consequently, no complaints about the filling. With regards Fray Bentos pies, I remember them well. Haven't seen them around for a very long time. I was always wary biting into a meat pie, as I really do not like gristle, etc., but they were very tasty. Tinned pies are what they are. Convenient, but not really to be eaten on a regular basis.
Who'd have thought a video on Fray Bentos tinned pies would be on UA-cam. Ha! These tinned pies have been around forever, since I was a kid at least in the 60s, I absolutely love them, they're gorgeous. I've only ever had the steak and kidney one's though. I used to have one now and then as a kid. I still love them but I find they make work cooking them, they make a mess of the oven too much for me to bother with them now. I've also never eaten one from the tin, have always had them on a plate before. Getting them out of the tin when cooked and hot, is awkward for me also, so I don't bother with them, unfortunately. I was told of a guy my partner knew years ago, who tried to cook one of these without removing the lid, ooops! Bang!
My fav all time pie. I always keep 1 of these as a meal standby in my kitchen cupboard and the steak & kidney pie with such crusty pastry has never dissapointed me - delicious😅
I’ve been eating the Steak & KIdney pie for years and they are tasty! Firstly don’t assume your can opener will get into one as some fail. Over the years the contents have come down to mostly gravy and a lot of pastry, not much filling. It’s handy having one in the cupboard but hardly worth the trouble unless you are happy with gravy & pastry.
That's the best bit. Never liked kidney and the steak was questionable but the gravy and pastry were brilliant. Maybe Fray Bentos should just do a gravy one!
I agree the cheese and onion one is not much cop, however I do like my Fray Bentos pies - I have since I was a child. Good to see they are making a come back.
These pies are ok, surprised you didn't try the breakfast one! Don't know if they still do, the tins used to list recommended tin openers as they are notoriously difficult to open, mine's not listed (Joseph Joseph) but it opens them fine, yours was great too.
Had these as a kid all the time in the 70s. Then again as an adult in the 90s. Although the variety I had in the 90s was chicken and ham. One of those still in the tin some boiled pots and mixed veg, lovely. Oh, I knew how to live alright. I'm no longer single.🙄
Man I wish we had more British style meat pies in America. I love meat pies so much! Whenever I am in the UK, meat pies are pretty much all I eat. The closest I can get here in the States is Marie Callender's frozen beef pot pie which isn't quite the same. Chicken pot pie is a thing here, but is rather regional to the South and also not the same. People say British food is bad, but I say that is a stereotype. I love British food.
Fray Bentos is really well known. There good because they keep and there simple. Have it with some chips or rice with some frozen vegetables. Quick and easy to pick up on your way home.
My mum used to buy these. When the pie was finished she would wash the pie tin up and use it again to make Yorkshire puddings. Nothing got wasted in our house.
I bought one last Saturday in Tesco, Tiverton, Devon. Steak & Kidney, only about £2. Will rest in my cupboard for a few weeks before I open the can and cook it.
Good heavens!I've been eating thouse since the seventies !!!!we only had one flavour back then but the pastry never cooked good !still it makes me feel young !
I think you have cooked them to perfection. I have tried several times and my ones come out all soggy. A few mushy peas and chips, they are OK lunch time meal. Or with baked beans. But mine never turn out like yours did. Well done, nice video.
Thanks for giving us your review on Fray Bentos Pies. If I ever get a chance to live in the UK or Australia, I’ll remember to only try the Steak and Kidney and Just Chicken flavors.
Oooooh oooh ooooh.... and just for me (because Im coeliac) rate the major supermarkets for gluten free food ranges.... trust me... some are miles apart. Iceland dont even have a gluten free section. Tescos mainly cover sweet items, Im not sure about Sainsburys but Asda are pretty good usually. One thing which is missing from the market for people like me are cuppa soups etc... eventually I might start venturing a business myself on this because theres a huge gap in the market.
Glad you like them. I used to buy them in England, now I have lived in Thailand for 12 years & I recently came across a shop here that sells them which I am really pleased about. Steak & Kidney is my favourite
I am an ex pat living in Australia...aldi just had them on sale,so i grabbed 3 ...looking forward to having them soon...jeepers,who would of thought i would be looking forward to a little bit of England in a can!
They are well worth it. Good price and tasty too! Hope you enjoy. Didn't know Aldi was in Australia too, thought they were just in Europe. You learn something new everyday!
Fray Bentos pies were one of my staples for years. The best is undoubtedly Steak And Ale and in recent years they launched a chicken curry-type that's pretty damned good. They could be acquired cheaply for a long time, but eventually the elastic on the supermarket price point snapped and they got suddenly pricier. I had to ease up on these pies anyway as part of losing some weight - and now I walk past them longingly!
Eat these with mash spuds and tinned peas, they are delicious, in Australia these are $9.00 each they are made in SCOTLAND, I have been eating these for 50 years and my father ate them in WW2, we cannot get the chicken or the other one here, I wish we could I would eat them too....Yummmmmm!
That's a good idea. I might have to try them with mash and peas next time. Sounds delicious! I can just imagine mixing in the mash with the pie gravy. Mmmmm!
I buy steak and kidney regularly and I love them but I have noticed how much the meat has been reduced to almost nothing. I would be willing to pay more to have a better filling.
There have been quite a few comments on the amount of meat being reduced. I would have loved to have tried them with more meat in. They would have been even better!
Hi everyday eating they looked great 👍 I had the first to you did the chicken 🐔 and steak and kidney thy are great 👍 for a tin pie 🥧 thanks for showing me David 🙏🇬🇧❤️👨🏼🍳
I haven't had one of these in years, 80's maybe, my Dad loved them. I can't remember them being expensive back then and I'm surprised they are sill around, in Sydney they cost $9 AUD but you can only get the steak and kidney... plus they are made in Australia! They are delicious.... Thanks for the review.
Greetings from the Republic of Ireland. Lad, today I completed a 20km hike and I came across your fantastic video. You're giving me the 'munchies' big time!!!!!
When you were struggling to take the baking tray with the three tins on it out of the oven with one hand I was screaming at my computer NO WE DONT NEED TO SEE THIS PART JUST TAKE IT OUT WITH TWO HANDS glad you managed to avoid disaster and got them out of the oven fine
Bought two just steak pies and it was more like just gravy, literally two tiny bits of meat in one and three in the other. Pastry is still amazing but meat content is shocking now, years ago they had a good amount of filling.
I agree used to love these saw them again a few weeks ago thought I would try the beef and onion. What a disappointment the pastry was lovely but hardly any meat. The gravy tasted like gravy granules. I remember when the pies were packed with meat and the gravy tasted home made.
Love these pies, but yeah I was waiting for you to try the cheese and onion one because I don't like that one much either but the rest I've had are really nice, although I think there's a vegetable one which I haven't tried

I didn’t think of it till I was headed back to the US, but I could have bought a couple cases to bring back with me then.
Keep tins cleaned up to enhance your experience with pies instead of buying the same ones buy: - ready made rolled pastry -canned stewed steak in gravy -jar of Rich and Creamy Mushroom sauce +packet of cooked chicken strips or chargrilled one Use slice of pastry on bottom of can , fill it up and cover with another slice of pastry on top , bake it in your oven .You will be surprised how tasty it will be compared to bentos;

try in the air fryer for 20 minutes - impossible to get wrong
Thanks for giving us your review on Fray Bentos Pies. If I ever get a chance to live in the UK or Australia, I’ll remember to only try the Steak and Kidney and Just Chicken flavors.
No problem 😀 thanks for watching!
If you want to try them, you can order them off Amazon. They're more expensive, but not too bad for a treat every once in a while.
Thats a good bit of luck! Steak and Kidney is a good choice!
Luv these pies. Simple as.
@@everydayimeating3407 Aldi is in America too..don't think we have Aldi in Canada where I'm from :) thanks for the video ❤ peace
Oh so Aldi is more Global than i though lol Thanks for watching
Hi, I have found that Woolworths also sell them for around $9. 00 Sometimes they’re on sale for a couple of dollars cheaper.
They seem to be more expensive in Australia. I bought these for £2 each in the UK which I think is about 3/4 AUD
I remember having these pies 🥧 in the 70s when I was a kid it was cheap enough for a mid week meal with chips and beans but not had one in years
They're a good thing to have in the cupboard for a rainy day!
what a great review!. Fray Bentos pies from now on;;
Thanks for watching!
You can treat yourself once in a while 😀
Eat these with mash spuds and tinned peas, they are delicious, in Australia these are $9.00 each they are made in SCOTLAND, I have been eating these for 50 years and my father ate them in WW2, we cannot get the chicken or the other one here, I wish we could I would eat them too....Yummmmmm!
That's a good idea. I might have to try them with mash and peas next time. Sounds delicious! I can just imagine mixing in the mash with the pie gravy. Mmmmm!
The curry ones are my favourite.
I think I need to try out the curry ones next time and do a Fray Bentos curry night!
Where do you buy them from in Australia?
@@reecewoods1775 Aldi $7. Rip off.
Looks like an interesting channel. Subscribed. Thanks very much
Awesome! Thanks for watching!
First one i had i won at a fair . Theyre bloody awesome . If i could get ma hands on them now i would .
The sell them at most supermarkets
I buy steak and kidney regularly and I love them but I have noticed how much the meat has been reduced to almost nothing. I would be willing to pay more to have a better filling.
There have been quite a few comments on the amount of meat being reduced. I would have loved to have tried them with more meat in. They would have been even better!
A £1 in pound shop! Win win
I had zero filling in the last steak 1 I bought! 🤷♂️🤷♂️
@@everydayimeating3407 Back in the day they were amazing! Proper chunks of steak. Now they're incredibly disappointing & mostly gravy.
As someone who previously commented it's an accountants pie now
I find they have too little meat and too much gravy for my liking. The pastry is nice though!
Love the gravy
Used to be packed with meat and gravy, now its 70% gravy. Pastry is the best bit
I would buy just for the pastry.
These are great for a quick meal with a little mashed potato and petit pois.
Exactly! Good, cheap and tasty!
Hi everyday eating they looked great 👍 I had the first to you did the chicken 🐔 and steak and kidney thy are great 👍 for a tin pie 🥧 thanks for showing me David 🙏🇬🇧❤️👨🏼🍳
Thank you for watching! You're welcome. Glad you enjoyed
Meat pies made by bean counters.
We loved these, but have stopped buying them due to the gradual reduction in meat content.
I would rather pay more to actually have some meat in the pie.
You're right about that. Was disappointed last time I bought one - came nowhere near my memory of the pies that kept me alive way back when.
@@Jimmyredcab our Aga cooker cooks home made pies that are much better.
@@robhunt-watts8908 I am only a peasant so don’t own an AGA cooker.
They seem to be more expensive in Australia! They are only £2 in the UK which is about 3/4 AUD
I remember Mam getting these when I was young.I might check them out for how long they can be stored for emergency food 👍🏻
They are good to have in the cupboard for a rainy day! Quick and easy meal!
@@everydayimeating3407 Thanks 🙂I’ll get some 👍🏻
I'm from the US I would love to try these
Greetings from the Republic of Ireland. Lad, today I completed a 20km hike and I came across your fantastic video. You're giving me the 'munchies' big time!!!!!
Congrats on the 20km!
My kids loved those pies.
They're easy, quick and tasty!
Looks like you cooked them to perfection..
👨🍳
The minced beef & onion pie have to be my favourite comfort food.
They're a pretty convenient thing to have!
It was tricky and at one point I felt disaster coming but for a split second but I'm glad I got them out ok too lol
Good video, love a good pie maybe try pukka pie next.
Loved this video came up on my recommendations. I've got 10 of these in my prepper pantry Been eating these for many moons 😜
Thanks for watching! They're a great addition to any store cupboard for a quick and tasty meal!
Yes it popped up in mine too as I watch prepper videos. All I want to know is the date on the tin lol but yeah we had them as kids 👍🏻
@@janeburke147 dates are quite long I've got 12+ months on mine
@@markw1685 aww thought it might have been longer for some reason but worth getting a few in 👍🏻
Bought two just steak pies and it was more like just gravy, literally two tiny bits of meat in one and three in the other.
I used to buy these for my first husband 30 years ago, I used to like the pastry. They are not the same now. A lot less meat these days.
Love these pies, but yeah I was waiting for you to try the cheese and onion one because I don't like that one much either but the rest I've had are really nice, although I think there's a vegetable one which I haven't tried
Yeah the cheese and onion one wasn't for me but I think there are other ones I might try soon
@@everydayimeating3407 I need to try the all day breakfast one, but I've not seen it in the shops yet
You channel just popped up lovely down to earth video! Pies looked good n all! Being a northern lass I love my pies!
Thanks so much! 😊 Glad you enjoyed
Yes m,dear watching all your videos now!
Awesome! Thanks :) Hope you enjoy them too
Fray Benton has made versions of these pies for a very long time I'm in my 60s and can remember having them from about 8years of age pretty good if your on a low income yum xx

I had my sister bring me one back when she went on holiday to Ireland recently. It wasn't the meat or quality, just the taste of the Auld Sod I was wanting!
The FRAY BENYOS pie,s Are for me class with some good spud,s Butter and some nice green veg. Plus A good splash of our good old HP sauce...A Super Super...
Sounds great!
I used to buy the steak & kidney pie at the Safeway near our house in the Pacific Northwest, USA. That was in the 1970’s. Enjoyed them. Thanks for the video review. Not sure where to get them these days. Amazon, I suppose!
Tesco sells them in-store and online at £2 each.
@@ericlegge2884 After I wrote that note, I looked on Amazon and found several sources for them. (Guess I am back in business!) I was in the UK for a couple weeks in 2009 and noticed them at Tescos. I didn’t think of it till I was headed back to the US, but I could have bought a couple cases to bring back with me then.
Your home decorating skills are amazing
Thanks :)

Love fray bentos from my childhood I’m 60. A luxury item when you were a kid.
£1 in pound shop! Win win!
These were luxury items in 70’s
I’m off to Poundland for some tomorrow.
Nice! Hope you enjoy
It seems worth stocking up, I've always overlooked these tins. thank you! The best one?
I never had one, but I do have a tin in the cupboard, given by a friend, I must try it soon.
Let me know what you think when you try it?
@@everydayimeating3407 I have to delay it until our hot weather has changed. I am only eating cold food for now, maybe until next 2 weeks.
you have to clean the edges though use a paper towel after you cut the lid, there is paint etc sometimes get onto the pies, but lovely pies !
Thanks for the tip!
Those tins are great for making Yorkshire puddings in.
Keep tins cleaned up to enhance your experience with pies instead of buying the same ones buy:
- ready made rolled pastry
-canned stewed steak in gravy
-jar of Rich and Creamy Mushroom sauce +packet of cooked chicken strips or chargrilled one
Use slice of pastry on bottom of can , fill it up and cover with another slice of pastry on top , bake it in your oven .You will be surprised how tasty it will be compared to bentos;
