  • If you've seen one sizzle reel, you've seen a thousand. Almost every studio and agency produces a reel annually, but for Atlantic Re:think, the sizzle didn’t feel like the optimal way to represent our work in 2019.

Sizzles can show tones. And in unscripted, show who your talent would be. And have been paying my rent while our industry goes through streaming shambles 😗

This hits different for storytellers who need to connect with funders and other audiences about their projects. Most of the talking heads in this piece are in the for-profit space, even if they are creatives. We teach a different approach for people who need to showcase their work, and potential work, who haven't had the luxury of film school.

Having done a LOT of sizzle reels and I do mean a lot. Or highlight reels. The most effective ones show context. To do context you cannot show a 3 second clip unless it is from a Monty Python movie. You need to give the audience room and time to think about what you are showing. So if you're doing a film highlight reel for a director or actor, you need to start as early as possible given your time constraint and end as late as you can. You can't do three seconds in the King's Speech scene with "I have a voice!" You start with Rush saying "Everything all right let's get cracking" or you can start 28 seconds later "No training, no diploma ..." Another good in point is when ruch says "When the great war came" with the shot starting on Firth. If you really want to shorten things start 2:03 later when Firth says I vouched for you. But notice that the tighter you get the less context there is. The less power the scene has. And NO, absolutely not, you do not end at "I HAVE A VOICE!" because what Rush says afterwords locks the whole scene in place. ua-cam.com/video/7sE2RZrT9eY/v-deo.html

I'm a professional editor and I call BS on "15-20 sizzles in any given week" at 1:33. No editor is working on that many sizzle reels at a time, even if that was all you did at your job. I believe this is actually an actor playing an editor!

thats an average of 2-3 sizzle reels every single day, higher if he is taking two days off every week.

He could be doing the same set of 15-20 sizzles for more than 1 week. He didn't say he completes them all in that week.

Nothing worse than a sizzle reel than a terribly unfunny or dumb video about sizzle reels.

Yeah, it usually helps to have a sense of humor when watching these things.

You're watching a sizzle reel. It is a promotion for in-depth, long form content from the Atlantic. This entire channel is made of sizzle reels that point to the bigger stories at the Atlantic.
