_ I bought one of these portable typewriters (used) from Simpson's Department Store in London, Ontario, Canada in 1964. I used it for a few high school papers and then passed it on to my sister who eventually used this typewriter to write her Masters thesis in Psychology. After that there were repairs required and electric typwriters were on the rise.
_ In those days I had no special interest in keeping "antiques", neither did my mother care to see "junk" in her house, so the typewriter was disposed of in the local dump. But I still have my original Minolta SR-1 SLR camera (now an antique of sorts).
_ At the moment this body (76) is older than anything I possess,
_ I very much enjoy watching your fountain pen shows.

This video triggered fond old memories of my childhood. The sounds of the mechanical typewriter brought me back to when I would be falling asleep and the last sounds I would hear would be of my father typing his reports. What a timely video! My wife and I happened to stop by an antique store. I don't care a thing about decorating - that's her area, but I found an old black Esterbrook (Bell System Property) and a Remington Rand. I about lost my mind!
Granted, since my cycling accident I can't type well - due to 3 strokes, and TBI - but I STILL love them. I just am FORCED to think, type, and write SLOWER!!! Sure, it's frustrating, but exactly what I needed! The doctors in the hospital all encouraged me to WRITE and play piano and sing. 🤷‍♀

I had a manuel typewriter in 1986 for reports as Wordkprocessors were around but only just starting to come out. I just changed my keyboard for my Apple to a keyboard that keys are shaped like the keys on a Selectric electric typewriter that I learned to type on. Hi HJ! I NEARLY bought a Model P with Vogue, but the price was a bit too high for me. So I never got it. It was the later one like you have with the "dust covers" over the ribbon spools. Luckily for me, my earlier P (with the uncovered ribbon spools) has the original case, and it is not in bad shape. Still has the leather handle intact. It came from an attic in Maine, so it was well preserved. The draw band was broken, but I got in there and fixed it back to operational shape! I used HEAVY monofilament fishing line to replace that waxed string that was usual on the early portables. I redid at least two Remington portables that way as well. Old types are fun!

Hello Hemingway! I was curious to see why you said no one watched typewriter video. Made me remember my Dad’s big clunky typewriter. And I helped him type his resume on thick paper with large watermark. Ninth grade typing class with tiny typewriters…😅then we had an electric typewriter. But of course we already had an Apple computer in the 80s but I preferred to type out my reports on typewriter. This was us interesting video because once again you transport back us into a time where they had pens, pencils, paper and a typewriter. We should all be curious about the evolution of writing and handwriting. That’s why someone made a comment on why I still use a paper planner last month. And I said what do you do when you can’t access wifi at hospital when you need it? Or what do you do when their is a power outage? It does happen. You become powerless! I will never go 100% digital for planning. And I find it quite sad that people do not know how to communicate with each other anymore and rely too much on cell phone, texting, and email. There is something unique about that experience when you get happy mail and receive an envelope with a handwritten letter. My aunt who is almost 80 send me a birthday card and a Christmas card each year handwritten while others send the usual text greeting which I find impersonal but that’s just my own opinion. Now I this year I find a world of fountain pens and fancy inks and that motivates me to journal even if not everyday and to pen a special letter. My Mom made a comment a couple of weeks ago and said that I really write a lot. When I was younger my handwriting used to be super fancy and not to brag get compliments on it. But, it was only my Mom who could not never read my handwriting…lol! Now she just asks what are you writing about? And just comments on the length of my entry. Shortly, I should be receiving my first order of ink bottles (14) not big ones though so I am curious to see how long those will last me in my ink exploration. Now I may look for these typewriters to have in my future library. As you can see by now I am one of the ones who comments alot…I like to write! Thanks for this informative video!

Antique shops often offer typewriters at affordable prices, but remember that the affordable ones need cleaning or more serious repair - I have a local typewriter repair shop in my city, but I prefer paying $$ to a seller who has pre-performed the refurbishment/cleaning work. It was still necessary for me to learn basic cleaning and maintenance, but it’s a great experience to be able to type right away as soon as the machine is home.

There are other similar typefaces: Kabel, Gothic and Simplicitas.
The Simplicitas, found on certain Italian typewriters (e.g. Olivetti, Everest) have diacritics for typing in Italian and and French (and sometimes also with Spanish diacritics).

Somebody who knows that Wester Drumlins is in Newport, not London - I approve ☺♥
But you wouldn't have found Pablo Fanque's performance in Hull in the 1920s… unless he blinked of course.

Thanks so much for noticing my little references! Sometimes I am at a loss as to what to write so I go to the things that I am passionate about! It makes me happy when someone notices!

Hemingway. I’m a fun of yours. I enjoy your videos very much. I’m a retired bilingual assistant I learnt how to type in those mechanical typewriters. Also, I know you can help me with the ink in those ribbons. Y that is stopping me from buying one. Can you help us in that department?

Hello! Ribbons are super easy and replaceable. You can get them on eBay or Amazon for less than $10. Most are standard. Just search the name of the typewriter and ribbon and you’ll be fine. Thanks for the kind words about the Channel.

I'm one of the few who doesn't love Vogue. It's too bad they modified Ra 280 to make Vogue. I'll take Simplicitas or Elite Correspondence Gothic over Vogue any day of the week.

You are one of the few. Still, good few you. It’s good to know what you like and those other typefaces are much easier to find. Enjoy and Happy New Year.

@HemingwayJones And I'm even a sans serif guy! Simplicitas and especially Elite Correspondence Gothic are less common than Vogue. Vogue isn't especially rare compared to some typefaces, which isn't to say it's common, but maybe 20(?) Vogue machines show up each year. If you really want to talk rare typefaces, find an Old English machine!

Neat video, but you are way off on your pricing. Royal P Vogues go for over $2,000 - there is no way you are touching one for $700 unless the seller has no idea what they have. With internet info easily accessible, most sellers know exactly what they have. In addition, there are many less rare typewriters with asking prices over $600. As this video is only a year old at the time of my comment, not sure where you are getting your pricing info. What I am sure of is that people who watch this video and think they are going to find a Royal P Vogue for less than $700 are going to be very, very disappointed.

I have a dear friend who owns a typewriter shop and a rather famous one at that. Also, this is what they were selling for on eBay at the time. Selling, not listed. I haven’t revisited this lately, but you have a good chance of scoring one for much less at estate and boot sales. That’s the root I would go. I am glad you enjoyed this.
