    The problem with the promises the A's are making is they made them for years in Oakland. "IF we could just build the stadium at Howard Terminal then we will actually sign and retain players"... We waited for years for this to become a reality. Oakland A's fans rooted for this team thru thick and thin and right as we were about to realize our goal the A's emerged out of the pandemic pursuing parallel paths with promises of waived relocation fees from MLB owners. Now they're off to Sac while the city hopes the team falls into their laps if (when) the Vegas deal falls apart. It's sickening what has transpired here in the East Bay.

      The problem is the CITY never came up with the $700M they needed for "infrastructure" to make HT a reality. They got about 1/2 and have no plan other than pubic funding for the rest. What do you think the odds are that either the Oakland City Council or Oakland voters will vote for $350M in tax give aways for "John Fisher"? ZIP. That's what killed Howard Terminal and that's why the commissioner said Oakland had "no plan". He was right: They didn't.

      I did not keep up as much, but at one point it seemed like Oakland could care less if they stayed (roughly 5 years ago) and from what I gathered is why they started shifting to relocate... I'm not really disputing what you said about the owner, but to me, sounds like Oakland really didn't try to keep them there.

    My son is a young pitcher and we are involved in travel ball and all that entails.
    I taught him to throw at 80% to hit his spots and get the mechanics right and his mental approach.
    Like his dad he’s a lefty who has to be crafty and keep the ball down and hit his spots.
    My point is this phenomenon is always going to exist and I think it starts early on. My son doesn’t throw as hard as some but he doesn’t have to, the boys who throw hard and know it just throw they don’t pitch.
    All this isn’t new but I think it starts early and it’s a physical and mental thing that pitches encompasses.
    If you need TJ at 18 and been playing since you are 9 that’s a problem sorry for the rambling but I think people get it.

      @SeanConnoly 6 місяців тому +1

      @@frenchfrey65 absolutely I kind of showed him a modified version of a sinker/curve/change-up thingy where he doesn’t have to snap off its just a modified two seam grip offset with emphasis on the middle finger on release and besides being a lefty we just have the natural break and movement.
      I know I’m a baseball dad and he’s my son but when he’s on he’s poised and to see the right hand batters panic swing because it’s going to be a strike and then swinging over it or soft ground ball makes me proud.
      I have stepped back and let him become himself and intervene when necessary mostly on the mental aspect, like my dad used to say pitching is 90% mental, to my young mind it sounded crazy to me but how right he was.

    Breaking pitches have increased dramatically in MLB since 2015. That's a significant contributor to injuries. So are the hard, slick balls they use, which causes pitchers to grip harder when they throw. And then we have every pitch put on a radar gun so pitchers throw with 100% effort on every pitch to light up the gun. Before radar guns were prevalent we didn't have this many arm injuries because pitchers threw for results as opposed to hitting a high number on the gun.

    @terryfox9344 6 місяців тому

    So Greg, as I understand your latest thought, athletes (not students) will be employed by conferences, not universities? OK, there are literally hundreds of repercussions from that. The first would be that any employment contract would be between the player and the employer-conference. The athlete would be compensated by the employer-conference. I am guessing that there would need to be contracts between the employer-conference and the participating schools whereby the employees would be leased to the schools. Since the athlete-employees have no real connection with the schools other than the fact that they are owned by the conference and loaned to the school for a fee, there would be no real connection between the athletes and the schools' academic calendars, and no connection between the length of the employee contracts and such immaterial things as degrees. Therefore, if a conference wanted to grant an athlete a 10-year employment contract, and the agent of the employee negotiated for that contract, there would be no problem at all.
    You say, that this represents a big change. Greg, you are a grandmaster of understatement.

      It wasn’t a coincidence that Kansas City rrjrctef the tax extension that would have paid for the Royals new stadium and renovation of Arrowhead Stadium. Taxpayers are finally taking note of what is happening to Oakland and A’s fans and are saying “Hell No” to subsidizing wealthy owners and the public is realizing the threat of relocation is a hollow threat, as relocation is not easy and it is costly. Even with Nevada pitching in a $385M public subsidy and MLB waiving the telication fer and unanimously approving relocation, the Begad stadium is stuck and going nowhere fast because Fisher still had to come up with $1.1B+ to cover his share of the proposed stadium’s construction costs. There hasn’t been any announcement about obtaining that financing and even if Fisher gets $1.1B+ in financing, the annual debt service on that amount of debt will amount to over $100M anuslly, which is almost twice as much his team’s current payroll. So, even with a public subsidy, relocating to Vegas will require Fisher to leverage up in debt in an amount of the team’s current value. Anybody who believes that Fisher will increase team payroll to $170M while taking on debt that will add $100M in annual financing costs to the team’s finances is smoking dope. Relocation only is viable if a new city is dumb enough to gift a new stadium to the team and those days are over. In California, the Dodgers, Giants, Lakers & Kings (twice - The Forum & Staples Center), Warriors, Clippers, Rams and 2 MLS teams built their stadiums without a cent of public miney involved. In fact, the Rams & Clippers owners spent $5B & $2B, respectively, to build their new stadiums without asking the public to foot any of those costs. The threat of relocation is being thrown around so much that it is not being perceived as a real threat anymore.

    I cant believe that mlb and players dont understand how to avoid injuries and why theyre on the rise. Is for one thing and very simple. They do not train for withstanding more throws they only train for increasing velocity. Tell me which pitcher in the offseason goes all the way to 100-150 pitch bullpens? Nobody absolutely nobody. The only way to be prepared to throw 100 throws in the game is that in the offseason you slowly progress all the way to 100-150 throws. You might call me crazy to encourage offseason bullpens of 100-150 throws but its even crazier to think that 30 pitch bullpens will prepare you to throw 100 in the game. That is foolish nonsense. The arm doesnt know how many throws is doing it only knows stress. If youve only throwing 30 pitch bullpens and then increase it all of the sudden to 100 youre increasing more than double of what your body can handle. Now if you slowly progress in the offseason to 150 throws your body and arm are going to get use to that stress. But pitchers from today dont give their body the opportunity to get use to the stress. They think that fancy exercises or better mechanics will do it. Or they think that there is something else that will do the magic. It doesnt exist. The only thing you can do to prepare your body to throw 100 pitches in the game and remain healthy is that you slowly progress to those numbers of throws in the offseason. Period nothing else will do the job but that. Sometimes you only need logic and common sense to solve a problem. Its ironic that sometimes common sense is the least sense the human uses.

      There’s not going to be a top 10 payroll. And if they actually end up in Vegas, they’ll overstate their contribution to the ballpark and either cheap that out or find a way to shift costs to Nevada.
      Fisher moved to Vegas with the following in mind: (1) collect small market revenue from other owners, (2) continue to field cheap teams, and (3) market to away fans coming to Vegas instead of locals. I think (besides the institutional silence of baseball owners in general) the reason the other owners tolerate him is it gives them more wins. Not that anyone thinks that’s good long-term strategy.

When you hear how little money the city of Oakland and Fisher were negotiating with to create the Howard Terminal ballpark it makes you want to rip your hair out. Something around 90million dollars to secure the future in Oakland for decades.
    Vegas doesnt even really want the A's, A's fans boycott outside their own stadium, Fisher releases fake AI renderings of a ballpark, lies about it being a retractable dome, raised ticket prices without increasing payroll, and told everyone how cool it'll be to see Judge crack homers against his own team.
    As a casual A's fan following this clown show it has been nothing short of exhausting and embarrassing. Everyone deserves better than this guy, Oakland, Vegas, and fans of any organized sport anywhere in the world.

      Actually, he won't, and here's why.
      Along with the vote to allow the A's to move to Vegas, the other owners added a special clause in the agreement, which says that if he sells the team within certain amount of time, there will be a HEAVY tax that he will be hit with.
      Fisher isn't that smart, but he isn't that dumb either.

      Evidently, Baltimore management feels he is overrated as well, otherwise they would hold Holiday in the minors until he can't make a full year in the majors so they get another year before he is a free agent. If they think he is going to be a superstar, then you hold him in the minors for another two weeks.

    Oakland very recently had three legendary teams. Three. All gone, in a very short period of time. It’s not as if one of the teams up and split. Or even two. All three. Why is that? That seems to be the most important question to ask. But nobody asks it. Well, outside of me.

    Two things occurred in Sacramento, CA which were announced a day apart about a week ago. CaLPERS announced that a choice downtown property they had held for decades with over $50 million invested over that time was being sold to the Miwok Indian tribe of Shingle Springs for $17 million. The tribe has gambling and resort businesses in the state and stated they had acquired an ancestral property. The following day it was announced the A's were moving to Sacramento for the 2025 season with plans for a 3-5 year stay. Vivek Ranadive, the owner of the Sacramento Kings, has ties to the A's owner, John Fisher and owns the Giants Triple A affiliate Sacramento River Cats club. We'll see what happens in a couple of years, but don't be surprised if the the A's end up in Sacramento for much longer than their planned temporary stop. Huge downtown real estate deals coupled with major league relocation don't just happen. Thanks for the segment.

      A one block parcel is only big enough for a hotel and some condos so I’m not sure what you’re getting at? First Nations people can’t just open a casino / hotel in the central city. There was a casino hotel proposed by a tribe in West Sacramento back in the 90s that the West Sacramento City Council rejected.

      Sounds like you've never been to an a's game. There is no crime in the coliseum complex. It is like an isolated island. There is crime in the community around the stadium, but if you take bart or park in the lot, it is very safe. I've gone to games there for 25 years, and my experience is that it is very safe and family friendly. Ownership has let the condition of the stadium go to shit, but it isn't a dangerous, crime ridden environment. There is no connection to the community around it.
