- The Ethan Allen Express is a beautiful Amtrak train journey from Rutland Vermont down to New York's Penn Station. It's especially wonderful if, like me, you do the trip in the middle of autumn. Enjoy the lovely "fall" colours of orange, red and green as we ride the 5 hours and 30 minutes in Amtrak business class south to New York on this lovely train.
Check out my Europe by Train Bright Trip guide: www.brighttrip.com/europebytrain
This year I'll be taking more of the world's finest and most spectacular trains. VIA Rail's four-day epic "The Canadian", the Hiram Bingham up to Macchu Picchu in Peru, the glorious El Chepe in Mexico, Amtrak's Southwest Chief and even the iconic Blue Train will all come to your screens in 2022.

This train now runs all the way into Burlington Vt. The end is very scenic and runs right along the waterfront and along the bike trail.
Yes and the scheduled changed drastically.
Seeing your videos from this trip makes me so sorry we weren’t able to meet up. Next time! And so wonderful to see the Ethan Allen Express. Loved those fall colors!
Hope the two of you can do a collaboration next time !
If you do the newly extended Ethan Allen Express from Burlington, VT, reach out and we'll do lunch.
@japanesetrainandtravel6168 yeah Jeb Brooks and Paul Lucas are in my opinion the best trip reporters ever, I'd love to see a colab between them (and Suzane).
I am British and consider Amtrak one of the best reasons to visit the USA. I’ve travelled from NY to Miami, Chicago and across to LA in Amtraks sleeping compartments - a lot more expensive than flying but such great views and fun. Americans are some of the worlds most open and friendly people. Provided you are well insured it’s a great county to visit. Yeah - definitely more Amtrak vlogs Paul !!!
Amtrak is the best way to see America, leave the driving to someone else. Of course if you are in a hurry, fly. But then you are flying over America, not seeing it...
@@ronclark9724 From the air, you mostly see clouds.
Very nice video
Cheers, bud! 🍺
🥰 🥰 🥰 🥰 🥰
Thanks for spreading the gospel of Amtrak!
History lesson from a local! Albany used to have its own rail station named, imaginatively, Union Station. However when I-787 was built, they built over the tracks and moved the station to its current location. The old building was barely better than a shed. The current, much nicer, building opened in 2002.
Correct. it was probably the last thing that Penn Central could afford before it crashed and burned.
I have been to both of "Albany" stations and the newer one is much nicer. They are both actually in Rensselaer county
The opposite experience of Rutland, which had a gorgeous old station, that was torn down in the 1950. The new one is… serviceable.
Passes Fort Edward: "This part of the world is full of tricky to pronounce names."
Seriously, this might be the prettiest of Amtrak's Eastern routes. I've had the good fortune to take it twice, both times for business (hence also in business class) and both times in autumn. The views, especially along the Hudson, are spectacular. It truly shouldn't take longer to train this route than drive it, but you do get the benefit of those views. With wi-fi, you're also able to work and stay productive.
Bless you for liking and supporting Amtrak!
New York was previously the Dutch colony of the New Netherlands. That's how it ended up with place names like Schenectady, Harlem, the Bronx, etc.
Schenectady comes from a Mohawk word, but yes, lots of Dutch names in the New York area.
Brooklyn too
Nothing better than a cup of coffee and a Paul Lucas video on a Sunday morning. Thanks mate!
That ride up or down the Hudson between NYC and Albany is beautiful any time of the year. (There’s also Bear Mountain, Bannerman’s Castle/Island (interesting history, sadly falling apart)).
I remember travelling over to the States and my wife bought, for my birthday, a stay in New York.
We travelled from Harrisburg to Penn Station.
It took forever but it was probably the best train journey I’ve ever taken.
I appreciate that you absolutely nailed the pronounciation of Schenectedy and Poughkeepsie.
I've stood next to the Amtrak train at Rutland (the old building, like a shed) in 2002. I was part of a International group from South Africa working at the Killington Ski Resort. After hours I did dish washing at the Palms Italian Restaurant. The Amtrak train was especially special to me due to my work history at Spoornet South Africa (South African Railways and Harbours). From a porter during school holidays to Assitant Manager Operating. A career of 23 years. Miss you guys. Enjoy and take care of your Rail network and your country. God bless.
Used to live around Poughkeepsie, using the Metro-North was my preferred way to get down to NYC, the views of the Hudson are incredible any time of year!
I'm in Brewster only about 45 minutes from Poughkeepsie and I take Metro-North down to the city all the time on the Harlem Line!
Grew up in Kingston, we use to drive down to Poughkeepsie to catch metro north for trips into NYC. Cheaper than Amtrak
I started watching your videos during quarantine, taking vicarious trips while I couldn't physically go anywhere. As a lifelong Vermonter, it's so fun to know you were in my backyard.
I was the one who took that Timelapse of the nyc trail hall that you used at the start of the video, thanks for buying my footage
Great report. It's nice to hear some good things about Amtrak. Perhaps the growth in metro and regional rail services will help its growth. In the Northeast, the major problem is that many of the routes were surveyed and laid out in the 1830s and 40 and designed for speeds
I think they need to manage expectations for people to have a positive review of Amtrak. Its best for sightseeing than anything else (some of America's best views are only accessible on the rails), but speed improvements for journeys to be under 5 hours (the limit that city center to center is competitive to a short haul flight), make sense.
@@stevenroshni1228 No matter how fast a high speed train is, if it can't get there before the sweet spot of 3 hours, even that high speed train of 200 MPH will lose the economic battle with the airlines. America is a large nation, not a TINY nation like Japan, France, or Germany. I beg to differ, 3 hours, not 5 hours...
We really need to stop saying that European nations are tiny and the USA is huge therefore USA doesn't need trains.
Even in densely populated cities, the railway infrastructure is terrible. I mean, really, one train per day for a 5 hour ride with an average speed of 40MPH? Come on, there is better service in Europe to towns with less than 3000 inhabitants (Mele, Genoa, Italy is home to 2700 and has hourly train services plus bus) than in the USA for cities larger than 1 million.
@@ronclark9724 Tiny nations of Japan and France lol.
Amtrak is overpriced, slow and frequently late; but it's still the most romantic way to get around the USA. I love it.
I hope we American's can continue to support Amtrak and make it more popular and great to use.
Albany is also the engine change point on some of the other trains that continue on.
The P32 is dedicated to service in and out of Penn station as it’s Amtrak’s only dual mode locomotive, so they don’t want them venturing far, though they will sometimes go as far as Toronto on the jointly operated with Via Rail “Maple Leaf”.
The 700-series P32s run on the Empire Service to Buffalo and Niagara Falls. Though some Empire Service trains are New York to Albany-Rensselaer. Unfortunately, the Maple Leaf hasn't been running to Toronto during the pandemic.
Welcome to Vermont! Hope you come back when the Ethan Allen is extended in the summer and also ride the Vermonter, another beautiful ride
Thank for your praise and super for Amtrak. It is refreshing to have positive feedback. Again, thanks!
I lived in New England as a child (where my mother was born and raised) and it is so beautiful in the fall. Thank you for taking the train through the beautiful countryside!
Without a doubt, the EA is the best Amtrak train & route! ❤
I have been debating fly vs drive vs train to visit my sister in Manhattan from central Vermont. Your video has me excited to try the train - first rail adventure! Seeing the cars, seats, and differences between Coach & Business very helpful. Thanks for the great video!
(P.S. FYI New England = 6 states: CT, MA, ME, NH, RI, VT - NY excluded)
A great train ride, and long enough for me! Beautiful scenery 🌞
Well done, Paul.
I probably would have mentioned that Schenectady (your pronunciation was spot on) was the home of ALCO, and that the portion of the trip along the Hudson River was New York Central's "Water Level Route".
It's a shame train travel isn't more popular the US... some of the scenery their trains pass through looks wonderful.
Dinah Shore sold a lot of Chevys... Americans in a hurry fly, and those too cheap to ride Amtrak drive their cars. Outside a few of the larger cities, Americans almost have to have a car to get around. Greyhound and Megabus do not stop at so many rural locations anymore...
Update, anyone interested. The EA Express will be extended to Burlington on July 29th with the first Official train being the morning SB to NYP. Ticket sales to come
You should do the Downeaster to Brunswick, Maine from Boston. It’s best done during peak foliage, but I ride it all the time to get back and forth between home and university.
Love the Amtrak and train videos, keep them up!
I loved this! I used to take Amtrak from Montreal to New York City before the border closed due to covid. It’s an amazing trip with Lake Champlain to the east when heading down, and the Hudson River to the west. The downside was that the journey could take 10+ hours, with about 2 hours spent at the border (something that could be avoided by having immigration pre screening in Montreal as is done at the airport for travel to the US ). It’s hard to justify that length of a journey (a flight takes 1 1/2 hours) and there is the inconvenience of arriving in NYC at night. But the day on the train is amazing!
You were lucky with wifi as I found it doesn’t work until you reach Albany.
5:05 Isn’t that foot lever for spinning the seat to face in the opposite direction? To be able to chat with a friend etc.? Trains are great, aren’t they? Cheers!
Surprising someone in the bathroom with the video camera in hand must have been rich lol. Paul's next trip: the bus ride to prison. Great video as always! Hope you're back in the States again soon.
I am so amazingly psyched to see this video. I really like your channel, and I'm a New Hampshire native. Big Amtrak fan. I like your videos, rapidly getting into British rail as my new niche of interest.
Fantastic video. As you guys would say, brilliant.
Hi Paul, thanks for bringing back some great memories from when I was in my early 20’s. I took a trip to the States and Canada which ended up on an Amtrak train from Montreal to New York, the Adirondack Express I think it was called. It ran through Albany and down the Hudson, it was a journey I will never forget. In September the colours were amazing! The other reason I won’t forget it was the scheduled journey time took nearly four hours longer as freight trains took priority. Running through JFK to catch the flight home wasn’t fun after a full day on the train!
You have inspired us recently and will hopefully be doing coast to coast on Amtrak in September this year New York to San Francisco, for my sixtieth birthday, I can’t wait!
Cheers Paul, John
I absolutely adore your railway videos, living in Australia my options are both limited and expensive so seeing your content always makes my day :)
At least you have some options in AU, over here in NZ, we have three tourist trains between AKL-WLG, CHC-Picton & CHC-Greymouth. And that's about all for intercity trains
Ditto for central South Carolina
This was a beautiful short trip! I would also go for business class for the little extra $ There’s nothing like the train! It’s exciting for me every time I ride. Hopefully your train vlogs will encourage others to ride
Hopefully for those who have never taken the train before will be AMAZED how much fun it is!!!! Yes please…, more train vlogs Paul!!
Thanks for the ride
Bye for now
Kathy
Washington State 🇺🇸👋🏻
Woo hoo!! Paul passing through what is currently my neck of the woods. I live about 45 minutes from the Schenectady train station (yes, you pronounced it correctly), and have used that station a lot, especially when my hubby or I were weekend commuting from New York City. We've taken the Ethan Allen Express often!!
We are friends with the station manager at Schenectady. I know the station so well, that I even recognize the backs of the buildings near the station.
Enjoy train travel in the United States but nothing beats Euro train travel. Thanks for another great trip.
Native Rutlander here! The track between Rutland and Whitehall is an absolute disgrace. I could run faster than the train for the first 1.5 hours of the trip. Also, the Ethan Allen is set to be extended to Burlington via Middlebury later this year, with possible service to Montreal (!) in the not so distant future. Excellent video!
Thanks for the video . I lived in the Rutland area in the 1980s. It was good seeing my old stomping grounds.
I took Amtrak recently for a one day trip to Lake George via Albany and I enjoyed my experience on the train, especially the scenery of a frozen Hudson River. In fact, I live close to a commuter rail stop so I started my journey there and connected at Penn Station to head up to Albany and back. I would do it again.
Paul, Thanks for a great video that could be used as an ad for the Ethan Allen Express. You will have to come back in this summer, hopefully July 2022, when the Ethan Allen Express will be extended 70 miles from Rutland north to Burlington, Vermont, bringing passenger rail back from Rutland to Burlington for the first time in 69 years (1953)!
I just love to watch train video's, traveling through foreign countries. Thanks for the upload Paul!👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
I take the Ethan Allan Express (NY to VT) almost every season to visit my GF. It's a really great ride and beautiful scenery to boot. The only drawback its a once a day service.
At the beginning of the video when you said the name I started laughing thinking about people thinking it was named after a furniture store. 😄
It was the first Google result when I tried to find out who he was!
@@Paul_Lucas 😄
Don't be so quick to criticize Amtrak rolling stock. The GE P-series locomotives have served admirably for 30 years. That equals the service given by the EMD E-series and F-series locomotives. Fantastic! As for the Amfleet coaches, they were designed and built by the Budd Company not long before Budd left the railcar business. Even the new Viewliner IIs were designed by Budd, even though they are being built by other companies. There's quite a bit of railroad history in this rolling stock, and we Americans love them! As for going an average speed of 45 mph along the water-level route, don't be critical. It's a wonderful place to take in beautiful views. It's impossible to enjoy views when you're flying along at 195 mph on Eurorail. Besides, the water-level route is where Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint dined aboard the New York Central's 20th Century Limited in the movie "North by Northwest." Still more railroad history. No. Let me slow mosey through the Hudson Valley, where I have friends, and through Glenwood Canyon, where I can study the cantilever design of I-70. Ooh rah!
Loving the retro British Midland face mask 👌
Love your love of Amtrak and can’t wait to see which other routes you cover. Thanks for sharing this trip!
Schenectady NY, was the home of American Locomotive Company.
Only been on Amtrak once before with a return from Washington to New York which I thoroughly enjoyed. Will certainly do more rides now that travelling is easier. 👍
Brings back fond memories from a business trip to Poughkeepsie (big IBM lab there, mid 90s). Managed to arrive on a Sunday with the Monday being a US holiday, so trained it into NYC. Lovely trip, great video, keep it up, Paul.
November in Vermont. It's almost "Stick" season in this video. That's what they call it when the shriveled leaves fall to the ground but before the first snow. I've done the Ethan Allen a few times and loved it.
Love Amtrak! Hope
To take this train some
Day to visit my sister in Vermont.
The Adirondack once it's back in service is also a great choice for sightseeing during the fall with all the lakes. (Being 11 hours it's much slower than driving 6.5 hours or the bus 8.5 hours).
Bring on the the train travel vids Paul ! I always enjoy them and the airline ones too!
Paul, I agree with you, as I love Amtrak too!
Great video as always, and I'm not just saying that 'cause you featured my reply to your tweet! Though that was a very cool surprise, so thank you!
I've been wanting to ride the Ethan Allen Express for a while, having done four of the other major Amtrak long distance routes over the last year. I, too, love Amtrak despite the datedness of the cars. There's something special about these routes that you just can't get from car or plane. It really is the views, the crews and the very pleasant snooze!
The northeast is the only part of america where Amtrak is a legit option. This train is pretty good and almost car speeds is good for amtrak. This train is going to be extended up to Burlington pretty soon. The long term goal after that happens is to go twice daily
To state the obvious train trips are much more engrossing as you see the country and get a smattering of history and geographic detail. No hassle and time wasted unlike flying where ,after the food has been reviewed before and after boarding, the seat accessories and washrooms have been considered there's not much left except to appraise cabin crew and cleanliness.
Very enjoyable, look forward to more rail videos.
It’s been quite a while since I have been on an Amtrak train. I have never traveled in business class. What I like about the train is that you can easily walk from one passenger car to another. I do like it when the train approaches the station and the conductor opens the door as the train is about to pull into the station.
FINALLY!!! Some railway content… thx Paul !! 🙏💯
I was glad to see you were in VT I WANT TO TAKE AMTRAK WITH MY DAUGHTER INLAW SHE IN A WHEEL CHAIR THE AISLE LOOK WIDE ENOUGH FOR HER CHAIR THANK YOU AGAIN I LOVE YOU VIDEOS INEZ FROM VT
Americans are friendly! "Have a nice day." (I'm an American living in the UK).
Great video !!
Thanks for making my day Paul :)
If you travel earlier in the fall, you will see brilliant colors in September and October. I thoroughly enjoyed the video. Thanks!
number one at the gate, yours are the most enjoyable videos
Cheers!
Great trip report!! Thank you Paul😀😀
Thanks Paul. I do love the rail content. JDS in AZ usa
Beautiful scenery. I love autumnal colours.
You should see it in October.
Love the train trips you do! You should do the Downeaster in the fall and do a tour of Salem, MA in October - it's really fun and amazing scenary!
Hi Paul, Good to see your video after a while, glad you posted your Amtrak experience. I did recently travel by Amtrak, from Washington DC to Metropark, New Jersey station. Unfortunately Amtrak still stuck with one of the oldest coaches almost 40 to 50 years old Unlike Europe and England who have already replaced their old coaches and modernized. US is far behind in the public transport still, mostly dominated by aviation industry. We are really looking forward to a much improved modern railway system here in US as well. Look foward to more of your train content in 2022. Cheers
Beautiful Mate.
Thanks for the video 👍
Great video! Sometime later this year - supposedly - Amtrak will extend the Ethan Allen Express to Burlington, then offering two services between NYC and Burlington, the other being the Vermonter. Now that would be a nice trip - take the Ethan Allen in one direction, and the Vermonter in the other.
I guess Essex Junction is close enough to called "Burlington", but it will be nice to finally have proper service to Burlington Station. I didn't know that was actually coming to fruition. I was looking forward to it for 20+ years but now I live in CA. I assume they will be stopping in Middlebury and Shelburne?
@@1jamarks it will stop in middlebury and vergennes then burlington. They decided to skip shelburne to save time and not have too many stops. Supposed to be working by end of 2022. The amtrak signs are up at the stations
Brilliant - Thanks Paul . its on mu bucket list
Very enjoyable Thank You Paul
What you are probably unaware of is that Amtrak has with Siemens a substantial order of new cars, about 83 sets which translates to over 600 individual cars. These are based on the Railjet cars in Austria.
These Amfleet I coaches will soon be replaced with Siemens coaches similar to Brightline's and with new Siemens diesel/third rail locomotives as well. Unfortunately the Amfleet II coaches have to soldier on the east coast overnight sleeper Viewliner trains...
Thank you Paul; especially love your train travel videos🌞
Paul, thanks for posting another great video. They always brighten my day. And thanks for being an advocate for Amtrak. I do wish that more people would ride trains, especially since flying can be a real pain nowadays what with unruly passengers, etc. Anyway, look forward to more rail reports this year from you. Cheers!
Thank you for this! I live in Los Angeles and love Amtrak (big Coast Starlight fans!). I've just started looking at a trip to upstate NY to do a canal boat holiday on the Erie Canal and am now going to see if we can add this trip into the mix! Why not travel from NYC via Ethan Allen to Albany or a little further and then get on the canal from there!? So excited! Thank you for giving me this inspiration!
Two things- if you were planning this I’d recommend taking the Empire Service to Albany (same route from NYC to Albany plus it runs more frequently), and if you want to get on the Erie Canal you really don’t want to go further than Albany because the locks to enter are in the Troy/Waterford area which are only 10-15 minutes North of the train station by car.
Thanks for the video, love the train ones the most, keep em coming😀
More train videos to come, cool can't wait.
Unless I have a very short timeframe, I always take the train [or a ship if crossing the ocean]. I've always loved trains and being retired with plenty of available time, I definitely prefer it.
The only thing that limits my travel time is weather in the northern states. Otherwise - year-around would be great.
Thanks for any train videos, especially the scenic Amtrak ones. The ones they are trying to restart up next month connecting with Canada are great - Albany to Montreal in the autumn through the Adirondacks. 👍 👍
I had saw this line when I was looking up the station stop near my house and had never heard of it before 😂.
Great vid. Thanks Paul 👍
Such a nice soothing video
Such a scenic route. Very nice.
Thank you for another great video Paul. I haven’t been upstate in so long and the scenery is absolutely gorgeous to look at while riding the train. Keep doing more Amtrak when you are able to. Cheers!
Believe me, those Metroliner coaches and cafe car that you were in were in pretty good shape as compared to some of the other cars in the Northeast fleet.
The scenery looked lovely. Thank you for the video! Have an amazing week!
Born in Poughkeepsie. Love the trains
Great video !
The Scenery is really the crown jewel of this trip !
Excellent video again. The stunning scenery definitely benefits from the slower train journey. Looking forward to the next one.
The Hudson Valley is where i'm from it's very pretty in the fall!
I really enjoy your train videos and I'm looking forward to viewing all the ones you have planned this year.
Loved this video...
Great video once again. I have ridden both VIA Rail and Amtrak and have found the seats on Amtrak to be more comfortable. With the investment that Amtrak is getting, hopefully train speeds and frequency will increase on routes like this. Ps the Run along the Hudson is spectacular!
Love the train travel videos! The northeastern states are beautiful so going by train gives you the opportunity to relax and enjoy the scenery! I've driven with some friends from Montreal, Quebec down to Cape Cod, Mass. and loved every minute of the drive! Looking forward to more train trips with you Paul!
