Excellent question. Luke 16:19-31 is an illustration/parable, not a series of events that happen when one dies. Practically speaking, can a dip in the water with a finger save someone from hell? No, and even if it were possible, what power would Abraham or Lazarus have to save someone from hell? Jesus used this illustration to teach a lesson which is that our eternal destiny is decided in our present lives, once we die, we cannot change our destination. You and many SDA members don't believe we are spiritual beings that have souls that live in a physical body and that our soul exists to God when we die physically. Jesus is the living word and the Gospel is the written word. Do our soul die at the time of physical death? In Matthew 10: 28 Jesus said to his disciples fear not them which kill the body but are not able to kill the soul. For when they kill you they kill only the body but are not able to kill your soul. Read your Bible on day six in Genesis God blew air into man and he became a living soul. Plus this when Jesus comes back what is He coming for if every soul returns to God at the death of the body? Jesus will be returning to give us who are in him a new glorious body which is a spiritual body. God does not want anything to do with our sinful nature which is in our natural body. We who are under Grace and not under the law are to walk in the newness of our regenerated spirit which Jesus spoke of in John 3: 3 to 16. Yes our body goes back to the ground but what happens to our spirit and soul? I will believe Jesus and Paul our Apostle over any SDA doctrine and miss information. Jesus said in Matthew 10: 28 only God can kill your soul in hell. Jesus told us through John 3:3 to 16 and Paul in Romans 10:9, 10 how we obtain a born again spirit. We were told after we accept Jesus as our Savior. God declared us Righteous and we are Justified by faith through Jesus. The Bible is very clear that our body is different from our inner spirit and our soul. We are to accept Jesus Christ as our Savior to obtain a born again spirit. We are to walk in our born again spirit through the Gospel which is the word who is Christ Jesus. If the body and the spirit are the same why there's a battle for the soul? Torment anguish and sadness to every soul that do Evel. Love, Peace, Joy, kindness, and goodness to every soul that practice good which is the fruit of the Holy Spirit which is the way we must walk in our born again spirit.
