I've noticed a few folks aren't happy with my, albeit poorly worded opinions on this competition. I said something to the effect of "You should have Japanese ancestry" as in a Japanese parent. Of course, this would get confusing very fast. Why not 25% Japanese after all? Then it all starts to get complicated and stupid, so why factor in ancestry at all. After all, us folks in the west couldn't care less; to be British, as long as you drink a cup of tea and eat Walkers Crisps, you're in and I think that's great. No-one's fate should ever be determined by their colour of their skin or racial background. Honestly, I don't know what the answer is to this stupid competition. I see both sides of the argument; I saw some Japanese women express disappointment online that a white girl won, and challenged the conventional view of Japanese beauty. Given this whole dumb cunt competition is about placing an outsized view on physicality and appearance over all else, it seemed to be interpreted as white = better, given there's about 60 million Japanese women, the vast majority of whom aren't white. Alas, I probably should have said nothing and let viewers reach their own conclusions on the matter. I've no real opinion on this other than Miss Beauty pageants are garbage.
Chris showing why he's the 4th member of trash taste. All jokes aside most people that know you Chris know you mean well. To anyone who doesn't understand the Japanese identity issues, I would highly recommend the documentary 'Being Japanese' by 'Life where I'm from'. It explains the issue from many perspectives. One of the issues with a racially homogenous society.
All in all its just for entertainment purpose, those national and international contests. People always want to take a pride in Something, especially so when they have nothing in their lives to be proud of (from their perspective). It never was "celebration of beauty" to begin with. Funny how in sports people are less picky about individuals nationality and race as long as they scoring a wins for their team=)
I moved from the UK to a SE Asian country to teach. In the UK I mostly taught exam English to adults and young adults, and thought my new position would be more of the same. Upon arrival however, I learnt that the adult courses had been closed, and instead I'd be teaching primary and kindergarten. Honestly the most fun I've ever had. Kids can be a bit intimidating, especially for a 6''3, heavily tattooed bloke, but once you realise you have to drop them from quite a height to break them in a non-repairable way you quickly adapt.
She served her purpose: She got people who would normally never pay any attention to the Miss Japan contest to talk about it. Otherwise, nobody cares who wins a beauty pageant save the participants themselves. The only way they can get any people to pay any attention at all is to make a "controversial" choice.
Just wanted to drop the perspective of an American who was put in beauty pageants as a kid. First off, pageants are NOT my cup of tea. However they are very important and special to some people. The perspective that makes the most sense is that Miss (whatever) represents the culture of your home and is a role model to whom you can relate to on a personal level because they share your culture, if not similar life experiences. As girls, we are encouraged to play with dolls, dress up, and get excited about beauty products. So it would make sense that a certain group of particularly talented women would want to showcase things that have brought them joy from a young age, and should be allowed to compete in that way. (All while encouraging a strong moral compass and work ethic.) Without understanding the positives it’s easy to look at it as parading cattle. It was very popular in the 90s in the United States. That being said, America is a melting pot of ethnicity, Japan is not. In America we take pride in being a collective group of all cultures. That isn’t the case in Japan. Both are beautiful parts of our distinctly different cultures. My husband and I wondered if choosing her was a bit of a progressive vote away from Japan’s heritage in hopes to encourage more foreigners to take a stronger interest in Japan. It’s the only reason the ruling made sense. Representation matters, and there are lots of little girls in Japan who now have no representation in the Miss Universe competition and that’s a shame.
One of the best things about your shows is that you actually introduce breaks for ads. Seems so obvious, but you're the only chap I know who's decent enough.
Chris broad “ we shouldn’t speak about the racist standard of the backlash she received, they should institutionalize it to avoid hassle’’ what a hero.
Japan places a high importance on not embarrassing yourself and your family name. So embarrassing yourself as a representative of the country is definitely a no go.
About tofu, I wonder what preparation did that guy tried to call it “tasteless”- because that’s the point. Like rice, it’s a blank slate that absorbs whatever other ingredients it’s prepared in. My favorites are agedashi and mapo tofu, both are super flavorful from the sauce it’s cooked in.
"Voss, the ridiculously overpriced water battle." Where I live, we call it "tap water". It's just regular Norwegian tap water. It's no magical spring or super rare stuff. We're basically selling water in a fancy bottle to the world. It sells because of the bottle, and because most countries have shit for water.
I love a good fireworks display. The only one I've been to in Japan was in Tokyo Bay back in 2010 (東京湾大華火祭). Apparently it's an annual event, but it's been in hiatus since 2015. It took me by surprise since I was attending the Comiket event at Odaiba in a ridiculous heatwave and the loudspeaker announcements were telling people to prepare for a change in the traffic situation because the Rainbow Bridge would get closed for traffic (due to the evening fireworks). Pretty much everyone went to the coastal parks facing the Tokyo Bay after emptying the convenience stores. It was a pretty long fireworks display seeing as every park around the Bay had their own "little" event, timed back-to-back after each other instead of everyone just launching everything at once. 10/10, would recommend, so I hope the event returns at some point.
Is the celebration of beauty a bad thing? Because it's not fair to less attractive people, or because it's exploitative? Just curious, I haven't really thought about it
@@Toddis the idea itself isn't bad in on itself The issue comes with how it's handled. Competitions like that are often a hellscape of abuse, things that could negatively impact health, arbitrary rules and criteria. It's less a celebration and more of a competition. What's considered beautiful ranges wildly and can in no way be represented by one most beautiful person. This is even more so the case in the model industry, I think it's worth watching a documentary or two on that if you're interested.
It seems to me that this particular podcast has been published in UA-cam before being released in the usual platforms (I normally listen to it on Spotify), as the one on the preservation of Mount Fuji that was due to be published here next was skipped.

Question: Chris and Pete, what's the most memorable art exhibit/museum you've been to in Japan? Commen: There's so many good tofu recipes on youtube. Like Chris mentions you can try it w so many good sauces, fried (firm texture), and like Pete said the silky version is good in soups. A different experience but both are good! I eat it almost every week
Looking forward to Pete’s series of travel videos where he travels to different sporting events around the world or at least Europe and the UK in his taxi, taking in some of local scene/wildlife/ eateries etc while he’s about it.
In Ukraine, many of us also think this is ridiculous that Carolina was allowed to participate in Miss Japan competition. We are not happy that now everybody thinks this was a political move...
She is a Japanese citizen why shouldn't she. It comes from racist place to think she shouldn't. Same BS when people didn't want black women in the Miss America BS.
I had a Bento recently which included a tofu dish that was simmered in a mixture of soy, miso and the meat juices from the grilled, thin beef and oinion dish that was also inlcuded.
I listened to the audio version but it was a different episode? The audio one is "Preserving Mount Fuji". Not that I'm complaining. I'll take two episodes!
To the tofu question, since I eat it 2-5 times a week now coming from someone who didn't 4 years ago. Eating tofu in soups is where you can learn to love it. But in reality, the soup is where the flavor comes from. And after a while, you start to crave "tofu"... or you associate the tofu as the soup. Eventually, you start picking up the flavor of tofu, and can start eating it out of a bowl sprinkles with green onions and soy sauce. Overall, it's a really slow flavor to get use to, versus grilled steak which can be an explosion of flavor.
Pete, you just get better looking dude... you're the dude, I think, who can probably pull off any look, so far, at least... love the Encarta95 hat. Saiko.
Also, to the comment about tracing heritage back 100,000 years, that's iffy. The predominate ethnic group in modern japan is Yamato/Wajin, which mostly draws from ethnic groups that migrated from Korea and to a less extent China around 300 BC. They still include markers from populations that inhabited Japan prior to this, but track much more closely with the Korean population than historic native Japanese. This is certainly longer ago than the US, but in many way not dissimilar. No one would say that the European population in the US is "ethnically American" though.
That's funny that Pete mentioned Vaas and Far Cry - I'm doing a replay of the series and am in the middle of playing FC3. Amazing and underrated games!
Pete making a spectacle! I am also digging the ironic snapbacks! Should you veer further into trucker hat territory, you will be pretty much on trend for the return of the 2000s aesthetic.
Don't disagree with her relinquishing her crown but the backlash is unreasonable fs. Not like she committed a crime. Idk how she will continue on. She even got let go by her modeling agency. There are ppl telling her she's a diagrace & she should go back to Ukraine. But on the other hand, I often see foreigners complaining about feeling excluded from Japanese society despite being fluent in the language. R u sure u really want to be included in this? Amongst other difficult things about living in Japan? There's much more to it than just being able to speak the language.
I mean if people stop trying to be included in Japanese society because they aren't ethnically Japanese then things are never going to change are they? What do you expect people to do? Stop ever coming to Japan and just leave Japan for ethnically Japanese people only? How'd that work out for North Korea again?
I think part of the reason people who speak Japanese but are excluded complain, is because the standard to become an accepted Japanese person is very different than other countries. At least in western countries, the ability to speak English is taken for granted, and you are expected to fully participate in the culture immediately. To imply that someone isn't a member of the nationality purely based on appearance or heritage is... well, there's a word for that. So when they put the effort in to be fluent in Japanese and go to japan only to be kept separate, it feels unfair. To them, there really isn't much more to it than the ability to speak the language and the willingness to participate. I think this is partially because of the difference in migration policies, since japan isn't really used to accepting large numbers of foreigners into their culture. It is a complicated issue, but I can understand their frustration.
Non-Japanese can be included in Japanese society, just don't expect them to be considered Japanese. Japan isn't America, it has been a homogeneous society for thousands of years. As far as I know, it never claimed to be a multi-racial melting pot. And that has worked well for them, for better or for worse, for thousands of years. It is only in the last 170 years (1850s to 2020s) that Japan has become fully part of a global system (and only through the threat of violence - look at the Perry Expedition). Keep in mind, a large portion of that era (Imperial Japan (1868 - 1945) was developed as conceiving themself as a nation of Asians.@@StreakyBaconMan
I am Ukrainian and, while russia tries to destroy everything and everyone Ukrainian, I am so happy to see that Japanese people voted for the girl who was born in Ukraine 🇺🇦 I am really sorry to hear about the controversy
Scandals like this are nothing new. Based on everything I've heard, Japan places a high moral standard on their celebrities. That's why a lot of idols have had tragic endings. It's definitely too far, but the west has the opposite problem with their celebrities. In Japan, they expect their celebrities to be morally upstanding. But in the west, we pretty much expect celebrities to be degenerate hedonists. Just another example of an aspect of Japanese society taking the opposite extreme as the west does when it comes to individuality vs group think. The world would be better if there was a balance between the two extremes.
Bit of a shit take on ethnicity tbh. There's a ton of Japanese people who don't look like your typical Japanese person, that shouldn't make them any less Japanese. No wonder these people often feel displaced despite never knowing another country. This former Miss Japan would obviously feel a deeper connection to Japan than Ukraine, but by your logic, Chris, she shouldn't be allowed to compete because she doesn't have the requisite amount of Japanese blood? I feel like Pete probably didn't share your view here but didn't want to call it out directly. I'm not a SJW or anything but making a designation based on the immutability of your race is cooked.
I wouldn't call it "high moral standard", that'd mean they believe in that sort of moralistic crap. I'd call it things like extremely hypocritical or emotional manipulation, as at least in places like the idol industry keeping the idols "single" is an illusion created by their managers to manipulate the fans into believing that they are available, and the revelation that they've dared to have a life of their own, including something as human as having a romantic partner is seen as a betrayal to the fans and ends in humiliation for the one involved. Also, as it's said in the pod, there's the double standard of women being punished by it but men being able to brush it under the carpet.
Rhm that was really nice to let the kid see out the window. When I fly I'm still glued to the window at this age. (I love the flying, stress out terribly in most airports. :) As for the beauty pageant thing, (I don't think much of beauty pageants in the first place,) but Anyway, I'm sure she's a wonderful person, but I can see ethnic Japanese girls feeling bad that someone who looks like them isn't representing the country in that particular area.
I disagree, I think that ethnicity shouldn't factor into who gets to participate in general beauty pageants. That said, I understand the logic why they would want an event celebrating the ethnically Japanese traits, since several Asian countries seem to have difficult relationships with their native beauty standards, so it's great that they have the space to embrace their unique qualities. But if that's the purpose of the event, they need to be up front with it and not have allowed different entrants to begin with instead of inflicting all this pain on this poor woman. The only one I hold responsible for this mess is the organisers of Miss Japan, and I hope they struggle to sleep at night knowing they are directly responsible for irreversibly destroying a woman's life.
A white woman has stolen the place of a Native Japanese. I dont know about you but if that were me I'd be very upset, its obsurd if you think its ok for someone to prance around and pretend their Japanese fully knowing they are white. Who was the official that allowed this to happen? I hope they start realising this!
Yeah on the last Video I already said (same as chris) that it should not matter what she does in her private life .... also as you said maybe she didn't even know the guy had a wife already, not like she was the one cheating in the first place.
She was raised in Japan, after all. Jokes aside, you are still pretty much done even a guy if you are caught having an affair. (e.g. 渡部建、東出昌大) Just saying.
So with the Ms Japan affair thing. It could be because in Japan technically (as a woman) you can sue another woman for having an affair with your husband. It has something to do with Japan's views on the man being the earner for the family and you are technically messing with the wife's source of income. Also all the talk of Ms Japan being dated the funny thing is thr people who run it are usually older men but as with most beauty pagents the audience is mostly women (and gay men). So literally the demographic that is being most objectified by the pagent are the ones who keep it on the air.
I am all for the shaming Japan got for their 'outrage' of a non Japanese person winning. At some point we should expect all countries to move into the 21st century.
#thefaxmachine Hello Crag Chris and Peppy Pete, I have heard a few stories recently of what it’s like to be at a hospital in a country where you don’t speak the language. The idea of it seems rather daunting and I was curious if you or anyone you know has ever had to navigate the ins and outs of medical treatment in a foreign land. Are there any things to be aware of if the time ever arises where it is necessary to see medical treatment in an unfamiliar place. From a nervous curious listener.
Seems Chris' opinion throwng her under the bus is a bit... shit? Always thought with the way you spoke you had her back,. but are now turning on her because ethnicity?
Japan does not have good cheese. The only good cheese you will find in Japan is imported and expensive. I often bring cheese back with me whenever I visit the U.S., but I would not do it in the summer. It will not hold up very well. It is possible if you take the necessary measures, but I cannot be bothered.
I don't watch pageants but I have watched a few documentaries on pageants. So I know enough to know that the rules are clear, you are not allowed to get engaged or married while you wear the crown and you are certainly not allowed to have affairs. And she would have known in advance as it's very clearly set out
Knowing nothing about Pageants wouldnt she of been picked by Japanese judges or w/e? The Pageant is base on the judges opinions so if she was picked to win that title then she deserves that title cause thats how it works? If people have a problem thats their problem should be with the judges not the contestant?

@@jerrylepoppin And the word for that is racism. Or xenophobia, if you want to be fancy about it.
Enjoyed hat chat at the beginning. Pete looking mildly like a cop with the stache, hat and glasses
Loving that hat as a 90’s kid
@AbroadinJapanPodcast why was this episode not posted to spotify
Good for her.
did you release Thursdays video podcast early??
I think they messed up 😅😂
Pete: Better not cheap out on anti-glare, because we can almost see what is on your monitor. 🤓
What mic do you use?
Not the ENCARTA hat! Im new here so holy blast from the past!
@Pete, old Toyotas are great and rarely die. I just got some parts from Amayama last week, great company to deal with.
Very well put.
Kanye West...😅
It's actually a damn good look Pete
He looks good 🥰
Rhm that was really nice to let the kid see out the window.
I officially sent my first email to the podcast gmail box 🎉
Japan belongs to the Japanese
A white woman has stolen the place of a Native Japanese. I dont know about you but if that were me I'd be very upset, its obsurd if you think its ok for someone to prance around and pretend their Japanese fully knowing they are white. Who was the official that allowed this to happen? I hope they start realising this!
Did Sharla provide the new glasses? Seems she's always promoting them.
Don't forget mabodofu, I love that stuff.
Yeah on the last Video I already said (same as chris) that it should not matter what she does in her private life .... also as you said maybe she didn't even know the guy had a wife already, not like she was the one cheating in the first place.
look at the cap of Pete!?! amazing 😁
I think Chris may have missed Pete's point that it's the cheese that would sweat not the person carrying it! 😂
that vegan restaurant you mentioned sounds amazing, it closed? petition to reinstate
If she can't win Miss Japan, then neither can a black woman win Miss Ireland.
I am all for the shaming Japan got for their 'outrage' of a non Japanese person winning. At some point we should expect all countries to move into the 21st century.
Pete is going for the "Uno-Bomber" look on this weeks Podcast 🙂
Cheese rec: aged Havarti, it’s got a great salty crunch.
Question: Do you really have to wait in line to enter so many restaurants?
#thefaxmachine
Hello Crag Chris and Peppy Pete,
I have heard a few stories recently of what it’s like to be at a hospital in a country where you don’t speak the language. The idea of it seems rather daunting and I was curious if you or anyone you know has ever had to navigate the ins and outs of medical treatment in a foreign land. Are there any things to be aware of if the time ever arises where it is necessary to see medical treatment in an unfamiliar place.
From a nervous curious listener.
what about koreans who live in japan for decades and almost a century? can they be allowed yo participate in that beauty contest?
Im thinking Pete and I are the same age😂😂😂😂
I thought Pete ordered the car like 3 years ago? What is this?
Almost didn’t click on this cause the thumbnail was so similar to the last. Great pod though
I've got no problems with kids they love me, I just offer them candy and they follow me anywhere.
Sharp glasses Pete!
Pete is just so damn funny. That whole part where Chris asks about the kids killed me. 😂
Why does Chris look like he has been sleeping rough? Has Sharla kicked him out?😂
The only time I eat tofu is when it is in miso soup and mapo tofu. Mapo tofu is kinda cheating cause it usually has some meat with it.
Pete looks like BTK for real. Someone check his crawlspace asap.
T's Tan Tan is in Tokyo Station now
Encarta '95 I want that hat
Look at the Japanese rugby team how many Kiwi's are in it
Is this win95 look inspired by just announced Finland's Eurovision 2024 candidate the Windows95man? 😂
Seems Chris' opinion throwng her under the bus is a bit... shit? Always thought with the way you spoke you had her back,. but are now turning on her because ethnicity?
I agree with Pete that this should be done away with and we shouldn’t even have to worry about it
Lovly
She wasn't even the real 'Miss Japan' which is the Miss Universe Japan. She was basically a private company's PR stunt.
I beta tested for windows 98
Microsoft Encarta. Those were the bad old days where plagiarism was extremely identifiable at school
cheese in foil is it dairylea =p
if the same person that spit on you gave you a gift ,would you still keep that gift?
Sounds like hanging out with Ryotaro
I'm sorry to hear that, definitely has to do with upbringing,we're not all raised in love or kind entourage.
Hundreds of thousends of years 😅
Excuse my english 😂
Japan does not have good cheese. The only good cheese you will find in Japan is imported and expensive. I often bring cheese back with me whenever I visit the U.S., but I would not do it in the summer. It will not hold up very well. It is possible if you take the necessary measures, but I cannot be bothered.
Is miss Japan seen as an idol? I dont know and i would love to 🎉
Unleash your serious and humanistic side, Chris. Be a better man. I know you have it in you!
I don't watch pageants but I have watched a few documentaries on pageants. So I know enough to know that the rules are clear, you are not allowed to get engaged or married while you wear the crown and you are certainly not allowed to have affairs. And she would have known in advance as it's very clearly set out
Battered, deep fried tofu is good.
Pete, you're too harsh on yourself... I don't know if vogue is going to cover it but it's not a bad ensemble...
She should have given it to natsuki
Knowing nothing about Pageants wouldnt she of been picked by Japanese judges or w/e? The Pageant is base on the judges opinions so if she was picked to win that title then she deserves that title cause thats how it works? If people have a problem thats their problem should be with the judges not the contestant?
Moustache and talking about Windows 95? Are you actually Finnish?
I mean, winner of the Finnish pre-selection for Eurovision is windows95man.
