Too much screen time leads to delay in picking up communication skills

Of late parents have been visiting experts taking up the case of their late-talking children. The number of such cases has increased since the outbreak of Covid-19. The pandemic has created a situation where children spend much of their time onscreen. If children in the age group of 0-3years are exposed to too much screen time, it could lead to delayed speech and communication skills. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children under the age of 2 should not be exposed to electronic screens. Excessive screen time has adverse effects on children’s social participation and behavior. It is also pointed out that too much screen time in children is positively correlated with autism-like symptoms in children. Parents should not hesitate to consult a Speech-Language Pathologist if their child displays signs of delayed speech.
