I want to clarify a little bit. If people who know how to budget and planning well, by the retirement age, their house should be fully paid off. Most of Khmer people whom i know, they came to US in the 80's like me, they no longer have mortgage or car loan. My home is only 8 miles from Tesla car production. The house price is expensive. Average home price is $2M. I don’t expect the new comers can buy the property here. $500k is cheap relative to CA home price.
