This game was ahead of it’s time. Games are not this responsive and fun anymore. I hope games become like this someday in the future. It’s just pure fun and feels so good!
Exactly. Unfortunately they kind of forgot that with deadly Descents. They tried to hard to make the weather challenges an important theme without questioning if it was fun.
This game is my happy place. My favorite little detail is when you go into a tunnel or cave and the music will sound like you put your hand over the speaker
I love how the music changes depending on what you're doing - especially when it's all quiet and muffled in the air, and then blasts back on as you land.
From one fan to another this was great. You nailed it talking about how special this game is, and over the years I lose saves and get annoyed but know I’m just gonna go through the whole thing again
One of the first games I ever played as a child back in the early 2000s on the PS2. Even 20 years later, I still see myself booting up the game, this time on my Series S to either improve my PBs or to just simply wanting to witness those stylish tricks. The courses intertwined, the radio with DJ Atomika announcing what you're doing, the dynamic music, the hefty amount of secret characters & concept art you can unlock in-game. The passion and love for this game is immense. The Dev's love shine though and though. They're not many games I would say are prefect but SSX3 is near perfection. There's a reason why whenever snowboarding is afoot, SSX will be mentioned. Just shows you how BIG of an impact the series has.
Played 3 first then played tricky and like... 3 is just so much better lol. Also my all time favorite game, every winter I do a couple playthroughs with at least 4 characters.
My favourite game by far too. I've actually just re purchased the game and a second hand PS2 ( mine would no longer play the game). SSX was amazing, Tricky was a bit more player friendly, but SSX 3 just knocked it out of the park. Hated On Tour and SSX for the PS3. Basically because they were nothing like SSX 3. I was gonna paint my living room next week, now that's looking unlikely!
Every time I hear Stare at the Sun from Thrice I get instantly transported back to sitting on my brothers floor playing this game as a kid. Truly amazing
Amen to that, and Snow Patrol by Alpine Stars, and Poor Leno by Royksopp. I still listen to a vast majority of the SSX3 soundtrack on a daily basis, especially at the gym 😁
This was from EAs golden era. EA gets a lot of crap these days, understandably so. But early 2000s EA was amazing, madden, Tiger Woods PGA, Need For Speed Underground, SSX, Def Jam, Fight Night Round 3, Lord of The Rings trilogy, Sims, Burnout…the list goes on . I miss that era of EA games. You should do a video on 2000s EA games. They really helped define that generation of games
Hearing Dj Atomica's voice just makes me smile this game definitely is amongst the best games I have played on ps2. its a game I spent time mastering a friend of mine borrowed me for like 3 months and I played it religously
Just seeing people bring this game back into existence brings tears to my eyes ssx3 will forever be tht game its incomparable like no other wish it was revamped 😢
Yes man. I keep trying to tell as many people as possible how good the game is, glad you're spreading the word. the overall feel, mechanics, and detail put into the characters and soundtrack just goes unmatched in all time games
SSX3 was overflowing with personality and the game felt so alive and engaging. I personally never used the arcade sound effects because on top of everything else about it, those were just extra noises that pulled away from the environment and character reactions and interactions. The chatty DJ reporting on mountain events and progress really helped seal the atmosphere of a place that would be alive if there were other characters roaming around the mountain. But it was fine. Timeless classic. Loved wandering around freely. Least fav Peak was peak 3 only because most areas there really upped the obstructions in the way and that's just not for me haha.
If you have a modern XBOX, you can buy SSX3 again and play it in full HD (accept for the videoparts: which one really should not care about) and with much more fluence. I bought an XBOX One S, just to finally play this good old game again and to bring back those wonderfull nostalgic childhood memories ^^
Literally grew up on this game. Still the greatest of all time. Would love a remaster or port for modern PlayStation hardware. I still have the game and a PS2 but setting it up on a plasma screen TV is a pain with component cables adapting into hdmi. The picture on a plasma screen TV also looks way worse than on an old CRT like I had growing up. I loved absolutely everything about this game though. Even the jank you show in the video had me and my brother laughing each time we bounced off some forbidden geometry into the void. I love the character banter with themselves and each other. It’s wacky like the rest of the game, but there are some pretty unforgettable lines in there. The characters themselves are all unique and memorable as well. Viggo and Psymon were the funniest to me at the time, with one being a total party animal and the other being certifiably insane. The amazing tricks, the secret characters, punching other riders down the slopes; just tons of fun. Thanks for helping me relive some of it so many years later.
I loved SSX3 when it came out and its still my go to PS2 game, the music, the smooth framerate and the pick up and play just make it a all round banger of a game. Shame EA dropped the ball with the series.
I played this game heavily back in high school, I even submitted a few records to leaderboards as jasper426. The community around this and Tricky + OnTour is also still pretty big, I was friends with Daggy who basically became the first SSX-centered channel to reach a thousand subs. It's crazy how the pro-snowboarding genre of games still hasn't been topped after SSX 3. I've played the SSX games both before and after 3, and more modern games like Steep and Riders Republic. Nothing even comes close to the feel and aesthetic of SSX 3. Maybe it's nostalgia talking! But I think the customization, track design, "Open world" layout, RPG-style progression, and soundtrack/DJ Atomika just make this the perfect snowboarding game. The only thing I hate about this game are the Xbox controls! Should've kept the button layout the same as PS2.
Just in terms of style and overall attitude, I definitely prefer Tricky. It was actually where I started with the franchise and backtracking to SSX1 to complete the series was jarring but interesting. Tricky just had that funky, feel good, last vestiges of the 90's bleeding into the 2000's vibe that I can go back to anytime, and as a kid I was honestly wowed by the star power in the game. The fact that it had real movie and tv stars for the cast and a whole behind the scenes content section with making-of videos, interviews, dev commentary, etc, made it feel really special and important. That being said, SSX3 is the game I probably spent more time on than any other in my PS2 library, just because I could always go back to it and did so any chance I could. For a while, I probably knew my way around Big Mountain better than I knew the city I grew up in. All the spinoffs and weird pseudo-sequels that came after it never really felt like proper canonical continuations, and that gritty reboot was so painfully forgettable, I bet you reading this didn't even realize there was a gritty SSX reboot. The first three SSX games just had a very unique and incredibly fun soulfulness to them that isn't something that can easily be duplicated. EA Big just had that magic to them.
I remember when my oldest brother got his PS2 and grabbed SSX with it so his two youngest brothers (my twinbrother and me) can also play on it.. Soon after that I told him that I liked the game he bought Tricky, I loved it.. Fast forward to the trailer of SSX 3, he went to get that as well even though he didn't play any SSX. I always asked if I could play SSX 3 at his room, sometimes he let me, other times he didn't cause he also wants to play other games, which is fair. Whenever I got back from school very early I always asked my mom if my brother is home and if she said no I would race upstairs and started playing..... until he returns and he sends me out of his room hahah. When he got the PS3, the PS2 went to my room and I was able to play the game whenever I wanted. I always went for Mac and Kaor!
I started over from scratch ssx3 on emulator 20 years after having it as a child. One of my favorite games (see my favorite) What a joy to, as you say, find this incredible "flow" that it provides. After finally finishing it in platinum I moved on to On tour ... And as a young person this 4th opus disappointed me again. This return to gravity or the entire descent of the mountain with this soundtrack that I also listen to when I ride in real life. What a joy.
SSX3 is definitely the better game but ive always had a preference for SSX On Tour. The feeling and energy to the game, at least in the beginning, is the total opposite of 3. You feel so small and alone and separate, no cool guy to narrate your journey, and the people you compete with aren't the same recognizable in universe celebrities, just a bunch of other people like you trying to get somewhere (at least to start).
I played this game when it got released, and I think I was like seven years old. I think it was my dream to live in this mountain lol. I was riding peak 3 the other day and Nate flew past me saying “if speed kills, you’re totally safe” lol. You are definitely right, the pros completely obliterate the cons of this game. Playing this on series X
DJ Atomica is soooooo good. Nothing else in gaming comes close to how he made me feel while I was going down the mountain. Such a well written part of gaming
Loved the 3 game run from Tricky to On Tour. Ssx3 was the perfect game. Soundtrack, the tracks, replay value, tricks, etc. And the secret characters! Seeing Eddie again, snowboarding as a literal yeti, they even had Stretch from NBA Vol 2 👏🏾👏🏾 love this game
i remember playing this game religiously growing up and the vibe that it gave me, it was so special and unique, now when looking back i remember the feeling it gave me, but i cant feel it anymore, which is heartbreaking, cuz every game just feels dull when all grown up..
I agree it’s one of my favourite games of all time. You did forget a very important attention to detail and that is how the music changes when you are airborne and when you trick. Extremely satisfying.
I just downloaded it the other day its still so GOOD! I snowboard quite a bit and I actually found that the tricks you do if there not ubers are quite realistic and not over the top the spinning and flips has caught up with the times of real snowboarding today.
Thank you so much for this video, you did translate into words what I could never explain before about how I got into that sort of zen state when I was playing the game. I only don't agree with your opinion abt super pipe haha, god that mode was so fun to me
ssx 3 was one of the top games out there, i played every character and unlocked every outfit for each character, they were all so different, everyone had different moves and combos and ultimates
Games nowadays are like cars. They don't make them like they used to be. Man SSX3 was perfect. That soundtrack was perfect. Every time I boot it up I get a huuuuuge nostalgia moment.
Best childhood game ever for me hands down! I still play it sometimes using an emulator and listen to the songs regularly. You pointed out many of the main "buggy" parts of the game. Which one was your favorite character? I remember being in the trick shop/manager and just watching the special tricks animations for HOURS. Also, did you also play "on tour" and if yes, what's your opinion on it?
I always used Kaori in SSX3 but didn't really like her depiction in any of the other games. Some of the bigger characters feel off if you get used to the smaller ones. I've been meaning to try some of the later SSX games like On Tour, after 3 I've only played the PS3 one.
Another reason we won't ever get a game like this again: Arcade-style AAA games don't exist anymore. This was the peak period where big publishers were funding wacky arcade-style action. This basically died with the PS3 and was totally dead by the PS4 era.
Btw, tricky and 3 are not to be put in the same ring to fight it out... If you are gonna battle any it's on tour and 3. The shortcut game in tricky is just better because it's not open world and they give you a san Fransisco rush style "alternate" track. 3 simply has a wide slide with veins you can pick where tricky feels more like different pipes. If you wanna say what games best it would be for feel. And 3 just feels better. But if you could bhave the feel of three and the tracks of tricky... U have some crazy fun.
They need to make an ssx 4 in this same style wild mountains new accessories, crazy snowboards, unique gear, and of course new riders with crazy personalities that game never came back after ssx on tour sadly...
seriously, every time i think about this game if i'm not playing it is "it's the best game ever" there's a guy making a game called "tricky madness" and it's basically an SSX revival game, like how bombrush is to jet set. it already looks GREAT and he's not releasing it until winter 2025, so it's only getting better (hopefully.) i think there's a demo too. so, look out for that
a game so good that i stopped emulating it on my computer and bought the game for the Xbox series X (only a tenner what a steal). Imagine my surprise when I found out it runs at 1080p on the Xbox!!
I love SSX 3 with all of my heart. I like how you’re pointing out all these nuanced things about how great the game is. However, I wanted to point out that the Xbox version has the worst control scheme due the lack of shoulder buttons on OG controller. The best control scheme is the PS2 version, even better than GameCube version. Hope you can find an emulator that allows for you to play that version with a DualShock or DualSense. I’m sure you’ll appreciate it greatly. You’re so right about Xbox Series X version, though. It’s a flawless, brilliant port except for the horrible Xbox control scheme, lol. Still worth 15 bucks.
Was playing ssx tricky the other day and yes it’s so janky. Was playing one of the characters i haven’t used much and ended up getting stuck on a ledge 😂 he fell down and then just got stuck. I also loved these games as a kid. I remember us having an. Xbox in class and we’d try to beat eachother at the game. Only issue i could play at home and had been playing tricky to death so when i played 3 at school i’d smash everyone at it
Race: what game wouldn't have a race mode, first one to the bottom wins slopestyle: pull off as many tricks as possible before you get to the bottom Big Air: this is basically a snowboarding version of Ski Jump only you just need to pull off tricks...not go distance. Super Pipe: it's basically half pipe...only very creative and exaggerated. but then why wouldn't there be half pipes?
SSX 3 is my favourite game of all time, but I think it does two things poorly. The first is, as you mentioned, the jank. Some things just don't work well. Be that the ramp physics sometimes getting weird (especially in Gravitude), or the very odd hitboxes with some entities, such as the checkpoint Big Challenges. The second big issue with this game is how it doesn't really explain much of the in-depth mechanics. You said that getting platinum medals are tough, but if you know about monster tricks you can get slopestyle platinums in one jump. Metro City has three teleport booths which make platinum medals trivial, and the race tracks usually have a path which make platinums very easy to achieve, with Grav being the outlier as it's always a challenge. If this game underwent bugfixing (please leave the spin tapping alone tho, EA), added a tutorial, and got very basic modernisation of mechanics, it would be received very well even today. Edit: Also, I'd generally recommend playing on PCSX2 rather than Dolphin if your PC can play it with good framerates. With the Gamecube's missing shoulder button you miss out on an Uber trick, not only lessening the variety, but also it happens to be the shortest duration trick which can be useful if you find yourself needing Super Uber in a jiffy.
So you mentioned the jank. While I won't disagree I will say you're probably dealing with more playing on the GameCube version. From my experience the GameCube version bugs out far more than the others. I don't encounter it too much on the PS2 version.
SSX3 is definitely my favorite sport game of all time. The soundtrack is great, it screams 2000's all over the place.
This game is my happy place. My favorite little detail is when you go into a tunnel or cave and the music will sound like you put your hand over the speaker
I love how the music changes depending on what you're doing - especially when it's all quiet and muffled in the air, and then blasts back on as you land.
Fun fact, DJ Antomika was also in Burnout Paradise. Seems like any game he’s in is a certified banger.
From one fan to another this was great. You nailed it talking about how special this game is, and over the years I lose saves and get annoyed but know I’m just gonna go through the whole thing again
I literally enjoyed this review so much. It basically just but all of my thoughts into a UA-cam video.
One of the first games I ever played as a child back in the early 2000s on the PS2. i'm so glad there's people out there that understand this game is miles better than tricky
Both are fun imo. Equally clunkfest tho but i love it
SSX3 is way better, but both are great
Only recently got to play ssx3 and despite all my nostalgia for tricky I'd agree that 3 is better
Played 3 first then played tricky and like... 3 is just so much better lol.
Also my all time favorite game, every winter I do a couple playthroughs with at least 4 characters.
Shout out to the AI upscaled texture pack for dolphin ;)
is it on PS2?
My favourite game by far too. I've actually just re purchased the game and a second hand PS2 ( mine would no longer play the game). SSX was amazing, Tricky was a bit more player friendly, but SSX 3 just knocked it out of the park. Hated On Tour and SSX for the PS3. Basically because they were nothing like SSX 3. Have fun!
Every time I hear Stare at the Sun from Thrice I get instantly transported back to sitting on my brothers floor playing this game as a kid. Truly amazing
That’s my favourite song in the game as well
Amen to that, and Snow Patrol by Alpine Stars, and Poor Leno by Royksopp.
I still listen to a vast majority of the SSX3 soundtrack on a daily basis, especially at the gym 😁
This was from EAs golden era. EA gets a lot of crap these days, understandably so. Totally agree, even into the ps3 era they were releasing some classics
Hearing Dj Atomica's voice just makes me smile this game definitely is amongst the best games I have played on ps2. its a game I spent time mastering a friend of mine borrowed me for like 3 months and I played it religously
I would pay a disgusting amount of money for an SSX3 remaster
Just seeing people bring this game back into existence brings tears to my eyes ssx3 will forever be tht game its incomparable like no other wish it was revamped 😢
Epic game! I have great memories watching a friend play this so much that I feel like I grew up on those mountains! Let's go SSX 3!
I love Ssx3. One thing I also loved were the characters
Nothing like going from the top of Peak 3 all the way down through Metro City.
So much good memories with this game! When I was a little kid I had it on my ps2, nowadays I have it on my computer as a ps2 emulator.
If you have a modern XBOX, you can buy SSX3 again and play it in full HD (accept for the videoparts: which one really should not care about) and with much more fluence. I bought an XBOX One S, just to finally play this good old game again and to bring back those wonderfull nostalgic childhood memories ^^
the future sucks /
Literally grew up on this game. Still the greatest of all time. Would love a remaster or port for modern PlayStation hardware. I still have the game and a PS2 but setting it up on a plasma screen TV is a pain with component cables adapting into hdmi. The picture on a plasma screen TV also looks way worse than on an old CRT like I had growing up.

Still love SSX, still play it too!
Playing SSX on the Xbox Series X is 4k 60fps great experience
Tricky is where most of us started.
SSX3 is where we matured.
The only thing I hate about this game are the Xbox controls! Should've kept the button layout the same as PS2.
i loved how this game made you feel like you were part of it. The radio station really did some great world building
Tricky, 3 and On Tour will always be my favorites. SSX needs a new game for modern consoles! ❄️❄️❄️
Just in terms of style and overall attitude, I definitely prefer Tricky. I know it's a weird thing but ur thumbnail is so on point, that's one of the most beautiful things I've seen in terms of vibe
I remember when my oldest brother got his PS2 and grabbed SSX with it so his two youngest brothers (my twinbrother and me) can also play on it.. There’s a speed to ssx on tour that I really enjoy. SSX3 nails everything down. But on tour is good in its own way
I played this game when it got released, and I think I was like seven years old. I think it was my dream to live in this mountain lol.
I was riding peak 3 the other day and Nate flew past me saying “if speed kills, you’re totally safe” lol.

This game is pure gold! I have so many fond memories passing the controller back and forth with my dad when I was in middle school.
I agree it’s one of my favourite games of all time. You did forget a very important attention to detail and that is how the music changes when you are airborne and when you trick. Extremely satisfying.
this is top 10 for me too. never get bored of it.
DJ Atomika is probably the best Greek Chorus in the history of video games
I just downloaded it the other day its still so GOOD! I snowboard quite a bit and I actually found that the tricks you do if there not ubers are quite realistic and not over the top the spinning and flips has caught up with the times of real snowboarding today.
Can confirm he plays it a lot
Thank you so much for this video, you did translate into words what I could never explain before about how I got into that sort of zen state when I was playing the game. I only don't agree with your opinion abt super pipe haha, god that mode was so fun to me
8:00 whaaaat I'm pretty sure I 100%-ed this game multiple times, and I never knew about lip tricks
Just downloaded this on the Xbox store. The nostalgia has hit pretty hard.
ssx 3 was one of the top games out there, i played every character and unlocked every outfit for each character, they were all so different, everyone had different moves and combos and ultimates
I enjoyed Superpipe as a kid. My Cousin only played Superpipe and I always tried to beat her HighScore. It was like chasing an Arcade Leaderboard.
A top game of all time for me as well
when we first got a gamecube this was one of the first games we had i still play it and is the best snowboarding game ever
Games nowadays are like cars. They don't make them like they used to be.
Man SSX3 was perfect. That soundtrack was perfect. Every time I boot it up I get a huuuuuge nostalgia moment.
there's gonna be a spiritual successor to this on Steam soon
Tricky Madness
I LOVE this game to this day. It was good. Big nostalgia for me.
Man I gotta go back and replay the SSX games
Great vid, you should get some lights though
SSX 3 is amazing!!! Great video.
im proud to be a ssx3 kid since early 2000s
This is the only game that gets me to actually play my best, triehard. Still very fun after 20 years
Best childhood game ever for me hands down!
I've been meaning to try some of the later SSX games like On Tour, after 3 I've only played the PS3 one.
couldnt say it better, where to get the hd texture package for ssx3?
“Post Y2K Coolness”. You nailed it. Take me back. 😢
Another reason we won't ever get a game like this again: Arcade-style AAA games don't exist anymore. This was the peak period where big publishers were funding wacky arcade-style action. This basically died with the PS3 and was totally dead by the PS4 era.
I wish EA released a remaster or a brand new SSX 4 for PS5 with online multiplayer... I'd definitely play it.
Aah this was great. I think ssx3 was the first game i 100 %ed. The flow state is real~
even the way the game's system of generating the trick is so wild.
you can get "???" if you get a big enough trick that exceeds 5 stars
Superpipe was my favorite purely cause I could freestyle as much as I want
17:23 nuff said 😂
I highly enjoyed the superpipe events
I have that same Baby Metal poster! Only the fox god knows 🦊🎸🔥
I miss this game. Pure dopamine.
In my top 3 games of all time played it for years growing up 🏂 Sad there’s no fun arcadey feeling snowboarding/skiing games now
SSX 3 hands down top 5 games on my list
Just now finding out you could grab the lip on the super pipe
Just got an rca to hdmi adapter so i can bust out my GameCube and play this again and I’m so hyped
They need to make an ssx 4 in this same style wild mountains new accessories, crazy snowboards, unique gear, and of course new riders with crazy personalities that game never came back after ssx on tour sadly...
seriously, every time i think about this game if i'm not playing it is "it's the best game ever"
there's a guy making a game called "tricky madness" and it's basically an SSX revival game, like how bombrush is to jet set. it already looks GREAT and he's not releasing it until winter 2025, so it's only getting better (hopefully.) i think there's a demo too. so, look out for that
Man peak 3 has me bad. Am currently playing and am not even using a controller im using touchscreen, which is definitely harder 💀
a game so good that i stopped emulating it on my computer and bought the game for the Xbox series X (only a tenner what a steal).
Only issue i could play at home and had been playing tricky to death so when i played 3 at school i’d smash everyone at it
And I knew of this game thanks to The Sims 2!
• Can we PLEASE get a remastered version of this game for PS5 & XBOX
Race: what game wouldn't have a race mode, first one to the bottom wins
slopestyle: pull off as many tricks as possible before you get to the bottom
Big Air: this is basically a snowboarding version of Ski Jump only you just need to pull off tricks...not go distance.
Super Pipe: it's basically half pipe...only very creative and exaggerated. but then why wouldn't there be half pipes?
super pipe was my favorite lmao
They just need a reskin. Like fabric detail and leaves.... Snow powder...
Cant believe EA closed the BIG studios :/ yet another amazing franchise lost to corporate greed
It saddens me they don‘t do unique games like these anymore…
I fucking agree 10000% with this video
you really know ball
I have found my people
eye literally played it on that exact tv /
DJ ATOMICKA 🐐
I just want to buy an Xbox just to purchase ssx3
So you mentioned the jank. While I won't disagree I will say you're probably dealing with more playing on the GameCube version. From my experience the GameCube version bugs out far more than the others. I don't encounter it too much on the PS2 version.
Happiness on peak 1 is the best map on the game =]
Nah cool boarders put these types of games on the map 1000 percent
Best game ever ❤
SKIP SUPER PIPE????!??!?!?!?!!?!?!??!?!!?!?!?!?
