Thank you so much for sharing this really interesting video related towards what to expect at a Passover Seder. Passover begins on Friday, April 15, the same day as Good Friday in the Christian faith. You did the most wonderful job explaining what to except at a Passover Seder, I totally love your personality Marion and your videos make me really happy! 😍
I've been hosting seders since I left home for college. Especially my first year I was very stressed reading through every haggadah I could find to make sure nothing is missed and the order is right, and making lists upon lists to make sure I had everything. But it's always worth it! Even when I'm the only jewish person there it's been incredibly meaningful.
I was in Armenia El Salvador last July, and I experienced 100% converts, practicing Sephardi tradition. Thank goodness for the ability to travel freely BH
Another good reason to snack before Seder is that you have the first two cups of wine before dinner! But a newcomer should also know that the purpose of the wine is not to get drunk (like on Purim), and most hosts will offer grape juice as a non-alcoholic option.
I love when all of the holidays happen around the same time. Jewish and Christian. I work in the food store. So I guess to see the hustle to get everything ready!!!
Great ideas! I think the only caveat I’d add is the dress code probably depends on where you live. I live in a part of the country where I’d be shocked if someone came to my house all dressed up for any event, because it’s super casual here. But I’m sure in the east coast dressing up is much more common! So dress how you would fit thanksgiving dinner is my advice :)
I bought your Haggadah and I absolutely love it, it is explains everything perfectly and I am sure my family and I will enjoy it for years and it is very beautiful
Thank you so much for this video on Seder- I am non-Jewish and it’s my 1st invitation - I clearly felt excited to receive the invitation but also thought you had to be Jewish to attend- Now, after viewing your video I will walk in with confidence- Thank you!
Excellent advice, all the way. I was lucky enough to participate in an online seder last night, with all the guests on Zoom connected from their homes in different cities. I hope to get to do one in person next year or so, given the chance. Since ours was online, there was no outright joyous singing, and we didn't have children running around trying to find that one piece of matzah, but all the other elements were there. Our host walked us through all the steps.
As a child my family went a unitarian church and we learned about both Christian and Jewish holidays and customs we even had a Seder and as kid I had to ask one of the four questions
Shavua Tov...hope your pesach prep is going well....also a nice gift is like pretty napkins,or like small hand towels with like a nice smelling hand soap..
I am going to a Chabad seder Friday. I don't have family and no invites to go to anyone in my community so Chabad it is. Excited and nervous!! Chabad is welcoming.
@Corvairwild - There are Mexican Jews. In fact, there are Jews all over the Americas. Many, of course, fled pogroms and Nazis prior to WWII. The mayor of Los Angeles, Eric Garcetti, is a Mexican Jew. His mother's people were Jews from Hungary who ended up in Mexico and his father's people were Italians who ended up in Mexico, so he has an Italian name, Jewish religion, and Mexican national traditions. Pati Jinich, the internationally known chef from PBS fame, is a Mexican Jew, as is her husband. Their families both landed in Mexico after escaping fascism in Europe 4-5 generations ago now. They live in the D.C. area.
We always invited my non Jewish Neighbors with my family it was so much fun, if the children at Sedar answered a question they got a prize. I miss this so much it's a sad time of year for me.
Hi, Miriam, I love your channel! Thank you for all that you do. I am curious why the Seder is the night before Passover begins and how the holiday is observed during the duration of the week. Thank you for educating me!!
Thank you so much for sharing. I truly enjoy learning about Jewish customs/traditions. I am a Christian that feels it is very important to learn about Judaism.
Some ultra Orthodox Jews don't have any flowers in their home for passover. So if ur going to an ultra Orthodox family, safest bet is no flowers.....or any other food/drink cuz there r alotta rules
I'll be in DC the day Passover starts and am so lost on what to do, and how to celebrate this year. I'm a convert and have no family to celebrate with. My Rabbi and community are in Illinois. Thoughts?
Hey Marion! I just adore your videos! You are fun and informative. I am a Christian. I attended a Seder about 15 yrs ago, but the family was not religious, so they skipped a lot of the ceremonious parts. I would LOVE to attend one now as a mature adult. I live in NC and there's not a Jew to be found near me! I am sure that in the larger towns and cities I can find a temple. What do you think? I don't think Jews would want a Christian attending their Seder, especially one they don't know. Any ideas? Thank you!!!
Thank you so much! That's actually exactly why I made my Haggadah this year to avoid all the confusion and skipping around. I think you're in a tough position because groups like Chabad and the JCC do host community seders but I would imagine they are for Jewish people, it's worth asking them though! Best of luck!!
That’s weird. I’m Christian and I was invited to a Seder back in 2013. It’s was wonderful! Many of my Jewish friends keep it original regardless of who is there and they have always invited their non Jewish friends and family to enjoy it. I love going to them. Even my church allowed it to be held by Jewish friends of the church.
Your adorable as you explain what goes on at our Saders. Except, you didn't explain why we have a Passover Sader. And what's on the sader plate and it's meaning. This is very important to understand by anyone who attends one. Especially if you don't want them to start eating from the sader plate before there suppose to in the service. It can cause imbarrassing situation.. 😇
Seder means order. The same things have to be done on both nights. In our family we usually do a regular long seder and a shorter more concise seder. The difference is the songs sung, the amount of commentary. There is no definite first night or second night is longer or shorter. Depending on the day. Whether Shabbos, that changes what is said.
@Corvairwild - Marian discusses these in her videos, so look up the appropriate ones from among what she has listed as still available on UA-cam. Just FYI. They are diaspora distinctions among Jews and how their traditions developed.
I remember going to a Seder back in 2013 and it’s was so fun. It was at our church being held by Jewish (by birth) members (who are Christian) I loved it. It was beautifully done.
@@littlehellkitten9682 no it’s not. Nothing wrong with joining those who are ethnically Jewish and they want to keep their culture regardless of their faith. It was wonderful. Don’t look for a problem when there isn’t one.
@@littlehellkitten9682 again, you don’t get it. Being ETHNICALLY Jewish is different than just having the faith!! 🤦🏻♀️ There is nothing wrong with practicing your culture that you were born with! You make Judaism sound so snobby and close minded. I have ALOT of Jewish friends and they invite their non Jewish friends and family to do Seder EVERY YEAR!! So don’t tell them that they aren’t right. Who gave you the authority to tell ppl what is acceptable within the Jewish faith? NOONE not even God Himself. So do yourself a favor, and just get off your high horse, sit down and learn some humility. You actually might make friends. You have a lot of growing up to do.
