- Maria Callas sings "Grausamer!"
from Parsifal by Richard Wagner (1813-1883), sung in Italian

Roma 20./21.XI.1950
And then, I sat in on a rehearsal with Maestro Serafin. You know, it was Parsifal and I was supposed to see if I do one of the flowers. I didn't. And she sing that music. In Italian of course. And he tell her this and he tell her that and little by little this voice had all the nature in it - the forest and the magic castle and hatred that is love. And little by little she not fat with bad skin and rich-husband-asleep-in-the-corner, she witch who burn you by standing there.
Maestro Serafin he say to me afterwards, you know now something about Parsifal. I say, no Maestro. I know much more. I know how to study. And I know that we are more than voices. We are spirit, we are god when we sing, if we mean it. (Renata Scotto on Maria Callas)
This is the best Kundry I have ever heard! So much anger and pain she conveys. Callas is still and will always be my icon. I love the Wagner singers of the past, but never thought Callas would get a grasp on me in this rep, but WOW, she certainly did. She sounds like it doesn't cost her anything to sing this demanding role, and that with so much emotion!
FANTASTIQUE ET INIMITABLE ET QUEL CAST
She’s a wonderful Kundry. She had those resonant low notes like very few other sopranos had. And her top is spot on, clean, even. I think Wagner would have loved her.
Callas had a colossal voice before her dramatic weight loss. To me, her voice was beautiful to the end. But it's at its most beautiful here.
Anyone who can sing Wagner and Bellini is the rarest of the rare. And during her earliest year, Callas can sing everything written for the female voice except perhaps the Queen of the Night arias.
I can't say this is the best Kundry I've ever heard because I am not a fan of this opera. I only came to hear this because I love Callas' art. She is La Divina.
Callas was asked many times to sing Queen of the Night--and she could have done it--but turned it down because it was such a "small" role.
I believe Wagner himself said that his operas should be sung like those of Bellini whom he had a lot of admiration for
@@onkelgreifenklau belcanto training paves the way for singing Wagner as well.
The singers who initially sang Wagner's roles had all been trained in and sung in the bel canto approach because that was the main method of teaching singing in the first half of the 19th Century. The bel canto composers were writing for large voices [particlarly the dramatic roles such as Beatrice di Tenda, Lucia, Norma]. These were the voices that Wagner could bring his music to life as well.
She would have nailed Queen of the Night, especially the coloratura parts. She was not a fan of the opera I think.
Callas in this wagnerian role is simply magnificent, beyond awesome !!!
The lines were so intense.
her low powerful register in this opera is incredible, sepulcrar
almost contralto like.
Damn I used to think this was the worst opera ever written. But Callas makes it sound amazing.
Interesting. I was never much of a Wagner fan, but at some point I listened to Parsifal and it really got under my skin. It's now on my short list of the greatest operas.
I think it's important to remember that Callas was 24 y/o when she sang this part. Has there been anyone else to sing with this degree of maturity and musical intelligence at this age (or any age for that matter)?
She sings the hell outta this aria, or as she would put it: like a wild cat!
She has the most dramatic expression in her voice. Nobody is comparable to her.
@@helbiglilian3 It's true. There will never be another Callas.
This is stupendous! First-rate.
This is amazing.
Fantastica, Divina! Aveva la voce adatta anche per il repertorio wagneriano.
Come Kundry forse... Brunhilde e Isolde sono altra cosa.
The sound is incrédible!!!❤
Even more incredible that this is the ONLY complete Callas opera recording by RAI during her 'reign' in Italy, from 1947 - 1962.
how suited was this music for her. Or how she suited herself to this music!
Is her complete Parsifal available? Anyone know?
It is, from a live concert performance in 1950
🖤
Magnificent. Too bad it wasn't sung in the original German. Too bad as well that Cheryl Studer never sang the role. I think hers could have been a most special Kundry. For me, the best remains Martha Mödl.
Martha Modl was amazing. This is why I say Calla was not a Wagnerian singer, had she been so she would have insisted on being the best, as with the rest of her repetoire.
I don't think Cheryl Studer would have been a good Kundry...
@@WotanKlingsor I think she may have been but that’s just my opinion. But we will never know.
The best Kundry is by far Kirsten Flagstad. Ludwig, Varnay and Callas do a fine job as well. Mödl didn’t have enough metal in her voice (especially at the top) imo.
Harshaw was a fine Kundry.
Shye also does a super "Liebestodt"
However much we love Maria, I really feel that her voice before or after weight loss was not suited to Wagner. She seemed to be working at it all the time, instead in the Italian operas she was comfortable, fluent and enchanting, the true artist performing with the greatest voice ever. Maria changed the face of opera, her dramatic voice, her sweet voice, her fun loving voice in the various roles she played, made us believe who she was depicting. We never saw Maria Callas on stage, we only saw Tosca, Norma and so on. In Wagner I saw Maria trying to convince mw who she was playing. I am sure many will disagree with me, but this is as I saw her.
You need glasses
I respect your opinion -- BTW, have you listened to any of Callas' recordings of the Liebestod?
I like her fine!
CALLAS IST MUSIK GESCHICHTE...DU NICHT!
Es ist abgekürzt.
