The USS Texas is not only the 'oldest dreadnought' in the world, it is the ONLY one of that class remaining.

Being fair here, there *were* only two of her class ever built, so it's not all that surprising to be the only one left.
Now, the fact that we decommissioned, and then scrapped, the entire "standard type" battle-fleet, most of which were built *significantly* after Texas, but kept this one because we were the *only* state with both enough money, and enough TEXAS, Fuck Yeah! *is* still somewhat surprising.

My Grandpa served on on this ship through the entirety of the war. He was one of the radarmen. He passed away last year. I got to visit the ship with him twice.

On D-Day, the Texas also fired smoke shells, designed to hide allied invasion infantry. Colonel James Rudder was hit with one, but because it was a smoke shell, he didn't die. He was just very, very yellow.

USS Texas is not just the only surviving battleship but the ONLY battleship that fought at Operation Torch, D-Day, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa! 4 of the greatest amphibious landings of all time involved USS Texas!!! I seriously cannot believe that the Navy and Ike chose the ancient USS Texas out of all the battleships, including modern fast battleships, in the world to cover Omaha Beach on D-Day, LMAO! The USS Nevada was more modern yet was assigned to Utah Beach, which turned out to be a cakewalk. Texas and the even older battleship Arkansas were the heaviest and most state-of-the-art artillery guns at Omaha Beach!!!
Also, Texas was the only Allied ship to be at General Quarters for 50 days straight during WWII. She did this during the Okinawa campaign. Her captain was a genius but the men all had to relieve themselves in buckets and receive their K-rations in cleaned out buckets for 50 days! Texas is one of the most epic ships of all time. Here's hoping she will always be available as a museum ship.
In 2012 I worked at a steel plate mill about 20 miles away, and heard the discussions about the state doing major repairs to the ship. I stopped by and asked if we could donate some plates for the repairs. The ranger said they occasionally got pieces from local fabricators and would be happy if we had a few pieces. I said you don't understand, how many truck loads do you need?
She looked stunned, then got her boss on the phone. We ended up supplying 80,000 pounds, mostly lighter thicknesses, under 1" thick. Got to meet the lieutenant governor.

My company and I donated the lubrication systems for the old pumps and all of the newer pumps, as well. Good for ya’ll, man. We should all do our part.

As for the flooding of one side of the ship, I understand the Texas's captain found that the Nazis had purposely stationed several of their Panzer tanks where they thought they would be out of range of the Texas's main guns. They got a surprise of the lives when they were completely smashed by the Texas as the flooding had elevated Texas's guns and increased their range by several additional miles.

That was the maximum range of the Texas's main guns. Flooding the compartments away from the shore increased its effective range of their main batteries by several miles. The Germans thought they had outwitted the US Navy, they were wrong.
I am 85 years old and had a brother who was 14 years older than I. He was a platoon Sergeant who landed on Omaha beach with his platoon. He told me that as he stood on the foredeck of the troop ship that he was on, he could look just past the bow of the ship to the right and see the front of the Texas s it bombarded the shore. He said that it was very comforting. He also said that if he hadn't had the responsibility of his younger men he would have been tempted to hide behind wreckage. Omaha was hell.

My Dad enlisted in the US Navy in 1937 and was initially assigned to the USS Texas for training. Always said it was the most fun he'd had while he was in. He was injured on the USS Lexington at the Battle of the Coral Sea, spent time in the Naval Hospital at Balboa, Panama and discharged in 1942. Amazing that old Battle wagon has outlived the men who served on her. RIP Dad, Texas is still afloat.

Iwas born in Channelview Texas I am 53 I grew up playing in the belly of this battleship It is on display at the San Jacinto battlegrounds We used it as our own personal playground I've been everywhere that you're not supposed to be.

When I was 13 and in the boy scouts my scout troop got to spend the weekend on board cleaning the ship and polishing all the brass fixtures . We had a blast going through every nook and cranny of the ship from the towers to steering and sleeping in the crews bunks I'm 60 now and it's so sad to see her in that condition. Texas Parks and Wildlife should be ashamed of themselves.

I was born and raised in Houston. I remember my father taking my brother and I there many, many, times in the 1970's. I also remember going to the San Jacinto Monument, and the Sea Wolf submarine.
Gary Williamson They can only do what they have funds to do. So many don’t realize how much it costs to keep even a dock ship maintained. When maintenance doesn’t get done (due to lack of funding) the repairs are often far more expensive than the original maintenance would have been. The Texas is currently beginning a $35 million refurbishment, but other plans for more permanent solutions have been put on hold. The North Carolina has gone through tough times in a few occasions too, but is in pretty good shape at present. All four Iowa class battleships were fairly recently (within the past 10-15 years or so) concerted from reserve to museum ship status and are likely to need some rather expensive upkeep in the not too distant future. I would hate to see any of these (or other) historical landmarks lost, but, sadly, I suspect it is not that far off.

My grandfather told me about this ship when he was working in the Brooklyn NAVY yard during World War Two and how the ship came in for repairs with a giant shell that struck it but failed to detonate on the top deck.
USS Texas was seriously a lucky ship. Almost scrapped twice during the 1930s but a smart admiral had a hunch that the Battleship Fleet would get wiped out (and he was correct) in a freak sneak attack so ancient battleships like Texas should stay in reserve just in case. That shell would have caused so much damage and killed many sailors if it had exploded. The greatest what-if is her having to fight an Axis big ship in a naval duel. We got to see her fighting against those 4 German big guns at Cherbourg in an artillery duel and she suffered 1 killed while she was able to destroy one of those big guns. The Germans were so accurate that they killed the helmsman of USS Texas and the Captain luckily stepped out of the bridge for a second or that would have been a really bad catastrophe.

Fun fact, I play World of Warships like Drachinifel does and last year (after years of spamming them with emails and in their surveys they sent out) I helped get the company that makes World of Warships to do the save the USS Texas event. They did exactly what I requested including donating the cost of the Texas ship to the USS Texas foundation and also make a special camo for the event. I believe I was one of many trying to help, but we raised $150,000! It was crazy, the first weekend you had rich players buying Texas' for the poorer players they didn't even know just to pour money into the event. It was amazing.
I too, play WoWs, and also bought her for the preservation. My first premium ship. I was born in Corpus Christi. Also an Army Gulf War vet. As a Texan, and vet, I hope this incredible piece of history is preserved for future generations.
I have not been to an American warship museum, but saving our mighty Demonic naval killing machines is very important. I hope Texas, North Carolina, and the Iowa's continue to be restored for hundreds of years to come.
This is still one of the most iconic ships, and personally, my favorite among the retired ships of the USN. Even over the Mighty Mo. Ive done several reports on this ships for school, I've visited it more than 3 times, lived less than a few miles away from it, and of course, played plenty of games in it in online games. This ship is and will remain my favorite ship of all time.

It is incredible when you think about how the grandpa named USS Texas would have likely stayed in reserve and never serve in WWII if Pearl Harbor didn't happen. Whomever decided to not mothball and scrap Texas in 1939-41 was a genius. That admiral knew that a Pearl Harbor-level catastrophe was likely going to happen.
The last dreadnought battleship and the last battleship of the Grand Fleet, it needs to be saved. I hope one day I get to see it. I was disappointed when I saw the rust damage on the USS North Carolina.
On May 28, 2019, it was reported that the Texas would be undergoing $35 million worth of repairs and then be moved further up the Texas coast.
IDK about "up the coast". Some have suggested down the coast, though, to maybe Galveston or maybe Corpus Christi where the Lexington is already on display.

@@rustyshackleford6069 The state of Texas approved $35 million dollar restoration project a couple years ago.
They are going to have to build a new one movie prop style for display. the ship is completely rusted out and has no structure left below the water line and just above. It takes huge pumps and many patches just to float it. It will collapse on its self without major work.
A follow-up on the efforts to preserve the ship. Initially the plan was to seal off the aft end of the slip that it's in and pump out the water comverting it to a permanent dry dock. This would spare the hull from the ravages of the brackish water of the Houston Ship Channel as well as the chemical and petrochemical exposure it suffered from owing to the heavily industrial nature of the channel.
But, in the end it was all going to be far too expensive and, ultimately, it wouldn't have addressed a major problem this museum ship has always faced: an insufficient number of visitors.
Why you ask? Because the location is, quite frankly, awful. It's in a highly induatrial area that has only gotten worse in the 70-plus years since the ship was placed there. Despite a quadrupling of the metro population in that same time the ship has never been able to attract enough paying visitors to become self-sufficient.
Why then, did you folks put it in such a stupid location? The answer is that the location is actually the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site which is the location of the final historic battle where the Texas Republic defeated the Mexican army and won its independence from Mexico. In addition to the USS Texas there's a massive 173 meter tall monument with an observation deck and a history museum located in the base. Otherwise the battleground isn't much to look at...it's a flat marshy area devoid of any real topography. But, you can understand how it all kind of makes sense given the history of the location. Still...it's a pain in the ass to get out there and it's less than pretty.
So now there's a new plan. The Texas Legislature has approved $35 million to repair the USS Texas. She's going to be floated out and towed to Mobile, AL where she'll be placed in a floating dry dock and all the major work performed. And here's the catch: once repaired she will not be returned to the San Jacinto site. The funding was contingent upon the ship being relocated somewhere along the northern Texas Gulf coast which everyone takes to mean Galveston, TX which is a huge tourist destination with over 7.5 million visitors each year. It's believed that this will provide the ship with its best chance to become economically self-sufficient instead of constantly having to rely on stop-gap and emergency funding from a Legislature that's only in session once every two years (Texans are notoriously wary of government so the state constitution limits how often they can meet...the idea being that if they can't meet they can't mess things up, LOL).
So that's where we stand. The ship will be fully repaired and we're just waiting for the site selection folks to formally say "Galveston".
Although I'm sure the folks in La Porte, TX will be disappointed the fact is they've had over 70 years to make this work accompanied by a quadrupling of the metro Houston population to almost 7 million and yet it's been a resounding failure. It would be insanity to put her back there. Relocating her is absolutely the right decision. This view is supported by a Deloitte study. As the Houston Chronicle reported, "Cyrier and other supporters of moving the battleship have cited an economic study prepared by Deloitte that shows a potential windfall if it were to move to Galveston.
The 17-page report, commissioned by the Battleship Texas Foundation and completed in September 2016, projects 283,000 visitors to the battleship in Galveston and $3 million in annual revenue, compared to 88,000 annual visitors and $1.3 million at its La Porte location.
The Galveston projection would put the Battleship Texas on par with attendance figures for similar World War II-era museum ships, such as the USS Lexington in Corpus Christi (306,000 annual visitors) and the USS Alabama in Mobile, Ala. (277,000 annual visitors)."
Including the latest $35 million appropriation the State of Texas has spent $54 million on the USS Texas since 2009. That is an enormous amount of money. The ship has to go where it at least has a chance to become self-sufficient if it's to survive. The folks in Harris County bitching about the proposed relocation and vowing to fight it seriously need to STFU. It's like...stop, you're just embarrassing yourselves, you and your constituents have utterly failed this historic treasure and you need to step out of the way and give someone else a chance to make this work...because clearly you can't.
I saw the Texas when i was about 9 and have been worried on what was going to happen to it over the last couple of years. Glad to see it is being taken care of. And I am 63 now.

A few inaccuracies here:
First, the $35m is on top of the $54m the State has spent on the ship since 2009. The $54m went mostly towards structural repairs and pump upgrades. The $35m recently appropriated is new money.
As far as being towed to Mobile and ending up in Galveston, none of that has been decided on yet. The Battleship Texas Foundation is still taking bids from a variety of places. Galveston is probably out of the running, because they want to place her at Seawolf Park and BTF doesn't want that. Baytown and Kemah right now are the leading candidates, but obviously that could change.
I seem to be cursed when it comes to getting a tour of the Texas, when I was young we were going to visit; heavy rains closed all tours for a week.
When I was in high school I tried again and missed out due to the museum being closed for repairs, the same thing happened in college.
4 years ago I heard of the conditions it was in, and have been appalled at what was allowed to happen to a magnificent piece of history.
Hopefully, she will get her home finally settled and since I now work in the Houston area a lot I can go visit...
Especially considering one of my mother's side served on her during the Great War.

My dad was stationed on the Texas during the end of the 1930’s. One time when they were firing the main guns he was walking by the Onion locker. The hatch was open and when they fired the main guns the onions blew apart and it was like an instant blizzard all around him.

Frankly: The Americans are lucky to have so many of their battleships left for education of future generations. The Brits have scrapped ALL of their dreadnoughts. And when we Germans in the seventies got the offer from Turkey to get back the battlecruiser Goeben as a museum ship our politicians said: "Screw it guys! We don't want to be reminded of our past." So the Turks scrapped it.

I used to ridicule the HMS Victory for being in a drydock as opposed to the USS Constitution which is still afloat, but a while back, learning about the state of the Texas completely changed my mind on the use of permanent drydocking of historic ships. Personally I think that being afloat is the best place for a ship as it is their natural home, but there are sooooooooooooo many issues that presents to the point where I now will ridicule myself for being so obtuse in my younger days.
edit: Walking the deck of the Victory is near the top of my list of things to do before I die, as it would just be awesome to know that I walked the deck of both her and the Constitution.
As a part of the historical tall ship community, I can tell you that these ships need constant maintenance - they are living things in that way. Floating is nice but more expensive, and if they don't get the care they need they will rot away and sink. Active and sailing is the best of all, because they have to be kept in sailing condition and active means an engaged pool of volunteers and revenue. But the fuel costs to run a battleship make that prohibitively costly. Dry berth it is.
The issue with victory is its like triggers broom( google trigger only fool and horses) it’s original but has had 5 new handles and 3 new brush heads.

Sailed passed her a couple of times when I was a young cadet on the Gas Carrier Maersk Sussex in the late 90's on the way to the ITC terminal next door to her. I wish I had visited her for a look about rather than concentrating on beers etc.

I actually spent a few days on the USS Massachusetts as a boyscout. It was a great time and I can distinctly remember the smells and tight sleeping conditions. I did spend some time playing with the anti aircraft guns and aimed them at a near by bridge. Hoping someone left some ammo in them. Lol. Anyways we in Massachusetts take good care of our ww2 battleship. But the Texas is a shame, such a beautiful ship. Thanks for this video!
As of the 26th of March, 2020 three permits have been granted to begin repairs on the Texas, and funding provided by the Texas legislature. The maintenance of the ship has been transferred from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Dept on a 99 year lease to the Battleship Texas Foundation. She was supposed to be moved sometime this April through August to begin complete replacement of the hull below the water line before being berthed in a new dock and re-opened for visitors in 2022 or so.
That may be on a bit of a hold. 14" guns are no match for a 120 nanometer virus it seems.
Glad to hear at least this is getting some movement on it rather than nothing at all.
I'm sure there will be a bit of a delay to this, given the current situation, but I'm very glad to hear that this will be happening this year. I took my now 82-year-old dad on the Hardhat Tour of the Texas about 15 years ago, as a gift for Father's Day. We both came away with a whole new appreciation and respect for the men that served on this ship and others.
the goo news is that the Texas made it to mobile and was put in to a dry dock before the virus so the situation for the ship is not getting rapidly worse.

I really appreciate your video. I live near the USS Texas, one thing that might help you understand why the Texas fell into such disrepair is where the ship has been located. The San Jacinto/Bay town is that there is not a lot of people that live in that area compared to Houston Tx. Only about 80 thousand people see it a year, and the ship only makes about 800K a year, but it requires 2 million a year to maintain. Texas Appropriated $85 million in order for the ship to get repaired. They are planning on towing the ship to Mobile Alabama or to a shipyard in Louisiana which posses significant risks to the ship. There are talk of moving the USS Texas to a dock in Galveston or to Corpus Christi where it would be next to the USS Lexington. Both of those locations would provide more tourists that could see the ship then were it is currently located.
Considering the USS Texas served with the Royal Navy in World War One, it is the only surviving Dreadnaught member of the British Grand Fleet. All other dreadnoughts from that period were either scrapped in peacetime or sunk in combat during the Second World War between 1920 and 1958. The colorful history of this vessel serving in 2 navies justifies it preservation. It is a costly venture but worth the effort.

Don't mess with Texas! This ship bombarded the "Atlantic Wall" at Normandy. When limitation on gun elevation was limiting the range and targets further inland had to be taken out, her resourceful commander had compartments flooded on one side of the ship to deliberately induce a list and hence raise the gun barrels. Don't know what effect this had on her fire control "computer" if we can use that term, but in any event they did manage to rain Hell on those targets, or at least hamper any Germans attempting to reinforce the shore positions.
The "Mighty T" is the only dreadnaught remaining. We're working on it here in the Lone Star State. Great vid. Ty.

@@leary4 USS Olympia is from 1892, and HMS Dreadnought was from 1906 (Royal Navy was the leading and by far the largest navy at the time as US Navy is today). USS Olympia is a predreadnought. The building of HMS Dreadnought pretty much rendered ships like USS Olympia obsolete.

The modern Mexican Navy and Air Force are not very impressive, and their main mission is supporting the Army, which is the most impressive branch of the Mexican Armed Forces, and obviously the Mexican Armed Forces is not the most impressive Armed Forces in the Western Hemisphere. But, the Mexican Armed Forces as a whole shouldn't be dismissed, because of one very important detail: it is made up entirely of professionals. Every single member of the Mexican Armed Forces made a choice to join the Mexican Armed Forces as their lifetime career. If you pick a fight with the Mexican Armed Forces you will not be facing a bunch of conscripts, but a bunch of career professionals.

The Mexican Navy is made up of PT boats and they have a few Destroyers that are about the same size as a US Coast Guard Cutter, which are QUITE old, because they bought them from us after we decommissioned them. Their Army wont even come up with the Cajones to go after the Cartels. Do you ever hear of Cartels in the US? I live in Arizona and there is no such thing. Our violence is spill over from Mexico because they can't control the Cartels. 2 groups of Navy SEAL's and 2 Groups of Army Rangers and 1 Platoon of Marines could probably do more damage to the Cartels than the entire Mexican Army.
Many years ago my father worked with a man who said he was stationed aboard a tug (one of two) assigned to the Texas on D-Day.
He said that during the height of the bombardment, both tugs were going flat out trying to keep the Texas in position because the recoil from the guns kept pushing it out to sea.

Well, the US has had its share of historical ships scrapped, most notably the carrier USS Enterprise CV-6. She is the most decorated US ship ever. Enterprise escorted Hornet toward the Japanese coast for the Doolittle Raid since Hornet's own fighters were stuck below while her deck was covered with bombers. Enterprise dive bombers were vital in helping sink the Japanese carriers at Midway. After Hornet was sunk at Santa Cruz, it was basically a battered Enterprise vs Japan for a long several months until the new Essex and Independence classes came online. She is credited with sinking or damaging 35 vessels and shooting down 185 aircraft. After several failed attempts to save her, in 1958 she was scrapped.

The USS Texas is near my home. It has and will continue to be a favorite place to visit. It is parked at the historic San Jacinto battle ground where Texas won its independence from Mexico.
USS Texas suffers from a system of failures from organizations that really had no idea how to maintain a museum ship. Average people look at a battleship as indestructible from nature. When the exact opposite is true. So, she was allowed to sit in her murky muddy berth for years before citizens started raising the alarm that something needs to be done before she is lost.
USS Texas has a great volunteer support crew that are working together with Texas Parks and Wildlife to restore and prepare the ship for a dry berth. These men have been painstakingly restoring details such as the anti-aircraft guns (as a kid, my brother and I would operate them, turning and raising the weapons on unsuspecting commercial aircraft flying overhead).
I am glad to see this video, and I hope it helps to raise more awareness of the true needs of a museum ship and our flagship receives the support of the citizens of our great state. Btw, my family home is nearly within range of her 14" main guns.
I too live near her and would pass by all the time on the ship channel. To this day we still hear someone on occasion at night on the radio calling for that ship outbound at Lynchburg. They mistake her mast light as an active ship. I remember going all the way to the top of her and all the way to the bottom as a child.

I agree completely with you, it pisses me off that the State of Texas, more specifically Texas Parks & Wildlife (TP&W), have let her get in such bad condition! I am proud to be a Texan. I have never had cause to be ashamed of Texas or being a native Texan through my nearly 50 years. For 70 years she has stood proudly bow towards the San Jacinto Monument. As if she is watching over and protecting where Texas began, the Monument itself and the people of Texas! The slogan "Dont mess with Texas" comes to mind.
What has happened to her is despicable and it is primarily TP&W"s fault. However, in their defense the state funding is not there and hasn't been for many years. Her visitor funding barely keeps the lights on so to speak. No one comes to see her no one can afford to fix her, so she just sits there and slowly dies. This is not just a tragedy to the State of Texas but also to the United States. However the Battleship Texas Foundation battleshiptexas.org/ is and has been doing great things to help keep her afloat, quite literally! She is now closed to the public so she can be taken to Alabama and dry docked for much needed hull repairs. The BTF has done wonderful things with her repair, up keep and additions. They are to be commended in the highest order for their efforts. All volunteer's by the way. If you can support the BTF please do, she needs all the help she can get before its too late! I am in no way affiliated with any organization. I am just a Texan who doesn't want to see a piece of naval history, state history and beautiful landmark scraped.

Being a ardent student of naval history, having served with pride in the United States Navy, and being a proud Texan, I have long loved our battleship and long awaited this video. While you did your usual outstanding job, it is heartbreaking to me to hear truly proclaimed for the world to hear the state of the USS Texas. I’m writing our awesome Governor today. USS Texas will close on August 28 to begin the long awaited repairs on the old Battlewagon.
A quick update on the ship: She is being moved to a shipyard nearby to commence repairs. The ship is going to be transported via a floating dry dock. After the repairs, I believe the ship will be looking for a new home. There has been some talk about to moving the ship to the Galveston Naval Museum at Seawolf Park where the USS Stewart (DE- 238) and USS Cavalla (SS-244) are set up. The park itself is a memorial to the USS Seawolf (SS-197) that was lost during WW2. The current spot the ship is in, was once a peaceful area. Now its surrounded by refinery plants and in a busy shipping lane. However, moving It to Seawolf Park, seems like a fitting place for her to be at, as she will be amongst fellow ships of war.
Right now, I pass the ship everyday, on my way to work,. It's a very intimidating looking ship. As a kid our school used to take field trips to the ship. Oddly enough, we do confined space training on the ship. I am happy to see it go, because the area its in isn't really peaceful . Again, its smack in the middle of refineries, and she deserves to spend her retirement years in peace. Where people can appreciate her again, I hope she finds a good, deserving home.

Because USA always fight with quantity. I mean.. In every war, they don't use tactics (Yeah they use tactics. It is just not really depending on tactic). They always use their quantity.
That's why some ships are specialise on different role.
They always move in a big fleet. Soo the issue about USS Texas only have 2 AA guns is not really a problem. There will be some nearby ships that specialized on AA.

Plus in this case, the weird claim is easily debunked by pointing out there was no such thing as a dedicated AA cruiser.
It was the time when aircraft were so new it was not a factor of consideration.
It would be another four years after Texas was ordered, before the very first time air power was used offensively when German zeppelins bombed military targets around Luik in Belgium in 1914.
And as was learned in 1914 and 1915, having an airship made of 90% highly flammable gases will shorten your lifespan considerably. Half of airships were lost with a 40% attrition rate for crews, which easily made it the most deadly branch of service.
The first succesful use of airpower was later in 1914 when the English managed to hit a giant zeppelin hanger and disable a zeppelin.
In december 1914 the first terrorbombing of civilian targets was carried out by the French attack on Freiburg am Breisgau.
It would be untill 1917 that airpower actually became effective, with German strategic bombing striking ports and factory districts.
But as any pilot will tell you, "Hit anything within these 12 postal codes" and "Hit this moving, turning battleship" are very different things.
So was Texas bad for having 2 AA guns ordered by 1910? No, that was actually quite sufficient armament to face anything that airpower had succesfully pulled off at that point.
The US did have dedicated AA cruisers. The Cleveland Class and Atlanta Class Light Crusiers were converted to carry dual 5-inch heavy AA guns and Bofors 40mm guns in dual and quad mounts. These guns were also mounted on the Fletcher and Allen M Sumner Class destroyers

So to throw in some information, I've been a part of the team working on dryberthing the Texas, and I can tell you some of the clusterfuck surrounding the project if you want.
The ship just finished 50 million dollars in repairs, mostly funded by the Texas Congress. There is still another 25 million to go before they believe she is strong enough to sit in dry berth. There also are no existing berths in Houston large enough for her anymore since the one she was last at was damaged in a hurricane. The new berth will have to be built from scratch where she lies which complicates things. This in no way excuses the abuse and neglect of the BTC and lack of funds until now, but she is in the rise for now.
This ship is too precious to quantify in $s . Pay what it needs, you can't recreate once it's gone!

@@BreechBangClear This is the price for keeping any naval vessel as a museum in the water. Putting her in dry berth will significantly reduce the need for these capital projects. And she is not just some rust bucket, she is the last dreadnaught left, had the 2nd longest continuous service period of an American BB, and had one of the most unique service histories out there.

If I may, I would like to post a headline from the Houston Post newspaper dated June 3, 2019. "The Houston Chronicle reports that Battleship Texas will move from its home on the Houston Ship Channel near La Porte as part of a plan to preserve the historic ship and draw more visitors
" The article further states that the Battleship Texas will be taken to Alabama for repairs. One of the plans is to put it in dry dock upon its return to Texas. God bless Texas.

You left a couple of fun facts out of the story about the Captain of the USS Texas putting then-cub reporter Walter Cronkite on a plane enabling him to scoop the reporter aboard the faster USS Massachusetts and launch his journey toward becoming "The Most Trusted Man in America". Walter Cronkite was born and raised in Houston, Texas and attended the University of Texas. The story is that much better when you take into account that a good old boy from Texas got the assist from the Captain and crew of the ship named after his home state. Great video nonetheless. Bruce Bartman He came to Kansas City on a book tour, I grew up watching Cronkite and was very excited to go to a book signing and hear a talk about his life. Being a Vietnam vet I sat in stunned silence listening to what came out of that old mans mouth. I got up and left, if I hadn't already bought the book I would have just left but I have never read it. I learned everything I needed to know about that old commie listening to him.
I graduated high school in Dallas, Texas and shortly thereafter had the opportunity to visit the Texas. Overwhelmed and awed hardly describe my impressions then. In the early '70's it was still possible to get as deep as the engine room where the huge pistons and rods towered over me. There was standing water there then. In the late '80's my brother and I, on a business visit to the state, visited again. We were told that it was no longer safe to go as deeply into the hull as the engine room. I have not kept up with the ship's life since and this comes as a terrible reminder of the mortality of steel in constant contact with salt water. I hope they do some about this. It is a tragedy waiting to happen. The Olympia is still afloat so it can be done. On a different tangent I regularly curse the state of Oregon for it's shortsitedness. At least my uncle's ship, Alabama, is in great shape hurricane or no hurricane. Almost the worst thing that happen to a museum ship is a politician. I give you Warspite, Enterprise and Vanguard. This ship is legendary because it is a WWI and a WWII Veteran Battleship.
I saw the picture of USS Texas a few years ago with a severe list from a hull breach. I wrote to the governor's office about that, telling them that Texans should NEVER have to see such a thing again. If a permanent drydock is the answer, then that's what needs to happen. Back in 1990, while attending a family dinner in San Leon, I witnessed the battleship being towed down the bay to Galveston for her refit. She was a magnificent sight... but no one of us realized that she was in imminent danger of sinking! Texas remains the only dreadnought style battleship left in existence and the second oldest such vessel in the world. If the Japanese can preserve an ancient pre-dreadnought like HIJMS Mikasa in good condition, we can do no less with Texas. Another such consideration is the scandalous condition of the famous cruiser USS Olympia in Philadelphia.
Steven Pilling while I understand the sentiment and whole heartedly agree, I don’t think the Mikasa is the best example of good condition since it’s been gutted and encased in concrete. Preserved for the most part yes, but maintains what’s left is all that really can be done for the mikasa, if even that.

Mikasa was in pretty rotten shape before a British engineer made it his project to restore and preserve the ship as well as could be achieved, given her condition and previous commercialized abuse. It's understandable that a British man would take up this challenge. Mikasa was actually built in Britain. It's not only a patriotic relic for Japan, but a paen to the maritime technology in which Britain then led the world.

I have good news, the Texas is going into dry dock this summer in an unidentified shipyard in Louisiana, also the ship is now in possession of the Battleship Texas foundation.
I'm 55.5 years old. I looked it up the history of the ship because as a kid I visited this ship twice. I walked the deck and through the ship and had the tour. I was young and dumb and asked "why are the guns plugged up"? Duh!!!!?? I know now. Thanks to this video I know the history of the only ship I've ever been on. And you have too! Congrats! we may have crossed paths.......

I've watched a number of his videos with that logo. This one has been the shortest, I think, and I am glad he puts more time into them.
It takes that long to cover a ship like that, think of the history.

Living very close to the Battleship Texas, I can tell you she is a beautiful ship. They have great volunteers working on the old girl, but she does need to spend some more serious time in dry dock, and hopefully a dry birth soon after. This has been by far one of the best documentaries I have ever seen on the Texas. You did a spectacular job of telling the story of the Texas sir. Thank you so much.
As someone who has explored Texas firsthand, I am really glad that the job is finally getting done.
I'm currently building a 1:700 scale replica of her, replete with all the proper paints & aftermarket goodies (photo etch details, wood deck veneer, brass barrels, ect.) showing her after her Nov. of '44 refit.
As always, you've done her justice, Mr. Drachinifel !!
