In this video, I will share with you how I froze my fingers to sew this TV show skirt! Inspired by the beautifully tailored 1930's clothing on "All Creatures Great and Small", I set out to sew my version of one of Helen's skirts. Join me for all of the pitfalls and disasters along the way, including losing heat in my cold Canadian studio and hence freezing my fingers to complete this!

Creatures Great and Small. It has been one of my fav swries in a long time❤ Even our 22 year old watches it.
The other day I ran across two young ladies at a chic café. Everyone seemed drawn to them and looked at them admiringly. It dawned on me that the reason why was because they were not only beautiful but were dressed in skirts from another era down to their shoes and hair. It felt like a throw back to when men and women cared about their manner of dress. It seems like the only time some choose to 'dress up' today is to go to church or some function. It has really incentivized me to pull out my skirts from the nineties and wear them even to the grocery store. It isn't about flaunting but just taking a little more care. It says so much about us as a ppl.
Love this comment so much, I couldn’t agree more!
I love "All Creatures Great and Small," too - especially Helen's clothes. I want all her sweaters! Your skirt came out so beautifully, and it looks wonderful on you.
Thank you so much!
I was lucky enough to find a treadle sewing machine at my local antique store! Not very long after I began my sewing journey! 'Cleo' is a 1926 Singer, all she needed was a new belt and a bit of oil! Sews beautifully and practically purrs! A joy to sew with when I am not hand sewing!
(I love working with wool too!)
Glad your antique sewing machine is now working! 💖
That is awesome!
Yay welcome to the world of cosplaying. The skirt looks so cute.
Thanks so much!
Katherine, thank you- I so much enjoy your channel. Beautiful garments- and fresh air countryside.
Thank you so much!
I LOVE working with wool. It's almost as delicious as linen. I can't get hold of it here without ordering online. I like vintage, too, but prefer the 50's hour-glass dresses. Really beautiful wool, girl! Thanks for persisting with a sewing video, I don't much go for make-up stuff, but I love supporting your channel. I grew up in high country Colorado where the wind chill took things down to -50F. Brrrr! Now I live in icy, rainy, dreary OR which should be wool country, for sure.
Thanks for your comment. Yes, wool and linen are the best!
Looks nice! I would love to make one of my own. Thanks for posting this because it has given me ideas to think about.
I live in WA state near the Oregon border and can't image at least a fireplace or wood stove in a shop or studio. I've built the chimneys and routing for them in homes, garages, shops and studios. Last year the heat was out at my daughter's home nearish Seattle, so I sent her the plans to install a wood stove with the stove pipe going directly straight to the roof. Three weeks is a long time to go without the furnace working. It was the entire area that the gas was cut off due major snow storms.
I found the stove and kit online for them.
Hi there, thanks for your comment. Yes, getting a wood stove is definitely on our priority list for the studio. Have a nice day!
Lovely video again Katherine, I live on the Lancashire Yorkshire border where creatures was filmed in the eighties, love watching it and finding the landscapes locally. Helen’s skirt looks lovely on you. You are so knowledgeable, I can’t sew at all but been following your sewing adventures a long time. If you ever come to Yorkshire or Lancashire make sure you visit the textile mills museums in Burnley and Helmshore and Macclesfield silk museum. You will learn a lot
Thank you Catherine. Very nice and I love that TV show too.
I started using tailor's tacks when I sewed my wool coat, I am a total convert now. That iron. 😍
So glad the "Farmer's Wife" is working well for you, mine is hands-down best machine I've used.
Yes, tailor’s tacks make such a difference! So glad you put a bug in my ear about how great that machine is.
It turned out absolutly beutiful!
Thanks for this video.
I'm in the pattern making process of creating an outfit my selfe, but felt a little off due to the weather (we just went from freezing cold to damp and horrible where I live).
Watching you working on this project gave me a kick in the behind, to start my project up for real.
Such an inspiration.
Thank you!
Thanks so much for your kind words! I can relate, I myself have been dragging in the sewing motivation department lately. It’s something we all go through.
One of my favorite shows too! I don’t enjoy sewing but I love to crochet so I’ve made a few of the snoods she wear on her head and puts her hair up in them..
Katherine you look great in your amazing skirts. 🌷🌷🔝☺
A well-made wool skirt is a real investment. I made one around 1968 or so in a shade of brown wool twill that leaned toward a cool palette. Mine did have a waistband, lapped back zipper, and a front pleat. No pockets. I lined it bemberg that matched nearly perfectly. I used hem-tape to get a completely smooth hem. I finished the lining with 2.5” taupe lace to be rebellious. The fabric and notions all came from a remnant shop in Northern Ontario. I wore that skirt until I finished school and then to work for many years afterwards. When my daughter got big enough to wear it, she scooped it and wore it a lot. She even hand washed it once in cool water without causing it any harm. Neither of us fits in it anymore but I would bet she has it hanging in her closet, waiting for one of us to lose weight, I suppose. Hope springs eternal.
I am not much of a seamstress but I loved watching the process and admire your dedication to it!😅
Wow! You did a beautiful job! 👏👏👏
Thank you! 😊
That's a beautiful skirt. You did a great job.
Hi Katherine. Vintage clothing is amazing. Be great if you start a full line of 20 s 30 s 40 styles back 💃🏾🌟

Good morning Katherine happy Monday morning and I loved your vlogs and you are amazing Supporter and I'm proud of you and I enjoy your channel
Thanks so much!
@@KatherineSewing your welcome sending you hugs ❤️ 🤗
Heeeeeey Katherine, as always beautifully done. Hmmm, I have an older model Singer machine that's currently not working. Seeing yours has inspired me to research and get it going. Sewing is extremely therapeutic for me. Appreciate you.🥰😇.
That’s great. Yes, I absolutely love vintage machines. They are well worth the effort to get them up and running.
Lovely work. Thank You for making this video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
That shot of your husband and baby was stunning!
Congrats on your 100K subs. You can maybe let back a little on the effort timeline while your hands warm up....
Catherine, would you please make a video about your dress form? I really need one and I have seen several methods. Threads magazine featured an article years ago about putting on a loose-fitting t-shirt and getting your friends to wrap you up in duct tape. But my size fluctuates so much post menopause that I am looking for something more flexible. Years ago, a manufacturer produced an adjustable dress form, but it got really bad reviews. Your size must fluctuate with your pregnancies a great deal. Would you please make one of your extremely helpful videos on the subject of sewing mannequins?
Thanks for sharing and hoping your travel goes well.
The front anticipated appears to be delayed.❄️
I have vintage sewing machine with those foot paddle.
beautiful skirt:)
I love the skirt and top as well! Did you sew the top? If so, what pattern is it?
Thank you! Yes, I sewed that blouse as well. I found the pattern on Etsy. It’s for a “wrap blouse”.
Hi! I have seen you wear the wrap blouse, in a couple of colors. The red is beautiful. What pattern is it?
Thank you! I found the pattern on Etsy and altered it a bit.
Where did you get/make that red blouse? It's gorgeous.
Thank you! I made it out of linen using a pattern on Etsy for a wrap blouse.
Do you have a link to the Etsy pattern?
Can you make more air videos
