Women and other groups experience discrimination and other ill treatment in the general population which includes many different ethnic and religious groups. I have read various articles on orthodox and Hasidic women who are happy and peaceful in their communities. Yes I do agree there is good and bad in every community not just Hasidic Jews. But I think overall the Hasidic Jews are caring compassionate people who value family and spiritual life in such a stressful culture.

Off the top of my head, it was all a uniform adopted by some Hasidic sects around the turn of the 19th/20th century. Some sects wear more old-fashioned clothing .

If the men don't work, they spend their time in advanced Talmud study. 3 of my sons learn well more than 12 hours a day. My working son learns about 6 hours a day. The wife works to support the family. And before you ask, in our dating system she was probably looking for a long term learner. Having said that the Crown Heights Jews basically have a different system. When dating they have to decide if they want to go out of town to help Jews rediscover what it means to be Jewish.
