  • Ryan from MACkite and Ben from Foil Drive discuss essential tips for beginners starting with Foil Drive:
    1. Adjust Your Expectations: Your first session with a foil is challenging, and although a Foil Drive makes it easier to catch waves and get up, it is a different skill set.
    2. Choose Appropriate Equipment: Begin with a larger foil to make learning easier. It's better to start with bigger gear and scale down as you become more adept, rather than struggling with gear that's too advanced for your skill level.
    3. Location Selection: For your initial outings, avoid crowded areas. Opt for quieter, less populated spots to practice and familiarize yourself with the new equipment without pressure or interference from others.
    4. Learning Curve for Experienced Foilers: Even skilled foilers might find it takes time to adjust to using a Foil Drive, as it feels different from traditional foiling.
    5. Upgrade Gear Gradually: After struggling initially with regular setups, Ben suggests switching to bigger gear initially can simplify the learning process. Later, as you get accustomed to how the Foil Drive operates, you can transition back to your preferred equipment.
    6. Focus on Technique: Pay attention to the technical aspects such as weight distribution over the board’s nose to keep it flat, and learning how to disengage the motor effectively.
    7. Observe Surf Etiquette: Always remember to respect other surfers. Those without a motor should have priority over those with one, similar to yachts having the right of way over power boats. Being considerate and not exploiting the advantages of a Foil Drive in crowded areas is key.
