      I had the same thing, but I knocked that mic, and stand the heck out cold! The whole band except the bass player(who witnessed the arc of over an inch!) wondered what was the issue with me. It happened once before that, but second time hurt more, and that was it! I said I’m done singing! Lmfao!

    Steve can talk down about that Star Licks video all he wants, but the stuff he plays at the beginning, and his gear and tone, are epic. He was using one Mark IIC+ as a preamp, and two more as power amps for a stereo rig. That is crazy. But most importantly, it is literally impossible for a guitar player to be better than that, from a technical standpoint. He plays fast and uses all the tricks (harmonics, whammy bar, dive bombs, etc), but he's also playing to the changes, and the whole thing serves as the melodic drive of the track. He's doing everything you can do, and doing it as well as it can be done. All of his playing is great, but for me, that video and the stuff he played on Running With the Night are the kind of thing I aspire to most. If it was improvised, that makes it even more mind boggling. Also, the fact that he was basically the greatest metal shred player of all time, playing on pop songs, is pretty crazy. He defined that era and its sound more than anyone else except EVH (credit where credit is due). He is one of the greatest guitar players of all time, period.

      I know this is an old thread but just seeing it for the first time. Agree that Luke should feel no shame about the Star Lick series. In its time, it was one of the very few ways that the common player could get any background info on how something was played, their approach to playing it, and the gear they were using (unless you could see them in concert or a guitar magazine did an article--which was still very limited). Today we are spoiled rotten with all this stuff online.
      And, all the fuss these days about all the rack gear back then! Folks hammer about that but LOTS of today's players have pedal board rigs, multi-path effects, stage rigs with software plug-ins, amp simulators, switching, hybrid amps etc, etc, that are every bit as complex and indulgent, if not more.
      IMHO much of today's guitar equipment wouldn't even be possible without the pioneering that went on during the 80s and 90s. No shame for Luke. Especially with a catalog of work like his!!

    • @JohnTheo-kd4zb
      @JohnTheo-kd4zb Рік тому +2

      100 percent you nailed it, there are great players everywhere and there all over social media but, none have the soul, the melody, and the resume of playing on so many great songs, not to mention the brilliance of Toto. It’s a level no guitarists/singer/songwriter will ever achieve. Todays top 40 is garbage, you can’t compare the musical brilliance of the 70s, 80s, 90s and even the 2000s

    • @ChromaticHarp
      @ChromaticHarp Рік тому +2

      I saw Luke play at the baked potato many times when I lived in LA. He always brought his A game, every tune and solo were EPIC. He was also very funny in his mic patter between songs, telling jokes and reading out of an old porno novel, which he called ‘poetry readings’ one time he walked into a lounge I was playing in Vegas, at first I was a bit nervous, but this was 18 months into a two year, six night a week contract, so my chops and confidence were at a high point. On break, I walk over to his table, introduced myself, and he was really nice and humble, complimenting my playing and making conversation with him ez. What a great player a human being.

    Great interview! I love how down-to-earth Steve is, and his wonderful sense of humor. He nailed it when he said you can learn all the fantastic online show-me-off licks you want to but you got to play with people, with a drummer! In the '80s that's how we all started out. Playing in bands and learning your instrument along the way. Hammer jamming is what we called it when as a band we would just play nothing. Maybe a rhythm progression somebody had thought of and we would just roll with it. Sometimes it turned into a good or even great song. I miss those times when nobody knew anything and there were no expectations just four guys enjoying experimenting with sounds together. Once you become a pro player and have been in several bands, decades go by and it's never like that again. Especially now in the current never-ending episode of Twilight Zone were all being forced to live in. I still have a VHS tape or two of Star Licks. They were the closest thing we had to the plethora of lessons and online tutorials that are available today. I actually just starting to play again after raising my son in a single-parent household and he canceled me three years ago at age 15. I actually gave up music because of him and some bad luck with some health scares he had that required a lot of attention. To get to the point of professional management, being BMI affiliated, a producer and just walk away thinking I'll continue with my studio in my basement and having my hard drive crash in 2005ish maybe and trying to track stuff down in the local analog recording studio only to find he recorded over your master and just has the track sheets left over dated 1999 and I remembered it as 2004 ish! I still have questions about that master that doesn't sit well with me. Had a musician buddy helping me put the foundation tracks down so then I can finish the rest later by myself. He asked me if he could use the tape in the same studio with the agreement not to mess with what was mine on it. The studio owner had told me he was booked all summer and I couldn't wait that long to resume recording I was inspired by my music at the time, so I bought a digital 16-track recorder. Now he says he never used it but even the studio owner started looking for his master thinking the same thing when he couldn't find mine. So I'm just not sure, there were a couple of songs he really liked of mine that he thought were hits. He's since moved away and for some reason, won't talk to me about it? He's been an active musician and I became inactive. I taught him how to play guitar when he was just 16 years old, I consider us brothers. So I'm really put off by how he's acting. Text him 40 times with just one rebuttal on using my master. No questions were answered about how he and his family are doing, or if he's playing music, no nothing. We are now in our 50's. Where does the time go? It's hard to start again where you left off. It's been 18+ years and listening to some 4-track training tapes because my digital 16-track Akai Hard drive crashed. It really freaks you out even with the low recording quality how good those songs are and my voice then wow! It's such an unbiased reaction because I've been removed from it for so long. I had a five-octave voice back then but Not now! My advanced vibrato control is still there and I plan on lifting a few High vocal parts over to the new recordings I'm planning on starting. I'm also thinking with the new vocal harmonizers on the market I can program it to hit the high notes at the end or where ever and I don't think it's cheating because I'm still singing it, and it will be just for brief moments in the song. Besides guitarists have been using them for over 50 years. But the punch in the gut was what was recorded on a hot mic 18 years ago after recording the song everyone thought should be my greatest hit song far as potential. My buddy and I had finished a recording session and he left and I had left the recorder running by accident. Im separated and divorced from my wife almost 15 years ago that's made my life hell continually up to my typing this now. It's so horrible people will buy the autobiography I'm currently penning because it's so insanely bad! The custody hearing judge stated 14 years ago " this is the most toxic hearing I've ever presided over in 30+ years of serving on the judiciary." I had only played defense at the time deciding to mediate instead of continuing the trial after I beat all the criminal charges brought up against me. Even the Child Protection Services agreed to testify on my behalf when it was my turn to attack her but instead, I choose to go to mediation. I was and am still not out to hurt her and her life. But if that judge knew everything that had transpired then? Not to mention the unholy atrocities she's perpetrated against me since 100-fold? He probably would've stopped just short of sentencing her to a life sentence in prison!! It's that bad!! I've continued to take the high road and I don't know how I've been able to do it? I'm old and wise enough to know it will just add to the misery and my conscience is clean. So back to the hot mic left recording. So here it is 2023 and I'm listening to this old 4 track recording we had done to prepare ourselves for the commercial studio and I was also putting some vocals down on the local recording studio owners bands unfinished album. It was completely finished and I had free reign to do whatever I wanted on the songs. So I recorded it down to stereo on my four track recorder so I could dub over a couple of vocal tracks. Anyhow, back to the hot mic. We recorded my song She Says She Loves Me which is one of those sarcastic songs about failed love at the end and a hot mic was left on and my wife comes home from work and it records the immediate conversation. Quit frankly, it made me cry like a baby! I couldn't believe the tones of our voices, the words being said to each other, so shocking! How could that couple be so much in love? How could that loving woman have turned into the demon she is now?? How could that loving women want to take my son away from me entirely or try to put me in prison? How?! But how perfect and fitting to be at the end of arguably the best song I ever wrote with a real-life scene happening at the end of it that follows the song's theme is a crazy great coincidence!! You can bet your ass I will sample about 15-20 seconds of that conversation to place at the end of my professional recording of that song... Sorry, Everyone. I've been isolated by myself now for three years. My two best friends broke into my home while I was gone and stole about everything but my music equipment thank God. Not a phone call or text from my son that I raised until age 15 for three Christmases now! I told him I loved him every day of his life... So when everything you lived for disappears suddenly without warning, you find yourself struggling to find a reason to live. I'm not a drama queen either. You can never understand how something like this affects even a strong-minded, willed person like myself. It just leaves you bitter, empty, depressed, and feeling sorry for yourself. It's actually quite pathetic, I must admit... Damn, sorry again everyone, I've gotten introverted and a little ate up I guess. So back to the Star Licks VHS videos, lol.
    I remember the first guitar solo I learned was either You Give Love A Bad Name or I think it actually was Over The Mountain a Randy Rhodes guitar solo and I think it is one of the better ones on that album. It always irked me because I took the time to learn that solo and play it well but wasn't a song we ever covered live. So it was reduced to the solo I played at the party after the gig in somebodies living room or bedroom to show off my skills.LMAO

    Dave. I’m going to build a JTM45. What transformers do you recommend? Mojotone (Heybore) has one output and two power transformer options, but I might want higher B+ voltage than 355. I’ll have to do a super chat if I don’t hear from you

    Love it! Playing music is a group activity. You need to play with others. It's great to play along with records, but it order to progress you NEED to play together. Luke is so much fun. God bless him.
