  • 8 February 1990, first appearance of Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha on Bulgarian TV. Less than 3 months after the beginning of the collapse of Communism - the resignation on 10th November of Todor Zhivkov, who ruled the country for more than 30 years.
Simeon II is one of the last living heads of state from the World War II time and the only monarch in history to return to a position of power through democratic elections. His election victory in 2001 came after 50 years of exile.
Born June 16, 1937, he became King (Tsar) Simeon II on 28th August, 1943 upon the death of his father, King Boris. Since he was only six years old, Simeon's uncle Prince Kyril, Prime Minister Bogdan Filov and General Mihov were appointed regents.
After the Communist take over in September 1944, the regents were arrested and taken to the Soviet Union for questioning. They were returned to Bulgaria to be executed in February 1945, together with all members of the last 3 governments, members of parliament, army commanders and eminent intellectuals.
In September 1946, in the presence of the Soviet army in Bulgaria, a referendum was held and abolished the monarchy. The day after, the surviving members of the royal family were speedily exiled from Bulgaria. They first went to Egypt and in 1951 moved to Spain where the family was granted asylum.
In February 1990 popular Bulgarian TV presenter Kevork Kevorkian travelled to Madrid to interview Simeon for his weekly show "Vsyaka Nedelya" ("Each Sunday"). The broadcast version was about 50 minutes long. It caused quite a stir, Bulgarians were impressed -- mainly by his language -- after decades of stale, nomenclatura language of remote despots, here was someone who looked them in the eyes (from Madrid) and gave them hope.

Каквото и да говорим той е великан..рода им е великан ... той е нашият ЦАР !!! Официално не, но за нас той винаги ще си бъде Цар Симеон II.

The king of Bulgaria is a relic of the National History of the country. The politics are dirty business, this is a common knowledge, but I may daresay that he is more a nationalist and a patriot than many of the Bulgarians. Swindler you say? Yes, but he may also be a swindler, stealing for Bulgaria from the rest of the World. And before insulting somebody, be informed, please read the History of the country again!
