  • Filmmaker Lodge | Park City, Utah, January 23, 2024 - For the sixth consecutive year, Asia Society Northern California (ASNC) hosts panel discussions honoring Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islander talent at the Sundance Film Festival. Members gather for an engaging dialogue on the nuances of "voice" - directorial voice, artistic voice, and the pain and joy of reclaiming one's voice in the face of obstinate systems.
In the day's second panel, Moderator and ASNC Executive Director, Margaret Conley, highlights short films Lea Tupu’anga / Mother Tongue - a story about a young speech therapist disconnected from her Tongan heritage who must communicate or risk her patient’s life, and, SHÉ (SNAKE) - a story about a top Chinese violinist in her elite youth orchestra whose internal demons whisper to her, urging her to be the best, no matter the cost.
Panelists include Luciane Buchanan, Actor and Screenwriter of Lea Tupu’anga / Mother Tongue, Vea Mafile’o, Director of Lea Tupu’anga / Mother Tongue, and, Renee Zhan, Writer & Director of SHÉ (SNAKE).
