no, only crash, cortex, tiny, dingodile, n.gin, coco, polar, and pura are available, tropy can only be played in in anything but story, and oxide cant be unlocked, however the gameshark can allow you to play as him. hope this clears things up

I always thought no unlocking N. Oxide was one of the stupidest things they could've done in this game. All the Crash racing games after this one were nowhere near as good. If they were to remake this game with improved graphics, online play and more characters like Oxide and the trophy girls and sell it in the Playstation store on PS3, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

And for the most part the answer we got back was it is impossible to beat him. However, that summer I spent the whole proving that wrong. He's taking all the right short cut but the times he is getting are times you would be getting if you were using a regular character. He don't seem good enough to have won him. . .
That's because Nitros Oxide's stats are all average, same with Crash Bandicoot and Doctor Neo Cortex. I know this is an ancient comment. But I just wanted to point this out to anyone who stumbles across this comment.
There's a way to play as Oxide in the Purple Gem Cup without cheating! Just play Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled.

i don't remember properly but i think u have to win nitrosoxide several time on adventure and then u get a new video to the menu

If you put the ps1 disc itself into the ps2, it will play, in other words it's backwards compatible.
i have a PS3 and i have this game it rocks but i would be better if they could become mysteriously harder

Unfortunately not. You cannot play as Oxide in CTR, the only way to play as him is to use a hack code.
I beat all the time trails and I didnt unock him. You need a gameshark.
