Literal Japanese Title: "That Fateful Night". And if you want to be punny, "Night of Destiny".
English one starts at 2:37.
WHOA. THAT VIDEO THUMBNAIL IS THE BEST.
Note: It's really only as HD as the emulator upscaling the movie file. Only the game is in true HD on Dolphin when the models get rendered. Also, those interlacing lines are actually within the game movie (.thp) file itself, so there's no fixing that.
Yeah, I went literal translation here. Do NOT start a Dub vs. Sub war here. This is merely me appreciating both sides of the voice acting for this game and testing how well I can hear and translate the Japanese side. Just practicing.
Take your pick. "IKE? STAY BACK!" or "OYAJIIIIIIIII!" as they are meme generators. English Ike's "DON'T LEAVE ME!!!!" gets an honorable mention as a meme generator as well.
My personal opinion:
Japanese Ike: OYAJIIIIII!
English Ike: Okay. THIS is where he makes me cringe. The "DON'T LEAVE ME!!!" part is... yeah... almost as bad as Mist's voice in the FE10 execution scene. But it's TOO FUNNY TO HATE. The best.
Japanese Greil: Manly. I have so much respect.
English Greil: Manly. Nothing can beat that "IKE? STAY BACK!
Greil has my approval on both voice types.
"His voice is universally badass." ~Mageknight404
Japanese Black Knight: Yes. Just, yes. Calm. Decisive. Still speaking in a tone of Japanese that, despite its informality, still has the sense of respecting his former teacher's skill.
English: Okay okay, I've heard the opinions with his voice modulator version. Like how people like he sounds more... "demonic/evil/mysterious" whatever you call it. It bothers the hell out of me. I mean, how the HELL did Greil recognize his voice that way? I couldn't even understand him fully without turning up the volume on high the first time I saw this when new to the game.
He should've known swords best axes.
He couldn’t use a sword because he severed his tendons that made him hold his sword.
The fact that Greil's Japanese voice is also Big the Cat from the Sonic games, Donkey Kong, Ganondorf from Zelda Ocarina Of Time and Super Smash Bros Melee including Patrick from Spongebob. XD
But Greil's death is still sad. :(
Aysha Wattellier Really? That's nice to know.
Raheem Plummer Yes it's really him! :D
+Aysha Wattellier Meanwhile, Greil's English voice actor, Stephen Weyte, is also the voice of Caleb from Blood. Given that Blood is my favorite game of all time, I admittingly have a bias towards the English version of this.
On a vaguely related note, the voice of Duke Nukem, Jon St. John, is also the English voice of Big the Cat from the Sonic games.
+Roudansk Alamir Greil's English VA is also MC Ballyhoo from Mario Party 8.
sunshinefludd
I played Mario Party 8 on Wii & I didn't know that, thanks for that cool fact. =)
"The only weapon I need Iz.. Rait... Heeyah!"
LOL
I appear to disagree with almost everyone who has commented on this video!
I think Ike and Greil's voices are great in English. The acting is horrible, but the voices themselves are fitting. This is probably Ike's worst scene. He sounds much better in the other ones.
The Black Knight sounds off in both versions, but the English one is a sound mixing trainwreck. It's like they used the uncustomized Audacity Reverb effect two or three times and just left it at that. Ho man it's bad.
Yeah. "What are you doing" was pretty laughable. "Threw it away" would've been great with a little more. "Come on boy, come try me" was spot on. Could've been terrible voice directing in general. A lot of times with game recording you record your lines by yourself in a booth so it's really up to the director to set the scene and give context to what's going on. They probably didn't get all that many takes. =/
JelloApocalypse Hm, fancy seeing you here.
+JelloApocalypse I believe this was more a case of bad voice directing than voice acting. As you said, the English voices do fit, at least I believe they do (Although I will say I felt that the Black Knight's voice was... eh...), but it was the performance that kind of made this scene what it is.
Can we all at least agree that this scene is better than "MARIO!!! HOW DARE YOU RUIN THIS FAMILY VACATION!!!" Please? XD
Jello? Fancy meeting you here, didn't knew you like fire emblem lmao
JelloApocalypse at least BK’s English voice was fixed for Radiant Dawn. I found him to be everything I thought he would be in that game.
I like the english black knight. He sounds demonic and out of the norm. It actually makes him creepy.
Agreed. Japanese BK sounds too calm.
Am I the only one who feels extremely sad when Ike says "Don't leave me!"?
People, his mother is presumably dead, this is the man he looked up to for his whole life, and Ike's father is dying in his hands. Why do you complain that he's not just spitting out the word "father" repetitively? I think the "Don't leave me" adds a humongus amount of true emotion behind the scene.
13gamerbullet Ike's mother wasn't presumably dead. She was dead.
The game never told me °(ಗдಗ。)°.
+13gamerbullet I got sad to... knowing that somebody got paid to say that line like that...
Actually, it did, quite explicitly. Or, more specifically, Volke did, if you hadn't figured it out by then.
13gamerbullet Never thought that way. You are truly right.
I think Path of Radiance and its sequel should get a remake on the Switch, especially since how popular the Fire Emblem Series has gotten over the past 4 years since Awakening was released.
I wonder if Greg Chun (who does Ike's voice in Heroes, in addition to Lukas from Echoes) would do a better job at Ike grieving his dad's death than Jason Adkins.
We haven't really heard Greg Chun in a really emotional scene in any of his FE performances, have we? Between Lukas, Ike, Elidgan and Ephraim, none of his performances really give us a look into his capacity to tackle such a scene. I also haven't played any of the (quite few) other roles he's had outside of Fire Emblem to know if there's any examples there.
Probably because he wasn't the main character at the time (Lukas was more of a supporting character). Maybe if he was given the role of Ike in the remake, he could show off some emotional range.
Well, at any rate, I'm certainly curious to know how capable he is of pulling such a scenario off. Basically all his roles so far are anti-emotional, and that kind of *seems* to be the strength of his voice, so to play such a contrasting scene... who knows, he might pleasantly surprise us all, but I could also imagine that it would just not fit him.
Greg Chun was also Adam in Nier: Automata.
Verkili And Raz from Valkyria Chronicles 4.
Greil is bad at Fire Emblem.
You'd think as an accomplished mercenary leader, he'd know the weapon triangle by now..
Some Guy at the Soupermarket If you played a game other than Fates or Awakening, you'd know that he severed the tendons in his sword hand after going berserk and murdering his wife. He can't use swords anymore.
【ʙꜰᴀᴍ】 Runaway >tfw can't take a joke and insult someone for a profile picture
Nico Is Worst Girl Fire Emblem elitists are cancer, my friend.
startmirca As an elitist who prefers FE4 and the GBA games miles over the 3ds games (Besides echoes), this dude needs to chill the fuck out.
Ike's English VA is not as good as the Japanese one, but the English script is better in general so hmm. Greil's VA is equally good in both languages. The Black knight tho... In Japanese he actually sounds like a real person, although methinks his voice ought to have been lower. The English one is utterly incomprehensible to me, but he does sound more menacing.
The English one feels more familiar but is actually for me less natural. Due to the translation the delivery of the lines comes out forced and weird to fit the preexisting footage
Agreed; in fact, localization might have made bk's sound that way for the more menacing/other worldly/mysterious suit of armor effect.
4:42
That's the fave of a man who realized that high stats alone couldn't break the weapon triangle.
Or realizing what the luck stat finally does. Blocking his hopeful critical hit with a strong axe.
(100 years later.)
Greil: (Awakened from graveyard.)
"I live, AGAIN! "
It's kind of funny when the weapon triangle is inferred in this scene. Swords beat Ades and loe and behold, Greil gets killed because he was using an axe. Not suprised really, although I can just imagine BK bringing it up and trolling about it. XD
StarRoseDragon5 He severed the tendons in his sword hand
【ʙꜰᴀᴍ】 Runaway Spoilers, to a ten year old game
People knocking Greil for bringing an axe to a swordfight, but it really didn't matter here. BK was just straight blocking axe strikes and completely overpowered him. He probably coulda won the fight unarmed.
BaufenBeast one handed too
Dude idek i still love Ike's voice
On the contrary, I actually like the English version better. Greil's voice is more stern and the Black Knight's voice is more intimidating. I actually think Ike's VA was decent until he had to shout "Don't leave me! Faaaaaaaather!!!!!"
I love the "Don't leave me" part
The EN voice acting isn't bad... except for "Fatheeeeeeeer"
Justplay / Jad Even Alm's blood-curdling scream in Echoes that he does after finding out that by killing Rudolf, he committed patricide, was better than Ike's "Don't leave meeee! Father!".
Personally, I feel Black Knight's English distortion is an overkill for the feeling he's supposed to give you. He's supposed to sound ominous, but the problem is that he doesn't need such a thing.
Black Knight is shrouded in anonymity. The only thing we knew about him before Radiant Dawn was that he was taught by Greil and like him was one of Daein's Riders. The fact that he wields Alondite in such a menacing way is terrifying. Even in Radiant Dawn when he comes to save Michiah, the fact that his foes can't even hit him, and even if they did the would deal no damage is supposed to invoke the feeling that Black Knight isn't human. His armor can only be damaged by certain weapons, and failure to recognize it results in certain death.
This scene is overkill for that feeling.
Greil sounds better in English.
Raheem Plummer oh yeah so does the black knight
Greil's voice is universal: badass. And you have no idea how hype I was when I first saw this scene back when I was still playing the JP version.
Also sorry Rey but I gotta do it this time
"OTOU-SAAA-er, OYAJIIIIIII!!"
Ike has blue hair, wears a red cape... The Black Knight(Zelgius) has blue hair, also CURRENTLY wearing a red cape... Now is this a coincidence?
Hahaha, wow, the Japanese version really has much better voices, and no, I don't exclusively prefer Japanese voices in games. I kind of wondered what the Black Knight would sound like. The English voice sounds kind of distorted and unnatural, but I can definitely picture his true identity when I hear the original voice track.
He says "Not even 10 years and you think you've surpassed me" my good sir that man was matching you blow for blow one-handed
Idk why but the English “do you... want to die?” is REALLY cool to me with that soft tone
*Part of my childhood.*
People are knocking the English Black Knight voice for sounding like a sound-mixing wreck, but honestly, I think it works quite well. I like to think that the fact that he's wearing armor that's been blessed by the goddess has shrouded his voice and given it a strange, otherworldly sound. Definitely adds to the intimidation of the character. But yes, they probably went a little over-the-top with it, since it's almost impossible to tell exactly what he's saying unless you've watched the scene several times.
The English Black Knight voice modulator here is akin to the Japanese Grima scene in Awakening:
You *REALLY* have to freaking listen to the scene several times to get what the hell they're saying.
I love how soft and melodious the black knight’s voice is in English because of how offputting it is but I caN’T HEAR ANYTHING HE’S SAYING
WHAT IS IKE FIGHTING FOOOOOARRRRGH!???
The english one definitely sounds better. I love The Black Knight's voice.
"DON'T LEEEEAAAVE MEEEEE...FAAAAATHEEEER!" made Fire Emblem notorious for having "bad dub" reputation even in the FE community.
Awakening alleviates this, however.
shadowofchaos725 Well... yeah Ike's voice is lackluster, but the Black Knights voice is awesome IMHO. But also, did you know it's the same voice for Ike in brawl as it is in this game? My god, the voice got so much better.
shadowofchaos725 I think Ike's English and Japanese voice was equal.
Greil sounded better in the English Dub.
shadowofchaos725 Meh. He sounds like he's on the verge of tears, and can't catch his breath. I'd say his voice actor actually got the emotion in, instead of just saying it straightforward.
Path of Radiance and Fates had pretty bad dubbing and or/localizations. Fates especially, coming off of the decent localization of Awakening. Hinoka sounded like she has lung cancer, Selkie sounded like she had asthma, Effie sounded like some female Rocky Balboa, Xander should've been lower-pitched, Nyx should've sounded less squeaking. And Male Kana? He should've been voiced by a man (like in the Japanese version, as was also the case with Awakening's Male Morgan in both English and Japanese version) instead of getting a lady who apparently did not have any experience playing kid boys. Apparently Kris Zimmerman-Salter, who only took the job for a paycheck, phoned her directing in, especially in comparison to her work on MGS.
Who knew the Japanese VO of Greil also voiced for Ganondorf (Ocarina of Time, Smash Melee/Ultimate)?
Despite Greil using Urvan against the weapon triangle, Urvan is probably one of the most powerful axes in all of Fire emblem due to its damage output and its accuracy. The thing has over 110 accuracy, so it's bound to hit something.
And there you have it, the weapons triangle kicked in and lost.
the best Cutscene of PoR
"You're going to die" he was totally referencing the weapon triangle
Why do I get a feeling that Black Knight break the 4th wall about weapon triangle?
I like the Japanese especially the Black Knight voice, it's not clean, he sounds like he is talking trough a helmet, his voice it's opaque; in English he sounds robotic and kind of a "I’m so beautiful" girly type imo.
Never liked his voice in English and tough he had a girly/beauty/whatever type of voice in Japanese and that was the reason he sounded like that in English, glad to see it's not the case.
And Greil sounds great in both, Ike in neither but I think I still like the Japanese more.
ike and greil sound way better in japanese but black night is much better in english :P
Bobo Won I disagree. Greil sounds better in English. His English voice was more stern and fitted him more.
It's knight! Not night!!!!
Zetai Kareshi (Absolut Boyfriend Japanese Drama) tends to disagree (there instesd of Knight, the robots name is written as Night lol).
I like the haunting echo of the English Black Knight, it just sends a shiver down my spine, and helps personify that this man not ordinary. Unfortunately, I felt the Japanese BK sounded too ordinary.
And there's absolutely no blood in that sword...
Gotta keep it “family friendly “ I guess lol
0:20 Still haven't found that soundtrack. >.>
ironically the black knight's armor is blessed so any hits would technically do nothing.
however in radiant dawn the strongest weapon against the black knight is the hammer and not either of the blessed god swords
The Japanese script seems to imply that Ragnell once belonged to Greil, and I'm wondering how that could be.
This is why we desperately need a remake with the FEH VAs.
I think this scene proves that the student become teacher or something
Ike's dad's voice in english doesn't seem to match him at all? It's strangely high-pitched and overdramatic. And the Black Knight's distortion is really weird. I like how in the Japanese it sounded like he was just in a helmet, but the English version went way over the top trying to make him sound evil and demonic (and overdramatic). Also, hard to understand. How did Greil recognise him with that effect?? Japanese seems more refined overall (not even mentioning Ike's english voice).
I think Ike's dad's voice is better in English, in Japanese Greil's voice sounds too young to fit his face lmao
Greil's voice in Japanese is more fitting with Hector from The Blazing Blade or grown Ike's voice imo.
Why did they remove the "Dammit!"?
I personally like the Enlish Voices better here. Okay, maybe not Ike lol. But the "filter"/echo they use for the English Black Knight is a lot better than the completely clean Black Knight in Japanese (a helmet would distort sound). But hey, Atleast these japanese voices aren't all like old women like in some animes
*weapon traingle thoughts kicks in* .... Wait...
Is it legal for me to say that Ike sounded like he was voiced by Hayden Christensen in the English version?
When you read the gaming title and its on german wowowo
Ike STAY BACK!
oh no Greil forgot about the weapon triangle
Greil forgot the weapons triangle
Black Knight sounds so bad in the Japanese version... Like even not compared to the English. That was just terrible.
The only issue is Ike's voice in the english version is so quiet. They should have boosted it a bit.
Depends on the game/anime, I would either one that suites my taste. Except if that game/anime happen to have my favorite seiyuu/voice actor in it.
If Greil makes it into Heroes. He will need cancel affinity if he don’t know the Triangle.
You think the same with his stats from the valentine's day event?
Ya baby...in the radiant dawn he are the best unite of the games with this music so badass...long life too the black knight but dead To ashnard.
My opinions on this scene. In japanese the acting is close to perfect, my main gripe is with the Black Knights voice lacking menace to it. In english the voice acting is a little bit weird at times. Greil for the most part is great with only a little bit of weird delivery, Ike was good like half the time but when he has to yell it doesn't really work, and Black Knight ,while good in the acting department, his voice is menacing sure but it's too edited to sound normal.
How could they get rid of Stephen Weyte for FE Heroes? I expected Greil to hold up a sawed-off shotgun
2 years late, sorry but does he still voice act?
@@legendarymarston9174 Ultrakill and gloomwood
Ike couldn’t save his father Greil, who robbed himself of his full strength. At 2:03 (Japanese) and 4:40 (English) is the thrust to remember. Black Knight thought the fight was too easy.
If there’s going to be Path of Radiance HD Remaster on Nintendo Switch, I suggest Nintendo of America re-translate the game, making a more direct translation from Japanese.
David Hill And maybe add full voice acting outside the FMVs (similar to how Echoes and Three Houses did it) with new voice actors, like Greg Chun (Lukas from Echoes, Raz from Valkyria Chronicles 4) as Ike. Just don't hire Kris Zimmerman as the dub director again, because she did not do a good job with Fates' dub.
IT WAS IN SLOW MOTION!
Black Knight: use this sword
Greil: why?
Black Knight: Equal fight. Weapon triangle bro 😋
Its Ragnell, the only Sword that can damage the Black Knight
I like both of them in English
Especially black knight
I think the English Black Knigh's voice is better, only they handled the audio mixing terribly.
They tried to create a muffle effect but just layered reverb and made it sound horrible.
I get the VERY distinct impression that people gas up Jason Adkins as Ike just cause of Smash Bros. I vastly prefer his and the Black Knight's current voices.
Every time I hear the English Ike say "Don't leave me." I laugh a little. It just sounds wrong for some reason :P
IKE STAY BACK
The Sailor Inkvader lol
My only problem is that no one can fucking hear the black knight, man is literally whispering and it’s not helped by his weird echoey reverb
The only complain I have with English version is that I can't even understand a shit about what Black Knight is actually saying to Greil and there is no a subtitles ON/OFF option just for the cinematics in this fucking game or it's main menu. What the fuck were they thinking honestly? I had to come to youtube and search for this video so I could understand their dialogues and the STORY... Since this game is all about the story... duh. Everything else about this game is great.
I like this a lot better than Three Houses
I know this scene is supposed to be a sad one but when Greil says Ike, stay back, I can't help but cringe.
I much prefer the JP Black Knight. Sounds like a guy in armor rather than a hollow suit.
Hey Jeralt
Meh, aside from Ike's "FAAAATHAAAA" in english I actually vastly prefer the dub for this scene.
*OYASEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE*
I am the biggest fan of fire emblem
...right.
"The biggest FE fan" wouldn't be declaring it themselves on a UA-cam video. If there really was a "biggest fan", they would let other people judge their merit.
Who thumbed this up
noob
You saw it here, ladies and gentlemen. The "biggest FE fan" calling JelloApocalypse, a noob.
ok noob
I Love Ike voice
Will you be adding more PoR cutscene comparisons?
Writing aside, I prefer Ike's English voice. Greil sounds better in Japanese, though. In English he sounds too high pitched and hammy.
I really don't like the added modulation to the black knight, it seemed like it was trying to make up for the voice not sounding intimidating on it's own (the Japanese version was okay) and Greil's lines lack the emotion and punch in the English version
What's with death scenes and bad voice acting. We got DMC with Trish's death, Iris' death from Mega Man X, and this.
To be fair......
It was axe user vs sword user....
Keon Bennett if you played the game you'd know why he lost
Annnnnnd there goes the joke
I'm okay with both. I'd even prefer the weird evil voice effect for the Black Knight rather than a clear voice.
Greil's japanese acting might be a bit better.... However Ike's english acting.. yeah, pretty bad.
I just have an issue about the reinterpretation depending on the region. The Japanese BK is better considering his personality. It feels off to me.
Overall I feel like the EN script's interpretation of the BK is superior for one specific reason: The warp powder malfunction
It significantly downplays the events of PoR and Radiant Dawn when it comes to the Black Knight to a cop-out regardless of the fact that I love my seiyuu and play FE in Japanese.
@@shadowofchaos725 I was speaking only of that scene because the Japanese script actually makes more sense than the English one.
It feels more human.
The warp powder content is obviously nonsense that I'm glad has been removed.
But it's sad that we actually lost a lot of content (between the extended script exclusives to the hard mode in japanese, the reinterpretation..)
In French, it's also annoying sometimes.
I love Zelgius's character and I feel like it could have been much better.
I honestly like Black Knight's English VA more, it sounds very menacing yet he also manages to sound polite and elegant even if the filter on his voice is pretty bad. His Japanese VA makes me think of Kamen Rider and that's actually pretty cool I don't think its as fitting as his English voice.
3:26 ... his voice reminds me of (TFS)nappa...
I hate Black Knights English voice... Like, does his helmet have a voice synthesizer? I highly doubt so.
w e a p o n t r i a n g l e , g a w a i n
jk
Did Black Knight use Eclipse?
Greil is made of so much manliness.
But not of knowledge about the weapon triangle.
Huh, I like that the JP script includes a time hint that it's not even been 10 years since BK last fought under/with Greil. I don't like JP BK though, he sounds like an JP business man climbing the ladder, rather than a menacing warrior. English BK doesn't bother me, but they change his voice to a very manly different one in Radiant Dawn, so it does bother me. The echo effect on it is cool, but the voice itself is still too soft.
JP Ike is bad. JP Greil is good. English Ike is great. English Greil is great.
""I’m so beautiful" girly type imo" -> Errr, maybe because it sounds kind of soft to me.
And Greil made me tough of Sanger Zonvolt for a moment (Japanese ver.), he sound so badass in both.
Watching this because of that post you made about the worst voice acting in FE...
... English voice acting has seen better days.
Greil is meh in English- I still wish I had the money to actually buy this game 😢
Jason Adkins did a bad job in this game and Radiant Dawn, but his Smash Bros Ike voice was better than Greg Chun.
Japanese FE
I prefer the English Voices. The Jqpanese is typically overdriven and to childish
*What's with all the dislikes?!*
Nikolenuurd Because the voice acting in Awakening and Echoes was better.
@@TMX1138 Seems logical.
Both versions sound stupid imo
The Japanese dialogue makes no sense with Greil implying that he trained BK only 10 years before.
He fled Daein, what - 18-20 years before the events of PoR?
Am I missing something here?
That is a phrase not meant to be taken literally.
Especially when I was an amateur translator.
十年早いんだよ!
For example, a somewhat equivalent phrase when taken literally "you're 10 years too early!" when it is commonly used to say "you're full of yourself".
@@shadowofchaos725 Ah, I see! Thanks for the clarification.
