- Here is a fantastically small and complete shelter/survival kit in a pocket sized, conveniently carried package. Using a Wrigley's Extra plastic gum box, I built a handy survival kit that's small enough to have with you at all times.

A pocket survival kit is always a useful item to have WITH you. The problem with survival kits is that if they are too large you won't usually carry them. This is the latest in a long line of endeavors to make a pocket sized kit and this one also has a shelter. Thanks for watching and please leave me a comment in the section below!
hey love the new video i just hit 300 subs im excited to see where UA-cam is taking my channel and im happy to see your channel is growing pretty nice
This past Friday I pulled out the last piece of gum from a pack of these and thought what could this container be used for? Fantastic example. Glad I kept it. Thanks
@@MSScout86 Glad it came at the right time! Thanks for watching!
Thank you!
Nice oops kit though I have trouble handling small items.
Also interesting hobo diy videos. What I don't see is hobo, DIY footwear, shoe repair on the fly, upgrading or wear prevention/life extension. Sometimes you have to buy the cheap stuff. How do you make them last longer before you start wearing them? The weld seam separates, how do you reglue it back together? Shoe glue doesn't always work. And don't use super glue. Nasty reaction with certain materials. The cloth liner in the inside wears out first. Gorilla tape doesn't work. Won't stay in place. Why couldn't they have used ripstop? How would you armour the cloth before it shreds your socks? The hollow core soles wear thin or crack. How do you patch, fill in, or pre armour the bottom? Shoe goo isn't always reliable. Is it possible to layer on some vulcanizable rubber? If so how would you go about it?
Finding plain leather boots without all the fluff like in days of old is really hard. A lot easier to fix too.
Then there is the do it yourself shoe/moccasin or boot making. That's a scary thought. But shoes are necessary for us tenderfeet.
So how would you tackle these problems? I would love to see that or those videos.
Quite impressive. I would like to challenge you to make a video taking that kit, and spending a night out. Could be a fun way of seeing it in action
That would be fun, I think. Thanks for watching and for your comments!
I'd like to see that too!
I would like to see you do it with his kit ....that's far more interesting
@@WayPointSurvival yep I remember Dave Canterbury did that a long time ago with some students, was a great video.
@@WayPointSurvival You present yourself as an expert, but without the real world component it comes off as "cutesy". Take your kit and spend a FULL night out with NOTHING else. I have bivvied with only a pocketknife and matches. Have you?You wou learn and earn some more credibility.
I find mini pocket kits intriguing. It's amazing how many things can be packed into an Altoids tin. Years ago, two friends and I went for a walk in the Adirondack mountains. We followed an established trail but the two of them wanted to take a "short cut" through the woods. We had no survival gear on us. I vehemently refused to go and fortunately logic and reason prevailed. We all followed the trail and eventually got back to camp even though the "shortcut" would have been "much quicker" according to my friends. A couple of small kits would have been nice to have if I did not persuade them to stay on the trail.
Good story! Thank you for sharing it and for watching the video!
Yes it always amazing me how many people go on walks in the wilderness with nothing, just a phone ha.
I don't even leave the house without food water & spare clothing.
People will make fun of you saying why carry all that stuff, but then they are the ones who ask for a plaster or pain killer or a torch or a blade to cut something = smug look on your face.
Walking in any wooded area without AT LEAST a map (paper), flashlights, and compass or two is a bad idea. People underestimate getting lost in the wilderness way too much. 🤦♂️
What a Great little kit. My favorite idea is the little fishing bobber light. Good thinking on that one. Keep em coming!
Thank you, glad you liked it!
Hey that’s really cool James!
I chew lots of sugarless gum. Either trident or extra. I have several of these containers! I use one gum container for a water resistant wallet. I used to be a dishwasher, and my leather wallet kept getting wet, so I use a plastic container. It’s also good for keeping your things dry from your sweat.
Using a gum container for a small survival kit is a great idea!
Thanks for watching and I like your ideas as well!
Mercy . . . you put a lot of thought into that kit! Thank you, my friend.
Thank you for watching and for your kind words!
I'd love to see this kit in Use! Would be a fun video to see just how well a small kit like this could work!
Thank you. I may do that!
Small pencil for a small note. Good one lol 😆
Right? That one was definitely off the cuff. Lol. Thanks for watching!
The clear plastic bags that you get in the produce department, when you’re buying vegetables, is an ultra compact way to collect/ carry water. It weighs nothing.
Good idea!
I've had good luck with oven bags, not as compact but temperature resistant
@@apocosy I have used/packed those as well.
@@apocosy Another good and fairly tough compact bag is the one you get where they sell live fish for your aquarium at home. They have to hold water and be on the tougher side to transport live fish. I've asked them and they'll give a few usually. For water treatment, I use potassium permanganate. It's not the best by any stretch of the imagination, but is so compact for the huge amount of water it can treat, and has a forever shelf life, that it just makes too much sense not to have it in such small compact kits. I store it in the hollow tube of a plastic coffee stir straw about two inches long, and I have enough PP to treat more water than I'll ever need. I even carry a straw filled with PP in my wallet micro kit as well. Keep up the great work.
@@wjf213 I carry PP as well, makes a good fire starter in a pinch too.
Very cool little micro kit
Thank you!
James, Must admit, when I first saw your video I had a snarky "You gotta be kidding me" attitude. Totally changed my mind. The kit is actually pretty amazing! Glad I actually spent the 8 minutes watching it. Thank you. Joe
Thank you so much for watching the video and for your spending your time. Glad you found it worthwhile!
Spray paint the knife a bright color, put a couple of Exacto knife blades or a single edge razor blade into kit. Also a small treble hook and pre- thread the needle incase you are incapacitated in some way and need to see yourself up. Harbor freight sells multi packs of small tubes of super glue that could be used to close a bad wound, if you could cram a small tube into kit. I think this is a great kit. I carry razor blade and bandaids in my wallet, small leatherman multi tool on my keychain. Also a small pill box with one days medication which can be halved if necessary for two days. The Nano light can be duct taped to your hat or the side of eyeglasses like a head lamp👍👍👍 just imagine what you could put into a small Fanny pack.
Thank you for watching.
i think i would need a bigger box. Now that's what i call packing. Great job.
Thanks, glad you liked it!
Very well thought out survival kit. I’ll have to watch this video again and take notes. I cannot believe all the stuff you got in that small Altoids tin. Good job and a great video.
Thank you!
Usually, Altoids kits, especially the ‘Smalls’, are pretty useless. Yours however is the most comprehensive and well thought out of all I’ve seen. Outstanding!
Thank you, my friend!
What is that flashlight in the kit? I didn’t catch the name even after watching twice!
The True Nano.
@@WayPointSurvival I really wish you would add links to where you got all these items, and I'd be happy to buy them through you to support your channel. I support those who share good info, and you do that over and over.
@@wjf213 I do have some links in the description. But I don't get paid from them.
Wow! That is a micro kit but it has many of your needs covered. I did see the other video on the shelter in use.
Thank you!
It would also be helpful to put a half pint sandwich bag, to collect water in, with enough purification tablets to get u through a couple of days. I think you use a quarter of a tablet, for a half pint
You could definitely do that. Thanks for watching.
Great kit! I have been hoarding those boxes, but wasnt sure why! Thanks!
Thank you so much for watching!
Very nice . Can’t imagine trying to organize that much into the space you’re working with .I think your weather got lost and came here . Have a great evening
Thank you! Be safe out there!
Awesome kit. I been looking for some ideas like this. A complete and very compact setup other than an altoids tin.
Thanks, glad you liked it!
I used the container to teach my niece and nephews geocaching.
Great for a 24hr quick kit! The shelter really expands the functionality of the kit!
😎👍🇺🇸
Definitely!
Your all videos are awesome 👍👍
Thanks!
Im getting your videos out of order but they are all good!! Like that mini shelter and the mini lights. One of your 1930s kit convinced me that I need a candle. Something like this is perfect to add to a day hike bag and allow for more food, water, and food preparation. Thanks
Awesome! Thank you!
I was surprised how much was in that kit , thanks for sharing , God bless !
Thank you! After a building a lot of kits I have gotten pretty proficient at packing them and I am always on the lookout for small, compact items that I can use or swap out. God bless you too!
Great video! You have a mini kit INSIDE a mini kit!!!! Lol.
Thank you!
@@WayPointSurvival You're welcome!
I just found this video James I don't know how I missed it because I did see the video for the little small shelter somehow someway I did. I want to thank you so much for this video you might say it hit the spot. yet another tool for the toolbox I like that that's cool. keep ye powder dry
Thank you so much, my friend!
Wow! That is a lot of stuff!
Thank you!
That may be the best small kit I’ve seen EVER. Good job!
Thank you, my friend!
Nice mini kit! I've been making these since I was in the Scouts. We used the old time bandaid tins. I like to put some tea bags, sugar and bullion cubes plus water purification tabs.
Excellent, thanks for watching!
This is very helpful to know about and to have. My brother and I have been getting stuff like this for camping trips or even just hiking and we got most of our ideas from your channel. Very informational and helpful. Thank you.
Great, thank you so much for watching and I'm glad that you are enjoying the channels!
James, I have just spent a bit of time reading some of the comments below. I really like the fact that several folks, have contributed their ideas and shared experiences. Some of those are new to me and I really enjoyed doing some "Googling" to discover more. Learning and having fun. Blessings to you, James.
Thank you and glad you are learning and enjoying the info. There is a lot of knowledge in our community!
You invited the comments. This is a comment, not a criticism. That pocket survival kit is just awesome. The Ferro rod is a must! Then the Fresnel lens, the biggest you can fit in! The mini lighter, is a bit bulky, but so easy to use, that it becomes a must too. Then Paracetamol, nothing cuts more your will to live like strong pain. A must! But you may need Aspirin too, or anti-histamines. Go with your medical history. Ask your doctor. A blade, just a blade. Can be a bulky mini knife, but just an X-acto blade or a surgical blade would perform the same and be less bulky. The sharpening diamond file. The Gorilla tape. A stainless nail. A strong needle, or two. And different size hooks. And three feet of dental floss, fishing line or any line! Ten times that would be better, of both lines! Can it fit? The hooks will work while there is bait on them. Otherwise they are just rusting. Ants on land and crayfish and crabs on water, will strip your hooks clean. And never get hooked! Damn! Check it frequently. For Summer, that is it! For the rest of the year, pack the shelter. A hard to tear one even if bulkier. Pack another in a different pocket if you can. Remember to get a new mini lighter in May and October. Summer is hard on lighters! The band-aids, matches, led lights, SMALL signaling mirror, forget them... A signaling mirror needs to be as big as you can fit, or it is useless.
Just my two cents.
Love your videos. I will keep an eye on you...
Thanks for watching!
That is the best pocket survival kit I have seen thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much!
I’m impressed.
Thank you!
Great little kit.
Thank you!
Boy I'm really glad that I found this channel and subscribed.
Glad you liked the video and that you're enjoying the channel!
That's a useful convenient kit. Thanks for the video.
Thank you!
Holy cow!!!! Thays amazing man.
Glad you like it!
Very well thought-out kit if you were lost you got a head start with this one love that shelter
Thank you!
Lots of stuff in that kit. Thanks for showing us. Take care
Thank you for watching, my friend!
That is so cool. Thanks.
Thank you!
Awesome idea !
Thanks
Thanks so much!
Ok. Had to leave a comment. I have about 10k miles of trail, and have slept more in my tent in the past 5 years than my bed. So, I have a little experience. I have seen a lot of these survival kits on many channels and I think this is the first one I have seen that puts a mini bic in. I can't take any of them serious if they don't include this most useful of fire making tools. You have multiple fire starting methods, which is always good to have, and honestly a really good basic kit! I have seen the "Shelter" type before, and I really don't think they're sturdy enough to rely on, but in a pinch, for a night or two it will do.
A few suggestions, you might add some ammonium pills, which you could easily fit in with your Advil , and possibly a few drops of bleach for some drinkable water. I think both would fit in there. And instead of having your shelter in that bag, use a heavy duty plastic ziplock (Plymor) you could also encase the whole kit in one if it was easier. It would fit your shelter, and also double as a small receptacle for water.
Just wanted to give you props for a really well thought out kit.
Thanks so much for watching and for the suggestions!
That bobber light is perfect for inspecting the bore on a muzzleloader for cleanliness, etc. Just drop it down the bore and observe. Of course, make sure it’s not loaded first!
Indeed!
So cute!
Thank you!
Nice small kit great idea..
Thanks 👍
Nice little kit
Thank you!
Very minimalist interesting
Thanks!
Thanks for the link to the Survival Blanket!! I like the compact kits, in fact my EDC is in a regular sized Altoids tin. I've seen the gum containers, and thought of uses for them, but didn't know about the blanket that would fit in them. Thanks, again!!
Excellent. It really is a handy little box for multiple things.
AEESOME idea, Brother !!!
Keep up the great work !!!
Thank you so much!
Just a suggestion instead of the Tylenol I would put two tiny coated 80 mg aspirins.. works great for heart attack!.. will work on pain too .
Yes, you definitely have to use what works for you.
I remember in my old Scouting days seeing in a Boy's Life magazine someone made a kit using a 35mm film can . It made a great neckerchief slide . Barry Hope SGT, USA retired
Excellent idea!
Excellent video, excellent kit! Thanks!
Thank you, glad you liked it!
Excellent kit!
Thank you!
Very creative. Thank you👍
Thank you!
cool kit!
Thank you!
That tiny pencil triggered my cute aggression...
It is a pretty neat little pencil!
James, you want leave notes, stick in a few self-adhesive labels - I use those blue-bordered kind. You can STICK them on things. I have about four in my kit. Write small, you can get a lot on them.
Good idea!
Would like to suggest a couple of good strong rubber bands wrapped around something.
A small length of proper elastic may actually be better though as it won't break down as fast.
Can make excellent tourniquet- among other things.
And a small bulldog clamp (?)
Really enjoy your videos...
👍🏕
I would do things a little different, food isn't an immediate need in survival, water is. I would replace the fishing stuff with water purification. Remember the rule of threes- 3 hours without shelter, 3 days without water, 3 weeks without food. Water is much higher priority.
As I answered in another statement, I can always find a container on every roadway water way or lake. So, I have ways to make a fire so I can boil the water. Fishing gives you something to do when you are bored. Plus, it gives you the option of getting something in your stomach. I understand the priorities of survival quite well as I teach them regularly in my classes. Thank you for watching and for sharing what you would do differently!
@@WayPointSurvival In some environments you would not necessarily be able to find a container, like deep in the woods or in the middle of the desert. Don't want to leave things to chance. Personally I prefer water purification tablets, but to each their own.
True, but I can always use the fire to shape out a container as I have done it multiple times. As well as the fact that I've boiled water in such a container using hot rocks. And, even in most desert areas there is some type of wood that can be used.
Wow that was great I like it thank you James your great
Thank you for watching!
The sizzling sound on this video made me SOOOO hungry for bacon !
You're a UA-cam rock star! Great advice 👍. Cheers from 🇨🇦
Thanks for watching!
Interesting video, cool to see how much kit you've packed into such a compact kit. I would've packed it slightly differently but that all comes down to personal prioritisation and choice. (I would've put all the fishing kit in one bag to save space, a couple more band aids, only one light and added some water purification tablets) but great stuff! Subscribed.
Thank you so much and welcome aboard!
@@WayPointSurvival cheers mate 👍
Looks like a great kit 👍🏻
Thank you!
Love this! I'm a 77 year old woman and never expect to need this but I am putting together some survival items just in case! Living on SS is hard but every little bit of preparation helps!
Thank you for watching!
@@WayPointSurvival I am binge watching ALL your videos. I like your positive attitude. Good luck and God bless!
Thank you, and God bless you too!
Hope you are as personable as you seem. Very pleasant to watch. Great ideas.
Thanks so much and I really appreciate the kind words!
Nice! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
The best survival gear available to you is whatever you have on you , and in your head, when that moment hits.
Absolutely, thank you so much for watching!
OMG such a brilliant kit. This one should go down in Classic and hard to top this one. Sorry I commented on the short nails on the other kit, in a past vid. This one is the best yet. NAILED IT. NO pun intended
Thank you so much, glad you enjoyed it!
Great ideas. Very nice video. Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
Not bad at all. I would have never thought to cut down a book of matches like you did, excellent idea. Actually thought about a couple of small cases from a Dremel tool , they held bits for the tool. They may make great small kits like this.
That's a great idea!
Very great little kit.👍
Thank you!
Hi again, WayPoint Survival, great job, I love survival kits, I've been making them since I was 14. Have a great day. James

I literally bought one of those packs of gum bc I thought the case would be great for holding a kit, I might have to steal a couple of your ideas when I put one together
Thank you. Feel free to use whatever you wish and have fun!
Nicely done sir

Awesome kit. I havent been getting notices about your videos
I'm not sure why. Someone else said that as well. Make sure that you have clicked on "All" notifications. Maybe click off and then back on. Anyway, thank you for watching and welcome back!
@@WayPointSurvival thanks. Maybe youtube is messing up quick question your shelter in the kit does it contain the cordage and stakes you made from nails that you showed when you reviewed that blanket?
No, it doesn't. There wasn't room for them in the kit. I do have the cordage wrapped around the half credit card but the stakes would have to be cut on site from sticks.
That's pretty cool brother most of that stuff I couldn't use my fingers just don't work that small LOL but that's a great idea thanks for sharing stay safe and warm
Thank you for watching!
You should wrap that 30ft of chord around one of those metal EDC survival cards. You can get them cheap on ebay, and they have hooks, needles, saw blades, arrow heads, and other stuff on them depending on the type :)
Thank you for the suggestion, and thank you for watching the video.
I like the content and enthusiasm. 🙏🏼⛺️😎. Very innovative in your survival gear.
Glad you enjoy it and thank you!
There for a second when you opened up that Altoids can , I thought you were going to find the other half of your Tylenol 🤣🤣🤣
