Slightly off topic-but “on” budget cuts. We have a Democratic govenor and Senator here in Washington state. The governors office is responsible for budgeting department of social health service-cps/foster care-homeless services and housing and even how the healthcare authority distributes the state’s Medicaid budget. The other day a friend stopped by while I was in a 3 hour call hold to schedule the Medicaid transport. Now. I used to be a caregiver who scheduled rides to doctor appointments with my clients. I have years of dealing with the county Medicaid transport contractor. And-lemme tell ya… It’s always bothered me about how “cumbersome” the program is. For one thing. Why hasn’t the state updated their system for doctors to manage the referrals and recertifications thru their office software. A check box the billing department would click in order for a Medicaid resource list and automated referral to be accessed and digitally signed JUST like the doctors do for prescriptions. Then. Why. Does it take 3 hours on hold each time the client calls. It’s taken 5+ years for them to provide the forms online for the providers-BUT-when signing the recertification and referral paperwork-it’s literally 3-9 hours the client or caregiver spends on hold in the que-if lucky enough to land a spotnon hold. Their phone system sucks! Dropped calls. And-there are a couple really good schedulers I LIKE to hear pick up my calls-but-only 2. There has been no increased budget to handle all the folks with outpatient drug treatment and Covid disabilities. They DID extend hours…. But not budget for new hires! So what is the problem? Well-the trend is budget cuts. And it dawned on me. The calls that are disconnected out of que or when the overloaded lines won’t let your call in-or if you are a client and frustrated and unwell dealing with the issues-when the system isn’t showing increased demand-they don’t get new funding. If there’s no documentation of clients NOT getting scheduled-it doesn’t happen! And why would they under staff and use antiquated data/ROI SUSTEMs? To prove the service isn’t needed-and justified to cut more of the budget. They are injuring their customer service reps. Over working/stress of needing to move thru the callers-frustration with a very inept system-and…. All because. If they can’t prove the system needs to expand…. They can’t justify keeping their budget to prove clients need the service and that the program needs to adapt and support the influx of people needing transportation and/or costs covered in order to get the medical coverage they need. But what happens when-if people can’t rely on ParAtransit gwanna try being a single mom in college working with appointment books running for kids and self-4 days a week and lots of commuting. Without fuel to put in the car if living rural requires one to have a car. Once again. Services that are not utilized-get cuts. So-they MAKE the system hard to utilize. To justify the cuts they intend to make! So…
Don’t let this distract you from the fact that Hector is going to be running three Honda Civics with spoon engines, and on top of that he just went into Harry’s and bought three T-66 turbos with nos, and a motec exhaust!
