To spare you the Google search: "A logline is a one-sentence summary or description of a movie. Loglines distill the important elements of your screenplay-main character, setup, central conflict, antagonist-into a clear, concise teaser."

Because the logline contains a story's philosophical premise and a film (especially one that represents as a rhetorical argument) cannot be sustained by an untenable philosophical premise.

Only suggestion I can offer, is before going into you first question, you should have led with a better question: what is a logling? I'm not in industry (yet? been thinking about jumping in and have been doing some writing), so that type of background would really help. As usual, great guest and content and well presented.

Now, if I remember correctly the question is what is a logline? or why didn't ask "What is a logline?" Both are great points. Since I can't go back in time and ask again, we have a playlist on loglines (buff.ly/3QW0tnM ) and it tells a bit more that I missed (mea culpa). Thank you for pointing this out and have a wonderful rest of your Saturday! Hope you are staying creative.

Longline is a one sentence summary that encapsulates the work. A plot synopsis or premise is something you might read on the back of a DVD sans actors and directors. Brief, but more detailed. A log line should also entice a viewer or reader to want to KNOW MORE about the story.

Not a screenwriter., just someone who loves movies. The logline seems reductive, but maybe necessary to sell a film to brain dead studio executives. I don't think that anyone can know whether a film might work based on the logline. But executives want it, and so the game must be played.

My book is a 522 page action-adventure novel about 5 individuals dealing with the aftermath of an asteroid that almost collided with Earth. However, it was destroyed by the United States before it hit -- much to the chagrin of its citizens who welcomed the calamity.
These 5 individuals are far from normal, and their lives are disrupted due to the international upheaval theyre thrusted BACK into; these 5 once belonged to a terrorist organization that no longer technically exists, but only does now because its leader has made the most of its remnants.
Now this leader of this shell of a terrorist organization, who was and is still (TECHNICALLY), the leader of these 5 special individuals - though they hav gone on to live normal lives since the destruction of the organization - wants his members back, to restore his organization back to the powerful, global power it was once.
And that's just the B PLOT....
The A plot is about an alien who fell from the asteroid that looks human but has no memory except of that of a device she has to find before her ex-partner finds it first.
This is pretty much the barebones synopsis of my novel that I took about 3 mins to quickly type... DOES ANYONE WANT TO HELP ME WRITE A LOGLINE BECAUSE IVE BEEN TRYING TO CREATE A SOLID ONE FOR....yup, 6 YEARS NOW.

Sure, I'll take a crack at it.
In order to make ammends for her past mistakes, a woman from another planet who has been living on Earth teams up with five mercenaries to try and find a powerful device...before someone else from her homeworld--someone VERY dangerous--finds it.

@@EricHeidenAuthor Much appreciated crack! This provides invaluable insight for how others may perceive another's work via their synopsis. Since I wrote this comment I actually came up with 3. Mind sharing which you like most?
Five former terrorists must abandoned their reformed lives to help the world heal from an asteroid event / alien threat.
Five former terrorists, now living in peace, are forced to act when a young alien threatens life in modern America.
To save lives, five terrorists must protect the world from an alien invasion and a deceitful government.
I may incorporate some elements that I gleaned from your response. Thanks!

    • @EricHeidenAuthor
      @EricHeidenAuthor Рік тому +5

Hey there! All 3 are good, but I liked the middle one the best. However, I would replace "alien" with "extraterrestrial" or "being from an alien world." Otherwise, whoever reads it might think the alien is just an ordinary human from another country.

(I know this is personally, and it's just an opinion...) But I consider people who have "resistance", to the need of making adjustments in order for their story to work, not actual artists. They are wannabe artists. (I'm not saying that's a bad thing), we need people to want to expand their horizons and exercise their creativity. However if they are not imaginative/creative enough to do so, they still have much to developing inside their mind, even if their heart's in the right place. So therefore, not artist yet.

i think she did a great job! we wouldn't have gotten this much information if she'd have taken it easy. i get the point you're trying to make but interviews aren’t a chat, they have a purpose to lift information and make it understandable - log lines seem to be notorious for being elusive to writers, so there was a greater need to dig into it.

"but you gotta admit she was going a little harder" ... "At some point I was expecting her to say, "I mean, what is your problem, Jen?!?"""
You... don't seem to understand the point of these interviews. Let me be a little more blunt.
There are confrontational interviews and there are presentational interviews. This is non-confrontational. This is sort of like when sports broadcasters make a list of points to make during a post-game broadcast and the mouthpieces comes up with a list of questions so that the analysts can make their point.
To use American Football terminology... someone wants to make a point that the quarterback fumble in the 3rd quarter was a result of the fact that the backup center has only done long-snapping... you have the interviewer ask the analysis "So... do you think that 3rd quarter fumble was a result of lack of experience of by backup center?"
The interviewer absolutely knows what happened. That's not the point of the question. The point of the question is to give the person answering the questions a jumping off point.
..... because that is what the person answering the question wants.
Nearly all of these answers could have started with "I'm so glad you asked that question, because I've been wanting to make that point and now I get to"
Now... this Q&A wasn't nearly as blatant as all of that. Nor am I saying it was pre-scripted. I believe it absolutely was not. But in terms of intent... it 100% was the PURPOSE of the non-combative interview.
"People are going to ask these questions, so I want to give you the opportunity to pre-empt their questions by giving you a jumping off point to respond"
