A beautiful garden, but even more I appreciate your presenting style: a rare mix of enthusiasm and humility. A reverence for the beauty of God's creation. Many thanks and best wishes from England
I sure hope my Incrediball Hydrangeas get that big and beautiful. Jackmani clematis is a great choice. I will be watching for the progress of the David Austin roses. Love David Austin. Wonderful selections. Thanks for sharing.
I love your garden! It’s lovely! You might over time bump your borders out from the fence to give it more cottage-y feel. A staggered line of bushes is going to give you a much more dense/lush/exuberant feeling in the garden vs a linear planting. Plus, like you’ve already seen with your Gaura-Perrenials want some depth to the bed when they’re happy. They’ll fill it out! And it’s these staggered layers and happy full-size plants that really give off that cottage vibe.
The plan is to def bump out the garden beds, but for now the kiddos love the grass. In time as they slowly stop using it, I plant to add a modern koi pond close to the house and bump those beds out 3-4 ft. The plans are bursting already and the beds should have no soil by May. Very excited! Thanks for your tips and ideas :0)
❤ I would definitely say you Accomplish the cottage garden what a great job 👍 My grandmother's gr8 aunts great grandmother all had cottage gardens.15 years ago I created mine zone 8A Rehoboth Beach Delaware changes little every year never ending.
The sunshine cutting through the video is gorgeous! We're blessed to pull off the cottage garden look really easily here (lots of rain, helps). Can't wait to see how yours progresses!
You did an amazing job. Beautiful garden!! I think you should paint your fence black to continue the modern aesthetic. All of your gorgeous plants will pop.
😆 I wanted to paint the fences too but my wife didn’t love the idea. The 80ft back fence in time will be covered by star Jasmine - if it ever decides to take off and grow. 😕
First time seeing your channel. You've done a wonderful job with your beautiful space, and I can't wait to see the progression. Really enjoyed your presentation.
So happy I found your channel! I’m in California too, zone 9b, and am trying to do a mix of cottage and formal-ish/Hamptons style garden. My back fence is 50ft long, so not as long as yours, but like you said, trying to plant that up is hard!
HAHAHA.....yes my first attempt at an 80ft border was def a fail. I am hopeful that next spring its the highlight of the garden. We shall see. I will have to check out Hamptons Style 🙂
I was born and raised, and live, in San Diego. Not just the county but basically downtown! Or uptown, I suppose…so moving to a little cottage style house in 2012 was an no-brained for me, when I first saw the property, and its front yard, porch, side yard, and curb appeal! I wanted to create a "California cottage garden". And I did! Lol. And obviously a lot of people garden here; I don’t think our location is a hindrance at all to designing a garden. In fact, we have an expanded palette of plants to choose from, compared to traditional British cottage gardens, and much of the northern hemisphere! 🤣 Minus a few more temperate, cooler-climate species, and for those we have just as many suitable replacements. For example, even though we can totally grow _Verbena bonariensis_ in SoCal, an even hardier, evergreen alternative is the orchid genus _Epidendrum_ which flowers in a similar way, and a lot longer. Plus it’s an orchid that can handle sun and grow terrestrially, in well-draining soil. Or instead of certain grasses or leafy species, like _Phormium_ (New Zealand flax), the _Cymbidium_ orchids are a perfect evergreen substitute. And that’s not even counting all the cacti, succulents, tropicals, bromeliads, aroids, etc.!
Beautiful gardens! I think if you're planting things that have blooms with interesting shapes or very geometric shapes or plants with growth habits in interesting or bold shapes, the cottage theme will absolutely work with modern architecture! I was thinking, "oooh, he should put guara in his garden and then you showed those! 😄 I've had Whirling Butterflies, which is supposed to get 3-4' and would get 4-5' for me here in south central Texas. 😄 I think when you live in a mild climate, plant sizes are more of a suggestion than a rule. 🤣 Those Incrediball hydrangeas are outstanding!! Amazing! Spectacular! You have a really good eye for garden layout and plant selection! Glad I happened across your video, I will definitely check out some of the varieties you mentioned. Very interested in those gardenias as a "boxwood" substitute!
Thank you Dawn….the garden still has a long way to go, but I appreciate the comments. I originally plant 8 “dwarf Gaura” and since they go so huge I’m down to 3….I moved 4 others to the back bed. Crazy how plants have a mind of their own 😊❤️
I'm SO happy to have found your channel! I enjoy gardening but so many channels are about gardens in the Midwest or Eastern US. I live in Zone 9 also in California. Although my yard isn't as large as yours, I've wanted a cottage style garden as well. You've given me inspiration & guidance. Can't wait to see how my garden (and yours) takes shape over the next year. Many thanks♡
Deb, thank you.....your kind words are very very appreciated. ❤The garden has a long way to go, but I am very hopeful for next year. YES! When I was looking for inspiration and studying cottage gardens, I noticed most of them were located in zones 4-6. It's easy to tell because their hydrangeas are in full sun and often plants like coral bells and hostas are listed as sun perennials....they would get roasted in full sun here 😆
@@intheglenn That's so true! Thanks for your reply. I'd like to try one of the hydrangeas you mentioned - knowing how thirsty they get may change my mind. After all the rain, half of the backyard was nothing but 3ft weeds bc the small lawn failed when it was so dry. Am now looking at a lawn alternative. Am rambling a bit, so I'll end for now. Thanks again :)
You have made a great start. California can make a liar of a plant tag. There doesn't have to be a mistake made, just a failure to recognize the effect of the weather of Northern Calufornia.
I’m also in California, East Contra Costa Co. African Blue Basil is an awesome perennial grown for its beautiful purplish flowers that attract bees. It works well as a border plant here and smells wonderful. It’s hard to find and sells out quickly. 😺😺
Just stumbled on you channel and am impressed with what you have going on. I also love the David Austin roses. It is inspiring to see a modern man go for the "cottage" vibe. Good luck and it is beautiful!
Hey Rene....the garden is far from where I want it to be, but thank you. I think my love for cottage gardens started when I bought my first David Austin rose. 😁
Maybe someday. I generally focus more on the flower color and I tend to like the soft colors like white, soft pink and apricot. I am hopeful to buy Roald Dahl, Charles Darwin and maybe Queen of Sweeden.
@@intheglenn Roald Dahl is amazing, but doesn't have a scent. Queen of Sweeden drops its flowers in a couple days so a tricky one and no scent. I've just noticed you had Princess Anne and Gertrude is very similar in color so maybe you can find a spot next to them:) I promise it's worth it, it's a reliable fragrance machine:)
@@vorong2ru I have seen so many people complain that GK needs to be staked because she is somewhere between a tall rose and a climber. Is that the case with yours?
@@intheglenn it just needs to be pruned back if it grows those octopus canes, it has a tendency to climb so if you plant it next to the wall you can potentially tie it in. Mine is growing in a semi shade and stays in the bush form pretty well..
I bought them on Amazon: Step2 Claremont Tall Round Planter Pot, Terracotta - Large Planter for Outdoor/Indoor Use - Maintenance Free Design - Ideal Patio and Front Porch Planter - Measures 19" x 19" x 18" a.co/d/5TBCQ7D However I just ordered two more from Walmart and got 2 for $60! You’ll simple remove the shallow self watering part with a utility knife.

Thank you so much. I am glad you enjoyed the video. Stay tuned for the garden tour coming soon :0)
I really like your plant style. You have done a great job combining beautiful colors and plants.
Thank you....I am very excited for things to mature this year - stay tuned!
