- RIO DE JANEIRO VAN LIFE - Everyone Told Us Not To Go to Rio!
Snow and Curt are seasoned Van Life Travelers. They have taken their Camper Van to all kinds of places throughout Mexico, Central America, and South America... but, never have they heard more warnings than for Rio De Janeiro Brazil! Everyone... and we mean everyone told them that the city is not safe, especially with a van! "You will get robbed, drugged, kidnapped, or worse in this city." But, as they have always done, they dug in and did their own research. They did not rely on the media and they tuned out most of the comments... especially since 90% of the safety warnings were coming from people that had never been to the city. They did not decide to take their van to Rio on a whim... there was much research to find the perfect campsite and to find the best way to see the city. So, come along in this episode to see some of the magical and beautiful sites that this notorious city has to offer!

Brazil truly is the land of contrasts, as we like to call it "Aquarela do Brasil" or Brazilian watercolor wheel". From state to state, from city to city and as this beautiful video showed sometimes from neighborhood to neighborhood the changes can be so dramatic! Such an underrated country that deserves so much more love and respect!
❤❤❤❤❤
Visited Rio in 1977 and stayed in a hotel across from Copacabana Beach. Remember the wide decorated sidewalks and in the evenings, all the lovers making out on benches…..lol. I, too, went up to Sugar Loaf Mountain and saw Christ the Redeemer monument up close. Thanks for all your great views here!
16:33 you guys have just been blessed by the Brazilian entity of love and respect, the Vira-lata Caramelo ( caramel street dog). Congrats!
HAHA THE CARAMELO STRAY DOG !! IS A BRAZIL'S TREASURE!
Hi Snow and Curt greetings from Tasmania, I really enjoyed this tour around Rio, Simon did a great job showing you some of the best spots, loved the cathedral library the tiled stairs, the food at the restaurant Simon took you to looked so good, Sugarloaf the beaches, great vlog, thanks for taking us around Rio.🙏👍❤️
Wow and wow! I loved the beehive cathedral and the amazing library. Sugarloaf was pretty cool as well. What an amazing city. As always, thanks for taking us along. 🤗❤️
Glad you enjoyed it!
Visitem o museu imperial ... é simplesmente fantástico!
As a Copacabana resident, seeing Curt all happy when you guys entered the neighborhood made me smile, just love when tourists enjoy our city
💝💖💗 What a fantastic tour of Rio de Janeiro. Of special interest to me was the gorgeous cathedral of course. The stain glass windows were breathtaking!!! The library was spectacular!!! All those books!!! Wonder if anyone can read them??? The beautiful steps! The view! The beautiful views everywhere!!! And ending with a taste of what is to come! You are killing us. AND I cannot forget the food! Amazing!! I think I may be telling you that I just loved this video!!! Thank you for taking me along today! And Snow, you were looking as lovely as always. Love your red blouse. Noticed your blue dress a few videos ago that you had bought earlier. Was so pretty on you. You always look so nice. Take care! Until the next video! ❇❇❇
😊😊😊😊😊 thanks for the kind words
That is one of the ugliest cathedral in the world. I'm a brazilian catholic and I don't like this Babel Tower.

@@Heewson National cultural heritage.
Thank you for all of the amazing location names!!! Awesome 😎
You guys are in SUCH better shape than when you first got to Mexico!!! You are meeting your goals!
Rio is so large and diverse. This is the way to see a big city. Hire out a local driver / guide. They always know to best places to go. And you can sit back and see it all without a worry. Brazil is just so amazing. Thank you for Sharing.
Yes, hiring a guide was very smart of them! I liked the initiative.
I agree, you get to learn the story behind the landmarks. Also they guy knows how to get from point A to point B. Very good investment, if you can afford.
One of your best vlogs. Never knew Rio was so interesting. Simon did Rio justice.
There are much more to see...
Wow, so much beauty and so diverse. City, beach, mountain jungle. And I love a good library!
That castle is like something out of a fairytale! As for the cathedral… well that was so special. Brazil has been such an adventure with you both. Your tour guide really got to you as many spots as possible.
Am looking forward to your visit to the Christ The Redeemer vlog but then I sit in anticipation of every vlog you post as it is such a tonic. ❤
To be honest, it is a bit sad you didn’t do this tour on a hot, sunny, clear sky day! Rio de Janeiro is completely different on a sunny day, you can feel the heat, the energy, the full beach with people doing sports, bathing, walking. And the scenario is much more beautiful in a sunny day as well! Sugar loaf on sunsets…
But you had a taste of it and thats what matters!
Beautiful city! My parents lived in Rio-but that was before I was born, unfortunately. My father was a photographer though, so I grew up studying his amazing black and white photos, and I dreamt of visiting the iconic sights. You make me remember my childhood dreams. …. Time to start making travel plans! And in the meantime, I can’t wait for your next video. Thank you for such a wonderful Saturday morning gift.
My goodness, what a treat to see all those murals. So beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing. ♥
In Porto Maravilha, there are huge wonderful murals, graffities by a Brazilian artist Cobra (one of the best of the world). Wow/impressive ones!
That library and church 😯. .this video is amazing. You guys do an awesome job showcasing places & things that people might never see or know about. Having a tor guide seemed like it made your trip more enjoyable so you could sight see wthout worrying about driving or parking. Im excited to see the next video
I'm Brazilian and I've been to Rio de Janeiro dozens of times, and I was amazed the first time I saw so much beauty, thank you for caring about Brazil, hugs.
Hari OM
Having a personal, local guide is always worth the money, I feel, for places such as this. Simon did you proud! YAM xx
Totally agree!
Thank you 🙏 Thank you for the opportunity to view this amazing city and the Tour Guide-Wonderful I appreciate that you both have taken us all along on this wonderful journey….
Glad you enjoyed it!
Beautiful tour! Thank you so much. Those stairs were wonderful. Can’t wait for your next video!!
Glad you enjoyed!
The Church & Library were incredible! Simon is a great tour guide! Snow was that famous song Peter Allen’s ‘I Go To Rio’? 🎼🎶🎶🎶🎤🎷🎹 travel safely ❤️
You guys have to visit Buzios! Charming small city with great nightlife, gorgeous warm water beaches and nice views. You guys are gonna love it!
I am a follower of you guys and I confess that I always look forward to your publications. The pattern of you outwardly in the education and respect with which you treat the people you know and the countries you visit. Even what for us Brazilians is considered a pain, you attribute a respectful comment. I like it a lot!
Absolutely breathtaking scenery !
I love seeing all the different creative art people do , thankyou for showing all the varied aspects of the places you visit 😃 ❤
Those little monkeys are so cute 💕
Glad you enjoyed it
The cathedral and library were spectacular! It would be worth the trip for these two spots. Wow!
I had to rewind to see the toucan graffiti painting toward the beginning of your film. It was perfect. Just loved it.
You've taken me places I'll never see.... but I like living my life vicariously through your eyes. Thank you so much
The huge Graffities by Kobra (not Cobra, sorry) in Porto Maravilha (Pier, downtown)...I guess you will love it.
Wow, Rio could entertain you for quite some time and your guide was great! Looking forward to your next guided tour and hope the sun comes out for it!💕🇨🇦
I hope so too!
Thanks for this wonderful tour. Did not want it to end. Looking forward to your next day with Simon. That was a great idea hiring a guide and keeping van safe and in place at the campground.
Now I want to take vacation! When I went to Rio I didn't see all of this wonders. Thank you for this journey!
Great tour of Rio, you did an amazing job of showing us the true city, not just the tourist hot spots. thanks, guys, looking forward to next week!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing! It's funny because I want to do a similar tour and drive down through mexico and almost follow same route as you and my kids are having a fit saying its so dangerous. From what I can see its no more dangerous than any other country. I would no longer call American safe with all the guns in the hands of nuts so what makes it any different? As long as you are respectful and step on no toes by being a rude tourist it should be perfect. As always love you guys and thanks for bringing us all along on your adventures.
In some areas of Rio and also Brazil, it is very dangerous to go. But if one avoids those areas, then it might be as risky as in USA.
My husband and I love the videos! Amazing, and your historical reviews are amazing! Thank you for taking us along.
Glad you like them!
Welcome to visit Minas Gerais historical cities and birth of most liked food, cheese rolls just aside Rio de Janeiro state. Our state is just one hour from Rio and continues 1000 miles - 1600 km up northwest or west. Just same land area of France. Full of great places to visit, lots of wild birds, nice food, cheap prices. Mountains and flat landscapes. Top ranked cheese types, all hand made.
Congratulations, Snow and Curt! You have taken your followers advice seriously. If you continue to go North, take similar precautions in Salvador. The rest of the country is fine.
Wonderful video, as always...
Thanks for the tips!
Você nao sabe o que diz.
What a truly amazing video! It was beautifully done. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!
The food 😱😱😋😋😋 Simon seem like a very nice guy ! Glad you got a good guide 🙂 Thank you for the trip 🙂
My magical place in Rio is the Botanical Garden.
The old pier place where there is now the Future Museum, Candelaria church and streets with old colonial houses is also beautiful downtown (center of Rio). That part of city was fixed for the Olimpic Games 2014. Just nice to walk there.Porto Maravilha( pier fixed for the Olimpic games), I guess.
What a neat trip around Rio de Janeiro. The table look like it was a lot of fun. And the view from it is wonderful. What a nice shot of Christ the Redeemer couldn't see it a whole lot but it was there. I'm looking forward to seeing it in your next video what a wonderful trip we took this morning. God bless and I'll see you on Wednesday.
Thanks, @cgreen186!
I’m finally awake high snow and Curt and kitties , so pretty not to many sites left in the world today . ❤❤❤❤ be safe guys pray with you ! 😊 have a nice weekend too!
What an incredible tour!!! Thank you ❤️
Our pleasure!
Amo o canal de vocês! Quando vierem a São Paulo venha conhecer nossa cidade! Chamada Campos do Jordão
Hi both
Wow you are both having an adventure. This place is so awesome and the people are so friendly and make you feel welcome. At least you have a guide to show you the sights
Much love and respect from across the pond in Uk x
What an amazing city! Having a tour guide is brilliant. I wanted to taste all those creative dishes. Thank you so much for this video!
Absolutely gorgeous views myself I'm not sure I'd do the height I'd see it from the ground.stay safe BLESSED BE ❤
Spot on
Think I’d want Simon to show us Rio. It looks like a perfect fit . I so love the quirky artistic neighborhoods as well as old world charm and natures spaces within. Young couple on You Tube have moved into The first certified tiny house that is starting the trend in Brazil. You all could shepard that as part of your future plans. I am intrigued and looking to your day 2+
Our personalities meshed perfectly.... That's not always the case with a guide! We got lucky 😃
I love seeing that you are both having a lot of fun even in a cloudy day. Make sure you visit the Tijuca National Forest, I am sure you will love.
Snow and Curt, go to the Forte do Leme Hill and then go see the sunset in Arpoador beach!
Aterro do Flamengo and its beach view. Bahia da Guanabara and Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas. Favorite views by car in Rio.
There are nice places to go hiking and trails around Nature in Rio.
Hang Gliding in Pedra Bonita is also beautiful view and interesting.
Using a local guide with trustful references is the way to go. The city is not only big but confusing and good stuff sometimes are "hidden" by bad or complicated stuff like the "bar" you guys visited, hidden pearls!
Brazil remained an empire after the independence in 1822, with the royal family directly connected to the portuguese royal family and the Habsburgs. That Royal Library, like many other classic imperial buildings, parks, nature reserve, botanical gardens, etc. were made between 1822 and 1888, before the Republic, a few even before independence, but most afterwards, specially after the second emperor took the throne (his father actually moved to the Portuguese throne and left him as regent at an early age). The city of Petrópolis, going up the hills, was actually were the emperor had a summer home, basically owning most of the area of the current city, with many historical buildings, not to mention he gave some land to german colonists, being one of the first german colonies in Brazil.
My favorite historicam colonial city in Brazil is Ouro Preto in Minas Gerais state: the first city in Brazil to get the title of UNESCO world heritage
@@nadirmachadogoncalves7066 Minas Gerais has a rich History and architecture from colonial times.
Ouro Preto is great to visit when it isn't Carnaval, well if you aren't a college student looking for a messy fun 😅😂
Love Rio through your eyes!!
Oi, bom dia. Hi, G'morning, Welcome to Rio guys. 😎
Hello there!
Rio is stunningly breathtaking. Thanks for sharing 👍 😊❤
Sugestion: go hiking in different trails with nature and beautiful views. Wow! Rio is stunning. When the sun is shinning, it is special. I hope you have the chance to enjoy that.
Thank you for sharing incredible views of Rio with us!
When you get to Portugal you will see beautiful tile work, mainly blue, white black and yellow
This is the way to see Rio! Thanks for taking me along.
You bet
This was an very well presented video loved the history and the sights were awesome hiring a personal guide was a great idea
I’m glad to have found your vlogs. Very grateful to see all these beautiful sites! Thank you.
Thanks for providing such an amazing video experience of Rio! Rio looks much better on clear and sunny days, but at least you guys visited one of the Brazil's major cities. Thanks, Snow and Curt!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Welcome to my hometown!!!
Thank you for the tour, Rio looks amazing! 😊❤
Our pleasure! Glad you enjoyed it 😊
RJ continua lindo, as praias, regiões do lagos, rios, cachoeiras, jardim botânico, quinta da Boa Vista, museu da manhã, cidades praianas, morro da Urca, Cristo Redentor,pão de açúcar.
17:06 I'm brazilian and the food the guide took you to eat isn't typical Brazilan food. Typical food is "feijoada", Barbecue Steak houses, pão de queijo, pastel, acarajé, açai, carne de sol, brigadeiro, COXINHA, tapioca...etc
We know it wasn't traditional Brazilian food ... we have eaten tons of that. We asked for quick and different! 😁
Chegou atrasado, eles sabem disso.
I enjoyed the drive through the streets to see the real city, as well as the famous sites and “locals” places. A private guide is the way t go, if you want to experience the heart and spirit of a place. ✌️❤️🇧🇷
Sorry, but they just went to tourist attraction places in Rio. Santa Tereza is a tourist neighbourhood too. Nice people there.
They just went to Rio's tourist places.
Epic, spectacular and awesome ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉enjoy 😂😂
Thanks 😆
Rio!! What a city❤❤❤
North of Rio is the State of Espírito santo stop by Vitória, vila velha beautiful beach towns, the capital is an island very developed, and an hour away in the mountains you have domingo Martins and all it's German, polish beauty
Good Morning and I hope you're doing a good and safe visit. Looking foward your next video from Christ The Redeemer.
One of your best. You are fortunate people and you appreciate that.
Your videos are always fascinating but this one particularly was so interesting. Thank you for taking us along on your fabulous journey.
Glad you enjoyed it
Loved this video…what a great idea to have a guide to show you the best of Rio. The cable car trip was wonderful. The neighbourhood looked very ‘hipster’ lol…well done on putting off the Redeemer visit on day one ❤❤❤
Glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing visit. Loved the area. Simon is a lovely person xx
You guys are very welcome in Brazil, feel at home.
Fascinating tour!
While in the state of Rio de Janeiro, you guys could go meet the city in the interior called Armação dos Búzios, where you shall find a really cozy small city with great night life and awarded restaurants and one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. As a natural of this state, I assure you it's beyond Caribbean level.
I loved the library!
It is like big cities all over the world if you don't go to favelas. You should pay attention and dress in a simple way, no gold jewerly or expensive itens on display... In my experience I had no problem in Rio. Some people had, I am aware of it too.
@@nadirmachadogoncalves7066, I politely disagree. Rio is on another level. If you have time, watch the Brazilian blockbuster Tropa de Elite in order to understand Rio better. I don't know the movie American title.
@@jennerjcruzful I respect your desagrement. Another point of view. Thank you. I just want to stress the sentence I wrote: "...if you don't go to favelas". I excluded the favelas of my comments. Foreigners that likes to visit favelas. Those excellent films you mention are happening mainly in favelas in Rio. They are great tips.
It is required to be humble in the way you wear and should carry cheap things. Pay attention with local tips. Be careful with taxis that want you to pay more ( the only city in Brazil that some of those professionals are smart in a bad way).
Did I like it? I loved this video! Great job.. I love it when both y'all narrate too
Yay! Thank you!
Lindo Rio de janeiro
Wow! I got to do that for free!! Great to get a tour guide. Only place I would rather see in person is the library ❤
I really enjoyed this change of pace video! Very interesting and beautiful sites and yummy looking food.
Glad you enjoyed it!
just amazing. wow! wow! what memories you will have one day. ☺
I know!!
Blessings to you both! Thank you for sharing another awesome video! ❤️🙏🏻

Thanks, @deloriswathen6183!
O Rio é bom conhecer assim, além do cartão postal.
Welcome home🥰💝 my memory growing up...just so many wonderful moments, great and big family and friends, school and plus...my loving scouting since I was 5 camping up in the mountains ...you have lots to visit💫 the library is similar to Coimbra, Portugal historical university with a lot of the fishing library
You could visit the Gavea Stone and fly hang gliding... Is amazing!
Loved this video ❤
So glad!
My best friend was born in Rio ❤
You need to look up to Botanical Garden
Sempre é bom estar com vocês!
