I’ve done a similar strategy by adding new variations to an existing product with thousands of good reviews. Once the new variant was added, I dropped the price of the original product to steal sales away from my competitors who are racing to the bottom while keeping my new variant at a higher price because it has beneficial features that no other competitor has. I then gave the variations a unique trademarked name and protected the new variant with a design patent and utility patent to prevent my competitors from copying it. It’s a dog eat dog world in Amazon!
