Parents of talented children should not only teach them discipline and work ethic, but the philosophy behind what makes them important and how they'll benefit in life later. Talent alone can only go so far before obstacles are met. Then you'll inevitably be met with the 'WHY', especially if you're American, and 'because I said so' doesn't motivate anyone. Don't underestimate the understanding or ambition of a 4, 5, 6 etc year old. Once they 'get it' they'll excel like you won't believe.
