The Beatles - The End - Guitar Cover

- The EPIC guitar masterpiece that closes the Abbey Road album! One of the final songs the Beatles recorded together, "The End" features solos by all members of the band, including an extended section of trading guitar solos by Paul, George and John. The rest of the song likewise features tight guitar parts by George and John, showing that their guitar chemistry was ever present until the end.

The basic track for "The End" was recorded on July 23, 1969, and photos from the session show George playing his red Lucy Gibson Les Paul and John on his sanded Epiphone Casino. The photos reveal that John was experimenting with a capo at the 5th fret, however, the low E notes heard on his presumed recorded guitar part contradict this. Based on my analysis of the guitar parts (and assuming George played the bending lead parts at the beginning), John did not perform the final version of "The End" with the capo.
After the first few bends, both guitars play a mostly chromatic walkup, with both parts blending to sound like one giant guitar (0:04). This is accomplished by John playing a lower, more tightly harmonized walkup with George playing a part that includes a monotonous A note on the first three notes (C#, D, D#). George then transitions to playing single notes for the E, F, and F# notes (0:05). To conclude the phrase, George plays a bluesy lick while John smacks muted E and A power chords (0:07).
Not much changes for the repeat of the introduction (0:11). However, John's guitar on the chromatic walkup sounds a little bit more distorted, so I increased the volume of my Epiphone Casino just beforehand (0:13).
After Ringo's drum solo, both guitars play a repeating A7 to D7 pattern. For the very first hit of A7, John's guitar is slightly muted, and for the second hit, he plays a lower, growling power chord (0:20). The A7 chord George plays features a more prominent G note, leading me to believe he played his A7 in the open position. However, the voicing of this A7 chord is the same as the one John plays at the 5th fret, except for the high A note. This means that George might have played in the same positions as John, but the loud G note leads me to believe he played it in the way shown in the video. John's guitar part has a clear high D note on the D7 chords, meaning he played it at the 10th fret. Starting at 0:35, John played the D7 chord with a high E note, which he repeats until 4 repetitions before the end of the solo section.
Now the solo section begins! (0:40). The solos were recorded live on the floor of Abbey Road Studio 2 in one take on August 7, 1969. The section features blistering guitar phrasing by Paul, George, and John, each with a slightly different sound. Paul's phrases tend to be in your face single note lines, while George plays Clapton-esque bends and vibrato. John's guitar is extremely distorted, and his phrasing tends to include Chuck Berry style double stops.
One point of analysis is exemplified by this awesome solo section. None of the Beatles are particularly exemplarily improvisers. Throughout their careers, they largely favored planning and forethought with their recordings and live performances. This is evidenced by listening to recordings of the Beatles where the solos are played similarly again and again ("I Saw Her Standing There", live), as well as the fact that solos were often left to be overdubbed so they could be composed. Having said this, The Beatles are masterful composers, meaning that their guitar solo phrasing was often unlike any of their more improvisational peers, which had a tendency to repeat similar pentatonic scale licks. As mentioned in Geoff Emerick's book, the Beatles took time to think about what they would play for "The End" solo section, and the phrases that were put to tape are, to this day, still unique.
There is a lot of pickup switching during the solo section. George uses the middle pickup for his second phrase, and the click is audible during the end of Paul's solo (0:55). John likewise changes from the neck pickup to the bridge back to the neck. George plays an extraneous A note at 1:05.

I love how these three very distinct men each played three very distinct guitar solos that somehow all reflected on their personalities.
Right??
It's probably my favorite Moment on Abbey Road. Not my favorite song or anything, but the dueling solos is pure Bliss for Me as a Beatlemaniac knowing the story behind that bit.
Right?! John’s bluesy guitar playing, George’s smooth and creative guitar playing and Paul’s flashy quick and accurate guitar playing makes this song amazing
@@thisistheway5301 I love the story that Yoko was toddeling behind to go in with them and John says, "Not his time, luv. I'll only be a minute to knock this out." Then a time machine takes them back to 1964 and no chicks in the studio. What fun!
The bass track with "love you ... love you ... love you"... very cool. It is the backbone for the guitar battle experiment.

Jajaja pretty funny
Her majesty’s a pretty nice girl someday I’m gonna make her mine oh yeah, someday I’m gonna make her mine
You can totally tell which solo John is playing
Paul - The Flourisher Style
George - The Technical Style
John - The Gritty Style
Flourisher?
Omega157 Fast
John is the *LOUD* style
Yes u can definitely hear John's guitar, a most underrated guitarist, just listen to his first solo album to hear his genius, John, Ringo and the Mighty Klouse Vorman, that's some 3 peice band
@@omega1575 “flourisher” = flourishes, i.e., melodic notes all over the place like paul’s past guitar solos on taxman, sgt. pepper, good morning good morning, etc.
A really good Beatles guitar tutor once said "when playing a John part, you need to play like you're mad at the guitar, beat that thing like it owes you money." I never really thought of it like that, but it's true...from the beginning, right on through to the end. Genious.
...and I remember who you are talking about.. I have not seen or chatted with M Sokil in years... He could play he heck out of his old ric tho..
Michael Sokil himself!
@@jeffmclawhorn7401 he's back on youtube
@Thomasfan244 Yes he is back, and doing terrific instrumental recreations of Beatles tunes, going chronically album by album.
,,And in the end the love you take it's equal to the love you make" perfect closing line for the greatest band of all time
Couldn't agree more. Legendary!
No drum solo 😭
i mean it's a GUITAR cover

I'm waiting for the whole God damn medley
It was soooo perfect that they all 3 exchanged solos at the end of THE END. Just perfect
And that last line 😍
right after Ringo did his solo ;)
I find this video such a good representation of what they were actually doing in the studio, it seems so cool the idea of 3 Beatles battling it out on guitars
The first ever recorded guitar PVP
0:40 The duel of the fates
You nailed John's part! It's so distorted that you would think you can strum anything and get away with it, but it's a very specific set of notes and you got it! Will be using this for reference at some point.
Amazing, I love how you yourself play the appropriate model guitar for each section. Amazing
George Harrison is the Sun King
Lennon is the Rain king. It is about people moaning about the weather ... Don't let the sun catch you.
Ringo used a similar line in a tribute song for John
'Here comes the sun is about you' - Never without You
The tribute to george you mean
Impeccable...
Amazing playing
Nailed tone. Specially on John's guitar. And is specially amazing that you can see on the solo battle the tone flavour they had during their career: Paul, crunchy and mellow; George, with sustain, finesse and the Leslie speaker giving a hand; and John distorted and aggresive.
Is like watching at John, Paul and George doing it on 1969
I really love it!!!
Thank you! Indeed, it's really cool to hear each Beatles' personality shine through on this one. I should mention though that it does not sound like George used a Leslie Speaker on his guitar solo, just finger vibrato. Although John did use one for the ending bit!
@@mattiboo Well, both using leslies like in Octopus's Garden, I guess
But yeah, is awesome to see that from them in this track! Plus the unsophisticated but meticulous solo from Ringo, what a way they found to show us the end of an era.
Not so much to say, Keep it going!!!
The three-part solo was apparently recorded using just one take and, obviously, they nailed it. It makes me a bit wistful, though, because they had quit touring several years before recording Abbey Road and this song is a reminder of how awesome it would have been to see them in concert at the peak of their playing abilities.
Waiting for I Want You(She's So Heavy),Because and Hapiness Is A Warm Gun
hell yeh
Awesome as usual. John, Paul and George trading licks is legendary!
I always love how at 1:00 it sounds like John just can't bend the string all the way. Really grounds them as human
Ringo left the chat
What a way to end a band with this amazing
Yes, This truly is the Beatle's at their epic sound.
Every day I open up UA-cam hoping for a new Mattiboo video, usually to be disappointed. But wait! What do we have today? Perhaps The Beatles' most important composition. As the kids say, OMG! Did the boys know...was it a conscious decision to put this track last and give everyone (including Ringo!) a solo? You know, like a way of saying goodbye? Brilliant! They all had very distinct styles of playing, no? I notice that John seemed to favor playing up the neck all the time. Was it more comfortable for him? Did he just have short arms?
And of course, your rendition of this piece is flawless, Matty. I mean, the effort you put into these things...awesome! So glad you had time to do this for us - what a treat! We thank you. Hope all is going well with school ;-)
Oh, and LOVE the shirt!
Thank you very much! I think it was a conscious decision to have 'The End' be a rocking conclusion to their final album. The whole concept with Abbey Road was to put aside their differences and frustration with the 'Let It Be' project and end The Beatles on a high note. Indeed, each guitar playing Beatles' style really comes through here! I can't speak to John's preferences, but he did favor the short scale Ric 325 for a few years, so it is reasonable to assume he liked his frets spaced a little closer.
@@mattiboo - I haven't listened to the whole album in its entirety in a long, long time. We all listen in a very fractured way now this cut and that cut. But thinking back, I do recall how the ending of Abbey Road just left you breathless! I don't think that I understood that it was the *three* of them soloing - all I knew was that it was a jaw-droppingly kick-ass piece of music, and when it was suddenly over you were left there, staring at the stereo and going, "Daaaaaamn."
Thanks for letting me relive it :-)
It's just been reported that a recording was found of John, Paul, and George discussing a followup LP to Abbey Road after completing the mixing of that LP. The notion that they had decided that it would be their last work and that they should go out with a bang has been debunked. In a recent interview where the topic of this tape came up, Ringo said, “We did do Abbey Road and we was like, ‘Okay that’s pretty good…but none of us said, ‘OK, that’s the last time we’ll ever play together. Nobody said that. I never felt that. … We’d made this record, and then we would go off and do whatever we wanted to do. And then Paul would call us and say, ‘Hey, you want to go in the studio lads?’ and we’d do another one. So it was not the end-because in the end the love you take is equal to the love you make. So I never felt it was in stone.”
EPIC.

Interesting. Makes sense, though. From an artistic standpoint, going in to record 'Abbey Road' with the idea in mind that it would be the Last One Ever might've put a lot of unneeded weight on the proceedings, perhaps inhibiting creativity or inordinately influencing their decision making. I wouldn't want to work with that hanging over my head, but some thrive under that kind if pressure. At any rate, things worked out quite nicely, and on a high note.
Sir Mattiboo makes me want to go back to the beginning and start all over again.
That Les Paul is just stunning. Always love seeing your vids, it's good to see your playing and videography improving over the years.
That’s such a beautiful piece
This is an excellent example of why the Beatles were in a class by themselves and why they are so important to rock music
Thank You Lord for such talented musicians
this is the best recreation of the solos i've seen
Thank you!
I opened my youtube homepage with a smile today.
You don't understand. You've just answered a question of mine that I've had as a Beatles fan of decades. I had a feeling of who did what but now I get to see it. This is so awesome
These videos are brilliant fella, for a lifelong beatles fan and a guitar dabbler it's just gold dust, thanks so much
For some reason The End always brings tears to my eyes.
Your playing is always impeccable. I simply can’t believe that you can play all of these songs so well. I need a trackless, unedited, raw video of you playing and then I’ll believe it.
I've waited for this video so long! Outstanding performance as usual!
Wow! This is so good! I’m amazed! Nice guitar sounds to. Well done 👍
Maravilloso...un placer escucharte...gracias por compartir tu talento...saludos y bendiciones desde Argentina
Ringo could manage to build a enourmous crescendo starting at 0:23. I've always love to pay attention to it.
Very true. He slowly opens the hi hat and gets louder and louder until the drums are at their peak. Perfect.
Thank you for the video ! You make me realize that each note is a beautiful note ! They were no shredders (it did not exist in that era) but they knew how to sound pretty...
Finally! After months of waiting. Great cover as usual!
Buenisimo!! Excelente!! Felicitaciones por el desempeño de esta tremenda pieza final del álbum Abbey Road, la cumbre de The Beatles!! me pican los dedos por tocarla jajaja gracias!!
Stunning content. Straight up balls on perfect. Well done sir!
The Best cover of the End, those solos sound so similar to the originals
Hey MB!! It's so great to see and hear you again. I hope that I don't embarrass you, but I'm not at all ashamed to admit that by the end of this video, I cried like a baby. Great to see you my friend, Just like all of your content, you nailed this. Superb! Thanks for sharing it. Talk to you down the road. Take care.
That was beautiful, man.
That last solo by George is just heart melting.
I believe that the three of them, George, Paul, and John, each had input to this piece.
It just feels like everything is melting away
Paul, George, then John, in that order.
@@BeatlesCentricUniverse I'm talking about the last bit which ends the song.
Ashish Panwar Yes, I meant my last response for Stephen Smith. I totally agree about George's last solo, where he slides up the neck into that beautiful bend and vibrato. But all his solos here are incredible. The actual last bit is John though.
Can’t stop watching this!
Their music NEVER GETS OLD!!!!!
And in the end,the guitar you play is the guitar you take.
Je ne comprends pas très bien l'anglais donc j'ai utilisé un traducteur et je suis stupéfait par ton analyse si précise et pertinente sur les différents solos, et ça enrichit mes connaissances sur les Beatles. Super travail. Merci Mike
Thank you so much for doing this, I enjoyed a ton! You did an awesome job on both the guitars and the research as you always do!
1:09 I had to rewatch that like 3 times thats how you do a bend got damn!
Thanks! All that Clapton vibrato practice is finally paying off :)

Nice work👍
Finally the video I have been waiting for!
Wow. Just wow. Note for note. Every bend, every inflection on the money. That's hours and hours and hours of disciplined
practice over weeks or maybe months or years even to CRUSH all three solos. And maybe that seems effusive to some
but THE END has long been the sword in the stone against which I measure my progress as a guitar player. You have
given me hope. Thank you, even though you kind of stuck it to Ringo.
Thank you! Unfortunately I couldn't keep Ringo's solo in this guitar mix.
