I'm definitely one of those dancers that love getting corrections because in my mind it means the teacher is paying attention to ME! And it means my dancing will only get better and better. 😋
LA Fresh Life I'm the same way! My main teacher (I have multiple ballet teachers) always corrects me but she also always reminds that she's doing it to make me a better dancer!
Corrections are great, that's what you take class for, what i don't like is comparisons and put downs. Teachers saying things like: go here because so and so is moving much faster and so on...it's so uncalled for. i notice how some teachers talk down to you, as an adult I really dislike that.
Fortunately, I've got lovely teachers! They are helpful without being condescending. One other lovely thing? We had a new girl (woman) in class- she was amazing, turns out she was/is a dancer at a company for a long time. Now, she is teaching us occasionally! and, I have to say I love having 3 instructors! Sara has new tips that help, and I'm getting corrected on tings that the others have not mentioned. Love fresh perspectives!
I feel like "the slow one" lol! Last nigh? I was having an Off Class (you know, everyone has 'em) and it was time for chaine turns? :D The music was great, and I took off, enjoying my chaine, and GOT APPLAUSE!!!!! :D I'm sure you know applause in class is reserved for those really amazing performances, at least they are here- I was so happy!!!!! To have my fellow classmates applaud me was a feeling of elation. :)
I used to hate getting corrections but now I love it because it means they are watching you and wanting you to get better and they think you will take there corrections and over all it helps me improve my dancing
Kathryn you are the biggest inspiration to me!! I am 13 and I am working very hard to become a professional! I recently got accepted to ABT summer intensive and I am so excited. Your videos help me so much
Thank you so much for this video Kathryn. I started as a begginer at the age of 23. I was insecure because I felt I was too old..most dancers start when they are younger. But after a year later, I've been trying so hard to improve. But there are new beginners in my class of 10-15 people.. and my Russian teacher always only corrects me. I was wondering if this was because the other's were better and needed no corrections. But now, maybe she thinks I have potential. Idk, it's hard to tell. But I continue to keep my head up, and work hard! Thank you!
Teachers can be against you. I had a teacher against me because she was jealous. Here is a correction/critique for you: be more specific instead of saying: "teachers are not against you" say something like, "most teachers" "or some teachers" or even "good teachers" because truth be told, there are teachers who become jealous of their students and are against them from succeeding and in fact, try to keep them from becoming better dancers because the teacher wants to be the best. Keep in mind not all teachers have a students best interest at heart. I know some people here will understand what mean to say, but be more precise in your language and don't assume all teachers want the best for you.
I think she made that pretty clear, that she meant teacher who is not mean, but just want you to get better. Other ones cannot even be called teachers in my opinion
Kathryn you are such an inspiration to me. Your resilience and strength given everything you have been through is astonishing. As an adult who never had the chance to dance as a little girl I'm now living my dream as an adult dancer and its people like you with your inclusive and generous spirit that helps me to believe that I can do just about anything I want to. I know that I'm way way too old to be a professional and I also deal with chronic pain due to health issues but none of that stops me. Thank you for sharing the wisdom and everything with us all, young and older. Xxxx
This is great advice! Unfortunately I used to be one of those dancers who didn't take corrections well and made a lot of drama. I used to get so frustrated with myself but it looked like I was getting mad at the teachers... Sometimes I wish I could go back in time and have a better attitude! It took me a while to change that. Thank you Katie for always making such amazing videos. And I absolutely love your new hair!
Your advice is so amazing!!! I'm such a perfectionist and hard on myself so when I teacher corrects me I sometimes take it to heart. This video just made me realise that a correction is advice in how to improve my craft and its actually more positive than negative! Thank you!!! 💖💖💖
I love this way of thinking about it. Not just in ballet, but in general. I teach dance (just a small studio), but I am definitely going to share this with my older kiddos. I think seeing someone who has been there, and is super successful would definitely help them out!
YES! I LOVE corrections and actually left a studio because the instructor did not correct me! It took months to get my ribcage closed, when I got to a REAL studio... I loooove ballet dancing!!! CORRECTIONS ARE A MUST!!!!!
Such good advice! I've definitely had to learn to cope with criticism as an art student, presentations are very literally called critiques, lol. It took a while to accept that critiques aren't a personal attack on you, but a tool being handed to you to use.
Hi Katy, thank you for the video! I really needed it. I love getting corrections (although I try my best not to be affected by it), but my problem is that I can't seem to apply the correction immediately and I end up frustrating my teacher more (I think). I usually get it awhile later or maybe even next lesson, I just hope my slow application/response doesn't make my teachers give up on me because honestly that is my biggest fear. I really want to improve, but it really does take some time for me to realise what I am doing wrong. I did just start dance when I was 17 so I suppose that would contribute why I am slower at applying corrections, but it's really frustrating for me, knowing I'm doing it wrong but not sure how to actually change to fit what's right>
Thank you thank you thank you for this video! I really needed to hear this right now! I don't really get many corrections from most of my teachers but I have one in particular who I get many corrections from no matter how hard I try to impress her. I have the tendency to be overly sensitive at times and take things a bit to hard but on the outside try to seem unbothered by it. I've started to wonder if this teacher in particular just doesn't like me or thinks I'm not good enough. But after watching this video I've started to realize that she probably is just trying to help me improve because she knows I can do better. And the more I think about it she is harsh with everyone, not just me. You helped me realize that getting corrections means that your teachers believe you can improve, not that they single you out. I will remember "If a teacher gives you a lot of corrections that probably means they like you." This is really going to help me! Thank you for this!
Yes yes yes on the live stream class! I love all of your videos. Thank you so much for all of the helpful videos! And I always take corrections to heart, whether they are for me or I don't know if who they are for. That's such good advice. I love getting corrections. My shoulders creeping up went uncorrected for several years before it was brought to my attention and it's so hard to fix now! i do think it's getting better finally though. Love you! Also, the hair looks great!
WOW! Never thought of it like this before: correction = information. Opened up a whole new world to me. Live ballet classes: I can't wait! Great idea! 😀
I wish I'd had advice like this ten years ago when I was a student! It took years for me to learn to take corrections with enthusiasm rather than frustration; thank you for giving this wisdom to the next generation. Now that I'm doing more teaching than performing, I had a question that's somewhat related to your latest podcast...How do you maintain classroom discipline, especially with younger students who are taking ballet recreationally?
New haircut looks beautiful, Katie! These are great words of wisdom, as you point out, for dancers and everyone else too. As a teacher myself, it frustrates me to think of those teachers who only criticize and walk away. That's the main part of our job, to explain how to improve! If someone has a teacher like that, I say, keep looking until you find someone who's willing to be specific with corrections. Otherwise, what's the point in taking classes?
Once after summer intensives, I despised one teacher, she was watching me do pique turns, and pointing me out, and made me do 50,000,000 turns until she didn't care. She barely ever corrected me and other times, she screamed at me until I snapped. I went home crying a few times , saying I never wanted to see her again. But I learned that she was a big professional, and so she was used to everything being perfect. And she wanted us to be perfect too, and being with her, I learned more than I did with a lot of my regular teachers.
Lovely hair! Thank you for the video, sweetie. I am not a dancer in any shape or form, i just love ballet. But. I teach chemistry. And I have to deal/correct/criticise students whilst they are doing their practicals in the lab. Most of them take it well cos they are still learning skills/techniques etc as they would have to go and work or going into postgrads education afterwards. But some of them do get a bit down: "ohh, i will never be a good chemist, ohh, i am useless, ohh i get so many corrections etc". And we have to try to counteract that all the time. So i shall start telling them what you have actually said in the video, excellent technique to bring their confidence up a bit. Thank you, Kathryn. 🤗
Personally, I feel singled out if I don't get a critique or correction from a teacher because even though it "conveys" that you are fine, something feels missing....
Thanks for that video! I really needed that because I always get so nervous and self-conscious when I get corrections :) Btw, your new hairstyle is amazing!
YESYESYES Please do stream ballet classes! I'm a begginer so I need all the advice I can take, specially starting from the basics. I'm only free to watch livestreams on the weekends due to college. Love your channel
Just do day I got a correction and I thought no that was perfectly fine then I thought well she’s my teacher she knows what’s she’s doing and talking about
i honestly feel sad when i don't get corrections,i love corrections. also i would be so happy if you did a live class!!! whenever i can get any class time in is great! especially if i don't have to leave home haha
Thanks for the tips! This is a long comment, but I'm looking for advice. I love corrections because as an advanced student at my studio who only started ballet about 2 1/2 years ago, I really want to improve quickly. My teacher was talking to me privately about corrections (after a competition) and she said that she stops correcting people after a while because if they haven't fixed something already, she thinks they never will. The use of the word 'people' several times in this conversation made me really insecure, but I didn't say anything of course and listened intently to what she had to say. I definitely felt myself growing pale the more she talked as she went on and on about "I don't have to teach people, why are they here if they won't fix it" and I was honestly starting to really feel like it was directed at me. Then she made a joke about making Monday nights (the rough class night that she's fed up with) a private with me instead and said she was happy I was going to a summer intensive where everyone would be as focused as me. I still feel very anxious and uncomfortable because she simply poured her internal moniloge out to me. Still unsure of whether she was trying to hint to me that I need to fix things more, or if she was just generally gossiping, but I just don't know how to react. Trying to be polite while also deciphering her vague hints.
I really love your new hair! :) also often when you get it shorter it can make it look fuller! :) I also really like your lip colour too! I have a new ballet skirt on it's way to me...but I broke my foot!! luckily it's a really simple and small break so the consultant says that when I'm ready I can start dancing in may!
Your hair is so lovely and I am really looking forward to the ballet class livestream!! 😄 Most of the teachers I've had so far just give corrections in a good way, but some teachers don't say anything and that can be a little frustrating sometimes. Thanks for your tips through this video! Greetings from the Netherlands /\ shanice
could you please make a "tips for pas de deux" video, especially for those who are first timers (like me). dealing with "rude" partners, tips on lifts and turns, and the like. your videos are very very helpful!! love your hair btw 😊
awesome video I will share with my students and parents of my students! I feel most of the time in the setting I teach in the parents don't handle it as maturely as the student.
Hello Katie, it would be really nice if you could do a video on the improvment. I am struggling on myself every day and I feel bad in the lessons because I see my friends doing the things better every day, improving, dancing better. I am really trying to work on the corrections but I steel dont see any improvment. I know that the teacher wants to help me but more the time goes and more I think she / he loses his hope that I can get better. I am for example really trying to do fast tendus or to jump higher and I have every day the same corrections, even if I think very much about them... that for several months and I steel dont see the difference. ..
Super helpful video as always! I'd love for you to do a free live class; I think it would be great for younger viewers who don't have any money of their own and their parents don't want to pay. I love you
I get very stressed when I get the same correction multiple times, but I always make the same mistakes. The reason is probably that I'm already 23, doing ballet only as a hobby and struggling to avoid those mistakes, I just hope my teacher doesn't think I being ignorant :( Looking foward to the live class :)
Thank you so much for this (and all of your other ones!) video. It will help me immensely in my training! Also, I love your hair - it really suits you! X
love the new haircut it suits you really well! Q & A : I'm planning on applying for SAB summer course next year but beacause of various reasons I don't think I will be able to attend the live audition so I thought of sending a video audition. do they take video auditions as seriously as they. do with live ones? love your channel and thanks for all the advise!!❤❤❤
Here my little question scenario going on: I'm constantly afraid of trying new things at dance. My anxiety kicks in and either tells me that I'll kill myself (or at least get seriously hurt) or that I'll embarrass myself. Also calls for the things that I am simply not good at: I don't want to practice them wrong, but I'm too scared to in normal class, because I always feel like my teacher and peers are judging me. In short, what advice do you have? I would *extremely* appreciate the help. Also, I would love the livestream, just not during normal school hours in the Eastern US timezone, if possible. Also also, your new hair looks great on you! Anyhow, I'm done rambling. Bye!
Loved this video !! I really needed it ! First, let me start by saying that your hair looks amazing !! Loved it! Second of all, I am taking ballet classes with a very old school teacher and sometimes I feel that she's just giving me corrections even though I see other girls not doing it right, which doesn't mean I am and they aren't. But, you know sometimes it gets you and you feel quite frustrated. I promise I'll start thinking like you suggested in this video and see what happens !! Thank you so much for them, I'm huge fan !! (: xoxoxo
I had a teacher who corrected like 10 things at once and I managed to fix only 1 or 2 things instantly. But then she told me I was not trying and I was not listening. But I was trying SO HARD. The result was that I wasn't even able to move anymore because I was totally blocked.
The hair looks beautiful! Pleas do the live stream it would be amazing for all us dancers!!! You could also do one of Facebook if you wanted. Side note, you give me so much confidence and every time I'm in class you pop into my head and I remember all the tips that you talk about to improve and my teacher has said that there is something different about my dancing thank you! ^.^
can you do a general video geared towards starting ballet as an adult? I've always wanted to start but I'm totally overwhelmed with where to start, finding a studio, appropriate attire/dress code, what to expect in a class, etc?? I'm super curious to hear your thoughts.
Thanks for another helpful video!!!! Could you please do a ballet barre specifically for ankle weights? I just got them and I don't know what exercises would be helpful. I would really appreciate it!!!!
Teachers usually only correct things they think you are actually able to to better. I observed that the better you are the more corrections you get. The "bad" students get fewer corrections because teachers like to invest attention only where it pays off.
If any viewers are not convinced that corrections = attention = your teacher thinks you have potential: When you get to the serious levels of training, everyone is clamoring for attention and corrections. It's a badge of pride and shows who's moving forward to see who is getting the most help. It is a rare and obvious occasion when a dancer is being pushed out of a school or opportunity via excessive corrections by a rare 'mean teacher'. Most teachers will ignore dancers they don't think aren't ready for more progressing information until those dancers either bring themselves up by listening to corrections given to others in class, or self-select out of the opportunity.
i'm not a dancer, but i used to play sports, and had a hard time with certain "corrections" from my coach. I think it is because muscle memory is so strong. I don't understand how dancers overcome muscle memory to correct things
Hey Katie! 😊 Could you upload the live stream here on youtube afterwards? Please! I'm from Austria so catching it live is probably going to be a bit hard for me, so it would be so great to be able to watch it later! Also: Thanks for all of your great videos! They are amazing! I have been doing your workout videos for a couple of weeks now and I love them! And your hair looks really nice in that cut too! Love from Vienna ❤
First of all: i love your videos, personality and dance. You're one of the people that inspired me to start dancing. Second: in my case, (being an adult that dances with 12 year olds), I deal with the opposite of corrections or critisism... i barely get any corrections at all and mostly when i'm dancing alone. I try to get as much information as possible, but sometimes i feel like my teacher doesn't care about me, any tips on how i can deal with that? Aaaand third: to the live stream class... yes, please yes! Can it be a friday? please? it's the only day i have off pleaseeeeeeee
I love your channel so much, could you please do a video on pointe strengthening for people who just got pointe shoes because I've been trying do get better in my pointe shoes but it's quite hard because I don't have a lot of strength in my feet wearing the shoes ❤️❤️
Hi Kathryn, I really love your videos! I also recently downloaded the app. It really motivates me to keep improving, so thank you for that! I was also wondering what a good exercise is to improve your endurance, since it seems like running isn't the perfect workout for a dancer... I thought about swimming, but I don't really have that opportunity right now...
I'm definitely one of those dancers that love getting corrections because in my mind it means the teacher is paying attention to ME! And it means my dancing will only get better and better. 😋
YES exactly - it means they are seeing you, not ignoring you! :)
LA Fresh Life I'm the same way! My main teacher (I have multiple ballet teachers) always corrects me but she also always reminds that she's doing it to make me a better dancer!

I love your new hair so much! It's really flattering on you, love you Katie
Thank you!
How do dancers handle being sick like having the flu and how do you handle a partner who isn't compatible with you?
Moondustangel 889 YES THIS IS IMPORTANT DO THIS ONE...
... please...
Moondustangel 889 you honestly just suffer
A live stream ballet class would be amazing!
The live free class sounds wonderful!!! I can't wait!

Thanks you for making this video!
It really help me to understand how to take corrections in a good way 😊
Being corrected is my favorite part of class!
Thanks for that video! I really needed that because I always get so nervous and self-conscious when I get corrections :) Btw, your new hairstyle is amazing!
I just received some major corrections from my teachers and I was feeling miserable. Thank you for this video because it helped me so much!
Kathryn, thank you so much for sharing all your knowledge and experiences. I get so much from your content. Please keep them coming
You inspire me so much! Kisses and hugs from England! ❤️😘🇬🇧
Thank you. Just the idea of a live ballet class with you made my day :) and your new hair looks really lovely. Thank you for the great advise

corrections are a gift from the teacher / RD / Ballet master!
Just do day I got a correction and I thought no that was perfectly fine then I thought well she’s my teacher she knows what’s she’s doing and talking about

I still feel very anxious and uncomfortable because she simply poured her internal moniloge out to me. Still unsure of whether she was trying to hint to me that I need to fix things more, or if she was just generally gossiping, but I just don't know how to react. Trying to be polite while also deciphering her vague hints.
Love you kathy ,, btw a live ballet class sounds amazing definitely will be tuning in
Definitely interested in a live stream class! You're hair looks perfect for spring/summer!
Thank you so much for this video! I was wondering if you could do a video on favoritism in the class setting? ❤
This is exactly what I need it! Thank you Katie 💖💖 PS: that haircut looks beautiful on you!
Thanks Cami!
could you please make a "tips for pas de deux" video, especially for those who are first timers (like me). dealing with "rude" partners, tips on lifts and turns, and the like. your videos are very very helpful!! love your hair btw 😊
awesome video I will share with my students and parents of my students! I feel most of the time in the setting I teach in the parents don't handle it as maturely as the student.
I just have cut my hair too...it's so much fresher now and I like it very much. And so does yours look. It really fits you.
Hey Katie, I love your videos so much they are really helpful and so real, you're amazing ❤!
I love corrections! If I don't get any corrections in a class I think the teachers don't like me and think they don't want to help me.
Hi Katie, please make a video about bruised toenails/toenails falling off and how to deal with them while still dancing!
Yes!! I love the new hairstyle!!!! And OMG! I'D LOVE a live class! YES YES YES!
Beautiful haircut, really suits you and great video! Helped a lot! Thank you! :)
I love you
I love your new haircut. Also, thanks so much, this is really helpful.
I get very stressed when I get the same correction multiple times, but I always make the same mistakes. The reason is probably that I'm already 23, doing ballet only as a hobby and struggling to avoid those mistakes, I just hope my teacher doesn't think I being ignorant :(
Looking foward to the live class :)
Great advice..and your hair looks terrific!
Here my little question scenario going on:
I'm constantly afraid of trying new things at dance. Bye!
You are such an inspiring person. Thank you so much ❤️
Love the new hair! Great video, thank you so much❤️
Thank you!
Yes please to a live stream class that would be so awesome :) Thankyou for such an informative channel you have helped me so much THANKYOU !!!
xoxoxo
I had a teacher who corrected like 10 things at once and I managed to fix only 1 or 2 things instantly. But then she told me I was not trying and I was not listening. But I was trying SO HARD. The result was that I wasn't even able to move anymore because I was totally blocked.
I loveeeeeeeee getting corrections because I really badly want to improve and achieve my dreams!
I would LOVE a livestream ballet class!! 😄💕
Yes live stream class please!! Love the new hair.
Yes! Yes! Yes! to the live stream ballet class! Will you alert us to that through this channel or one of your other channels? (CUTE hair!!).
Hi! I was wondering if you could do a ballet warm up/ skirt collection?
Love your dancing and personality:)
can you do a general video geared towards starting ballet as an adult?
I am looking forward for the live stream ballet class :)
That hair cut is just so cute you totally pull it off great!😍
Thank you so much!
Could you do a review on your stretch elastic? I was thinking of getting some. Love your videos!!
Live stream ballet class is a wonderful idea!
i'm not a dancer, but i used to play sports, and had a hard time with certain "corrections" from my coach. I think it is because muscle memory is so strong. I don't understand how dancers overcome muscle memory to correct things
I love your hair! Great video as always
Katie I love you and your hair so much and I hope you know that. much love 💜
Loveee your hair , looks much thicker
First of all: i love your videos, personality and dance. You're one of the people that inspired me to start dancing.
Second: in my case, (being an adult that dances with 12 year olds), I deal with the opposite of corrections or critisism... i barely get any corrections at all and mostly when i'm dancing alone. I try to get as much information as possible, but sometimes i feel like my teacher doesn't care about me, any tips on how i can deal with that?
Aaaand third: to the live stream class... yes, please yes! Can it be a friday? please? it's the only day i have off pleaseeeeeeee
Your hair is so beautiful either way but I love it short!❤️
Thank you!
Great video! Could you do a video on being neglected or not getting corrections from a teacher?
Love you hair and would Love the live stream class!!! :D
I love your channel so much, could you please do a video on pointe strengthening for people who just got pointe shoes because I've been trying do get better in my pointe shoes but it's quite hard because I don't have a lot of strength in my feet wearing the shoes ❤️❤️
Can you give some tips on how to improve step up turns ending in a développé écarté? Thanks for all you videos!
