The pirate costume worn by Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean was pretty epic
It was!
Love this! Menswear is an often overlooked category imo and this is a great showcase! 🙌🏻
Thanks April!
David Bowie's costumes as Jareth, the Goblin's king in "Labirynth" were fabulous and so "him", if you can understand me. And, oh! the armors in "Excalibur", so purposefully out of the time of the story! But also Merlin's costume in the same movie, almost Sci-Fi, more than fantasy. And, like some others said, Eastwood's poncho in Leone's movies and Neo's coat in "The Matrix". Or Ben Hur's iconic leather tunic during the chariots race. And ALL men's costumes of "The Princess Bride".
All awesome costumes Claudia! Thanks for sharing.
Marvelous as always. My picks are: Clint Eastwood’s poncho as the Man with No Name, Keanu Reeve’s Matrix coat, and George Clooney in Ocean’s 11. Or anybody’s suit in Ocean’s 11, the costume designer made Carl Reiner look sexy.❤️
Hi Leslie, I had Clint Eastwood and The Matrix initially, but the video was already so long! I might do a follow up. :)
Costner's and Connery's costumes from The Untouchables were awesome too! I think the designer was Armani. First Knight costumes were excellent too -- royal blue velvets with yellow gold piping, armor, etc. Stage sets were also coordinated with that royal blue to make a cohesive visual whole. A Room with a View had spectacular 1890's white summer cotton gowns, interesting traveling costumes, linen coats, etc. Those costumes beautifully expressed its era and the countries in which action takes place like Florence, Italy and back home in England.
Virginia Soskin Yes, you said it perfectly! Love Costner’s outdoor wear In The Untouchables! And the blue velvet in First Knight; exquisite!
I think this men's costume video more than the women's costume videos really helps understand the sheer amount of work that goes into distressing costumes for film. That would be an interesting video topic for geeks like me.
Same reason why a lot of history re-enactors just don't look like they've hopped off the pages of history books: Their clothes look brand new, when most people outside the very small ruling class could only afford a completely new outfit every several years, and a lot of people in the past plain out bought theirs secondhand and altered them to their needs to save a big penny. (I made my Victorian walking dress for an RPG convention from my grandmother's old velvet curtains. In retrospect, butchering antiques like that was a bit harrowing, but I was like 16 and had no judgment back then. Wish I could have my old metabolism back, though, the waistline of that dress was a scant 19" without a corset. These days, my waist is 34" on a good day. lol)
Soldiers or any military were given new uniforms. They didn’t wear their own clothes in most cases. If the country that was powerful at all wouldn’t have an army with ratty uniforms. Re enactors from the revolution or Middle Ages wear well used costumes
Brando wore the white T-shirt as outerwear way sooner than James Dean. Dean may be more iconic, but Brando should still get a shout out for donning the white tee in Streetcar named Desire and starting the craze.
Thanks for commenting Eerie. You're probably right.
@@Costume_CO But a great video nonetheless, your chanel is a blessing:)
I would love to see a follow up video about more men's fashion in the future. There are so many great costumes of male characters nobody ever talks about. Two that came to my mind while watching this video: Jean Reno as Léon and Raúl Juliá as Gomez Addams.
I always thought Indiana Jones merged Bogart’s fedora with Brando’s leather jacket look to give Ford a serious/rebellious look that perfectly fit the professor/adventurous archeologist’s personality to a T.
So wonderfully researched and highly interesting! It's not often I watch a UA-cam video as long as this but it was worth every second!
Thanks so much Renza!
My pick: Marty McFly "future" outfit in Back to the Future II.
I just watched Back to the Furure last night!
@@Costume_CO Hope you see the second, to evaluate the 2015 fashion, according to 1985 people 😆
Yeah, I think we will do that this coming week. Thank you for the suggestion. 😊
YAY!!!!!! You’re back! This was an amazing video. Well done!
Thanks Cindy! Yes, I have been terribly behind but I have a bunch of videos in the pipe coming soon. 😁
The ‘break’ in Bogart’s pants in Casablanca was perfect
Yes. The tailoring was amazing back then.
How could you have left out Cary Grant and his impeccable tailoring in North by Northwest?
I said the same thing, LOL- plus they left out Sean Connery!
Just love that your photo of Sir Lancelot comes from Monty Python!
Yes, I'm a big fan!
But the still actually featured King Arthur. John Cleese played Lancelot.
I'm subbed!! Already was. I can't wait to watch Rocky Horror with Naomi!! She loves that Movie 😍 I went to a screening once. I didn't know all the sayings, or songs, or that there would be projectile hot dogs and toast 😂😂We look for one every year, but it's gotten too expensive ❤️❤️❤️ Finally cooled off in Alabama 🍂Instead of over °100, it's in the °70's. I had to break out long sleeve shirt!! Have fantastic weekend 🌞❣️💜✌️
This is so entertaining! Both this, and the Women's Costumes, are the coolest things I've watched on youtube for a long time! I stumbled onto your channel, but am a new fan. Thanks.
What a lovely comment. :) I really appreciate that Cheryl.
I was personally impacted by Saturday Night Fever. At the time my friend, Roy Madrid, had taught Travolta the Hustle for the movie. When a SoCal paper published a story about my friend overnight he was bombarded by all the media. We were living together & teaching disco in nightclubs & auditoriums. When Roy was offered a wardrobe of gaberdine instead of polyester the fashionistas picked up on it and all the disco regulars started buying gab pants. For a short time we lived a charmed existance.
Hi Carole, thank you SO MUCH for sharing your story! Years ago, I worked with director John Badham and I was dying to hear some of his stories but sadly he never shared any while I was on set with him.
Loved, Loved This...especially Humphrey Bogart's costume in Casablanca.❤🧡
Thank you so much Molly for the lovely comment. 😊
Yes, O'Toole looked marvellous in his white costume. I loved Han Solo's costume, too. Eastwood's poncho, Keanu Reeves's in Matrix.
The weirdest thing about Braveheart is that the princess' outfits are some the most historically accurate medieval outfits ever, with her veils, hairstyle and coif. So I wonder if the trolling theory is actually true and they tried to spare the poor princess of it.
I agree that the silhouette is accurate but the fabrics are very contemporary. I do love all of her costumes though.
@@Costume_CO OMG I wasn't expecting you were going to answer! Your channel is a gem and I love all your videos, they are so rich and educative. Also, I agree! The velvets in special look very 90s, but I like her costumes a lot too :D
Ah, thank you so much Dani. That's very kind of you to say that. 😁
Love the video
My favorites are Harrison Ford and James Dean's red Jacket
If I could add a recent one maybe the Heath Ledger Jocker purple suit. Fantastic. (And actually the new Jocker red suit has lots of potential as well)
Newt scamander costume with the blue coat. I know those are not so Iconic, but I like them a lot
Hey thanks Vanessa! I'm probably going to do a separate super hero/villain video.
@@Costume_CO Yees!
Great video! 💕 Thanks for including Rocky Horror 👄 and Austin Powers! ☮ Keep up the great work! 🥰
Thanks Golf Princess! It's great to see you here. :)
Some of My favorite mens costumes that aren't already on the list are newt scamander's costume with the blue coat from fantastic beasts and Where to Find Them, prince kit's green hunting uniform from Cinderella (2015), anything Gene Kelly wears as Don lockwood in singing in the rain, the tin man, scarecrow, and the lion from wizard of oz, Darth Vader from star wars, Professor Harold Hill's salesman costume from the beginning of Music man, and Edward scissorhands from the movie of the same name
All great costumes D. Grady! I had some of these costumes on my shortlist, but I will likely do a follow up. Thanks for you comment. 😁
Not to mention Ming the Merciless in Flash Gordon
Humphrey Bogart was always so well-dressed :-)
Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting. 😁
Last time I was this early, we were still reviewing GoT season 8. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I am loving all this! I've waited 84 years for this video! 😂😂😂😂😂
I have other ideas along these lines of videos:
- Top 10 Edith Head costumes: Sunset Boulevard HAS to be included
- Top 10 Music video costumes (men and women): Michael Jackson in Thriller, Madonna in Vogue, Beyonce in Single Ladies, The Beatles in Sgt. Peppers, these videos just write themselves!
P.s. What happened to your intro?
Hi sweetie, I miss you! How is NY?
Hello, darling! I'm doing as best as I can. Seen some theatre, cry at least twice a week, and do my best to deal with the erratic temperature change. You?
@@tatianamelendez490 Are you planning on staying through the summer? Son #1 wants to visit NY so we are planning a July visit there.
@@Costume_CO I'm probably gonna be in PR by July, but I do want to stay through June to see the gay pride parade.
@@Costume_CO I wanna come too!! You rock. Love these vids and love the idea of top Edith Head! ❤
I love love LOVE Chris Tucker as Ruby, but I'm such a big Prince fan, I'd have really appreciated seeing this lighter, more humerous side of the ever so serious Purple Prince.
Yes, it would have been so much fun!
Rocky's red, white and blue trunks. It Happened One Night's lack of undershirt KILLED undershirts.
Thanks for sharing Constance.
Constance Miller
Thanks for adding that. I was about to mention that.
My pick is ALL the costumes in The Last of the Mohicans (1992).
8:42 It's interesting in the cut of the sample shown and the screenshot beside it, how different the style was then, and how it's come back around. For a men's shirt the underseam (in the armpit area) is cut really short compared to an "average" man's modern t shirt wherein that seam is much lower and the sleeve itself is at least three inches longer. An average men's shirt comes to my elbow and is horribly unflattering.
I prefer this cut ( I mean, look at James there, swooon!) But I think this came back in the form of the cap sleeve for women, generally. The only difference is the angle on which the outer fabric is cut.
I wish they still made them like this. Yes, both men and the shirts, lol.
Thanks for your comment, Natalie! I think it's also that there is a cuff on the sleeves, that gives it more of that cap sleeve look. But true, very different than modern undershirts.
@@Costume_CO Thank you for your response! There is another channel about fashion history that I like the content of, but every single video deliberately has the comments turned off. I find this very off putting and often just don't watch it, because I may have a question or comment and there is no contact with the creator. Thank you for not being that way! :)
@@natalie8212 That's a really odd thing to do. I love to engage with my viewers and I learn so much from them. In fact, 2 of my original viewers are now regular contributors to the channel!
@@Costume_CO That's very cool! Much respect, and thanks for putting so much time and research into your videos. The passion for your topic is always evident.
"INDIANA JONES"! .... Directly from 1954 'Secret of the Incas" [EDITH HEAD]. As worn by Charlton Heston.
Revenge for Sabrina.
Mens costumes in My Fair Lady? Or the incomparable, ever classy Cary Grant???
No Clark Gable, Cary Grant, or Sean Connery as Bond?
Nope.
First of all, thank you for this as I admit I'm even more ignorant of men's costuming than I am women's.
Oh, wow, I did not know that height trivia fact. Masculinity stereotypes/ideals embedded in that much?
One thing that we all take for granted unless it's something in our field is how /hard/ it is to actually make something look effortless/simple. And it's a really interesting thing about early B&W to color works-completely different techniques when it comes to needing particular contrasts but it's interesting that it transitioned so well. I wonder if they had to make any adjustments because of it when the switch was decided.
And this is what I get for writing comments as I listen as you mention the jeans dying. I would be lying if I said I didn't love those boots.
Your design sheet for 'Arabia makes me wonder if you have a top list of costume concept art.
Holy hannah if that isn't the definition of making a lot with a little with that kind of budget I don't know what is! I love stories like that.
Again I have NO idea if you'd have any interest in this but your Saturday Night Fever section makes me wonder if you'd compared film vs stage or remakes/adaptation changes?
Hold up. How do you even compare Indie and Atticus? Don't get me wrong, Mockingbird is one of my favorite classic novels, I love them both but...And now all I can picture is a pair of people sit-bouncing on a hat.
DRACULA. You've hit my soft spot. Favorite novel, favorite adaptation so far. I have seen that a dozen times and I /never/ caught the pheonix and dragon...clearly I haven't watching it since getting to know Aemy Blackfyre. Oh. SO many thoughts this has inspired. I was always transfixed by that wig.You have made my night.
How much conflict is caused by costumes that are so inaccurate but look so good?
I don't know how anyone could forget a leopard print style like that but apparently I did. Or I am in desperate need of a rewatch.
Confession I never watched Austin Powers but this is fascinating all the same.
Thank you once again for not only including the technical details but history and trivia to boot!
Can u PLEASE please please do some videos on the costumes of The Tudors???
Hi Jamie, I have had that on my list for ages. I will do my best. 😁
I would love some videos about the lotr costumes!🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡 it would be so good plus it's my favorite movies and the costumes made me want to work with fashion.
Not to mention they are so detailed and there are so many hidden details that you don't see unless you really pay attention like the elven capes being super thin and the hand embroidery on the elves
Yep, I agree that the Lotr costumes need to be celebrated. They are really really beautiful and I would love an analysis on them. Much love.
Hi Aki and Yolanda, I have been trying to work out a colab on this because it is so extensive and alot of research is involved. Want to do it justice. 😁
@@Costume_CO I mean depending on what type of collab you are looking for then I know a couple of people who has spend a lot of time to look into the costumes.
It would be lovely. Your videos are professional. Take all the time to do it justice.
Have you done one on Chicago? One of my favorite movies 😍. Never saw actual play😭 It's Kerri McDonald btw. I'm working on getting my channel better.
Hi Kerri!
How do you explain the uncanny connection between Austin Powers' costume and that of Shirley Partridge in the Partridge Family?
Oh, yes. Good point!
Well done I loved the video! 😁😂😂 Yeeeaahhh Baaabaayeee...😂
Thanks Zelda!!
In the 1800s they had type of trench coat. It was called a Duster. Long with the shoulders covered with an extra layer of material. It was a lot of the times made of Leather.
@xScooterAZx Thanks x, are you referring to the ones worn in westerns?
@@Costume_CO Yes. :}
Yes, makes sense that they would be the precursor. Thanks so much for commenting!
I am shocked that Ruby Roid apparently didn't take any inspiration from dr. Frank-n-Furter. They both so unique but have similar feel
It's possible, but Gauthier has always had his unique take on fashion. He's the same designer that created Madonna's cone bra design.
How does this not include Darth Vader?
Hi Rebecca, I had it on my short list, but I had to narrow it down to 10.
I prefer Anakin's dark Jedi outfit in Episode III
I once saw an lffoval song/ memorabilia book for the Rocky Horror show and movie. I believe vimpluked and annotated by O'Brian. On of the set of inside pages featuring pictures and original copies of related material this page was a reprint if the Adam and Eve carakouge from the late fiftir
Liked this video and the women’s costume video. Are there no minority costumes/iconic movies? IE Shaft, Superfly, Poetic Justice, as a representation of “street culture” and The Last Emperor or Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, as a representation of many styles of Asian culture through the years and as the west sees Asia.
I’m always surprised how short these mega famous movie men are. Seems ubiquitous.
How could they not have Jareth the Goblin King? Then again, he has like 11 outfits in that movie lol... but they could have chosen one...
I will add him to the next video. :)
@@Costume_CO yay! Thanks :)
WOW...Thanks for paying tribute to the men! You say costumes and most think of the women.
It's my pleasure! It's often times the men's costumes that I prefer.
Wonderful! Loved all your choices! Will you do the costumes for Dune?
TY Prof Cecily! Do you mean the David Lynch version or the upcoming remake.
Great list although I did cringe when the narrator said Hans Solo wrong. Hans is pronounced with the "a" pronounced "aah" not like an "a" in "hands", last time I looked. Although the rest is great as of course men's costumes never get enough attention
Will always say Han that way. Sorry.
Have you seen Akira Kurosawa's 'Kagemusha' and' Ran'?
No, but I plan on it, and the Seventh Samurai.
@@Costume_CO The feudal-Japanese costumes and armor in those movies are breathtaking....as are the movies altogether. Highly recommended.
Fascinating! Just a minor correction though. The Native American term Hopi is pronounced like the word ‘hope’ rather than the word ‘hop’.
Thank you. :)
She stated that the costume budget for Rocky Horror was $1600, then said that translated to $7500 in US currency. Did I miss something or did she mean to say the budget was 1600 English pounds?
I meant with inflation it's $7500 US dollars.
Fight Club movie costume is my favorite
Which costume?
I don’t care that the costumes in Braveheart are not completely true-to-time; they work for the movie.
Need a the women’s!! A have a party next week!
I did one, there's a link in the pinned comment. 😁
I don't disagree with adding Rocky Horror, but shouldn't David Bowie's amazing costume in Labyrinth also be considered?
Maybe in the next one.
Wt h are you doing? Your SEO is on steroids!!! movie costumes #3, epic costumes 4, mens costumes 3, casablanca costumes 3.... dang
Ah, thanks so much U Do It!! Using Morningfame.
Ok , wait... THAT makeup took 4 hours for Tim Curry?
You totally forgot Valentino's gaucho outfit or his toreador outfit (bought by Debbie Reynolds).
I realize that's not 1940s on, but still those early silent film outfits were incredibly ICONIC, and the toreador outfits he wore were very expensive to make. Valentino's Sheik outfits look rather comic-bookish, but after seeing your photo of T. E. Lawrence in his mis-matched print calico or paisley caftan and head scarf, the Sheik's outfits aren't that far off; he also wore a curved knife like O'Toole's. And NOBODY wore contemporary stylish clothes like Rudolph Valentino -- three piece fine wool suits with pinched in waists, travel wear, he popularized wrist watches rather than pocket watches, wore unusual shoes and hats, you NEVER saw him in casual clothes in his photos or while traveling in public unless he is in athletic clothes for boxing or fencing, or in his mechanic's coverall while working on his cars. He was a real fashion icon yet few people know that because his career was so short and he lived so long ago now. He always dressed to the nines, looked "good enough to eat." And women wanted to.
William Wallace wasn't a highlander. He was born just outside of Glasgow and was of Flemish/Breton descent. He would have worn armor or a mix of mail, leather and tunic and hose.
Are you making this statement to Mel Gibson because I don't think he's watching this video.
@@Costume_CO No, you mentioned highlanders a couple of times on referring to Mel Gibson in the movie. I thought you were unaware that Wallace was not a highlander.
Ah, I see. I don't think I actually got into any of that in this video. We do talk about it here: ua-cam.com/video/nXTNNqAyOQg/v-deo.html and here: ua-cam.com/video/_svV-_nNzms/v-deo.html
How could you NOT include CARY GRANT? You could easily include the suit he wore in "North by Northwest"! Also, why Austin Powers and NOT James Bond? Come on now, EVERYONE remembers Sean Connery in his tuxedo when he was first introduced in "Dr. No"!! To paraphrase Erich vonStroheim, the person who made this list had nothing on his mind but a hat!
I like it
FYI William Wallace wasn't a Highlander, he was from Elderslie just outside Glasgow, another reason the kilts are wrong.
The whole story is completely made up!
great stuff here saw you on tubebuddys stream
Hi Zala! Yes, it's nice to see you!
@@Costume_CO tried contacting you on facebook but got no reply i need you advice regarding youtube
Lol, mentioning Tim Curry & epic men's costumes, but leaving out his role as Darkness in Legend...Those horns had me so sexually confused as a child!
Ooh yes and that sparkly cape as if the devil wasnt sassy enough
The PLANET is called "Transexual Transylvania!"
I would never buckle the belt of my trench. It would be gauche.
Peter o'toole and to have her hair dyed blonde to play t.e Laurence and O'Reilly was 6 foot in height and Laurence was only 5 foot 5 inches in height.Laurence home that he lived in before he passed away is in Dorset called clouds hill, amazing place and very simple with furniture and such and sadly u can still drive on the road where he had his fatal accident
Gene Wilder's "Willy Wonka" costume
Clint Eastwood's hat and poncho from "The Good The Bad and The Ugly"
I had them on my original list, because I love both of those looks. But I had to get it down to 10. Maybe next time. :)
You say things about the movie Braveheart starting Mel Gibson besides the kilt that he wear wasn't the right century the other thing wasn't right there was no belts back then But you see Mel Gibson was wearing one in this movie
Belts and sword belts were worn in the 13th century, but with surcotes.
I miss your iconic introductory music theme!
Hi Constance! I love it too, but I was getting a big drop at the beginning so I decided to cut it. On shorter videos, I might keep it in, but this one is documentary length. 😁
Transylvania is not another planet, it is a region of Romania.
Frank's an alien transvestite from Transexual, Transylvania. I don't think that's in Romania.
Thank goodness Harrison was casted as indiana...
Here to see Tim Curry
I don't blame you!
I thought this was a how to do the costume sorry wrong place for me
No worries.
Nudelman...pronounced Noodle man...not the way you pronounced it.
It's Nadoolman. I'm saying it how the designer pronounces it.
I looked for MANY clips of her introducing herself and couldn't find one. She introduces herself on film by her MARRIED name, Landis. She's married to director, John Landis.
Let's have a moment of silence for all the animals sacrificed for Indy's wardrobe.
You shoulde included Brandon Lees Eric Draven.....a totally 90s and gothic classic. Maybe not upper crust enough for you.
What movie?
@@Costume_CO The Crow, and while its based on a graphic novel, is NOT a superhero movie. Its a tragic love story/revenge tale. The style of the movie is so of its time it may as well be cultural landmark. Brandon, RIP, made alot of the aesthetic choices himself. And he gave his life to see it through.
Sorry, yes, that is an iconic costume. I might consider it for a follow up. :)
