I'm Taiwanese living in Seattle. In the past 10 years or so, the only direct flight from Seattle to Taipei is run by EVA. This year we will see several airliners join EVA to fly this line, they are China Airlines (don't be mistaken, this is actually a Taiwanese airliner, used to be the flag carrier), Delta, and Starlux. So happy to see this development!
I am a frequent flyer to/from Taipei and also a Delta frequent flyer. I used to do regular connection flights through NRT. I am very sure they will pull this SEA-TPE route and this will be proven as not profitable for Delta. United is the bottom feeder price leader with EVA and Starlux taking the top end spots. China and Delta take up the mid-segment. All 5 will battle it out with pricing and the first one to fall will be Delta.
If I were you choose its partner China Airlines by the way I asked a hong konger about China Airlines versus Cathay Pacific it turns out they ended up putting CI A350-941 A321-271N over CX A350-941 & A321-251N. For the Taiwanese American community you see this often 國泰航空 vs 長榮航空 vs 中華航空. The first two Airlines is the most common comparison

Great video Patrick! Delta One especially on the A330-900neo seems like a pretty great option for business class these days, especially to Asia. However, it is worth pointing out that their Airbus A350 has a better product and slightly larger cabin and seat in Delta One as the A350 is wider than the A330. I am glad to see they have added the A350 service from Seattle to Taipei and I hope that they have the best of luck! I hope to try this route someday! Cheers 🥂 my friend to Delta One & a great video! -Caleb’s Aviation
With all the geopolitical stuff going on, I really recommend everyone who cares about the issue to visit Taiwan. It's a great place to be, and you support their economy.
That's a hard recommendation to make. I travel to Taiwan regularly for my job and my family is very very uneasy about it, especially between now and the next US election. Taiwanese are strong and resilient, but Taiwan suffers from multiple threats and issues... You've got guaranteed earthquakes and typhoons on a regular basis, on top of the geopolitical tensions. I think I only missed 2 typhoons but caught all other recent disasters during my visits, and one never get used to them. On an average good day, most of the Taiwan is super hot and humid, so it's only nice during the winter for people that come from milder weather - 70deg F is considered freezing cold by most Taiwanese. That said, if you do visit and do get deep into the society, you will find a rude awakening that not all Taiwanese are against unification with China and that number is quite large.
@_w_w_ that is because you are going there for your job. Realistically, a tourist would choose a non-typhoon season for better weather and easier sight-seeing. The geopolitical risk is completely overblown. It exists, but there is always risk no matter where you go. Earthquakes are more concerning, but people go to Japan all the time...
@@RandomStuff-zw7uh That's a cop-out and uninformed response. If you try to not visit during those "risky seasons" then when do you go? What time of the year that's left and considered OK/safe/productive enough to go? Taiwan has exposures to earthquakes, floods, landslides, debris flows, and land subsidence year round.... Using Japan as comparison shows your lack of knowledge in this area. Japan also has its risk to natural disasters of which earthquake is the main one. It has a lot less other risk factors than Taiwan. In addition, Japan actually has 4 seasons so you get to see Japan 4 different ways, whereas Taiwan just one season - hot and humid, minus the 3 or 4 weeks of the year during which you actually won't sweat when you are out walking or playing tourist. Just this last April, I happened to be there during the 7.4 quake. Several young ladies were visiting from Korea and staying at the same hotel I was. They were so distraught, I felt so bad that I had to stay with them to calm them down. I mentioned to them earthquake is common in Taiwan and everything will be OK. They were shocked Taiwan has earthquakes and vow never to visit again... Taiwan is a beautiful place but the amount of natural disaster, compounded with recent elevated geopolitical tensions means it's a place to avoid if you want to spend your vacation money wisely.
I'm amazed at how much quieter the -900's engines are than the -200/300's. Delta is my preferred US airline. I flew them often when I lived in South Carolina and was at uni in Virginia, and I now think their hard and soft product in all classes is superior to BA's so I prefer to fly them on my trips back to the US.

Back in the 90s, Delta established a new Pacific hub in Portland, Oregon. They had purchased a fleet of new MD-11s for long-range Pacific flights. During that time, Delta flew non-stop to Tokyo, Nagoya, Seoul, and Taipei from Portland, as well as Hong Kong from LAX. Bangkok was either one-stop or two-stop service. Connecting non-stop MD-11, L1011 and 767 flights connected their major US hubs with their Pacific network via Portland. All flights offered First Class, Business Class and Economy. This was all before the Northwest merger and Delta struggled to compete with United, Northwest and the Asian carriers even after all of this effort.

True! I remember those days of PDX as transpacific network. Anyways, friends in Atlanta is telling me they are already discussing about potentially cancelling this SEA-TPE route, which isn't surprising. Delta can compete with United but not with EVA, China and especially Starlux. If Delta is smart, terminate codeshare with CI and starve them of domestic connections out of SEA and it will probably push CI out of this city. Starlux will stay because of AS agreement. SEA does not need that many flights to TPE - this is not sustainable.
Cool north bound take off with Mt Rainier in the background there. Can confirm the baggage area is still pretty chaotic with construction after flying in from Albuquerque several weeks ago.
Another fun inaugural flight of DL. I’d love to try their A330-900Neo one day. On the other hand, running out of choices for both meals was not a very good first impression

15:53, That's the case for me when I flew KLM, Boeing 787-9 from Kuala Lumpur to Manila on their 5th freedom flight for the 1st time, this time after takeoff, the crew announced that the wifi is not working, which is interesting and bummer, considering it's a 3 and a half hour flight, my flight is good and okay. Good to see delta back I was on Deltas MD11 service from Portland to Seoul and onwards to Taipei in 1991 From Taipei to Seoul and Portland on 802 and back on 801 aircraft tail numbers
How do you find Inaugural Flights? Do you just Google them? I've never been on an Inaugural Flight. Hopefully one day I'll get to experience one. The water canon salute is a cool way to be sent off and also arrive. It seems like Sam Chiu is on most Inaugural Flights being the avgeek that he is.
I always sit near the front so I get my first meal choice. It’s a shame that you didn’t get what you wanted. I would like to have seen your choices. Does Delta not let you preorder your meals? I’ve gotten spoiled on United with that service.
Northwest probably flew to Taipei via Tokyo at the time of the merger. Delta flew from Portland to Taipei via Seoul according to a 1991 route map. Is the celebration that it is now from Seattle?
I’ve been to AA Flagship Lounge at LAX recently. While nice, but just more food choices; nothing special. I also took access to QANTAS One World Lounge. They sent me from the business lounge because of my emerald status. Old lounge, but very few people inside and huge for serving just a few people. Gourmet meal made to order. My daughter was impressed.
I don't think Delta will launch flights from Atlanta to Taipei because it's too far, it's a 16 to 17 hours, it's impossible to fly longer, even they send the Airbus A350-900, it's not enough fuel and moderate to strong turbulence in the Pacific Ocean.
14:15, Really? No way. But when I flew United from Honolulu to Seattle via San Francisco last March, my luggage is tag all the way to Seattle, so nothing happen on my flight.
Patrick if this flight gets delayed heavily Delta Airlines can simply reroute you on the East Asian Skyteam Alliance network KE🇰🇷 MU,FM,MF🇨🇳 CI🇹🇼 GA VN on Delta one equivalents. Therefore you will get a much better product from the East Asian Skyteam Alliance network. If they put you on to China Eastern you would find out it's seat is just a reskinned Delta A350 seats. The exception is that row 1 on MU is First Class seats. Therefore MU is 4F 36J 32W 216Y. Patrick China Airlines does fly to SFO directly making it very popular with the Taiwanese and the Filipinos in the Bay Area. Excellent trip
I think you'll love China Airlines. I love both their hard and soft product, and I've flown them extremely frequently. Their business class is just awesome
Pre order is a great idea airlines use, but still shouldn’t be running out of options by the half way point back the first aisle. Just poor planning. Something that I’ve never had happen on Asian carriers, only North America and European carriers
@@PatrickSheaAviation I just got back from Thailand (EVA) there were several options that were listed as pre-order only. They were the best options on the menu. So that is another reason as well. Pre-ordering can improve your options
Did anyone notice the DL crew weren’t supposed to serve the meal on one tray for their main service on this route? That’s not normal this crew took a shortcut
Correct. The main Delta One meal service prior to 9 or 10pm scheduled departure is supposed to be served course by course; I can understand if the flight is delayed and if it's a short one like JFK-LHR, but there is simply no excuse here on a 12 hour flight! This crew I guess wanted an extended rest break!
Delta seems to have made some unfortunate decisions for such a special flight. United, for example, pulls out all the stops for inaugurals. Fixing squawks, reviewing meal plans, etc
great vid patrick, but btw, it's not really Delta's first flight to Taipei. Taipei was actually a minor hub for delta for quite some time, and it even saw services to Tokyo!
When flying DeltaOne internationally, I always get an email which allows me to preorder my inflight meal. You should have received the email where you can choose which meal you would like during your flight. That's too bad they ran out of Chinese menu items when it was your turn to choose your meal. I like to preorder the menu item of the country that I'm traveling to. This is why I appreciate getting that email from Delta. It's the perfect way to get into vacation mode.
The normal service isn’t to serve it all on one tray, it’s supposed to come in courses. The crew was probably briefed by the captain that they are anticipating turbulence at the time they are supposed to start service, so rather than delaying the service the crew probably made the decision to serve it all at once for safety reasons. Weather the turbulence happened that way or not, the crew will always make safety the priority and listen to the captain’s instruction.
If you were in seat 6A I don’t understand how the flight was out of the Chinese meal. They must not have had any to begin with. Definitely not a good start for the airline.
DL needs better connections to the east coast for its return flight from TPE. My choices? Either 8-hours of layover or an extra stop. UA has way better connections, but the thought of flying on UA over 2 hour… 🤮
I think at the very least, inaugural flights should have all meals (especially the meals that represent the new destination they're flying to) well stocked! AND, if you didn't get to choose your first choice during the first meal service, you should get first choice during the next meal service. Sorry you didn't get to choose the Chinese option either times, i'd be super disappointed.. Great flight report! Keep it up!
Please please, if you insist on background sounds, do the subtitles in the video so that one can turn off the sound. That constant ringing is horrible.
Excellent review packed with interesting information. However, no wi-fi, running out of food TWICE is inexcusable. BTW I searching eBay for that passport cover.
Thanks! Definitely sucks about the WiFi and meals. One thing that I’ve had some United crews do recently is do the second meal from back to front so that the people in the back (who paid the same amount) don’t get screwed twice
Recording voiceovers might be the biggest challenge yet… won’t be in a hotel for a few days for silence, so we get to vibe with some background ambient noise

this is quick! that plane just flew back to SEA and this inaugural is uploaded. did you do editing/voice over in a Taipei 7-11? i keep hearing ding-dong in the background 😊
Ha! It was just in the quietest corner of the airport I could find
Good to see delta back
I was on Deltas MD11 service from Portland to Seoul and onwards to Taipei in 1991
From Taipei to Seoul and Portland on 802 and back on 801 aircraft tail numbers
How do you find Inaugural Flights? Do you just Google them? I've never been on an Inaugural Flight. Hopefully one day I'll get to experience one. The water canon salute is a cool way to be sent off and also arrive. It seems like Sam Chiu is on most Inaugural Flights being the avgeek that he is.
Just gotta stay up to date with the aviation news and you’ll see it. Simple Flying and Wikipedia are some of my main sources
I always sit near the front so I get my first meal choice. It’s a shame that you didn’t get what you wanted. I would like to have seen your choices. Does Delta not let you preorder your meals? I’ve gotten spoiled on United with that service.
They did offer a pre-order and some people did do that. I was unfortunately too busy and it slipped my mind to do that ahead of time
Amazing video!
quick side note that the flight duration in the description is not filled
I love the film, love Patrick too.
Northwest probably flew to Taipei via Tokyo at the time of the merger. Delta flew from Portland to Taipei via Seoul according to a 1991 route map. Is the celebration that it is now from Seattle?
It’s the first time they’ve ever flown to Taipei directly
@@PatrickSheaAviationExcept it isn’t because today’s “Delta” is also made from the carrier that hired Joan Crandall, Northwest.
Your voiceovers sound great! COOL flight!
Thanks for posting I am taking this flight later this year
Well done video, Patrick!
I agreed with you that Asian carriers are better than any carriers in the US.
Great video,
That passport case is badass
Cheers
Thanks! Totally! I love it!
I flew Delta from TPE to NRT to SFO in Jul., 2011. 767.
i live in seattle and heard about this flight, was so happy even though i will never fly it
That is one beautiful take off. Wonderful. Did the service compare to Asian airlines? I doesn't appear to compare.
Nothing compared to Asian carriers. They are really in their own league
You coming to the D1 lounge opening at JFK on the 25th? Just got my rsvp, hope you got one as well
I wish! I’m working that day. I plan to visit on the first week of July
Ahhh too bad, would have loved to say hey! Keep up the good work, these videos are awesome
I am waiting for Delta to start a service between ATL and TPE.
That would be interesting. I wonder what the market for that is however
I don't think Delta will launch flights from Atlanta to Taipei because it's too far, it's a 16 to 17 hours, it's impossible to fly longer, even they send the Airbus A350-900, it's not enough fuel and moderate to strong turbulence in the Pacific Ocean.
14:15, Really? No way. But when I flew United from Honolulu to Seattle via San Francisco last March, my luggage is tag all the way to Seattle, so nothing happen on my flight.
❤❤ Delta is fast! ^_^ Taiwan and States line will be a very busy line in the following 10 years!❤❤
Another great, informative video. Great job
Thanks!
i'll tale this flight next month, thanks for sharing!!
Awesome! Enjoy!
Excellent trip
nice review but why they served everything on one tray Delta does separate courses did you ask why?
I have no clue. Guess the crew got sloppy. Not a good look though for an inaugural
I think you'll love China Airlines. I love both their hard and soft product, and I've flown them extremely frequently. Their business class is just awesome
It was an awesome flight. Working on that video now!
Always pre-order your food on international flights. That way they don’t run out of what you want
The food looks subpar, for business class. I would fly Starlux.
great vid patrick, but btw, it's not really Delta's first flight to Taipei. Taipei was actually a minor hub for delta for quite some time, and it even saw services to Tokyo!
They have been there before, but not nonstop at least
I mean yea that is a possibility. Just sucks when you have a reduction in normal services
Yeah I get it. The crew of will just always choose safety over service.
If you were in seat 6A I don’t understand how the flight was out of the Chinese meal. They must not have had any to begin with. Definitely not a good start for the airline.
I guess there was a lot of pre-orders and Delta decided not to load any extras… strange for sure
Another great vlog but can’t believe you didn’t want a picture with the Seahawk Mascot……
Ha! My niners would never forgive me
Was that a long hair on the bedding 😮😮😮
You haven’t lived until you’ve flown Delta One JFK/SFO on the 757-200 with its 2-2 configuration, it’s the best! (Insert sarcasm here)
Ha! Still haven’t done that one
DL needs better connections to the east coast for its return flight from TPE. My choices? Either 8-hours of layover or an extra stop. UA has way better connections, but the thought of flying on UA over 2 hour… 🤮
Idk I’ve actually come to like UA and they have one of the more generous legroom’s in economy
I do like the SEA-TPE-SEA flight schedule.
Our national flag carrier will resume flight to Seattle from Taipei on 14th July
Seems like SEA needs an expansion BAD! I used it several times and the wait time to take off is always long!
It’s a horrendous plan for the size they’re at. They could at least use the center runway to have 2 departure runways
Oh cool surprise- a non-Sunday video! Hanna Montana, lol.
kind of bad that DL cant properly stock the food
It sucks. They do offer a pre-order which is nice, but still sucks when they run out of your selection
Keep it up!
Yea delta made a couple big mistakes, especially for an inaugural flight. United has my expectations too high I guess lol. Thanks man
Fly to Omaha sometime please
That Trent 7000 roar tho.
EVA,China airlines,JX are the options!
6:56 Someone Yells or sneezes
I Like A330-900neo Suite I Have Experience Paris-Los Angeles.Great Video And Info
Awesome! It’s definitely a great seat!
i miss NWA
Please please, if you insist on background sounds, do the subtitles in the video so that one can turn off the sound. That constant ringing is horrible.
Fair enough
Bang Bang Niner Gang!
Seems quick to run out of choices if you're in row 6
That’s what I’m saying! Poor planning by Delta
