This is a bit off topic, but I'm wondering if you have access to brunton hydrogen reactor portable power packs, they have been getting some mixed reviews, but seem like a technology that has a lot of potential in the future. Would be neat to see your take on the techy stuff.
PM101 - On the first torch you review, I notice quite a few bad reviews on Amazon, some good ones too, but the main complaint seemed to be that the ignition switch breaks easily - i.e., within a week or two.
Great video! A torch seems to be the best tool for fire starting and other tasks. My only concern is wind/waterproof capabilities, as well as reliability at altitude. I live at 600 feet above sea level, but bushcraft at just under 9,000 feet. I guess I'll just do some testing. Cheers. --Scott
I'm using Soto torch and it feels really solid and reliable. Thank you for the review.
Just received the same Soto lighter in your video. Seems like an awesome lighter so far. Yes, the push button igniter is a bit difficult at first, but the more I practice, the easier it is to use. Thanks for the review!
The first one would be really good if it were a bit shorter.
Preparedmind if you dont mind voiding your zippo warranty you can add charcoal lighter fluid. I have not refilled this zippo for about a month and it still seems to spark up a light.
If a butane jet doesn’t after refilling it’s because it needs to be air purged. Lookup any how to purge your butane jet lighter for more info. Hold the lighter upside down and use a small object to depress the butane nozzle for a few seconds before you refill them. This allows trapped air to escape. Also warm the lighter in your hands for a minute or so after refueling. The fuel escapes the canister at -35c and is too cold to combust at that point.
Hey, thanks for the tips. Yeah, I've had problems in the past re-filling these jet/torch lighters and I reckon you've just solved the shit. 👍💯
I had the orignal Asoto and loved it. But I manged to break it some yrs later. Went to buy another and found they were pulled from the market. I wrote the manufacturer who I believe was Japanese. He said it was a safety issue in the US and they would redesign the unit and re-release in the US. After a long time, I found a dealer in the UK and ordered it. Fussy to start compared to the original, because of the 'new' safety mechanism. Works great except if left on too long, the plastic around the tip base starts to melt.
i got the 503 . Its not my first choice for a survival kit its kinda big with a not so big reservoir but it's great for lighting candles at home and other home task
From experience, i can tell, if you want a good lighter for some serious situations, look for a butane torch (blue flame jet, like in this video), avoid the ones with the coil, or some bead on a wire inside a burner, those brake fast, avoid moving parts (like this soto lighter) that flexes fuel line or ignition wire. Also if you chose the jet torch, it should have... visible fuel tank, a cap that covers the burner from lint, and i think most important, the ability to ajust the flame without any tools (wheel on a bottom of the lighter), becouse sometimes when the gas tank are less than a half it might not ignite until you make on a higher flame.
Zippo now make their own branded butane torch flame inserts. The insert delivers a dual needle torch flame, very hot, very bright blue and holds a good shot of butane. Use refined butane (any refined butane works well in these jet/torch lighters) just avoid cheap unrefined butane. It's unrefined when it doesn't say "refined" on the tin. The Zippo torch flame insert is of excellent quality, works every time no messing and the duo needle torch flame roars strong, the best I've seen. So _do_ check it out! 💎
Zippo Butane Double Torch. Part no 657827 model no Z8B19
A tip for your zipo. I don't smoke now , Take out the inner shell and rub a candle on the brass casing this stops the fuel evaporating so fast. love the vid
I like that Zippo insert, Thanks
Have you tried filling your zippo with kerosene or paraffin. Its less volatile than the petrol based lighter fluid and lasts much longer. A trick I use with peanut lighters and works well.
I've had a small butane torch for years that I use in the kitchen. I'm gonna have to take it out on the field on my net hike.
That SOTO lighter seems like the best option in terms of saftey, so many times i've burned by knuckles or or other parts of my hand trying to light a fire, you probably wont get that with the SOTO lighter due to the extending lighter head (not sure if thats the term)
The vector Thunderbird insert works fairly well for about a year I have had several that's about as long as they will last. The no proof warenty will cost you $13 to send it in ....you can just buy a new one for under $15 on Amazon
Nice vid as always! Thanks for showing some good butane torches. I've been looking for a decent one and now I have some options. Looking forward to big bag o' blades part three. Have a good day Chris.
The Etou Pencil torch or as I call it, The Lighter Saber
Thanks for the zippo insert update. Always liked the look of a Zippo, now they will be more practical. =)
if it runs out of fuel you got to press the refill on the lighter again to make sure all of the fuel it is out before refueling it and it should work again
Really like the zippo insert.
I was not going to post but as i read all the comments i see mac vs pc there are both good you get what you pay for with either of them it all comes down too preference , when i build a pc i dont buy the lowest cost part i can find ( BECAUSE YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR ) you can always get a bad part with pc or mac it happens and always remember you pay more for them to build it then you would to do it you self sry Chris for adding to this instead of the topic at hand
Butane Torch Options of which i have 2 styles of blazer Butane Torch
I have a Fahrenheit and i like it. It's a good torch for little money.
i have the 503 torch for other purpose, mine leaks, i filled it and it was almost empty 3 weeks after when i needed it. The Dupont Xtend is rock solid and never needs a second clic to fire (expensive tho)
Can you add a video on how to refill the pencil torch and what to use for a refill
Yea, I like that Zippo insert too.
The thunderbird looks like a good option for my existing lighter.
Just to let you know .... the add said DONT SKIP
I skipped to get to your video 💪🏽❤️
if you like the soto you should try the Xikar Stratos High Altitude Single Flame Lighter it works great and run for a long time up is not affected by altitude like the soto or the zippo are I have had mine for two years and had no problems past 12.000 feet
I have a compact Xikar dual flame that I picked up for $40. Great product. Lifetime full warranty.
I bought 503 and it stopt working same day i received it.
But a MAC is never a hardware upgrade! haha, interesting looking Soto. will have to pick one up!
Well, after reading all the comments, including people who are disappointed in all things lighters, you can only say nothing works well out of the box forever, not even people. Maybe a good alt. Would be a replacement valve spark assembly that clicks in. That would possibly save the remaining fuel + half the weight and size . I guess on Mt Everest you would need a dual tank oxygen/butane set up. Dont rem much hearing about hi alt. Climbers and flicking their bic.
What is the name of the Zippo insert? Liked all your videos!
I like the going right into the video without the intro stuff.
Word! That intro crap is for city people, this is the real world out here.
Hey Chris Roughly how long can the 503 torch last? Thanks!
Its like asking what is the runtime on a multi mode flashlight. Depends.
PREPAREDMIND101
Ok Fair Enought. But your average roughly. Can it be relied on for more than a week under emergency situations?
I'm guessing no. Doesn't have add much capacity but also has the most powerful burn. I would use it sparingly. If I CAN start with a ferro rod first, I would. But it's worth buying as a tool alone.
PREPAREDMIND101
I just ordered it along with 6 cans of 7x refined butane fuel
Chris Thorn Chris, what are your thoughts about it now that you've had it for about a month?
old bicycle inner tube cut o fit a zippo makes it water resistant and makes the fluid last longer
Inner tubes are natural rubber.
Buna-N (nitrile rubber) can withstand parafines and olefins (most hydrocarbon oils and fuels) much better..
I need to get me one.
That zippo insert is sick
* Hears major upgrade * * Laughs inside after hearing Macbook pro *
I'm not even going to go there with the silly "PC is just as good if you throw enough money at it" debate.
+TheCHOCOLATEmeter this is how you know he's dumb. totally bassawkwards
+TheCHOCOLATEmeter Lol he honestly used the words "upgrade" and "mac" in the same sentence, without saying upgrade from mac.
1st one best Torch lighter
Zippos will leak in very hot weather....I know this because i had to deal with that out in the field. nothing like your lighter leaking and causing a burn spot on your leg....i went to self contained lighters after that.
And now I really San that thing for my zippo!
Those are sweet torches. Thanks for finding the goods ones. Theres alot of junk out there.
Nice video man! Keep up the good work. I subbed!🤙
I can use this with my FLUX CAPACITOR
my 503 torch refilled once and it broke lol... went with an eagle jet torch
Upgrade or downgrade ?
upgrade for video making. some youtubers have super good pcs but still use macbook for editing. it's really good, even for 4k
Not at all on topic but Chris what type of braid or weave was used to make your Paracord bracelet... I make my own and yours looks pretty cool
+imsuckingwind if there being shipped they will mist likely be empty due to explosives control
Solid video, brother. Learned a thing or two.
great informative review codeo thanks
Are all of these easy to refill?
whats the brand name of the first one ? or a link to it please
Major hardware upgrade? Cool. What are you getting? A Mac? I thought you said you were upgrading...
whats the name of the 2nd ? or a link to it please
i need the link for the first one
How bright are thay in the dark
Sweet I'm a zippo fan but mostly to collect for reasons you stated but that is an awesome insert I'm definitely getting one so I can rock my sweet zippos again thanks Chris oh and since you mentioned it WHERE IS pt 3 imagine me pulling my hair as you read that lol
I'm going to have to break it down even further and reprocess it. So until I get the new computer BBOB might be two knives per video (for the longer demos)
I would watch the BBOB which is my fav knife porn on the web if they were 3hrs long !!! LOL
Why do butane lighters fail in cold weather?
+Tyrone Walker butane has a boiling point aka vapor producing temp around 31 degrees F at sea level. the colder the air and the higher the altitude the less likely your butane will produce the vapor needed for ignition. backpacking stove fuel gets around this by adding n-butane or iso-butane to propane backpacking canisters. (pure propane has a much lower boiling point thus needing a stronger container...but I digress).
I hope this helps.
Wow! This is why I'm getting my old Zippo ready for another cold one. El Nino at that!
Tyrone
+highonimmi the problem being thought that they also suck
it evaporates rather quickly
on the other hand..you can fill it with almost anything and it'll light granted it'll gum your lighter up...an destroy the wick quickly but it's nice to have given the light weight of replacement flints/wicks
(meaning having a zippo on hand..even if you usually just reach for the butane is handy)
you've not lived until you've filled one with diesel and given it to a friend to light their cigarette with
josh spradling as a former 77f (pol) I would love to see that. I have had to use mogas before....not again though. I just learned to keep my butane lighter in my cleavage (yes ima chick) during cold weather. fired up every time. btw...the dudes I knew would put their butane lighters in the "junk trunk." had to wear tighty whities for that though:)
Are any of these a good ideas for heating silver or do you need hotter / bigger flames
MrsFr3SH4ya Why not simply light a fire then simply heat whatever you want with the fire?
Wow I live in Columbus Ohio too. Cool
I have read that the zippo ones leak butane is this your experience?
James Thacker the gasoline ones leak gas but i dont think the jet ones wont
this dude sounds like he’s in a Star Wars scene
The first one looks like a lightsabre
I ordered a SOTO lighter on this review. Don't use this for a cigarette when you flip up a welding hood on your head...trust me. This was a $400.00 dollar mistake
Someone shooting a raygun mk2?
Am i the only one who instantly thought the first one looked like a lightsaber?
nice torch, when technologie can simplify your life and your survival, why not.
Just use a bic lighter it will last you more than all of these and it's way cheaper
Are you talking the cheap bic lighters or what ones, I have tried multiple ones and they never end up working right, fail all the time. Let me know what one you use so I know what is working.
its sort of right, but bic lighters dont work as good when theres a lot of wind.
They also destroy the planet with all the plastic garbage from their disposable products. Thanks but I care about our Earth....!
You see, check out the bottom of your BIC disposable lighter, it doesn’t have a refill compartment, cause that’s how they profit, mass producing these cheap plastic lighters then making sure you toss it away and buy a new one once it runs out of fluid, since it’s so cheap, they make sure you can’t refill because that’s how they profit, and who suffers and is harmed by that process? You guessed it right, the Earth and innocent animals who die everyday day from garbage being thrown in nature!
You know that there’s so much industrial human made garbage in the ocean it together compares to a country ?? Everyday sea turtles, seals, dolphins.. die from garbage that dumped into the ocean by immoral and greedy companies and governments, that when they don’t outright dispose of toxic and radioactive waste on water bodies like lakes, rivers and the sea
And did you know that plastic takes around 5 hundred years to way over a century to decompose in nature? Companies don’t even make the effort to make their products biodegradable to lessen the impact on the planet and The ecosystems.
So no, thanks but I will never buy anything disposable in my life specially made of plastic!
1:05 video starts
If ur zippo dries, u didn't fill it
Mac's are overpriced IMO. You can get a Pc with better specs for the same price or cheaper.
With Windows 8? No thank you. I'm just going to make the leap all longtime video people eventually make... sooner rather than later.
PREPAREDMIND101
You know you can put many Operating systems for your Macbook including Windows 8.1?
Allow me to share my experience. I thought the same thing that CanadianKnifeExpert mentioned, so I got set up with a powerful PC. I had NOTHING but trouble. I was on the phone with tech support for the editing software, and the computer itself... and nothing worked. Finally, one PC tech support guy got fed up and said: "My boss just left for lunch, so no one can hear me... GET A MAC!!!" I respected his opinion and did what he said. It was unbelievable how almost all of the problems vanished. PC computers are just not for video editing. I hope my horrible experience will save someone else from the suffering what I endured.
torch for survival makes no sense, its depletes the gas suplies 10 times faster then regular flame and conserving every resource is crucial.
Hard to take any review seriously when it starts out with upgrade to Mac book pro...
Not correctly anyways
You got a crumb on your hand.
every butane torch I've ever had was a piece of junk
Dan Bywater could say the same but not the blazer gt 8000. No safety and one of the largest fuels
i got a 3 dollar butane torch at the dollar store, beats any of these...
useless review didn't even test them for long or on anything.
Maybe not on camera. I STILL have the long grey one and the insert. The one that extends ended up breaking. And seeing that this video is a couple years old, that's saying something.
Another really good small torch is the Weller ML-100 Magna-Lite torch. It is key chain size, reaches 1600 F and holds a fair amount of butane - probably as much as that zippo. Weller is a very respected brand for soldering irons and such.
Has a nozzle cover that automatically pops open when you hit the igniter.
You can find them in various places and on-line for around $12
