  • See our blacksmith forge weld parts of this fitting for Gjøa. By heating the metal to around 1300°C, the metal is forged together creating a very strong connection. Borax is used to prevent oxidation. The design of the fitting is seen on old photographs of Gjøa, and the technique used is based on documentation of a range of fittings from similar ships of the same time period.

    To watch this is like touching my past. My Grandfather built ships in Brooklyn. His Grandfather built boats in Sweden.

    no gloves? for a noob like me that seems super dangerous.

      With no gloves sparks bounce off. With gloves they get trapped and pushed against your skin.
      Unless you're wearing gloves that go to your elbows, no gloves is safer.
