I came across this concept "control for xxx" when revisiting multiple regression. There is actually another interpretation in the multiple regression domain.
Suppose that we have a multiple regression Y = aX1 + bX2 + c
We call coefficient a is the effect of X1 on Y, CONTROLLING X2, in the sense that we "remove" the effects from X2 when asserting the effects by X1.
