i was looking for how to create a chain for weeks!, going through some videos that woked but not as I wanted, and the proper way to make it was here all along, thanks so much!
Excellent tutorial! And for the record, those of you who have a version of Max that doesn't include MassFX, this tutorial works perfectly with the Nvidia plug-in PhysX. (can get free on Nvidias website. Just google Nvidia PhysX for 3ds Max and get the version that corresponds with your version of Max). The interface is almost identical. The ONLY thing that's different is the part where you need to tweak the Substeps and solver Itinerations. PhysX doesn't have the the Substeps paramenter, only the Solver Itinerations. It was set at a default of 30 for me, and the chain broke apart just like in the video. Setting it to 40 solved the problem. Also, keep each link as low poly, and clean-meshed as you can. I don't know if it's just with PhysX, but I had created a chain of very high poly links (probably some overlapping polygons in it too because I was sloppy) and when Generating the Convex rigid body, Max crashed. After several tries, I created new links with Wendy's low-poly method solved the issue.
skip to 8:30 if you don´t want do see the modeling process by the way, the basic grid is by standard a collider too, so if you want to run some tests, lift your objects up so there´s a bit of space between them and the grid (you can deactivate that in the MassFX Settings under scene settings/environment/use ground collissions)
Your tutorial was nice and clear and easy to follow but I'm afraid nothing happened when I selected 'play' on the simulation. Am I missing something obvious? Can you think of any reason this may occur?
Seeing as my background is totally Mcad based [ Siemens Solid Edge and Siemens NX ] Vrep modelling is alien to me . These tutorials [ in my case for 3 DS Max ] are Superb, I find them invaluable, and so well narrated. I did wonder if it was possible to export the result of the Chain / Torus simulation unwrapped as an FBX for use in Substance Painter, My first attempts always resulted in the simulation reverting to the straight chain, when unwrapping, but.... after some trial and error I have a method that works perfectly. After the simulation has run, I select everything and convert to Editable Poly then I can unwrap and take into Painter. Not sure if my method is correct ... but it works great. Keep the tutorials coming , love them👌🏼👌🏼
Nice tutorial but my chain links keep breaking apart when running the simulation despite my Substeps and Solver Iter. being set exact;y like yours. I think the problem is that under Mesh Type within Physical Meshes I don't have the option for Concave just Convex, which is what I'm using instead. Why wouldn't Concave be there and how do I get it to show up in the drop down list? Thanks.
5:34 I can't find concave. It doesn't show up in 3DS Max 2012. Can anyone help? There is only Sphere, Box, Capsule, Convex, Composite, Original and Custom.
Can someone tells me what is the lap top configuration or the PC configuration normal for doing 3DS Max? I`ve got lap top AMD A8 APU 6410, with 8GB memory, Radeon Graphics R5 and hard drive of 1TB. Sometimes its working perfectly but this MassFX Rigid Body Modifier works so slow! Suggestions? Thanks Wendy I am her addmierer, your work step by step is so good and it helps me to learn some things about 3DS Max!

Thanks, Wendy. I'm not new to MassFX but I still relearned something here that had been giving me a headache. Great tut.
What a lovely accent and that, really helps to explain the steps. Superb video. so concise. Wonderful.
Thank you

Just restart the pc, had the same problem ;)
Hi Wendy,
Really fantastic. Thank you for this lesson.
New successes, Stephen.
amazing technique and i hope this tricky method and technique is unique on youtube channel.
I admire your tone of voice...thanks
Thank you!

thank you very much,i like your tutorials!
thank you so much. it's really easy to see
so cool! thanks for the vid

Mrs. Wendy Huther, I would like to know how to make tea cup ?
Is there a theory manual or scientific publication on the dynamic model behind that simulation?
Good guide, thanks!
Excellent tutorial! Thank you.
thank you for your share! The best tutorial !
hoa liang Thank you very much for your feedback!

Useful but the polygon count was way too high for the complexity of the model I think.
Thnx...really helpfull tutorial
Thank you !
thank you so much
güzel ders. teşekkürler
I use the big boy measuring system.
Hi,Thanx for this very easy, understanding method & also simple way its awesome, May G|od Bless YOU...! Amen
very good video-video your friends
thank you very good for me
Thank you
Tnq u mam u r videos more helpful could you make more videos mam

i did everything right but the animation didn't work for me when i press play
thanks!
Very good
