Интересный факт: песня дошла до нас в искаженном варианте. В первоначальной версии были не казаки а хазары. "Їхали хазари із торгу-розбою, підманули Галю - забрали з собою." Был ещё вариант "татары". Казак никогда бы не привязал девушку к дереву и не поджег - это противоречит казачьему культу Берегини (женщины - хранительницы очага). А вот хазары или татары - запросто (языческое жертвоприношение). В конце был ещё куплет "Козаки почули, до лiсу майнули, хазар (татар) порубали, Галю врятували".
Вот оно как! А я то тоже сначала не понял, почему в этой песне козаки антагонистами предстают. Обычно они же в песнях являлись хорошими парнями, а тут взяли и девушку просто так спалили.

It’s a song about how Cossacks riding through the village made a girl coming with them (on her own will). And after that she was forced to marry the Cossack, whom she didn’t love. And on the wedding they were burning the pine tree. Not the girl. Burning the pine tree is an old Ukrainian tradition on the wedding. There is a song “Горіла сосна, палала» Horila sosna, palala about that tradition. So no one kills the girl, it’s just the wedding. And removing a ponytails for married women is also a tradition
